That wasn't the correct info I needed to send..

Apparently now when I try to send something to this thing, I get that it's
 corrupted can't be read, sigh..

The properties show that it is, raw with 0 files/0space used.

When I do the applications key on properties for that drive, it reads that
it is NTFS and that 238/ used, and if I tab to format it, I hear that I
 will
loose all data on it if I do this, but I cannot retrieve or see any data
listed on this drive and also it isn't stating that it's a drive as it
before it recognized it as, Free Agent Drive J.
But now it says it's, Local Disk J.

What happen can it be fixed?

 Thanks,

 Patricia

[Blind-Computing] how much memory will windows xp actually recognize?

2008-09-04 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hello, all. I'll try to keep this as short and simple as possible. I've got
4 GB of ram in my system. About a week and a half ago, my video card ended
up dying, and I bought a replacement. My old card had 256 mb of ram on it,
and the new card supposedly has 512 mb of ram on it. I had a company come
and install the new video card last Wednesday. Prior to the change in video
card, I would have sworn that my computer was recognizing 3.0 gb of ram. I
had read on more than one occasion that win XP, especially the 32 bit
version simply won't recognize the full 4 GB of ram I chose to install when
I built my system, and was OK with that. After the change in video card,
however, my system is only recognizing 2.5 GB of ram. The technician
actually came back out to investigate, as I was convinced that a ram chip
may have come lose during the installation of the video card. As it turns
out, all of my memory is physicly fine; is recognized by the motherboard
and by software like cpuz with no problem. The tech informed me that the
decrease actually happened when I installed sp3, but I can't help thinking
that this is inaccurate, since, like I said above, I am pretty sure that I
can remember having 3.0 gb of ram before the video card change.
I realize that on the whole, the ram decrease probably isn't a big deal,
but it does seem that JFW loads a bit slower when I start my system.
I guess I just want some other opinions for my own piece of mind, and to
know whether or not I should look into this further or just accept that
this is the way things are now. Thank you all very much for your time, and
I hope this makes sense to some of you.

Hello, can anyone point me in the direction of a screen reader software
packadge that will allow me to stream audio from my computer out onto
the internet. I have a few broadcasts for my students that I would like
to stream. I know there is Nicecast for the Mac but I was hoping for
something that would run under Windows and is JFW friendly.

If in fact you're sharing memory then no way will you pick up the entire
amount. Now having said that the fact is your memory card shouldn't be
sucking up probably no more than 256. Normally they take 128 such as what is

 turns
out, all of my memory is physicly fine; is recognized by the motherboard
and by software like cpuz with no problem. The tech informed me that the
decrease actually happened when I installed sp3, but I can't help
 thinking
that this is inaccurate, since, like I said above, I am pretty sure that
 I
can remember having 3.0 gb of ram before the video card change.
I realize that on the whole, the ram decrease probably isn't a big deal,
but it does seem that JFW loads a bit slower when I start my system.
I guess I just want some other opinions for my own piece of mind, and to
know whether or not I should look into this further or just accept that
this is the way things are now. Thank you all very much for your time,
 and
I hope this makes sense to some of you.

Re: [Blind-Computing] how much memory will windows xp actuallyrecognize?

2008-09-04 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Missy,

How did you confirm that RAM size when you checked it?

Was it during boot up and you saw the RAM counter count out the memory on
your system, or did you go through a program on your computer?

If you go to the My Computer icon on your desktop, then press alt+enter to
get to the properties, the system properties will pop up.

You'll have to use your virtual cursor or mouse simulation keys, and since I
don't know which screen reader you're using, or magnifier, I can't advise
you on what keystroke will give you these functions.

Suffice it to say, if you arrow down the information, it will give you your
processor speed and memory amount in that dialog box.

Let us know what it says there, and we'll see if there really is anything
wrong with your memory.

Secondly, some video cards use, not only onboard memory on the video card
for it's use, if it finds it needs more, it will share the memory with the
RAM on your computer, so it could be that you're video card is
misappropriating some of that memory for itself.

Another possibility is the fact that he may have shorted out one of the
sockets, or fried one of your memory chips, in which case, the only way to
diagnose this is to swap it out for another memory chip and see if it gets
recognized.

Either way, we'll have to get more information.

Re: [Blind-Computing] how much memory will windows xpactuallyrecognize?

2008-09-04 Thread Missy Hoppe
Hi! Bios and software such as cpuz recognize my full 4 GB of memory, so I'm
99% definite it isn't a hardware issue. The 2.5 GB is reported when I do
properties under my computer; the whole problem is that I'm pretty definite
it reported 3 GB before the video card change. I thought I made that clear
in my original message, but maybe I didn't. Although the tech attributes
this change to Service Pack 3, I'm more inclined to believe that the video
card is responsible for the change. Also, I suppose it could be that
although windows only tells me there's 2.5 gb, maybe it actually is making
use of more behind the scenes.
Anyway, thank you very much for your response, it is extremely appreciated.

I'm using xp media center, so does that mean it should be recognizing my
full 4 GB? Any theories on why this isn't the case, and how I might go
about fixing it? I'm just curious, because if a tech couldn't figure it
out, I'm assuming it must be pretty complicated. Mostly, I'm baffled as
 to
why it changed in the first place.
Thanks for your reply, and I hope that you're having a great day!

Hello, all. I'll try to keep this as short and simple as possible. I've
 got
4 GB of ram in my system. About a week and a half ago, my video card
 ended
up dying, and I bought a replacement. My old card had 256 mb of ram on
 it,
and the new card supposedly has 512 mb of ram on it. I had a company
 come
and install the new video card last Wednesday. Prior to the change in
 video
card, I would have sworn that my computer was recognizing 3.0 gb of ram.
 I
had read on more than one occasion that win XP, especially the 32 bit
version simply won't recognize the full 4 GB of ram I chose to install
 when
I built my system, and was OK with that. After the change in video card,
however, my system is only recognizing 2.5 GB of ram. The technician
actually came back out to investigate, as I was convinced that a ram
 chip
may have come lose during the installation of the video card. As it
 turns
out, all of my memory is physicly fine; is recognized by the motherboard
and by software like cpuz with no problem. The tech informed me that the
decrease actually happened when I installed sp3, but I can't help
 thinking
that this is inaccurate, since, like I said above, I am pretty sure that
 I

know whether or not I should look into this further or just accept that
this is the way things are now. Thank you all very much for your time,
 and
I hope this makes sense to some of you.

Hi all, I've just spoken to my girlfriend over the phone, and her computer
shop has diagnosed a failing hard drive on her Toshiba laptop running
Windows XP Home Edition SP3. I thank you for the good discussion on Skype
and security, however this wasn't the cause of the many problems she's been
having with it. She'll be starting her research for a new laptop either
tonight or over the weekend, and buy one when she comes back off her

Re: [Blind-Computing] ADD/Remove Question

2008-09-04 Thread Patricia Dunbar
Rick,

I did look on the web site before posting this question and didn't really
find anything useful..

But I have removed it and in that process, I was given option to see what
this did in terms of what is already on my system, and after looking at the
list of items which I don't use, but guess they are there in case I did, I
removed it.

Thanks for the info..

Also regarding the external drive, will take that back tomorrow.

 Hi Patricia,
 This is a Microsoft update.
More information can be found at:
 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888111/en-us
Basically, it is a audio driver update, and if you remove it, then your
system will revert to the previous driver.
If you were not experiencing any audio problems before
installing it, then uninstall it, and we'll go from there.

 Subject: [Blind-Computing] ADD/Remove Question

I have a question on an item in my control panel under add/remove that I
need to know what it is for since I tried to click on more info and was
 unable to obtain any..

 It says it's..

 High Definition Audio KB888111

I have no idea what this is for and when I tried to find out it did give
 me
under the remove option that it was some software and if I removed it my
system would go back to an earlier configeration. I am asking about this
because lately within shortly after installing the windows service pack 3
 I
noticed a big change in the speakers or the sound quality coming from
 them.
This really shows up the worst when AVG is doing it's thing for some
 reason,
so I just wanted to ask if anyone knows what this for or how I can learn
 what it is?

 Thanks,

 Patricia

Prior to the change in
 video
card, I would have sworn that my computer was recognizing 3.0 gb of
 ram.
 I
had read on more than one occasion that win XP, especially the 32 bit
version simply won't recognize the full 4 GB of ram I chose to install
 when
I built my system, and was OK with that. After the change in video
 card,
however, my system is only recognizing 2.5 GB of ram. The technician
actually came back out to investigate, as I was convinced that a ram
 chip
may have come lose during the installation of the video card. As it
 turns
out, all of my memory is physicly fine; is recognized by the
 motherboard
and by software like cpuz with no problem. The tech informed me that
 the
decrease actually happened when I installed sp3, but I can't help
 thinking
that this is inaccurate, since, like I said above, I am pretty sure
 that
 I
can remember having 3.0 gb of ram before the video card change.
I realize that on the whole, the ram decrease probably isn't a big
 deal,
but it does seem that JFW loads a bit slower when I start my system.
I guess I just want some other opinions for my own piece of mind, and
 to
know whether or not I should look into this further or just accept that
this is the way things are now. Thank you all very much for your time,
 and
I hope this makes sense to some of you.
 Missy

Hi all, I have been having this problem for awhile now while trying to
move files from certain folders. The only ones I've come across that
do this are the my documents folder and all folders within it. What
happens is when I do the commands either alt-e then f to copy or alt-e
v to move, the files will move to the new location, but Windows
Explorer then gives an error saying it needs to close. After this a
message from Dr. Watson Postmortem Debugger comes up. Once this
message appears there seems to be no way to get rid of it because Jaws
freezes, and it seems the whole computer does too because I can't get
into the start menu or desktop or anything. I did a little research on
the internet and found a few blogs saying that this was a virus and
there were steps to remove it. However, there were new entries that
said this virus was no longer a problem since all anti-virus programs
should pick it up now. So I'm wondering what else it could be, because
the only way I've been able to fix the problem is to reboot the
computer when it happens, and if I want to copy any files from any
folder in my documents, I do the standard cut and paste commands,
which don't produce this problem. But if it really is a virus, I would
really like to know so I can get rid of it. But wouldn't you think if
that was the case Avast would've picked it up by now? Thanks for any
 and all suggestions.

Re: [Blind-Computing] problem moving files

2008-09-04 Thread Jeffrey Shockley, Windows Desktop Edition
Hmmm. Try running a Disk Check on the drive and check both boxes. It
will take a while and your system wil have to be restarted tfor it to
complete. JAWS won't be available during the check since windows isn't
loaded, and once it is finished, your system will restart again and
Windows should load normally.

Re: [Blind-Computing] ADD/Remove Question

2008-09-04 Thread Rick Justice
Hi Patricia,
On both items, good deal.
Just a thought, if you can swing it,
get an external drive with it's own power supply,
I think you will be pleased with the performance.

 Rick,

I did look on the web site before posting this question and didn't really
 find anything useful..

But I have removed it and in that process, I was given option to see what
this did in terms of what is already on my system, and after looking at
 the
list of items which I don't use, but guess they are there in case I did, I
 removed it.

 Thanks for the info..

Also regarding the external drive, will take that back tomorrow.

 Patricia

I am asking about this
because lately within shortly after installing the windows service pack
 3
 I
noticed a big change in the speakers or the sound quality coming from
 them.
This really shows up the worst when AVG is doing it's thing for some
 reason,
so I just wanted to ask if anyone knows what this for or how I can learn
 what it is?

 Thanks,

 Patricia
