Hey; I use it and like it a lot; I find when I hit the update/all
button, everything updates; sometimes you have to waiter a couple of
minutes, though.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Text to speech software?

2011-01-04 Thread Ann Marie Medlar

Thanks for this link but I'll review it tomorrow.
I download all files to desk top in folder named downloads
I downloaded the following NVDA files:
Anvda_2010.2_portable.exe
nvda_slave.exe
I entered on the portable file and forgot to unload Jaws. I unload Jaws but
I cannot find NVDA folder in add remove

or
under
C:\program files\nvda...
My quick question before I read all the cdocumentation is the portable only
active until I reboot?

No you don't ever need to do that
just open the program you wish to speak to you like jaws and then when
you

desire the other provided you have a hot key for it
shut jaws down and use the hot key for your other speech to start.
For instance I use jaws 11 to help others with this same so I open jaws
11

and then use the insert f4 to shut down this jaws. now I use the hot key
for jaws 12 and boom it is there. then I shut down jaws 12 and use
control

alt s and use system access as well. never shutting down my computer once

Once you install NVDA, it's a good idea to keep it as a backup in case
JAWS crashes. This way, if you ever lose speech, you can just press the
hot key for NVDA to launch it so that you can determine the problem.
Also, NVDA is useful for navigating web sites that JAWS may have trouble
with. You can always uninstall NVDA if you don't like it.

[Blind-Computing] sticky keys

2011-01-04 Thread yvonne oliver
hello
i have tested sticky keys.
it appears to be ok
although i did notice 2 things

1 it does not produce a beep sound when pressing the insert key this is both
the zero key on the numeric keypad and the insert key in the 6 pack above the
navigation keys.
i went to options and can find no check box to turn the tone on or off for this
key.
it does however produce the beep sound on the other keys i tried it on
these were alt control shift and the character required to work in conjunction
with the command keys listed.
i am still using it in the press shift key 5 times mode for now

2 when i press control insert v to find out a version the beeps work for keys
other than the insert key but the program still tells me the version of the
program i am using apart from 2 that is
1 is tom Lorimar website and the other is skype talking 9
i can get the version for skype but not skype talking
would this be because i launch skype talking from the skype command and not
skype talking itself?
but for now how do i put a check mark so that the insert key produces an
audible beep
thank you

Re: [Blind-Computing] Text to speech software?

2011-01-04 Thread Jacob Kruger
Oh, yes, and not too relevant to all, but another reason I use NVDA for some
things is it's built in/easy to make use of support for some other
languages, since while I can tell jaws to create other speech profiles,
making use of some of the eSpeak voices, for example, it just doesn't seem
as stable, so often enough, when I want to do something like quickly scan
some content in a language like Afrikaans, I just switch over to NVDA,
switch it to that language, and there you go...

The portable version just extracts to a folder that you can then copy
wherever, while the install will send it to program files, but I generally
prefer the portable one.

No you don't ever need to do that
just open the program you wish to speak to you like jaws and then when
you desire the other provided you have a hot key for it

shut jaws down and use the hot key for your other speech to start.
For instance I use jaws 11 to help others with this same so I open jaws
11 and then use the insert f4 to shut down this jaws. now I use the hot
key for jaws 12 and boom it is there. then I shut down jaws 12 and use
control alt s and use system access as well. never shutting down my
computer once

to save clutter of traffic i will answer both now
1 n v d a, you have a point there so i shall go ahead and install n d v

a then if disaster strikes with jaws like you said i will still have a
screen reader and of course i can always delete it if not to my liking.
but if it takes no room at all and does no harm while not in use then i

as well leave it there.
i do pose one question though when i restart my computer will jaws still
be

the default reader?
and how do i switch from one to the other and back again.
do i have to restart the computer each time for example restart once to
get
jaws restart again to get n d b a and restart a third time to get back

jaws?

Once you install NVDA, it's a good idea to keep it as a backup in case
JAWS crashes. This way, if you ever lose speech, you can just press
the hot key for NVDA to launch it so that you can determine the
problem. Also, NVDA is useful for navigating web sites that JAWS may
have trouble with. You can always uninstall NVDA if you don't like it.

Installing NVDA is pretty straightforward. Once NVDA has been downloaded
and saved, the set-up and installation are self-voicing, which means that
you can unload JAWS. Before you do anything, I suggest listening to a very
good audio tutorial on installing and using NVDA that is a few years old but
still useful. You can find it at:

No you don't ever need to do that
just open the program you wish to speak to you like jaws and then when
you desire the other provided you have a hot key for it

shut jaws down and use the hot key for your other speech to start.
For instance I use jaws 11 to help others with this same so I open jaws
11 and then use the insert f4 to shut down this jaws. now I use the hot
key for jaws 12 and boom it is there. then I shut down jaws 12 and use
control alt s and use system access as well. never shutting down my

The portable version just extracts to a folder that you can then copy

Yes, JAWS will still be your default screen reader when you turn on your
computer. To switchc from JAWS to NVDA, just unload JAWS with Insert-F4 and
launch NVDA using a hot key like Alt-Control-N. Of course you can create a
desktop icon for NVDA so that you can go into its Properties dialog to
create such a hot key. When you want to switch back to JAWS from NVDA,
press Insert-Q to close NVDA and press Alt-Control J to relaunch JAWS. I do
this all the time. Sometimes,if I can't get JAWS to launch with speech, I
use NVDA to access the Start menu so that I can restart my computer and
restore JAWS to normal.

[Blind-Computing] lyrics plugin

2011-01-04 Thread Negoslav Sabev

Hello,

I am searching for a winamp or general media player software that supports
automatic searching, editing and saving the lyrics of a song directly into
the music file. It's better if it works with jaws.

Can you suggest something?

hello Gerald
thank you for replies
to save clutter of traffic i will answer both now
1 n v d a, you have a point there so i shall go ahead and install n d v .
a then if disaster strikes with jaws like you said i will still have a
screen reader and of course i can always delete it if not to my liking.
but if it takes no room at all and does no harm while not in use then i
may as well leave it there.
i do pose one question though when i restart my computer will jaws still
be the default reader?

and how do i switch from one to the other and back again.
do i have to restart the computer each time for example restart once to
get jaws restart again to get n d b a and restart a third time to get back
to jaws?

2 sticky keys
i thought that was what it was but needed to make sure first of all
hopefully it is not too slow
i only really want it for use on skype talking 9 for such things as
preference changes reading of voicemail and things like changing mood text
and online status

so no real need to be extra fast there
thank you for your help

Once you install NVDA, it's a good idea to keep it as a backup in case
JAWS crashes. This way, if you ever lose speech, you can just press the
hot key for NVDA to launch it so that you can determine the problem.
Also, NVDA is useful for navigating web sites that JAWS may have trouble
with. You can always uninstall NVDA if you don't like it.

I normally just download/make use of portable version, which you literally
just extract to where you want to run it from, and then you don't even need
to uninstall it as such - just delete the folder later on.

This is also the version that will generally run quite happily off of a
flash drive on most windows computers.

Re: [Blind-Computing] NVDA was Text to speech software?

2011-01-04 Thread Mike & Barbara In Arcadia
Hi Yvonne;

There are 2 ways to uninstall the NVDA program.
1. Go to the desktop & press enter on My Computer.
2. Select Local Disk C, & press enter.
3. Arrow down to Program Files & press enter.
4. Find the NVDA folder & press enter to open.
5. Press the letter U, until you have " Uninstall.exe "
highlighted/selected, & press enter to uninstall.

The other way to uninstall is.
1. Open the control Panel.
2. Arrow down to Add or Remove Programs & press enter.
3. After your list of programs shows up/ populates, arrow down to NVDA, &
uninstall here like you would any other program.

Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

Re: [Blind-Computing] sticky keys

2011-01-04 Thread Gerald Levy

You pretty much summed it up. The sticky key feature is really designed for
people with limited finger mobility who have difficulty pressing multiple
keys at the same time. The advantage is that you can press one key at
atime. The disadvantage is that this is slower than pressing multiple keys
at a time. Try it and see if you like it. If not, just press the Shift key
five times to turn off sticky keys and return the keyboard to normal.

hello
what are sticky keys and just what do they do?
jaws says if the shift key is pressed 5 times sticky keys can be enabled.
it says that keys like shift control etcetera can be pressed one at a
time.
does this mean i would no longer have to span my fingers across a keyboard
and end up with web fingers?
for example to use items in skype talking 9 the key commands are as
follows
alt control shift and the corresponding key required for the command you
wish to execute.
now does sticky keys mean that i can press alt key let go of it press
control key let go of it press shift key let go of it and then press the
required single key without holding on to the other 3 keys?

is there any other benefiting factors from using sticky keys and what are
the bad points of using this function

thank you

No, you don't have to worry about NVDA overwriting JAWS. You can use both
screen readers on the same computer.

[Blind-Computing] sticky keys

2011-01-04 Thread yvonne oliver
hello
what are sticky keys and just what do they do?
jaws says if the shift key is pressed 5 times sticky keys can be enabled.
it says that keys like shift control etcetera can be pressed one at a time.
does this mean i would no longer have to span my fingers across a keyboard and
end up with web fingers?
for example to use items in skype talking 9 the key commands are as follows
alt control shift and the corresponding key required for the command you wish
to execute.
now does sticky keys mean that i can press alt key let go of it press control
key let go of it press shift key let go of it and then press the required
single key without holding on to the other 3 keys?

is there any other benefiting factors from using sticky keys and what are the
bad points of using this function

thank you

Re: [Blind-Computing] Text to speech software?

2011-01-04 Thread Janie Degenshein

It is a separate software so you invoke whichever one you want.
For instance, I have Jaws 11 and Jaws 12 and system access and magic and
zoomtext all on my computer as I teach beginning users of different types of
software to fit their desires.

Just choose the one you want to use and open that one
Hope this helps

If the insert key on your number pad isn't working correctly, & you trying
to use this key to open your attachments, that is probably why your

hi mike
that did not work either
however a thought has just come to mind either you or someone else said that
i had to press the caps lock key twice to perform some functions i only
pressed it once when trying to open the attachment

could this possibly be why it did not work?
anyway i found the way to set the zero key back to the numeric keypad as the
jaws key so i have gone back to that

i think the attachments may open now
i will give it another try and let you know
if this is ok then have one problem sorted

Hi Yvonne;

The keystroke for opening attachments is Insert + A. Try checking this,
go

to options, Security page, & tab to " Block images and other external
content in HTML e-mail ,"
if this box is checked, uncheck it. Tab to okay, press enter, & go ahead
& reboot the computer. What AntiVirus program are you running? Let us
know

what happens. Take

Hi Yvonne;

The keystroke for opening attachments is Insert + A. Try checking this, go
to options, Security page, & tab to " Block images and other external
content in HTML e-mail ,"
if this box is checked, uncheck it. Tab to okay, press enter, & go ahead
& reboot the computer. What AntiVirus program are you running? Let us know
what happens. Take
  care.

[Blind-Computing] Rejected?

2011-01-04 Thread Cliff Smales
I'm having a strange problem with a couple of favorite web sites.

I can go to the main page with no difficulty. When I open one of the links, any
of them, the website closes down on me.

Why is this happening? What can I do about it?

Re: [Blind-Computing] attachments in outlook express

2011-01-04 Thread Jacob Kruger
And, if you tab around the email message, or try something like alt + 6
twice to focus on subject, and then tab once, which should normally land you
in the attachments list, what happens...?

Alternatively, it's possible your attachments are being blocked by your
anti-virus, or outlook express itself.

For OE, in tools menu, options, on something like the security page, there's
an item somewhere there to make it block attachments if it thinks they might
not be safe, and you could try turning that one off, tab to and hit space
bar on ok button, and then maybe just close outlook express, and restart it
to see if the attachments are still being hidden.

Stay well
