[BlindHandyMan] front porch light

2010-09-08 Thread Brice Mijares
Okay, Last weekend we went to OSH to buy a replacement bulb for the porch
light. I got help from one of the service employees. My wife pointed out a
light fixture that was similar to ours so we got the correct light bulb. The
light is suppose to turn on at dust and turn off at dawn VIA a sensor. Well
we have a problem, the light is not turning off. We have to turn it on at
night and turn it off in the morning. So I need some trouble shooting hints
to try out. Thanks

[BlindHandyMan] leaf blowers

2010-09-08 Thread Brice Mijares
After reading about the recent post on compasses, it reminded me how one of
these may help when using a leaf blower. I know in the past I'd get all
turned around when operating a leaf blower. Well, now I'm in the market for
a new blower. Do they make them any quieter? I'd like one that you can
carry on your back.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] old refrigerator

2010-09-08 Thread Brice Mijares
It's good to keep in mind when shopping for new appliances to ask if they
carry off the old one if you buy from them. Here in California, I don't
thing you can take used appliances to a land fill. Also, I believe people
run adds that they'll pick up for free.

[BlindHandyMan] front porch light

2010-09-04 Thread Brice Mijares
Yesterday we pick up the correct light bulb for the front porch. I believe
it was 40 watts as was suggested by the service a tenant. Came home and
swamp them out. Turned the switch on and the light came on. This puzzled
me as the censor should have known it was light out so the light shouldn't
have came on. So we turned the switch off and turned it back on when it got
dark. When my wife gets up it will be light and I'll have her check it to
see if the light went off on it's own as it should have. I hope the censor
didn't go bad. I can't see both the bulb and the censor going bad at the
same time. So I'm perplexed at the moment.

[BlindHandyMan] porch light

2010-09-03 Thread Brice Mijares
The light bulb on our front porch went out. Question; being that it has
some kind of censor that turns the light on once it gets dark and turns off
in the morning when it gets light, is it a special light bulb? My wife
thinks so, but I don't think so. I think it'll takes any light bulb
providing it fits in the fixture.

2010-09-03 Thread Brice Mijares
No problems with sub degree coldness here, I live in Central California.
Hardly ever falls below 32 and the front porch is covered. Now, I have to
figure out how to change the light bulb. It is shaped like an octagon with
vertical strips of glass about inch and a half wide and about 6 inches high
with sheet metal between each strip of glass.. If it's like the one we had
at our last home, it's a pain in the ass to change light bulbs as it damn
near falls apart during the process.

Personally I go to my yahoo groups, scroll down past all the groups, and
there is some check boxes where you can set all active groups to no mail

necessary changes and save the settings.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Using Gas Grill!

2010-08-30 Thread Brice Mijares

No problem, I have a gas grill, a Weber, and a smoker. I use them all with
no problems. You can even buy wire baskets with handles to flip your meats.
For thicker meats you may want to have a talking thermostat on hand.
Personally I use my gas grill for steak, hamburgers, and hot links. Gas
grills tend to burn to damn hot to cook your thicker meats, this is where a
Weber is handy . Next weekend I plan to slow cook a nice size brisket.
I'll start it off in my Weber to get the wood smoke into the meat for a few
hours, then I'll finish of in my gas smoker for another 7 hours or so. Good
luck.

I would take a look at the comfort select beds. They let each person
select
their own comfort number. My wife and I tried them out of all places, at
Camping World for RVs and I liked my setting of 80. She liked her side at
 89. The scale is 0 to 100 so the difference between our 2 comfort
 settings
is about 10 percent. That's a huge difference but you can change your
settings at any time depending on how your back feels at any given moment.
There are 2 remotes. One for each side of the bed.

These beds are also in stores as well and go by several names. Comfort
select, Air Select, Adjustable air comfort and others. These kinds of
 beds
are everything the water bed never was. No hundreds of pounds of water to
worry about or leaks etc. These beds have a blatter inside the mattress
that is filled with air forced in by a small compressor. There are no
 lumpy
spots. My concern was with an air blatter that there might be a hill or a
valley depending on how much air was used. This was not the case however.
At the time we saw these beds they sold for 3,000 bucks for a queen size
 but
we're talking for a motor home and around 2002. Sense then, quite a few
companies make them for folks who could use better back support and the
costs have come down. If you try one of these beds out, I can tell you,
your going to want one at any price. That's what we're going to get for
 our
next bed. But, you be the judge. Try it! you'll like it! grin

 Hi All,

Here is a question for you!
We have been talking about a new bed for some time; we've had ours for
over 10 years now, and our backs are really starting to hurt.
Tonight, we were offered a Quote Unquote New king-size bed, for $50,
from the friend of a friend.
I have a thing about used beds, so even though I was told that it's new,
 I
don't trust that. I'm leery about sleeping in beds, particularly when
 you
don't know whose been sleeping in them before you.
We've been saving for it, so the money is there. What would you all do?
I turned it down and will continue to look at the store ads!

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Testing for Mold?

2010-06-17 Thread Brice Mijares
Before I paid anyone to come out, I'd have a friend come over and look for
visible signs. You can see mole growing on the walls. It's under the house
where you can't see it unless someone goes under and takes a look. Good

County Health Dept. referred me to a company that you have to pay.
When I did talk with this company, they stated they could come out and do
 an initial inspection for free.
They also stated that mold clean-up can get very, very expensive, and it
doesn't permanently cure the problem because it could potentially come
 back?
Then, he talked to me about purchasing an air purification system, one
that he swears by, of course, that only costs $750, plus tax. Go figure!

Does anyone know whether these air purification systems really work? If
anything, I would ask him, if we could try it, for a week or two, before
deciding whether or not we wanted to purchase.
I think this guy probably just wants my money, but at this point, I don't
know of any other companies that come out to test.

Isn't inspections mandatory in your state with selling a home?

You should hire an inspector who does this for a living. It's not what you
can see but rather what you can't. Water damage, dry rot, termites etc.
Those things often can't bee seen and it takes somebody who is trained in
knowing what to look for. The inspection is mandatory in many states and
the home owner should have that done in order to sell the house. If your
state doesn't require it, you can hire a professional to do the job for
you.
The fee is around 400 to 500 dollars but if your really serious about

it it's well worth the price especially if you live in an area with high

  Hi good people,

Well let me tell you a little story and try not to bore you to tears or
make this a super long message. My wife and I walk by this home and have
done so for several years. She has always commented on how lovely the
house looks and incredibly it went on the market about 10 days ago.
Apparently the couple that owned it has passed on and the kids have
  decided to sell the property.
So, here is a description, which will help set the tone of the question.
The house is a custom-built Rambler, constructed in 1954, and is all
brick. The house is not very large (according to the tax record is 1,500
square feet) and has a living room, dining room, kitchen, full bath, and
four bedrooms; on one level. I neglected to bring a tape when we took a
tour, but think I would if we take another look. There is an attic with
  a
fixed set of stairs and it has flooring down and the roof is not
  plywood,
but (I can't think of the correct name) some sort of planks with
  shingles
over that. The basement is partially finished with solid pine paneling
  and
interesting it has a solid block wall running down the middle and
apparently this was common in the 50's. It has an oil-fired boiler that
provides baseboard heat and it does have central air, but that was added
later and the air handler is in the attic and the vents are in the
  ceiling.
Ok, so the purpose of describing this house is I am curious what things
  I
should be looking for if we seriously entertain the idea of purchasing
  it.
I understand there is a breaker panel and not a fusebox. However, let me
mention a couple other things as well. There is a separate two-car
  garage
that does have a fusebox, but this is a very substantial structure that
they even put in some ceiling fans since one of the kids used to detail
cars in there. In addition, there are two (I know this sounds nuts)
walk-in freezers. I am talking freezers that are stand-alone buildings.
Apparently this gent used to cut up meat for people if they would bring
him the animal. Now the freezers are no longer operational, but they
  have
been used for storage and either would make an excellent workshop. Oh as
  a
side note, they are tossing in two tractor/mowers, a big walk-behind
mower, and a snow blower. SO, honestly, the only issues for me is little
if any closet space and that apparently was common in the 50[s as well
  and
I know I would have to install a dish washer and a few other changes.
  The
place has all hardwood floors under carpet and I can't imagine it would
take much to fix these up. So, of course I am researching whether I
  could
purchase the place that does sit on 2.5 acres and gee I could sell one
  of
them and make half my investment bak.
So, again, what stuff should I look at that could really

Does anyone here use one of the outlet timers that you put in the outlet

I do not remember enough about the details to know if a blind person could

Dan, what would be fun if you had sight, would be to use a carbon arc set up
to cut the puppy up! But it can be dangerous and a fire hazard. You use a
carbon arc lead and stick a carbon rod in holder and where it holds the
carbon rod there is a series of holes, maybe 4 or 5, I can't remember.
Anyhow, a compress air line
is hooked up to the lead and once you are ready, you press this button and
air comes out of the tip in the direction of the carbon rod. Once that
carbon rod hits metal the compress air stream blows the metal away. It
sounds like a jet engine it's so loud. When I was a Iron Worker. We'd call
it scarfing metal.

loud, and obviously you're going to need gloves a hood and a mask, and
it's really hard to tell where you're actually cutting. I had a sighted

set the floor mats on fire. And, that much cast iron would take a mighty
long time to cut anyway. I vote for shattering the thing. Not only willl
you accomplish your aim, but it could be a great stress reliever. Maybe it
could be a neighborhood thing, a case of beer or so, and invite the
neighbors to come and show off how much arm strength and how well they can
use a sledge. I'd say a sixteen pound sledge would be about right for
this, and then too, one of them is bound to have some kind of vehicle to

Two things. A friend bought a security system from Home Depot but that
 was
about four years ago and I don't know if they carry them any more. It had
 a
motion sensing camera and a VCR recorder. When someone went in front of
 the
camera it automatically turned on the recorder and ran for about a minute,
but if there was continuing movement, it would keep running.

Secondly, no matter what type of motion sensor you use, there is always
 the
problem outside of having the wind blowing tree branches or shrubs, etc.
 and
setting it off. If this happens often, you start to ignore it. Once you
start ignoring it because you think it is a tree branch, you might as well
 not even have one.

I have used some expansion bolts as well. I believe they hold up against
outward forces much better than TapCons, but TapCons do just fine in
 sheer.

The expansion bolts I've used had long shanks of steel, with a cone at one
end, and threads at the other. there were several sleeves around the
shank. When you tighten a nut onto the threaded end, it forces the
sleeves down the shank and then starts to crush them, forcing them to
spread open and wedging them into the walls of the hole.

I attached one of the railing posts of my deck to the house with these
things, and they are incredibly rock solid.

 Brice,

These are tap con that is t,a,p,c,o,n screws, not tapping screws. They
look like a regular screw, although the threads look a bit different.
They are specially designed to hold in cement or brick. Just drill a
hole, and twist them in. No shields, no nuts, just screw them in. They
 hold quite well.

[BlindHandyMan] security light with motion detector

2010-04-09 Thread Brice Mijares
Can you believe this. We move into a senior citizen mobile home park in
December. I had a regular trash can that I saved our aluminum cans that I
always smash. Well last week, I went outside to dump some and couldn't
fine the trash can. Some lousy sum bitch stole the trash can and all. Now I
need some ideas. I want something like a motion detector that will not only
light up the area, but also start a cam recorder or the likes. It had to be
someone from outside the park that did this as I found out others had there

Hello Betsy, I thought of putting one of those alarms that have a pull pin
but decided against it. Once I'm in bed, I wouldn't want to get up and turn
it off. With a 300 watt light being turned on by a motion detector or heat
sensor and lighting that area like it was day time I think it would scare
the hell out of a thief. It would also be nice to get the person on camera.

Aloha Brice,
How about putting some sort of an alarm on it so
if the can is moved it will squeal. Now that
aluminum cans are worth money, I suspect that
people wander around looking for them.

Is there anyway, preferably an easy way, to hang a ladder on a block wall?
Tomorrow I am picking up a used 8 foot step ladder. A guy purchased two
 for
a one time project and is selling them for half price. I have had this
 home
for 36 years and at least once a year thought that I should have an 8 foot
since the home has 10 foot ceilings. It is too hard to pass up the $45
price. My only problem is storage. My choices are to keep it outside,
hanging sideways under the front porch or storing in the attic.

Unless of course he gets the use of the other key.

The other problem with straightening an instrument like a key is that the
convex side of the bend is now longer.
When you straighten it the concave side lengthens. Depending on where the
bend happens it might offset the teeth enough that they no longer engage
 the tumblers accurately.

Keys like that too tend to be brittle as you already pointed out.

 Hi Brice,

Kenmore is made by World Pool. Both are very good machines. We have had
 both.

We purchase a World Pool about four years ago. We meaning my sighted wife
and I looked at a lot of wash machines. We learned that almost all the
machines on the market now take longer in their cycles to wash the
 clothes.
This is part of the water savings steps use: less water, longer cycles.
 Its
true with almost all of them. Its something we learned that we just have
 to
 get use to.

A side not, My wife liked the Maytag but it was a visual screen to select
the cycle. I couldn't use it. The Kenmore front load we found had both a
visual screen and preselect buttons. My wife likes to adjust the cycles
depending on the load of clothes she is doing. The buttons with the
 preselct
 cycles I could use.

The buttons are in a flower paddern with the center of the flower being
 the
start button. There are eight buttons around the center start button.
 Press
the cycle you want and then the center button to start. It was very very
easy to use--not that she lets me do any wash. Its more of the thing of
future safty. I pointed out to her if she sprained an ankel and be laid up
for a week, I'd have to be able to run the washer. She agreed.

Back in December we bought this mobile home. There is a wash room that had
both a washing machine and dryer that the previous owner left. Both are in
excellent condition.. Both units are made by World pool. I've never owned
 a
world pool, just Kenmore's. With the Kenmore, a normal load took no more
than 40 minutes to finish. With this World pool, it seems as if it takes a
hour an a half. The tub fills up, then it does it's adjatating cycle,
drains, spins, tub fills again for a cycle and starts adjatating again,
drain again, then starts spinning where you hear some water being injected
into the tub as it spins. Then the water injection stops and it spins for
about 5 minutes. In the pas with the Kenmore, the load would be finished,
but with this woorldpool after what you'd think was the final cycle, you
hear a buzz alerting that the load is done. But Wrong! The whole cycle
starts over again. Is there a setting that allows this second cycleto be
shut off? I'm wasting both water and power with this unnecessary secon
 cycle.

 Hi,

Congradulations on the many years of marriage. Debb and I will be
 celebrating 30 years in May.

I must say I have enjoyed conversations on the list. In fact because of
 this
list, she went out and bought a talking meter mentioned here. Up til now
she has had to read the meter and she doesn't like that: She says she has
seen fire jump out of hot sockets. Well I asked her to run the volt meter
 to
see if it were hot. That time the sound and smell told us both it was hot.
She has forgiven me, I think, but she will not forget it. So a talking
 meter
 is coming my way.

I'm sure we all have our fun stories.

One more, I use to tune up my car, back when they were not computerized.
 I'd
change the plug and then have her hold the timing light, watching the
strobe. She would tell me when things were alined and I would tighten down
 the distributer.

Dave, Yes, I knew Kenmore was made by Worlpool. Both vary good products.
 My
wife and I have been together for 34 years and married most of that time/.
We were still on our second washer and dryer when we bought this mobile
home. Since there was a set that went with the mobile home we gave our old
set away to a needy family. This set we have now we have know idea how old
it is, but my wife said that they were in very new like condition. It
 seems
to be fully accessible, there is about 6 to 8 mode buttons, and the round
dial that one turns to the start position and pushes it in to start
 it.-

 was
Blind too! The wwasher, dryer thermostat and Micro wave all had Velcro
applied as markers. I took the velcro off the micro wave and used dymo
 tape,
and brought my talking thermostat from my last home.

 Hi Brice,

Kenmore is made by World Pool. Both are very good machines. We have
 had both.

We purchase a World Pool about four years ago. We meaning my sighted
wife and I looked at a lot of wash machines. We learned that almost
all the machines on the market now take longer in their cycles to wash
 the clothes.
This is part of the water savings steps use: less water, longer cycles.
 Its
true with almost all of them. Its something we learned that we just
 have to get use to.

A side not, My wife liked the Maytag but it was a visual screen to
select the cycle. I couldn't use it. The Kenmore front load we found
had both a visual screen and preselect buttons. My wife likes to
adjust the cycles depending on the load of clothes she is doing. The
buttons with the preselct cycles I could use.

The buttons are in a flower paddern with the center of the flower
being the start button. There are eight buttons around the center
 start button.
 Press
the cycle you want and then the center button to start. It was very
very easy to use--not that she lets me do any wash. Its more of the
thing of future safty. I pointed out to her if she sprained an ankel
and be laid up for a week, I'd have to be able to run the washer. She
 agreed.

[BlindHandyMan] washing machines cycles

2010-03-28 Thread Brice Mijares
Back in December we bought this mobile home. There is a wash room that had
both a washing machine and dryer that the previous owner left. Both are in
excellent condition.. Both units are made by World pool. I've never owned
a world pool, just Kenmore's.
Is there a setting that allows this second cycleto be
shut off? I'm wasting both water and power with this unnecessary secon
cycle.

Thank You Betsy, I believe you are correct. The web site stated the newer
models had double to triple cycles. Don't think they're energy efficient
though. They use allot of water. Oh well, when my wife gets back IN Town
I'll have her get the users manual out and give me the model number so I can
read the owners manual. She can read it to me, but I can comprehend it
better if I read it myself.

Aloha Brice,
I have a Whirlpool conbo washr/dryer unit. There
is a setting for heavy-duty wash which does
something similar. I suggest that you try to find
out how to set it for a permapress load if you're not sure what it is set
on.

Perhaps if you could find out the model of the
washer, you could download a manual or you could
contact Whirlpool tech support at:
whirlpool_customerexperie...@whirlpool.com

BTW, when I recently contacted them to get a
braille overlay for my new dishwasher, they told
me they no longer provide that service.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Garbage disposal

2010-03-25 Thread Brice Mijares
Blane, do you mine me asking where your from? In my adult life, I've only
live in one place where there was no garbage disposal, and that was in an
apartment. Someone on the list made a comet yesterday that garbage
disposals were becoming a thing of the past.. I beg to differ. Tell a woman
your taking her garbage disposal away. It's to damn convenient for all.
Peeling potatoes and the likes into the sink and washing them down the
disposal is to easy. Beats peeling them over the indoors garbage container.
Besides that, cuts down the odor where you store your trash cans. And if
one decides to start a comp pile, beware of the rank odor they make.

knowing what or how a garbage disposal works. But if your serious, it's a
device that is mounted under the sink. Instead of throwing table scraps in
your garbage can, you rinse the scraps off your plate on the sink side
 where
the disposal is located . Turn the water on and flip the switch and the
table scraps are ground up and sent down the sewage pipe.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Painting indoor walls.

2010-03-24 Thread Brice Mijares
The best product that I know to clean the walls before painting is called
TSP or something like that. It removes all grease and etches the paint. But
it sounds like you need to do some sanding first to remove the pealing
paint. Who ever painted last didn't prepare the walls correctly. More than
likely they painted over dirty greasy walls.

Hi Dale,
It's pealing due to the fact that we used pine sall to wash the wall down a
couple years ago, and we're figuring it was too rough in that spot. By the
way, the people who got the home ready before we bought it weren't the
smartest bunch... ;)

Well, again, you aren't likely to get all of the paint off. The usual thing
to do where you have pealing paint is to scrape off the loose and maybe
scrub it down with a wire brush, again maybe a little sanding gently but not
directly on drywall as this will damage the paper surface then after washing
down paint over.

Getting all of the paint off of most surfaces isn't usually practical. If
you don't prepare the surface well though your new paint will begin pealing
off too.

If there are four coats since 1986 and pealing someone hasn't done a good
preparation at some point.

  Hi,
We can guarantee there is no lead paint. This paint was put on in 2006,
and we had the home inspected before making an offer. We have to strip the
paint, as it is pealing.
We are in the process of becoming lisenced as foster parents, and the
agency has asked us to fix the pealing paint and repaint.
  Sorry for any misunderstanding.

There usually isn't any good reason to remove paint and if it is very old
you probably don't want to remove it for fear you liberate old lead paint.
Generally it is sufficient to wash the paint thoroughly so the new sticks
well although you may also wish to give a gentle scrub with something like
80 grit sand paper to take off any nibs or other high points bearing in mind
the caveat of the possibility of lead paint.

 Bryce,

I have used DVD Audio Extractor for several years. It works great and is
very JAWS friendly. You can download a trial version which is as I recall
fully functional for 30 days after installing it. After that, you have to
 purchase a license for, I think, $39.99 or, maybe, $49.99, I don't
remember. I paid for it after only about a week, I liked it so much. I
have ripped the audio from hundreds of DVDs so far with no problems.

By the way, you can also play DVDs with it. Those functions are also very
 JAWS friendly.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] new tile floor- should I seal?

Hello everyone,

I am new to this list and I have a question for the group. Hubby and I are
blind and we are having our home remodeled with new tile floors put in our
kitchen, dining room, sunroom, and utility room. The grout color will be a
medium shade of bone with the grout lines 1/16 inch wide (the tiles
themselves are large-- sorry I can't remember their exact dimensions).
Anyway, I am getting conflicting advice as to whether or not to have the
grout sealed. Some say sealing it is a waste because the grout line is so
thin, the sealant will wear off, and you need to reseal every year. Others
say that sealing the grout will help prevent the grout from absorbing food
spills and stains (I have a guide dog with a very sensitive stomach), and
becoming discolored. What is your advice?

Much thanks,
Linda

 Hi,

The question: what does f.i.p. stand for?

 The story behind the question.
My wife found a very nice marbeltop sink and vanity for our bathroom. So
last night I went to take out the old one in our present bathroom. Of
 course
nothing is as easy as take out, put in.

I went to turn off the valves under the sink. I found out when I took off
the supply line that the valves no longer work. Lots of water spirting
everywhere. They felt very old and almost rusty. So it did not surprise me
that they did not work. I thought of replacing the rubber washer in the
valve but decided that new valves would be a better route to go.

I went and turned off the water at the main that I could take off this
non-working valve and send it with my sighted wife to the store to get two
new ones. Turning off the main, turning on faucets all around the house to
bleed out water from the pipes I went back to the bathroom. Well I found
 out
that the main valve also does not shut off the water completely. I found
that out when I went to take off the valve under the sink. More water
 spirting everywhere.

So I quickly put it on to stop the flow of water.

Coming out of the wall was a pipe which I measured at 7/8 of an inch
 outter
 diameter with threads.

So my wife went to the store and brought home a valve which was a half
 inch
f.i.p. valve. The valve was female and fit the male end of the pipe coming
 out of the wall perfectly.

So with water flowing out, I switched the old for the new, fitting
perfectly. Now the valves are working well.

So the question again is what does f.i.p. on this half inch valve mean?

One can get shocked if the main power comes back on. It is best to wire
in a switch to prevent this from happening. Or throw the breaker so it
won't back feed into the main power source. The best thing to do is to
put in a transfer switch to shut off the main power source before you can
feed the appliances with a generator. For if you have the generator
running without stopping the back feed into the main line, you can cause
damage to you electrical system or cause a lineman to be harmed by the
current coming from the generator into the main power lines

[BlindHandyMan] GFI's

2010-02-25 Thread Brice Mijares
Back in early December my wife and I bought a triple wide mobile home. As
most of you know, that would be in 3 sections joined together. On one of
the outside sections, there is two full bathrooms. After we moved in I had
a electrician friend of mine come in and restore power to both bathrooms
which have GFI's already installed. Once here, he found the problem right
away. On that section there is an outlet on the outside for the patio which
was fried. Also, in the breaker box, the breaker for the 2 bathrooms and the
patio outlet is GFI as well. If I lost you, I'm saying that where the
breaker is tripped, it is also equip with a extra GFI as part of the breaker
switch. That was fried too and was replaced. Well last night I plug in my
digital player to charge in the extra bathroom and there was no juice. I
reset it and asked my wife if she had any problems in the master bath, and
she told me she had to reset it every time she used the blow dryer for her
hair. Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is happening?

 Hi Everyone,

I'm labeling a whole bunch of stuff here in the house, and it seems that
 the daimo tape isn't sticking.

I've completely cleaned the surfaces well, and wiped them down with
alcohol, but the labels are coming off faster than you can say hot knife
 through butter.

Anyone have any tips they can pass along that will help me get this stuff
stuck on well, and that won't come off?

I'm literally at my tapes end, so to speak.

Just to name a few things I'm labeling are the flat panel on the
microwave, my fax machine, which I'm going to try placing the labels on
the buttons directly, as opposed to the sides of them as I did when I
first tried to lable it, my washing machine, and my dryer.

Again, I simply can't understand why the labels are coming off.

It's not humid in my house, if anything it's extra dry in here, especially
with the winter season and cold temperatures, and these appliances don't
come in direct contact with water.

I'm always making sure my hands are dry when I touch the labels, and not
greasy or anything like that, so, again, I'm at a loss.

 Thanks all.

 Victor

As to an answer of why, I don't have a answer. If the breaker feeding the
baths is GFI also I would probably remove the GFI outlets and just depend
on the circuit breaker one. Over the years I have changed the outlet
types ones a few times. Just don't seem to have the quality in them.. If
that doesn't clear the problem since I couldn't tell from the post which
was tripping. If it is the circuit breaker GFI then I would replace it
with a regular circuit breaker and leave the individual outlet GFI's in
place. If both trip or they take turns then a ground fault exists
somewhere which means open things up and really do some searching.

  How does your system work?

I have been trying to figure a way to do something like this. A camera can

The audio could be a variety of things from a chime to an alarm ringing.

  $200 is not bad.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] reizen talking atomic watch

Well, for last Christmas I received the watch. When I received it the
 hands
were out of sync with the talking watch. So I had to pay to have shipped
back to for repair. During the repair process they did something
with the chip. Before I sent it away there was a menu where I could set
 the
time. When it was returned this menu function is no longer there.
I did not really like the band so I invested another $30 for a nice band
from a local high quality jewelry store.
In December the batteries finally died. Rather than going through the
mailing process to have them replaced I took it back to the jewelry store
where they have a dedicated watch repair man. He popped in the two
 batteries
for a cost of $20. He tried to restart the watch and could not get a
 single
at the store so I brought it home thinking that it would reset at 3 AM.
When it did not I took it back with the instruction manual for him to try
again. After a few days he could not get it in sync. I called maxiaids and
they want $17.50 just to get it in the shop. I talked to the watch repair
guy and he again tried. He told me that the operational manual
 instructions
do not match the menu settings. If I send it back I will have invested
 more
than double the original purchase price.
Since I can not use the hands anyway, I decided to use it until the new
batteries quit then file 13 the watch.
I would not recommend this watch to anyone. I think that Canada has the
right idea where they do not allow it to be sold in Canada.

She was told that moisture will be trapped under the cover causing some

 Hi,

My wife has spotted some mold that is growing on the exterior of my home.
It is in a corner where the eve meets the house. It looks like it is on
the stucco, but may be on the wood as well. What is the best way of
removing it? I'm going to look around for more, but I am concerned. We
have termites too! The house is falling *smile*

Does mold start growing because of the moisture in the air and nutrients
being available on the outside? Or can it start on the inside and work
 its
way out? My kids have been getting sick lately and wonder if it could be
 a
 contributing factor.

So, if you have recommendations on how to treat the areas along with clean
up or protective gear, I'd appreciate it.

 Thank you,

 Keith

Have you ever messed with these drip trays?
I had to go through and take apart the freezer's insides again today,
 and
thaw the drain.
Planning to keep it pretty well empty for a day or two and watch it
 this
time.
I was able to probe down in the drain and reach the other side this
 time,
since I was doing the job myself, and I had more time.
I think it got fully thawed.
I found something new, it's a switch on the ice maker which kicks on
 a
little fan which blows over the spot where the cubes are formed and
flipped out?
So that's on now, rather it makes any difference or not I don't know.
Of course, I had to empty the drip pan, and that's always
 interesting.
It's got this little tab on the back of the pan which fits into a
 slot
back up under the fridge... somewhere?
So after forever messing with it and trying to feel the hole for the
 slot
with the rubbery plastic drip pan, I just pulled the whole fridge out
 and
climbed behind it and started looking at pannels.
I was able to loosen enough screws and take them out to reach in and
 feel
the back of the pan, and I found the slot it fit in.
Now, I hope the thing is in right!
Luckally no water dripped out under the fridge, but still, it's a
 pain!
and quite easy to spill the pan on the way to the sink.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] electric Garage door annoyance

2009-10-04 Thread Brice
I'd get someone with sight to take a look at one of the sensors to see if it
has a green light, if not green, the sensors aren't in line with one
another. When you manually open the door, is it easy to open and close?
The reason I ask is if the door isn't balanced correctly, it will put a
strain on the motor and stop, and you'll hear that clicking noise. The only
other problem I can remember having with mine is that little sprocket on the
motor burning out.Good luck.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] electric Garage door annoyance

 Hi ya,
I've got that annoying garage door won't open, acts like something's in
the way, but nothing's in the way thing going on.
Anyone who has an electric over-head garage door with a sensor should
 recognize this problem.
I've paced up and down, looking for anything inside the garage which might
be in the way, and I've climbed on the ladder and looked at the chain and
machine itself, I've cut the breaker off to it, and put it back on, I've
unplugged it and plugged it back in.
I've pulled the little disengage rope, and actually closed the door by
hand, and for now, I've locked it and left it until morning.
 Any suggestions?
I tapped around on the sensors to make sure I didn't knock them out of
kilter while I was cleaning in the garage while my wife was gone with her
cart, but it's just not coming to me now.
I don't think the sensors would be affected by anything outside the door.
If it keeps up, I will have to open and close the door manually tomorrow
and lock it and go out through the house once the wife and kids are down
 the driveway.
 Look forward to any hints.
I have had this problem before, but I don't remember what the simple fix
 was.
The motor turns, then reverses and does the tick tock tick tock noise
which usually means that something is in the way of the sensors, and it
doesn't want to crush it or what have you.
 Thanks,

 Matt

Re: [BlindHandyMan] propane smoker

2009-09-19 Thread Brice
I'd turn the heat up to 225 to 250, and as far as smoking time, that all
depends on the size of the bird. As a rule when smoking a bird, you want to
stay under 15 LBS. Use a thermometer and get the bird up around 175 at
least. When done, I'd wrap it in foil real good, and set it in a big Ice
chest and kept close for a hour to let it steam and soften the skin.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] spray insilation question.

2009-09-13 Thread Brice
No need to worry about your vents getting plugged up. If you get the
installation blown in professionally, they more than likely will short
change you with the installation. They blow it in in such a manner that
if the home owner was to take a look through the little entry way for
gaining access to the attic, he'd see that the installation was at the
proper height of four inches. I use to do installation about 40 years ago,
and was taught to blow the installation in by standing with the 2 by fours
in front of you running perpendicular. So as you blew the installation into
the valley, the valley between the 2 by fours would appear from the craw
space to look full to the top, but it was not so, because each valley was
lower on the near side of the crawl space.

Okay, now I understand and that is what I thought this blown stuff
was. I guess my only concern in an attic is avoiding blocking the
 vents etc.

The blown insulation, or what I call blown insulation is what you're
thinking it is. I call the stuff in a can foam insulation.

Basically the blown stuff comes in a plastic bag packed very tightly
and it looks like a bale of hey.

The blower is a machine that has a paddle wheel in it and a waste
gate on the side to control the speed at which the insulation is
 blown out.

There is a length of 2.5 inch hose and that is how you spray the
stuff around. In a wall you would want to start at the top and let
each cavity fill. There isn't enough force to start at the bottom
and hope to fill upward. Of course that means you have to cut holes
in the wall large enough to fit the hose in. I used a hole saw so I
could put the piece back in the wall later.

One warning. It takes at least 2 people to do this. The person with
the hose, and someone to open the bags, break up the bales and keep
the machine full. It helps if you are in the attic to have a message
relayer somewhere between you and the person filling the machine.

You will need to where a respirator, both people, and it can be a
game trying to relay a message back to stop the machine or whatever.

This may be a stupid question, but not knowing how this spray stuff
 works, I'm going to ask.
First I thought this was just insulation that when blown in was still
a fluffy material if you will, not that stuff that comes in a can that
expands and makes one hell of a mess you clean up with a knife. And
yeah, I used that to seal around a dryer vent and didn't realize how
much it expanded until my wife saw it the next day. WOrked great, but
man I had fun cleaning that mess up. Second, if it is the fluffy
stuff like regular insulation, couldn't you if it were possible of
course either blow it from the top down assuming you could find the
area between the walls or into the areas like plug boxes etc. assuming
you could move them? I don't know how large the holes have to be, but
like I said, don't know much about this stuff, but I'm getting
 interested.

 tnx,

I'm assuming you are talking about the foam insulation. Yes, it is
safe. Haven't had it sprayed in my current house, but when I build
my new house, I will either have it sprayed in or use the insulated
panels. Do you have the foam under your roof? Just wondering as this
could potentialy save you some money on utility bills if this is
 done.

hi listers I am thinking about getting spray insilation for my
house. the way this works is that they make a hole in the wall or
floor and they spray in the insilation and after a bit it drys and
expans in the space that it was sprayed in.
my question is to the list is this.
is any one on the list ever had this done to there walls. also is it
  safe?
  well that's it.

Did her hot water side stop all at once? Did it slowly come to a stop? Did

Folks, I was visiting my grandmother last week and she was telling me
about a problem she has been having. There are two bathrooms in her
house and apparently one of the bath tubs has no hot water. She said
there is water coming out of that side of the fixture, but it's only
cold. Now I haven't gone to look at this because apparently my
cousin's husband is a plumber, but it is unlikely he'll get to it any
time soon. So, of course I'm really curious about the problem. The
house is one level on a slab and a year or two back she had a
humidifier installed, which she seems to think is the problem, but I
doubt this, unless they installed a valve in the line that could
interrupt the flow of water to that bathroom, but then there just
wouldn't be any water at all if the valve was closed. So, surely it
can't be a valve issue because again, if the valve anywhere in the
line was closed, then you would have no water flow. My uncle who was a
plumber mainly doing sprinkler systems for commercial buildings etc.
wasn't even sure what the problem may be. So, I thought I'd toss the
idea at you good people and see what ideas may flow.
I know this isn't much info, but can't hurt to generate some thoughts.

 tnx,
