[Blind-Computing] final message before the list is shutdown

2013-05-31 Thread David Ferrin
This is the final day for posting on this list:

I would like to take a minute to thank those of you who have made this list
a success especially to Bob, Rick and also Alex for his brief time as a
moderator on here.

We decided a couple of weeks ago that this would be the last day we would
keep the Blind Computing list in business since the general consensus is
that it has run its course. We are not closing down completely as the JAWS
Users List will remain open for the foreseeable future.

The fact is that list is much easier to moderate since it has a narrower
guideline to follow so it is more cut and dry as to what is or is not on
topic.

We received several messages of thanks to this announcement and also a death
threat believe it or not. Some people's kids get a little too demanding at
times.

Thank you all for contributing in this endeavor and with luck we'll meet
again on the information superhighway.

It saddens me to write this but these things happen, take care folks and
stay well.

Basically you pick the address off of the message header and copy it to your

Now for example if you are using win amp and I believe media player has the

thinking if you were to do that then JAWS would stay right where it is
supposed to be without a care in the world so to speak.

This is a work around but I am certain it will do what you want. Just start

then open the program again for it to play using the alternative card.

The reason for the sound switch program is so that I don't have to go to
control panel, sounds, and switch to the audio engine when I want to go down
stairs and listen to the stereo. And when I am up at the computer I want
sound to come out of the audio connexant in case I go to an internet site

You can't complain about the interface and if memory serves they were going

way to remove it, and cannot. I am sure there is some method. any help would

Hi Anna,

Try the following:
1. Open the Control Panel & find Power Options & press enter to open.
2. When power Options opens you will be on the first tab of the power
schemes tab. Home / Office Desk should be selected here.
3. Tab 3 times to your monitor settings combobox, I have mine on 10 minutes
just in case the monitor is turned on & someone forgets to turn it off, it
will turn off after 10 minutes. Tab 1 time to the hard disks combobox, I
have mine set on, never. Tab 1 time to the stand by combobox, I have mine
set on, never.
4. Tab to the apply button & press the spacebar. Now control + tab 2 times
to the, Hibernate tab.
5. You should be on the, Enable Hibernation checkbox, if this box is
checked, uncheck it with the spacebar.
6. Tab to apply, press the spacebar, tab to okay , press the spacebar or
enter to save your changes & close.

The steps above are the way my computers are set-up & these are my
preferences. I'm not saying that you should set your computer up this way,
I'm just giving an example. I don't want the computer doing anything unless
I give the commands to do so.
Hope this helps.

Sacrificing some power for response time, that is the trade off. The power

2013-05-21 Thread David Ferrin
According to his private message to those of us who manage this list we
should all be shot for shutting it down. Interesting since we do it as a
hobby and expect or receive no compensation for doing it other than the rare
event that one of us receives a donation to help offset the cost.

If anybody wants to start their own mailing list they are certainly free to
do so and in many cases utilize a number of free services available for such
a forum.

Nobody has offered so to speak to take over this list and even if somebody
wanted to step up they would have to start from the beginning. The
membership list is only available to the three of us and I will not allow it
to be shared with anybody else. In other words it is a private database and
as such is confidential. This is especially true for those who have never
posted on the list.

Never the less any more posts like the message I am replying to and this
list won't make it until lunch time never mind next Friday.

The tool bar idea is good thinking, I agree it is a possibility. Personally
I like my display set to classic, but that's just me. Also the screen
resolution is hard to say. For example on my system that I recently upgraded
from XP Media Center to 7 pro the recommended screen resolution is different
even though nothing else has changed.

Also each monitor does have its own native settings from the manufacturer,
so like I say that is a tuff call. Never the less we have given hopefully
enough information pointing in the right direction.

Go to the control panel & display .

In Display make sure that on the Desktop page that is set on, Bliss, on the

Also, did you install any programs or toolbars that might be interfering

Have you tried the, Insert + 2, keystroke for changing the Jaws echo setting
or, the, Jaws + S, keystroke for changing screen echo? For Jaws echo I have
mine set on characters & for screen echo I set mine on, highlighted.
Take care.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Modification to the guidelines

2013-05-19 Thread David Ferrin
Honestly we have yet to discuss the details in person so to speak, so far
only over email. This is Rick's brain child it just falls under my domain
since we changed over to Mailman six years ago.

Like I said and Rick has also stated we have to draw a line somewhere so
that is probably where the DMZ will land.

Hi Alan,
If we don't draw the line somewhere, this list will be nothing more than a
copy of the blind-tech list, which was not my desire when I created this
list in 2007.
At the time the list was started, the focus was laptops and desktop PCs and
their peripherals.
Now that the list belongs to Dave, he will always have the final say in any
decision and the management team will follow his lead.
If you think about it, technically, most of todays electronics can be
considered computers of sorts, but they are not within the scope of this
list.
Cel phones may be used for many things these days, but they are still
phones.

We are planning on making an addendum to the existing guidelines
possibly adding tablet computers. The documentation has not started as
of yet, just giving you folks a heads up. Phones will still be off
topic but I pads and such devices will most likely be allowed.
Obviously we will let you know the final decision.

Good morning, I am hoping that I can get some assistance from someone.
Awhile back I visited the

1.
Sound wav files for Microsoft Word, and 2. and an extensive group of wav
files of different types.
I just recently reformatted my computer and unfortunately these two items
I forgot to back up.
If there is anyone out there who knows or remember what I am speaking of,
and could assist me in getting them back, I'd greatly appreciate it.
 Thank you in advance.

It is possible the information bar is popping up. Listen closely for a soft
tone, but even if you don't hear it hit alt + the letter N to access the
information bar. From there it should be self evident what you are to do.

The procedure isn't as fully automatic as it sounds.

After entering, to acknowledge your desire to download, you nedd to tab,
twice more, to where it will ask in which folder you wish to download to.

If this matter is decided, all you need do is hit enter, and your book is on
it's way.

available.
4, press the alt-key, and down arrow, until you hear; Malty media sub-menu,
here you can either, right arrow to open, or simply press the enter key.
5, enter on audio CD. Another screen will open.
6, shift+tab once, you will hear; Listview zero items, then paste from
clipboard and The tracks will be added.

Most of my home network is already Win 7. However I still have an old Acer
computer that meets Win 7 OS specs and I'd like to put a copy of Win 7 on it
to use as a backup. If XP was not being discontinued in a year I'd just
leave as is.

Now for the challenge and hopefully some list advice. Since it is an Acer
computer the unit came with XP preinstalled along with a bunch of stuff. So
I do not have a driver disk with all necessary drivers for the system. I
know I could go with a Win 7 upgrade but I have never been a proponent of
that. I feel that is just asking to migrate any issues I've ever had on the
XP box into the Win 7 OS. I favor a clean install over a freshly formatted
drive. I believe in the past I had read of some software available that
could be run on an existing OS and copy all necessary drivers to an export
file or CD? Otherwise I don't know of any way to get the drivers off the
factory restore disk.

Thanks,

Al

I was upset last week when Kim Komando, the computer expert, recommended not

network, and I'd like to be able to show them where a document is instead of
attaching it. Makes for easier editing, etc. When I go to insert the link to
where the document is, it takes me forever to browse for the file. It'd be
so nice to be able to copy and paste the file path from the document to the
space where the file path address goes. Do you know where the file path is
located when I'm in a document?
Thanks all,
Stephanie

The fact is we can't diagnose such a problem without further data on the

Has anyone used successfully with JAWS the smartware that comes with the WD
My Passport 1TB Portable External Hard Drive? Upon searching JAWS users
lists I saw one recommendation for not installing such smartware and using
the built in back-up features of Windows 7 with an external harddrive, but I
have also heard from computer techs that using Windows backup doesn't always
do the job. I'll be backing up a lot of user created documents, datafiles
from various statistical packages, books from multiple sources, and music
primarily in my iTunes library. It would be best if this information could
be password protected and encrypted, which the smartware promises to do;
however in the past using earlier versions of JAWS with Windows XP and
external harddrives, the options accompanying the external harddrives were
not accessible. Was hoping that Windows 7 64 bit OS, JAWS 13 or 14, might do
a better job.

Comments on this smartware or the best use of external harddrives with JAWS
would be most appreciated.

You could also set up an installer at: http://ninite.com/

Create an installer for it, save it to your hard drive somewhere, and when
you want to update it, just click on it ;D.

There are many updates listed there, as well one link just for accessible

Lenny,

Try changing the USB cable that connects the Hub to your computer.
If the Hub is still charging devices plugged into it, then it's obviously
still accepting & delivering power.
If it's not delivering data, then there may be an issue with the USB cable
used to connect the Hub to your computer.
Try replacing it with a known good cable (do a direct connect of a working
device to your computer with the cable, not to the Hub) and see if the
problem persists.
If the problem goes away, then the old cable was bad; if the problem still
exists, then the Hub may be dying.

Hope This Helps.

2013-04-03 Thread David Ferrin
First of all if it is XP then by default it is 32 bit. That is because no
adaptive software so far as I know offers built in support for XP 64 bit.

Second just hit windows key and the pause key at the same time. If it says
64 bit then that is what it is, but if it does not say anything about that

[Blind-Computing] monthly guidelines

2013-04-01 Thread David Ferrin
Welcome to the Blind Computing mailing list.

This list has been created for the purpose of discussing any and all aspects
of computing with the blind user in mind.

List Guidelines:

The following are guidelines set forth by the list management team and every
member is expected to abide by them.

1. Profanity and ethnic or racial slurs will not be tolerated.

2. Flaming of individuals or groups or organizations of any kind will not be
tolerated.

3. Advertising is not permitted.

4. Political or religious inferences or discussions are not permitted.

5. Forwarded messages and attachments are not permitted. If you have an
article or message of interest which relates to the nature of this list send

it to the list owner and if it is appropriate, it will be posted to the
list. Additionally if you want to make an announcement about another list
send it to the list owner for consideration. Do not post it to the list
before
obtaining approval.

6. No off-topic posts! Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not
make it all right. Off-topic posts include but are not limited to
discussions of Blind advocacy groups,
products for the blind that are not computer-related items, Transportation
for the blind, and Job opportunities or concerns. If you are not sure
whether or not your topic is appropriate contact the list owner for approval
before posting.

7. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the
following manner:

Using the TO: field with only one list address.

The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules
to go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect
do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists
at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for
each and every list. This practice does nothing at clutter up such lists
with
unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators.

8. On topic posts may include but are not limited to discussions of
Screen readers and magnifiers, computer peripherals, (scanners printers
Braille devices etc) Computer operation, Computer maintenance and Computer
building.

9. Subject lines should be clear and to the point! Subject lines such as "I
Need help" or "Does anyone know" are not descriptive and might be ignored
by the very person who might otherwise have answered your query. Also do not
include any member names in the subject line.

10. Keep the message content relative to the topic being discussed! If the
conversation starts to drift from the original topic initiate a new
conversation message with a new subject line to reflect the new topic.

11. No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto
responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not
included. Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed!

12. The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with
flirting or other such inappropriate activities. this
is not a high tech swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means
that goods and or services will not be bought or sold using this forum.

No message headers please! Nobody wants to read an irrelevant message before
reading your post.

If you want to plug your business church or whatever do it somewhere else
not on this list!

If you want to include contact information and a tag line at the bottom of
your messages feel free to do so but do not make another message out of it.

Remember that there are people of different walks of life origin age groups
and levels of computer experience on the list. Individuals with more
knowledge and experience should be patient with those who are trying to
become more proficient.

If you have comments, questions or concerns about how the list is being run
do not post them to the list contact the list management team.

It is not the place for any individual list member to admonish another
member for an improper post let the management Team do their job.

Hopefully everyone will benefit from this list and it will allow all of us
to be more comfortable and productive using these machines that help us get
thru this thing called life!

* By joining this list you accept the guidelines as outlined above, and
agree to abide by them. If you don't agree, then you should unsubscribe.

It is best to hook in to the jacks on the back of the unit as they are not
amplified for better sound quality. You go to an electronics store and tell
them you need a cable one end will plug in to a computer sound card and the
other in to a stereo tape deck.

Why not just use a regular 3.5mm male to male patch cord? You put the one
end in the headphone jack of the cd player and the other in the microphone
jack of the computer. Of course, it would be easier to just put the cd into
the computer and get the files that way, or even to buy an external cd rom
drive so that you can plug it in and do the same. But for direct audio
transfer, I think a patch cord will work nicely.

no sir, I deleted all of that when I got my laptop. I had not been using OE
for almost 2 years now.

The "they" is time warner cable, who checked the identity and added her
identity, but still shows mine. So apparently just deleting my account from
OE and using it on win/7 could that have any baring?
Could it be a hidden kind of setting somewhere in OE or maybe in IE8?

She works from home a lot, so in sending out an email work related, people
are telling her, it's my email address they see not hers, is that not wild?

I keep trying to encourage her to just use her LP which has win-7 on it
instead. I guess this was one of those times needed to wipe the hard drive,
but that is just something I've never done and I know my sister sure
clueless.
She can receive emails from anyone, but just when she sends, it's really
me,lol.

I cleaned that pc up as much as my knowledge would allow, I never dreamed
something like this would be a problem.

But it's probably some other identity issue since I owned it and had it all
setup in my name, I need to give her the pink slip owners registration, tee
hee.

Subject: [Blind-Computing] Getting Computer to Recognize Drivers

Hi
I am trying to get my work computer to recognize the
printer/scanner/fax machine. The computer is running windows 7, and the unit
I am trying to connect to is a canon image runner 2525 or 2530 depending on
which place I am looking at for information.
Anyway, it is a wireless networked device. How people have previously
used the scanner is to access the touch screen to tell the scanner where the
scanned image should go. This of coarse is not working for me as a blind
person. Thus, I am trying to access the unit from the computer. I brought up
the basic fax and scan program for windows which told me that there was
simply no scanner or fax machine connected to the computer. On double
checking the drivers, I found that there are no scanner/fax drivers
installed. So, I went to the canon website, and after finding the driver
down load page tried to locate the scanner drivers. All I can find are the
printer and fax drivers.
I tried to install the fax driver. However, even though I can see that
the driver is installed, the windows fax and scan program still does not
recognize it.
I have two questions. First, how do I find the driver to install for
the canon scanner. Second, how do I get windows to recognize that it has a
driver for a fax machine installed? It seems to me that if it cannot
recognize the fax driver, it would not recognize a scanner driver either.
 Any help is appreciated.

God bless,

Hi David,

Yes, Openbook 8 will work in Widows7. I had to order Openbook 8 disks from
Fs for my Widows7 64 bit computer in order for Openbook 8 to work. I
believe they were around $10.00 plus shipping. Call FS at their
1-800-444-4443 number for exact prices.

>From what I understand the Pearl camera only works with Openbook 9 & not any

As far as a dongle version, I've never heard of 1 but, I haven't
investigated about 1 to any degree either.

Take care.

Does Open book 8 work in windows 7? Is it true that the Pearl camera will
only work with Open book 9 or newer? Lastly is there a dongle version of
open book 9?

I know that's a lot in a single email but I figure that's better than
multiple messages covering the same major topic.

If memory serves me correctly,
To play music files from the cartridge, you may need to create a folder
named:
audio+podcasts
and put the files in it.
You cannot shuffle the files playing, they will play in order.

I placed some audio files both wave and MP3 on an NLS cartridge both in the
root and in a folder and mine won't play them at all.

Next I can try with a standard flash drive and see what happens which
probably is the preferred method, but I thought it was worth a try.

Winamp has a plugIn called, vocal remover. It's a free plugIn and works as
well as most utilities like it. I have found that older songs work better
than those from the eighties to the present.
It's been a while since I used this and don't remember exactly what I did to
make it work.

Now there is the rub so to speak, honestly I am not sure how the computer
decides that fact. Consider this if you will, each time you press a key
you're sending a coded signal to your system for example the before
mentioned ASCII values. I happen to remember from my DOS days that the code
for a (semi colon) is the same as the F1 key being 59.

It's one of those things I let slip past me. In those days I wrote
interactive DOS batch files using a program called reply.com to test for the
error code as it was called giving me the ability to test for it and run
various commands based on the results of the test.

In short it never really mattered to me to get too deep in to it beyond the
fact I could manipulate such things for my benefit.

Ultimately I learned enough for my own needs and left the rest alone.

[Blind-Computing] to those people receiving digest messages

2013-03-02 Thread David Ferrin
I did another adjustment last evening to the threshold limit as to when a new
digest will be dispatched. Hopefully it will be not too large but also not take
too much time between postings. The last digest was almost a mega byte which
was an error on my part placing too many zeros in the field for the size of it.
Blame it on the hour of the day when I did that and call it good. At this point
all new digests will be triggered at 250 KB. With luck that will be a happy
medium.

Now I'm sure that we all know that the grawv key is just above the tab key

I remember some time ago, or should I really say, some years ago. I went in
to key labals and muted simbles, but that stopped all simbles from being
spoken.

I just now pressed the grawv key and talking desktop clock did tell me the

it kind of hard to hear the clock speaking, sence I'm using one of the

navigate back to the cartridge, focus on the folder and hit your delete key.

Your original message clearly states that you put books on the cartridge, so
to me it is reasonable to presume that you know how to navigate back to it

Hi
Some years ago back when NLS books were on tape, I bought a recorder
that played and recorded in NLS format. Now, that they have moved to the
digital age, I am wondering if it is possible to buy a unit that would allow
me to use my computer to download the books from the library website
transfer them to a portable unit, and yet still be able to record on the
portable unit? It seems to me that having a portable recorder would still be
handy. Yet I would like to be able to transfer the recordings that I make
back to the computer for editing and storage.
 Any ideas are appreciated.

Hi,

If it is the same as 2003?

1. select the column
2. press alt and o
3. use down arrow to go to column
4. press right arrow
5. choose autofit

if you wish to autofit all data:-
go to first cell
press ctrl and a for all
then do as before.

Hope this may help?

[Blind-Computing] modification to the digest settings

2013-02-18 Thread David Ferrin
By request I have just increased the size of the daily digest that those
members who receive list traffic in that manner will notice.

The amount of digests that you will receive will decrease but the size of

mail but in larger bunches.

I hope this works out for most of you out there because no way will it work
out for everybody experience has shown me in the past.

Recently a member posted about Winamp not playing the next file in a
selected list of files automatically.
It has been suggested that deleting the .ini file in the Winamp directory
will correct this problem.
I have encountered this problem before, but I didn't understand why it
happened with no apparent reason.
Well, here is the most likely cause, which is much simpler Winamp has a
command for this particular behavior, and I discovered it while editing ID
Tag information in Winamp.
Winamp shares a command keystroke with Windows, which is Control + V I
verified this in the following versions, 2.8, 5.04 and 5.62.
Maybe because of screen echo settings with Jaws or otherwise, the user is not
hearing this command when it is activated.
I haven't looked for a way to disable this keystroke,so I don't even know at
this point if that is possible.
While in Winamp, if you look in the Playback sub-menu, you will find the
command listed.
Interesting what you can learn in the wee morning hours.

go into settings tap on wifi, put in your info name of your network and
password, and save it if there's a save button think so. then it should be
an automatic thing when your away and come back it will be there. you can
ways check in settings on the 4/s and right after airplane turned off, is
the wifi and your name of your wifi should be there.
also, if you go to someone elses and you enter there info to use, the 4/s
will always remember it and when your at that location, it will be
automatically there as the wifi.

Hello friends, greetings again.

Here I am with another problem, this time of my own making.

Each time I select multiple tracks in Winamm it will play the first track in
the selection but will not play the other tracks in the list.

Now what have I done again?

2013-02-14 Thread David Ferrin
That is good to know. The fact is Rick is going to continue on here with Bob
and me running these lists. He just needs to cut some other things out for
personal reasons at this time.

The fact is there exists somewhat of a steep learning curve in order to come
up to speed moderating a Mailman mailing list, not impossible but certainly
quite different from Yahoo or Google groups.

Re: [Blind-Computing] warning about Compacting OE Folders

2013-02-11 Thread David Ferrin
I would like to add that the easiest method for locating your DBX files is
navigate to your store folder on the maintenance tab and copy that location
to the clipboard. Then cloze out outlook express and open up your run dialog
and pasting the clipboard text in there and hit enter.

Hello everyone,
I agree with David that it would not be a good idea to turn off message
compacting, if that is even possible. However, you should back up your
outlook express folder before clicking OK to compact. Five years ago after
clicking OK for compacting, my wife's computer crashed during the compacting
process, and when she rebooted and open outlook express, all her email
folders were still present, but they were empty and all her email messages
were gone. Since that time, I back up our outlook express folders before
compacting. Happily the problem has never occurred again. But if the
compacting operation is interrupted, the result is very costly. The outlook
express folder is buried deep inside many layers of subfolders, but once you
locate it, you can save the location as a favorite so you can easily locate
it in the future to back it up. You can also relocate the outlook express
folder to a different location, so that it is easy to find and back up. This
is a good practice apart from the compacting problem, since system discs do
crash.

Hi Joseph,

Try the following:

http://www.jaws-users.com/programs/FileManagement/7zip.html

7 Zip 4.65 Is A free program for unzipping all your files. You can also
compress files with it.

XP also has a zipping tool. Highlight the file you want to compress, press
the applications key to open the context menu, arrow to the Send To
sub-menu, press enter, & press enter on the compress zip folder option & XP
will compress that file / folder into a .zip File.

Hope this helped.

have you googled for drivers, sometimes you find them in the darnedest
places due to problems just like this.

the other thing to think on is resetting/restoring the computer back to when
it did work? then I know of a 20 dollar or so application that should be
able to find the driver if its in use, and allow you to make a self
extracting reinstall file for it and other drivers of your system.

any of that sound feasable ?

I can hope,
