[Blind-Computing] final message before the list is shutdown
This is the final day for posting on this list: I would like to take a minute to thank those of you who have made this list a success especially to Bob, Rick and also Alex for his brief time as a moderator on here. We decided a couple of weeks ago that this would be the last day we would keep the Blind Computing list in business since the general consensus is that it has run its course. We are not closing down completely as the JAWS Users List will remain open for the foreseeable future. The fact is that list is much easier to moderate since it has a narrower guideline to follow so it is more cut and dry as to what is or is not on topic. We received several messages of thanks to this announcement and also a death threat believe it or not. Some people's kids get a little too demanding at times. Thank you all for contributing in this endeavor and with luck we'll meet again on the information superhighway. It saddens me to write this but these things happen, take care folks and stay well. [Blind-Computing] GW connect
It occurs to me that since there hasn't been an update for over a year that the security of this program might be in question. I do not know this and as such am asking for any information you folks out there might have in this area. You can't complain about the interface and if memory serves they were going to add video support but since it hasn't happened my guess is that they dumped the project. Sacrificing some power for response time, that is the trade off. The power cost increase with that setting is minimal at the very least, I often set them that way myself. Re: [Blind-Computing] alternative lists for you all, was: RE: Modification to the guidelines
According to his private message to those of us who manage this list we should all be shot for shutting it down. Interesting since we do it as a hobby and expect or receive no compensation for doing it other than the rare event that one of us receives a donation to help offset the cost. If anybody wants to start their own mailing list they are certainly free to do so and in many cases utilize a number of free services available for such a forum. Nobody has offered so to speak to take over this list and even if somebody wanted to step up they would have to start from the beginning. The membership list is only available to the three of us and I will not allow it to be shared with anybody else. In other words it is a private database and as such is confidential. This is especially true for those who have never posted on the list. Never the less any more posts like the message I am replying to and this list won't make it until lunch time never mind next Friday. Re: [Blind-Computing] Modification to the guidelines
Honestly we have yet to discuss the details in person so to speak, so far only over email. This is Rick's brain child it just falls under my domain since we changed over to Mailman six years ago. Like I said and Rick has also stated we have to draw a line somewhere so that is probably where the DMZ will land. Now that the list belongs to Dave, he will always have the final say in any decision and the management team will follow his lead. If you think about it, technically, most of todays electronics can be considered computers of sorts, but they are not within the scope of this list. We have to draw a line somewhere or another. Besides there are to my knowledge quite a number of cell phone lists. I know there will be some heat over such a choice, but that's the job I have drawn. However I still have an old Acer computer that meets Win 7 OS specs and I'd like to put a copy of Win 7 on it to use as a backup. If XP was not being discontinued in a year I'd just leave as is. Now for the challenge and hopefully some list advice. Since it is an Acer computer the unit came with XP preinstalled along with a bunch of stuff. So I do not have a driver disk with all necessary drivers for the system. I know I could go with a Win 7 upgrade but I have never been a proponent of that. I feel that is just asking to migrate any issues I've ever had on the XP box into the Win 7 OS. I favor a clean install over a freshly formatted drive. I believe in the past I had read of some software available that could be run on an existing OS and copy all necessary drivers to an export file or CD? Otherwise I don't know of any way to get the drivers off the factory restore disk. I'll be backing up a lot of user created documents, datafiles from various statistical packages, books from multiple sources, and music primarily in my iTunes library. It would be best if this information could be password protected and encrypted, which the smartware promises to do; however in the past using earlier versions of JAWS with Windows XP and external harddrives, the options accompanying the external harddrives were not accessible. First of all if it is XP then by default it is 32 bit. That is because no adaptive software so far as I know offers built in support for XP 64 bit. [Blind-Computing] monthly guidelines
Welcome to the Blind Computing mailing list. This list has been created for the purpose of discussing any and all aspects of computing with the blind user in mind. List Guidelines: The following are guidelines set forth by the list management team and every member is expected to abide by them. 1. Profanity and ethnic or racial slurs will not be tolerated. 2. Flaming of individuals or groups or organizations of any kind will not be tolerated. 3. Advertising is not permitted. 4. Political or religious inferences or discussions are not permitted. 5. Forwarded messages and attachments are not permitted. If you have an article or message of interest which relates to the nature of this list send it to the list owner and if it is appropriate, it will be posted to the list. Additionally if you want to make an announcement about another list send it to the list owner for consideration. Do not post it to the list before obtaining approval. 6. No off-topic posts! Simply placing off topic in the subject line does not make it all right. Off-topic posts include but are not limited to discussions of Blind advocacy groups, products for the blind that are not computer-related items, Transportation for the blind, and Job opportunities or concerns. If you are not sure whether or not your topic is appropriate contact the list owner for approval before posting. 7. Cross-posting is not permitted, and members should only post in the following manner: Using the TO: field with only one list address. The reason for this is that in cases where people setup their message rules to go by the To: field often times such rules get fowled up and in effect do not work properly. Also cross posting might allow you to reach many lists at the same time but the fact is such a post might not be on topic for each and every list. This practice does nothing at clutter up such lists with unwanted off topic messages along with annoying the list moderators. 8. On topic posts may include but are not limited to discussions of Screen readers and magnifiers, computer peripherals, (scanners printers Braille devices etc) Computer operation, Computer maintenance and Computer building. 9. Subject lines should be clear and to the point! Subject lines such as "I Need help" or "Does anyone know" are not descriptive and might be ignored by the very person who might otherwise have answered your query. Also do not include any member names in the subject line. 10. Keep the message content relative to the topic being discussed! If the conversation starts to drift from the original topic initiate a new conversation message with a new subject line to reflect the new topic. 11. No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not included. Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed! 12. The discussion of anything illegal is absolutely forbidden, along with flirting or other such inappropriate activities. this is not a high tech swap shop or anything of that nature at all. This means that goods and or services will not be bought or sold using this forum. No message headers please! Nobody wants to read an irrelevant message before reading your post. If you want to plug your business church or whatever do it somewhere else not on this list! If you want to include contact information and a tag line at the bottom of your messages feel free to do so but do not make another message out of it. Remember that there are people of different walks of life origin age groups and levels of computer experience on the list. Individuals with more knowledge and experience should be patient with those who are trying to become more proficient. If you have comments, questions or concerns about how the list is being run do not post them to the list contact the list management team. It is not the place for any individual list member to admonish another member for an improper post let the management Team do their job. Hopefully everyone will benefit from this list and it will allow all of us to be more comfortable and productive using these machines that help us get thru this thing called life! * By joining this list you accept the guidelines as outlined above, and agree to abide by them. Re: [Blind-Computing] resistance cable
You can obtain such an animal at radio shack for around $5 if memory serves. Honestly it might be better to simply rip the music from a CD using media player or some such other program. Now if it's a LP record then you will have to use such a cable and recording software. The computer is running windows 7, and the unit I am trying to connect to is a canon image runner 2525 or 2530 depending on which place I am looking at for information. Anyway, it is a wireless networked device. How people have previously used the scanner is to access the touch screen to tell the scanner where the scanned image should go. This of coarse is not working for me as a blind person. Thus, I am trying to access the unit from the computer. I brought up the basic fax and scan program for windows which told me that there was simply no scanner or fax machine connected to the computer. On double checking the drivers, I found that there are no scanner/fax drivers installed. So, I went to the canon website, and after finding the driver down load page tried to locate the scanner drivers. All I can find are the printer and fax drivers. I tried to install the fax driver. However, even though I can see that the driver is installed, the windows fax and scan program still does not recognize it. I have two questions. First, how do I find the driver to install for the canon scanner. Second, how do I get windows to recognize that it has a driver for a fax machine installed? It seems to me that if it cannot recognize the fax driver, it would not recognize a scanner driver either. Any help is appreciated. God bless, Mark God loves You! Hi Rosario, Below is a similar question about creating folders in Windows7 & 2 answers that will give more detailed information for your question: From: dave Bond I'm having trouble creating new folders on our Win 7 computer. I've got some mp3 files I want to store there, and I was able to create a folder a week or so ago, but couldn't find it today. So I tried creating another one, but couldn't seem to do it the same way. I guess I need to have a better understanding of where and how to create new folders. I thought I needed to open "Libraries," and create them there. Today, I saw the usual folders--documents, music, video, and something else, but as I stated earlier, I couldn't seem to create a new folder. Ideally, I'd like to have an "Audio" folder under the "Libraries" folder. Any clarification much appreciated. Dave From: Steve Easiest way is to just do as you always did for Xp. You can go to the directory where you want to create the folder by browsing from Windows Explorer which you open with control-E. Hit alt-f for file, w for the new submenu, and arrow to folder. The library is there for a centralized spot where you can find all the files of a given type. Each library type, for pictures, documents, music etc. has its own default location. However, the library actually just points to the location of the various files of that type; in other words, you could have several spots where you have pictures - on your documents folder under mypictures, possibly at some location on-line like a facebook album, etc. and you could have the pictures library point to all those pics no matter where they are. If you open the library for my music, you can see or change the default location. But, you don't need to store your mp3's there. You can store them in your default music folder under documents, username, mymusic I think it is called. Steve From: Gene You can make folders in libraries or you can make folders while working directly in drives just as you did in Windows XP. If you create a folder in a library, it will be created in a default location. You are still creating folders on the hard drive but you are doing so from inside of a library. You can change the location where folders are made. A library allows you to see all files of a certain kind regardless of where they are on your computer. You can add folders that you want to be shown in libraries or remove folders. If you want detailed information about Libraries, you can probably find it in Cathy anne Murtha's Windows 7 book available as a free download from her site. You can also probably find good or reasonably good discussions of Libraries by looking up information on the Internet. If you don't want to work with Libraries, you can open drives and create folders just as you did in XP. The procedure for creating folders is identical to that in XP. You can open the c drive or any drive from the run dialog, or by having My Computer show on the desktop and opening it from there or by using Windows Explorer. You can also show your My Documents fold

[Blind-Computing] to those people receiving digest messages
I did another adjustment last evening to the threshold limit as to when a new digest will be dispatched. Hopefully it will be not too large but also not take too much time between postings. The last digest was almost a mega byte which was an error on my part placing too many zeros in the field for the size of it. Blame it on the hour of the day when I did that and call it good. At this point all new digests will be triggered at 250 KB. With luck that will be a happy medium. [Blind-Computing] modification to the digest settings
By request I have just increased the size of the daily digest that those members who receive list traffic in that manner will notice. The amount of digests that you will receive will decrease but the size of them will increase by almost a factor of 7. You will still receive all list mail but in larger bunches. I hope this works out for most of you out there because no way will it work out for everybody experience has shown me in the past. It has been suggested that deleting the .ini file in the Winamp directory will correct this problem. I have encountered this problem before, but I didn't understand why it happened with no apparent reason. Well, here is the most likely cause, which is much simpler Winamp has a command for this particular behavior, and I discovered it while editing ID Tag information in Winamp. Winamp shares a command keystroke with Windows, which is Control + V I verified this in the following versions, 2.8, 5.04 and 5.62. Maybe because of screen echo settings with Jaws or otherwise, the user is not hearing this command when it is activated. I haven't looked for a way to disable this keystroke,so I don't even know at this point if that is possible. While in Winamp, if you look in the Playback sub-menu, you will find the command listed. Interesting what you can learn in the wee morning hours. Re: [Blind-Computing] warning about Compacting OE Folders
I would like to add that the easiest method for locating your DBX files is navigate to your store folder on the maintenance tab and copy that location to the clipboard. Then cloze out outlook express and open up your run dialog and pasting the clipboard text in there and hit enter. However, you should back up your outlook express folder before clicking OK to compact. Five years ago after clicking OK for compacting, my wife's computer crashed during the compacting process, and when she rebooted and open outlook express, all her email folders were still present, but they were empty and all her email messages were gone. Since that time, I back up our outlook express folders before compacting. Happily the problem has never occurred again. But if the compacting operation is interrupted, the result is very costly. The outlook express folder is buried deep inside many layers of subfolders, but once you locate it, you can save the location as a favorite so you can easily locate it in the future to back it up. You can also relocate the outlook express folder to a different location, so that it is easy to find and back up. This is a good practice apart from the compacting problem, since system discs do crash. - Original Message ----- From: "David Ferrin" To: Sent: Monday, February 11, 2013 1:04 PM Subject: Re: [Blind-Computing] Automatically Compacting OE Folders > It is on by default and so far as I know you can't turn it off and to be > honest if you can I do not recommend it. > > To do it manually hit alt + F and then the letter F twice in succession. > David Ferrin > Always be yourself because the people that matter don't mind, and the ones > that mind don't matter. > - Original Message - > From: "Mike B." > To: "Blind Computing" > Sent: Monday, February 11, 2013 3:39 PM > Subject: [Blind-Computing] Automatically Compacting OE Folders > > > Hi All, > > I am having a total brain fart, too much time on the barstool, I guess! > LOL > LOL > > How do you turn on / off automatically compacting of folders in OE? Re: [Blind-Computing] Automatically Compacting OE Folders
It is on by default and so far as I know you can't turn it off and to be honest if you can I do not recommend it. To do it manually hit alt + F and then the letter F twice in succession. I sort of figured that, but it did give me pause. Actually win zip is built in to windows and has been for over 12 years that I am aware of for a fact. Interesting especially since windows 7 is quite forgiving so far as finding drivers automatically is concerned. I can't get it to work with Windows7 64 bit Pro. I get the unable to install drivers error message whenever I plug in the USB cable. I've tried with the power plugged in & not plugged in, with devices plugged into the hub & not plugged into the hub. This same unit used to work with Windows7 but, not now! It does work with XP Pro. This computer is a dual boot system. I didn't have any success checking Belkin's website for drivers but, when it worked last the drivers installed automatically. Does anyone have any advice or other avenues to try? I would really like to use this hub verses the hub I'm currently using. All help would be greatly appreciated & graciously accepted!
