I also use Windows Defender. But because WD is only a spyware blocker, you
still need a more comprehensive anti-spyware program like Super Anti Spyware

or MalwareBytes that can actually remove malware that gets past WD.

 Hi Marvin,

I am using Spyware Blaster version 4.2. I can usually navigate it with
the Jaws cursor. As long as the Jaws cursor works, I will continue to use

Spyware Blaster. Someone who is good with scripting needs to rewrite the
scripts to work with the latest version.

[Blind-Computing] Unusual problem with laptop

2009-04-26 Thread Chris Hallsworth

Hello all,
Has anyone heard of the below.
Hannah put her Vista laptop to sleep. When she woke it up the entire machine
froze and she can't even power it off, despite holding it for more than five
seconds.
Never heard this before and it's quite worrying. I've just told her to let
it completely discharge.

Thanks in advance for any help regarding this.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Unusual problem with laptop

2009-04-26 Thread David Griffith
I had an old work Armada XP laptop once which used to freeze in a similar
fashion. The solution was to unplug the power supply, release the battery
for 5 seconds , reinsert the battery , replug in and reboot. It is a hassle
but probably quicker than allowing the battery to discharge.

Sometimes the only way out of a crash appears to unfortunately remove all
power sources.
Hope all is ok when it eventually reboots.

David Griffith

Re: [Blind-Computing] Java Access Bridge

2009-04-26 Thread Ryan MacIsaac
Hi,

I think the error you are getting is because the Java Access Bridge cannot
find the Java run time environment. This means you do not have a version of
Java installed on your computer. This means you will have to go to the Java
web site and install the latest Java version. You can get the Java run time
environment at the following address:

http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

Once you have installed the Java run time environment, uninstall and
reinstall the Java Access Bridge. This will hopefully get things working for
you.

As a side note, I have not found Open Office to be very accessible. It is
difficult to use for someone who must use a screen reader.

Good luck,
Ryan

Dear List

Can anybody help with this query.

I am considering a Project where I try and make available training in free
screen reading / office software for a local low vision forum. I need to
test this out for feasibility. I am going to use NVDA and Open Office.

The stumbling block I have is that I need to install the Java Access Bridge
. I have download the zip file from Sum systems and run the installer.exe
file which is found in the Installer directory of the extracted folder The
notes accompanying the files are a model of how not to set up user friendly
guidance..

The error message I receive when I run this installer.exe is something like
error - no VM found. Does anybody know what is going on here? Also in the
extracted folder are a couple of dll files. Can I simply copy them somewhere
for this to all work? Is there a simpler access bridge installer which I can
download and use? I have virtualised the access bridge folder below if that
is any help for anybody..

Re: [Blind-Computing] Unusual problem with laptop

2009-04-26 Thread Annette Carr
My Del laptop has started doing something similar to this. Sometimes after
I have walked away from my laptop it will go to sleep, hibernate, stand-by
or something. Most times when I return to my laptop all I need to do is hit
the down arrow and press enter and I'm back in. There are other times when
nothing will get it to come back on except for holding down the power button
for at least 30 seconds or more. This has happened when working off both AC
and battery.

[Blind-Computing] Java problem

2009-04-26 Thread Milos Przic
   hell all,
I downloaded a program for packaging the z-code files to .jar, but
nevermind, to open the .jar file, I had to use the j2se or sdk. Not knowing
what was that, I downloaded something that I found using google, and when I
wanted to install the file, the file was j2sdk-1_4_13-nb-5_0win-ml.exe, it said
that htat is a virtual machine, and the instalation was graphical. Is there an
accessible way to open the jar file and do with it what I need to do?
Best regards, and thank you in advance!

Hello all,
Has anyone heard of the below.
Hannah put her Vista laptop to sleep. When she woke it up the entire
machine
froze and she can't even power it off, despite holding it for more than
five

seconds.
Never heard this before and it's quite worrying. I've just told her to let
it completely discharge.
Thanks in advance for any help regarding this.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Unusual problem with laptop

2009-04-26 Thread Gerald Levy

Just turn it off when it's not being used for a few hours. So what if it
takes a little longer to start up? At least it will come up and running. I
have had occasional problems bringing my hefty Dell workstation out of
standby mode, so I prefer to completely shut it down at night or whenever I
won't be using it for a few hours. And don't even get me started about
hibernate mode.

Gina,
Are you sure about that?
It should be on the bottom row, in the center console, the second key from
the right. First the Control key then the Applications key.

I have never heard of a laptop which didn't have that key.

I also use Windows Defender. But because WD is only a spyware blocker,
you
still need a more comprehensive anti-spyware program like Super Anti

or MalwareBytes that can actually remove malware that gets past WD.

Hannah put her Vista laptop to sleep. When she woke it up the entire

froze and she can't even power it off, despite holding it for more than

Never heard this before and it's quite worrying. I've just told her to

Thanks in advance for any help regarding this.

The problem is not that laptops take a long time to boot up. The real
problem is that it takes a long time for JAWS to start speaking after you
hit the power button. And it doesn't seem to matter what kind of computer

Re: [Blind-Computing] Java Access Bridge

2009-04-26 Thread David Griffith
I do have Java installed. It is there in my system tray. However I
redownloaded the installation and ran an update. At the end I received a
message that Java had been successfully updated.

I again ran the install.exe in the Java Access Bridge and again got the
message.

No Java VMs found
No Java virtual machines found which will support the Java Access
Bridge. Search more?

Accepting the option to search more creates a bizarre error message saying
no disc . This error message in turn is impossible to exit from unless
you restart your computer. I copied the Java Access Bridge folder onto the
c drive but received identical results.

User friendly this is not!
Has anybody else got any idea?

Regards

David Griffith

[Blind-Computing] potentially serious windows problem, can someone explain this message?

2009-04-26 Thread Desiree Oudinot
Hi, Upon restarting my computer, I received the following error:
Rundll32.exe - Bad Image
The application or DLL H:\WINDOWS\system32\jinuyeju.dll is not a valid
Windows image. Please check this against
your installation diskette.
OK
Before I restarted the computer, the system was performing very
slowly. I was on Aim and it would not accept a file transfer, saying
there was no disk space, which I knew was incorrect. When I restarted
the computer, it first wanted to end a program that I didn't recognize
the name of. Now the system is running normally, but Aim still won't
accept file transfers, and that message has me a little worried. Any
ideas? I am doing a virus scan right now using Avast, and if that
helps I'll let you all know.

Hi,
Definitely malware, I haven't seen an easy fix for jinuyeju.dll removal
short of going into safe mode and doing lots of tricky things.
Try a full virus scan and run a few antispyware programs and see what they
can do.
Good luck with this one, sounds tricky!

Re: [Blind-Computing] potentially serious windows problem, can someone explain this message?

2009-04-26 Thread Tony Hernandez
I would say that is definitely classic virus-type behavior. If you find a
virus with avast, you should scan your computer more than once, and keep
doing it until you get zero threats found or something to that effect. You
might have a Trojan horse, and those can take a long time to clean out.
Also, you might consider a windows repair if possible. I don't know how to
do that, but there is a ton of info about it on google.

hi Steve

I might be wrong but don't think it can, I for one wouldn't be sure it was

scan with anything you can find until it says it's clear.

I'd also go looking for a removal tool and hope it isn't one that says go in
to the registry. don't know about you, but I wont mess about in there.
*smiles*

what anti virus are you using?

might I also suggest malwarbytes, although not an anti virus program it can
pick up Trojans.

Apologies if you already have this program.

Hi,
Definitely malware, I haven't seen an easy fix for jinuyeju.dll removal
short of going into safe mode and doing lots of tricky things.
Try a full virus scan and run a few antispyware programs and see what
they

can do.
Good luck with this one, sounds tricky!

Hi, Upon restarting my computer, I received the following error:
Rundll32.exe - Bad Image
The application or DLL H:\WINDOWS\system32\jinuyeju.dll is not a valid
Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.
OK
Before I restarted the computer, the system was performing very slowly.
I
was on Aim and it would not accept a file transfer, saying there was no
disk
space, which I knew was incorrect. When I restarted the computer, it
first
wanted to end a program that I didn't recognize the name of. Now the
system

is running normally, but Aim still won't accept file transfers, and that

Re: [Blind-Computing] Java Access Bridge

2009-04-26 Thread Donald Marang
What version of the Java Access Bridge do you have? Looking at the zip
contents it looks like it could be version 1.2. The latest version I have
seen is 2.0 and has been around for a while. Of course, I am just guessing.
Sun has always confused me with their version numbering. Their should be a
link on the previously provided link for the Java runtime to download the
latest Java Access Bridge as well.

I copied the Java Access Bridge folder onto

c drive but received identical results.

User friendly this is not!
Has anybody else got any idea?

Hi,

I think the error you are getting is because the Java Access Bridge cannot
find the Java run time environment. This means you do not have a version
of
Java installed on your computer. This means you will have to go to the
Java
web site and install the latest Java version. You can get the Java run
time

environment at the following address:

http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

Once you have installed the Java run time environment, uninstall and
reinstall the Java Access Bridge. This will hopefully get things working
for

you.

As a side note, I have not found Open Office to be very accessible. It is
difficult to use for someone who must use a screen reader.

Good luck,
Ryan

Dear List

Can anybody help with this query.

I am considering a Project where I try and make available training in free

test this out for feasibility. I am going to use NVDA and Open Office.

The stumbling block I have is that I need to install the Java Access

. I have download the zip file from Sum systems and run the installer.exe
file which is found in the Installer directory of the extracted folder The
notes accompanying the files are a model of how not to set up user

The error message I receive when I run this installer.exe is something
like
error - no VM found. Does anybody know what is going on here? Also in
the
extracted folder are a couple of dll files. Can I simply copy them
somewhere
for this to all work? Is there a simpler access bridge installer which I
can
download and use? I have virtualised the access bridge folder below if
that

is any help for anybody..

very weird. so no ideas if it has found something or it's just saying that.

Follow these steps to remove unwanted icons from the System Tray:

1. Press Windows key, then Escape.
2. Tab to the Task Bar and press Alt-Enter to bring up the Task Bar
Properties dialog.
3. On the Task Bar page, tab to the Notification area customize dialog and
hit Enter.

hide. Press the right arrow to the combo box and select always hide.

5. Repeat step 4 for each icon you want to hide.

Hiding unwanted icons is really more of an issue for sighted users who may
find it distracting to have a lot of icons cluttering their System Tray.
But it is perfectly okay to leave them there.

Re: [Blind-Computing] inporting messages

2009-04-26 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi Michael,

Are these OE messages saved as .eml files, .doc files or as some
other type of file extension?
If it is saved as a .eml file try this;
1. Open the file and press the control + F keys to forward it and simply
forward it to yourself by addressing it to yourself and pressing alt + S to
send while in the edit field.
If it has a .doc or some other file extension try this;
1. Open My Documents and go to the document you would like to put into OE.
2. Open the document and press control + A to select the whole message.
3. Now, press control +C to copy it to the clipboard and close the document.
4. Go to OE and open a new message.
5. Address this new message to yourself with your Email address and put
something in the subject field to name it.
6. In the edit field, press control + V to paste the message you had copied
from My Documents and press Alt + S to send it.
7. When you receive this Email in your In box highlight it and press the
control, shift, +V keys simultaneously. This is the shortcut keystroke to
move a message.
8. Now arrow up and down until you find the folder you want to put the
message in and when you get to the folder you want press enter and the
message will be in your desired folder.

There are probably other and/or easier ways to do this but, this is what
works for me. Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

Don't confuse the desktop with the system tray. It's my understanding that
the desktop itself, if toocrowded, can actually slow your machine down a
little. I imagine the number of icons would have to be quite substantial
to be noticeable, but it's something worth thinking about. The system tray
and the desktop are not two mutually exclusive concepts.

Generally speaking, if a program can be minimized to the system tray, that
ability is built into the program, and how exactly you accomplish it
varies from program to program. There are programs designed to minimize
any program you want to the system tray.

Re: [Blind-Computing] System Trey

2009-04-26 Thread Mike Barbara
Hi Marilyn,

What I have done is copy Icons/program shortcuts that I don't use very often
into the start menu and delete the Icons from the desktop. I used to have
something like 50 or more icons on the desktop and now I only have 14.
Granted, I have a lot of programs in the start menu but, that is very easy
to navigate especially when they are programs I don't use frequently. If
you don't know how to place things into the start menu the steps are below.

1. Select and copy the item to the clipboard.

2. Go to the desktop and open My Computer.

3. open Local disc C.
4. Open Documents Settings.
5. Arrow to the folder with your name, the name folder and press enter.
6. Press the letter S until you get to the start menu or arrow down until
you get to the start menu.

7. Press enter on the start menu and paste your item in there.
8. Sometimes you have to create a shortcut through the context applications
key. If you paste a shortcut you need to delete shortcut to from the
item.

Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

[Blind-Computing] can't close internet explorer down

2009-04-26 Thread Rosemarie Chavarria
Hi, everyone. Normally if you alt tab when you're on the desktop, you hear
jaws but I'm getting internet explorer instead. I try to close it down with
alt f-4 but for some strange reason it makes a kind of thumping sound and won't
let me shut it down. I don't know why this is happening. Does anyone have an
idea as to what could be happening?

Any help would be very much appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Hi, John. I ended up rebooting the computer. Then I unloaded and reloaded
Jaws and that seemed to fix the problem.

Thanks.

hi chris,
thanks for letting me know.
This is such ignorance on microsofts part. I meman whyx on earth force
people to guinea pig their new stuff?
I cannot afford to keep buying new jaws versions all the time . their
older
messengers worked fine, I had been using the one prior to this 9 version
and

now I am without a messenger, just great.
they just don't care, do they?

Chrissie, I'm afraid to inform you that your JAWS version is far from
supported when it comes to Windows Live Messenger 2009. You need at least
the current build of JAWS 10, 10.0.1142, to use it. I wonder if David or
the
other moderators could upload the version of Miranda that is configured
for
screen readers?

hi list,
is is terrible. I was just forced to install this new messenger 9 thing.
I

wanted to add messenger to my notebook and had kept an older (8.5)
installer
handy. I installed and when I wanted to sign on it refused it unless I
installed the newest one.
So now I am stuck with this new one and not a clue on what to do with it.
this is not the least bit blind and screenreader friendly.
I am using xp and jaws 7.10 and now cannot even get online to talk to my
contacts because this thing is so complicated there seem to be pop up
things
and inside the messenger a thousand options that i cannot even find my
online contacts.
has anyone tried this messenger and are there any options in there to
make

it more blind friendly and( or the best settings for it to work with a
screenreader
my sighted friend says it is full of new graphical playthings.
thanks microsoft :(
regards
chrissy

 Gina,
 Are you sure about that?
It should be on the bottom row, in the center console, the second key from

the right. First the Control key then the Applications key.
I have never heard of a laptop which didn't have that key.

I also use Windows Defender. But because WD is only a spyware blocker,
 you
still need a more comprehensive anti-spyware program like Super Anti

or MalwareBytes that can actually remove malware that gets past WD.

 Hi Marvin,

I am using Spyware Blaster version 4.2. I can usually navigate it with
the Jaws cursor. As long as the Jaws cursor works, I will continue to
 use

Spyware Blaster. Someone who is good with scripting needs to rewrite
 the
scripts to work with the latest version.
