oh! my! I almost forgot a now needful qualifier for all this,

if you have a solid state drive you do! not! defragment! those!

other than that exception and things like sd cards and flash drives, any
normal moving parts type hard drive can be done.

and your very welcome, I'm glad to assist,

hi Trish,

defragmenting more than once a month is as far as I see and know useless
unless your doing a lot of file intensive and altering things on a daily
basis.

about once a month is more than enough for most regular computer users, just
you need to remember to do it then!

I use a alternative to the windows defragmentation application that is
faster than the windows version called auslogics disk defragmentation:
http://auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag

but if you wish to work with and re assign the time of the windows
application, it is in my "windows 7 useful hints" download off my grab bag
site:
http://grabbag.alacorncomputer.com

along with numerous other useful hints for windows 7 use and repair.

or you can follow the tips out of one of it's files, "windows 7 tips and
tricks" below:
" Setting up scheduled defrags is easy:
1. Click the Start button, type defrag, and click Disk Defragmenter.
2. Click Configure schedule.
3. Choose a time when your computer is turned on, but you are not using it.
4. Click OK and Close to save your settings

Your disk will now be defragmented regularly. "

Hello,

Where do I find the Defrag for window's 7? I did search and thought I found

I tried going through control panel, found the maintenance button almost
entered on it, but didn't want to get somewhere that I could do more harm
than good.

So, do I envoke this maintenace button or not? Also, when I found the
defrag, it said it was set to defrag at 2/a.m. each morning, well now...I am

in the habit of shutting down my laptop each night, so should I leave it on
so it can do this defragging?

Hi,
You can also find it by going to computer, press Alt+enter on your C
Drive, now press control+Tab, tab once, and you should see it in there.

Hello. If I remember correctly, the defrag option should be
under maintenance in the control panel. You can also access it
by going to start, all programs, accessories, system tools, and
then selecting "disk defragmenter." As for whether or not you
leave your laptop turned on, that is a personal choice. If you
leave it on, it will automatically defrag at whatever time you
have set. But leaving it on obviously consumes power, either
from the battery or the ac adapter.

Apparently this doesn't apply to the new solid state drives, which have a

I'm sure there is but I have never tried to find out that information on
mine since I knew it when I bought my PC.
One way would be that you won't hear the whirring sound a hard drive
normally makes. You would probably also know when you buy your PC since the
solid state hard drive is a little more expensive, at least they were a few
years ago.

FYI, if you have a solid state hard drive it is recommended not to run

the life of the hard drive if you don't run defrag.

Denny,

Good suggestion. I know running Windows7 I turned the auto defrag
feature off. I'm not sure with a solid state drive if one should use a
registry optimization program?

FYI, if you have a solid state hard drive it is recommended not to run

defrag. First of all it isn't necessary on a SSD and secondly, it
prolongs
the life of the hard drive if you don't run defrag.

Re: [Blind-Computing] defragging

2013-01-05 Thread Mike B.
Hi Shreyas,
Below is an article written by a person from Auslogics.

How to Defrag Your Hard Drive Properly

By

Liz Cornwell

11 May 2011 in

Defragmentation

How to Defrag?

For the average computer user, defragmenting the hard drive is something
that your tech support does when you call up with a problem. Home PCs that
are

only used for a short time per day can go a long time without being
defragmented... but you'll certainly notice the number of times you tap your
finger

while waiting for a program to open increasing! Even users familiar with
defragging the hard drive sometimes aren't aware of the proper steps to take
to

ensure the job gets done the way it should - we go through them here.

Why is defragging necessary?

In the normal course of using your computer - installing and uninstalling
programs, creating documents and deleting old documents, viewing internet
pages,

etc - the files that your computer uses to get jobs done become scattered in
different physical locations across the hard disk. In other words, they
become

fragmented. The next time you request a task that uses the fragmented files,
the computer has to go searching for them - they aren't where they're meant

to be. If you've ever said "Darn that man/woman, s/he's always moving my
keys!", then take pity on your computer and defrag your hard drive properly!

How to defrag properly

Even if you do run the defrag utility that comes with Windows regularly,
chances are that you don't know how to defrag the textbook way. We'll show
you

how.

list of 7 items

First, delete any unwanted files. This will both speed up the defrag
utility, and help improve your computer's performance in general.

Clear the history and cache of every browser that you regularly use.

Empty your Recycle Bin.

Use the Disk Cleanup utility included with both Windows XP and Vista to
remove any unneeded files. Alternatively, use a third party program like the
one

included in Auslogics BoostSpeed.

Use a disk check (Chkdsk) utility to repair disk errors and fix other common
problems before defrag.

Create a backup of your system, either by making a disaster recovery disk or
backing up to external hard drive. Create a System Restore Point through
Windows

System Tools before running the defrag.

Disable Windows Pagefile before you defrag your hard drive. Go to Control
Panel -> System -> Advanced. Look for the Performance tab, and then click on
the

Settings button. Go to the Advanced tab, and click Change under the heading
Virtual Memory. Select the option for No paging file, and click Set.

list end

Now you can close any open programs, disconnect from the Internet so that
things don't try to automatically update, and run either the built in
Windows
utility,

or your third-party software of choice.

To access the inbuilt Windows defragmenter you'll need to click on the Start
button and go to All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk
Defragmenter.

Then select the drives you want to defragment and click OK.

When defragmentation is finished, you will need to re-enable the paging
file. To do that, simply follow the steps described above to access the
Virtual

Memory settings and specify the size of your paging file. System managed
size is recommended.

Third party options to defrag your hard drive

There are quite a lot of third-party programs that can perform your defrag
quicker and with increased capability (for example, defragging the System
files

that Windows won't touch). Here are some popular options:

list of 3 items

Auslogics Disk Defrag,

rated 5 stars by CNet editors, is a compact and fast freeware utility,
supplied with advanced disk optimization techniques.

MyDefrag is a disk defragmenter and optimizer for Windows 7, Vista, XP,
2000, 2003, 2008.

Defraggler is a compact and portable Windows application that supports NTFS
and FAT32 file systems.

These simple tips will help you

speed up computer

performance, so that you can enjoy that new PC feel again.

list end
Take care.

Re: [Blind-Computing] defragging

2013-01-05 Thread JM Casey
The concept of defragmenting involves reorganising the files on your drive
so they take up contiguous spaces on the disk. This should lead to faster
access, since the operating system won't have to search all over the disk
for pieces of files that should be stored sequentially, and makes it less
likely that you won't be able to access programmes or data due to disparate
sectors on the disk going bad or whatever.

Apparently this doesn't apply to the new solid state drives, which have a
completely differentt storage method.

Rosemarie, One of the easiest ways to find that function with Windows 7
Is by using your Search function.

Just press the Windows key to open the Search field.
Begin typing with the word "disk". The first option will be Disk Cleanup.
So press the spacebar after "disk" and continue typing with the D in
Defragmenter.
You probably won't get past that letter before the system brings up exactly
what you want.
Just press enter on that choice and the dialog opens.

Not exactly.

The SSD drives I am speaking of are installed in the computer rather than a
spinning mechanical drive. other than that they are very similar to any of
the cards or USB devices except that they are quite a bit faster.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Defragging my computer

2010-12-12 Thread Andre Williams
No, defragging will not damage the card, but it will begin shortening life
expectancy because of the repeated rewrites.
Reading is faster than writing to these cards but not by much.
I didn't know of such urban legends as those who know about these cards
aren't susceptible to common misinformation on the internet.
Using a modern motherboard will help release the speed of these kinds of
drives as they eliminate bottlenecks.

Well serves me right. I should have googled before this.

There is no advantage to defragmenting a SSD (Solid State Drive, they are
designed for even write operations and the access times are not influenced
by the exact location of data, it takes no more or less time to read or
write to any particular logical sector regardless of location.

All SSDs have a theoretical number of writes so, in theory defragmenting
means unnecessary writes which will reduce the number of total writes but
according to my research this theoretic number is not relevant to a working
computer.

So, defragmenting a solid state drive is no more harmful than erasing and
overwriting files on any solid state memory device. This regardless of the
urban legends to the contrary.

Hope this is helpful to someone else.

Dale leavens.

2010-12-12 Thread Dale Leavens

Because ssd is still in its infancy and you stated you purchased one of
the

older versions, you should really read up on its limitations or you risk
damaging the SSD or at the very least shortening its life.
No, you should not defrag such a drive. In fact, if you're using Windows 7
you should go into the disk defrag and confirm it is disabled.

2010-12-12 Thread Dale Leavens
Actually it is a drive with no moving parts. essentially a 64 GIG iPod built
into the computer instead of a spinning drive. The main disadvantage is
size, so far they don't have the capacity of conventional drives but they
don't draw nearly the power and are silent and very shock resistant.

I expect they are making bigger ones now but 64 GIGS was all available when
I was buying.

Something which interests me is that I have a solid state drive. Presumably
defragmenting it doesn't result in much by way of performance improvements
but I haven't read anything on the subject.

Does anyone else know?

Thanks.

go to all programs off the start menu
go to accessories
then to system tools
and then to defrag
It works for me like a gem

In Windows 7 go to run or start menu and look for dfrgui.
Tab around and use your jaws cursor to look around to get a feel for how
this works.
Find your c:\ drive then hit applications key then look for a defrag disk
option and hit enter.
You can read the page with jaws cursor to read status.

Defragging a hard drive is like tidying up your drawers. The idea is
that defragging moves all the files on the hard disk in such a way that

Yup.

The defragging analysis checks out the percentage of the drive that is
cluttered (for want of a better word), with files that are stored in smaller
pieces, so if it says you don't need to, then don't bother.
