Hey all, i had a refrigerator that was a stack, meaning a freezer on
top and the frig on bottom. Anyway i had it unplugged for a while then
went to plug it in to put food in it. It cooled for a while but then
stopped cooling all at once and now when i plug it up it doesn't cool
at all. It was about a year old when it did this and now its probably
two years old because its been sitting for a year being used for snack
storage lol. Anyway any ideas on how to check it? I was thinking about
  just throwing it out. Thanks.

[BlindHandyMan] refrigerator on it's way

2010-09-08 Thread Lenny McHugh
Well, they just picked up the unit. I inquired about why it must be running.
They want to make sure that the compressor is running so they can easily
extract the Freon. The unit will be totally dismantled and everything that can
be salvaged will. They even strip the copper winding from the motor so yellow
metals are sorted as are Ferris steel and aluminum.

[BlindHandyMan] refrigerator on timer

2010-08-22 Thread Lenny McHugh
Next week when the new unit is delivered the old one will be relocated to the
basement. Since this is a backup and holds cold drinks I thought about using a
timer to help cut the electric costs. I thought about cutting the power from 10
at night to about 7 in the morning. Normally it is opened once or twice a day
for a coke or my grandson's fruit drink. The freezer is not really used
although I may hook up the ice maker for holiday or picnic use.
Is there any harm in cutting the power on a frost free unit? I know it goes
into a defrost cycle every 8 hours.

2010-08-22 Thread Dan Rossi
Lenny,

So, if you are considering just saving some money, how much does a timer
cost VS how much will you save in electricity? I mean, a fridge can't
cost more than 6 or 8 bucks a month to run, and you would save less than a
third of that. OK, so maybe you would save 20 or 30 bucks a year which
would probably recover the cost of the timer in a year or so.

I assume you aren't doing this to save energy, because having a second
refrigerator is not really an energy saver to begin with.

Hmm, can you disconnect the frost free system? Don't know if that is
possible or not, but might save as well.

What about selling it, and purchasing a newer, more efficient, smaller
fridge? Which would probably consume less energy than the larger older
fridge even with the timer scheme.

Dan,

I tend to agree with you. Turning off the frig and then turning it back on
to cool down the contents just can't save that much money because you will
have to overcome the heat which the contents have gained.

A frig which is rarely opened will usually hold it's temp pretty well and
run very little.

Lenny,

I feel that the refrigerator will consume less than half that amount if it
is only opened once or so per day. Man, when you open that refrigerator
fairly often in a hot kitchen the cool inside just gets wiped completely out
also causing tremendous moisture as well.

It is just like our house with the grandchildren runnin in and out all day.
In the summer the heat just seems to run in as fast as it can and in the
winter the cold fills the room faster than you can say Jack Robinson.

Unfortunately we are running two refrigerators in the kitchen and one of
them is 7 years old.

2010-08-22 Thread Alan Paganelli
If it's that old, it's time to replace it with a newer power saving unit.
And I would suggest an upright deep freeze over a chest type. The upright
model has shelves and it makes it easier to sort out foods. If you want to
save money, look for a manual defrost model. You'll have to defrost it
twice a year or maybe 3 times a year if you live in a high humidity area.
We've had one for years and the money you save by buying in bulk helps pay
for the thing. If the power goes off, as long as you don't open the door
on the deep freeze, it can hold out for several days. I only paid 250 bucks
for mine about 10 years ago. The shelves are fixed in the door and the
shelves in the box are not adjustable but what do you expect in a bear bones
unit. We were after a deep freeze that was cheap and wasn't going to brake
the bank or run up the power bill. In the run, it beat having a second
refrigerator.

[BlindHandyMan] refrigerator issue solved

2010-08-20 Thread Lenny McHugh
Well we have the refrigerator issue solved. First for the switch I got an
electrician in. Looking over the dilemma he is able to use the light switch
boxes a junction box and extend the raceway down to the floor then run into the
basement and up inside the wall between the dining room and basement stairway.
As far as for the actual unit we now have many more possibilities. The unit
that we planned to purchase did not have one good review. Thought we saw one
that would work but not sure of the size so called the manufacturer. With
handle it is over 32 inches eliminating it. The girl said that she would not
use the handles. I thought about that but did not want to suggest it to the
boss. Here she also considered it but did not want to suggest it to me. After
36 years one would think that we would have better communication skills.
Anyway with that in mind we most likely could get something bigger than 18.2 cu
ft.

I had not heard of a system that allowed for operation of the water etc. with
the filter out. THis is of course a nice benefit in the event you do not have
one and need to still use the water. I know the replacement process is pretty
simple for all the units I have encountered. If they made the process to
complicated,, no one would bother replacing the filter. grin

When replacing one, it is good to run water through the system, this helps

  Hi Claudia,

To the best of my knowledge, most will have these filters. You generally
will find the filter in one of two places. The first place is inside the
fridge, near the top. It may be a short cylinder, which hangs vertically
near the rear of the cabinet. Some filters are long cylinders that are
mounted horizontaly and generally mounted on either side of the cabinet.
Another place you will find filters is at the bottom of the unit behind
the kick plate. In most cases you should not have to remove the kick plate

to access the filter. In this case the filter will be mounted parallel to
  the floor.
Regardless of the configuration, these filters generally require just a
twist to unlock them from the mounting. You will find that most of these
filters will have a handle that you can grab to remove or install it and I

have even seen one where you remove the filter, pull a cap off the bottom,

which is actually a part of the fridge and matches the kick plate, and you

put on the new filter, before installation.
I hope this helps and there may be other configurations I am not aware of
  that others can share.

Hi,
This is really interesting. I have a Whirlpool side by side circa 2003 from
Sears and the filter is located at the top of the frig door. To change the
filter just pull the old filter out and put in the new one. Now, previously
I owned a side by side circa 1993 and there was no onboard filter. I
installed an external filter with a cutoff just before the little filter.
Same thing, turn off the water, remove the old filter and install the new
one.
Frankly I may well install an external filter on my current frig as the
external filter is at least half the cost of the wonderful Sears filter.
(LOLLOLLOL)
We have an electrostatic filtering system on the house water supply so the
frig filter seems to last a long time.

This sure is a lot more work than is absolutely necessary. I have not had to
drain water from the filter system. I simply open the fridge, twist the
filter loose, and just make sure things look good in there, and finally
install the new filter. I wonder if these instructions are for a particular

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Refrigerator!

2010-07-23 Thread Scott Howell
I have not heard of any need to shut off the water. THe fridge will have an
interlock that will disable use of the ice maker and water dispenser while you
change the filter. In fact with the filter that is inside the fridge cabinet,
typically opening the door is sufficient for disabling the use of water.
SO, you do not need to shut off the water supply to change the filter and if
you do, find another brand of fridge because that surely would be a very poorly
designed unit.

i do not need to with mine, and it is a Kenmore.
just twist and pull. i am guessing there is a valve that is turned when i
have to twist the filter to disengage it.
My ice and water keep working with no filter installed as well.

When replacing one, it is good to run water through the system, this helps
to clean out any manufacturing debris, and purge air from the system.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Refrigerator filter instructions

2010-07-23 Thread Scott Howell
This sure is a lot more work than is absolutely necessary. I have not had to
drain water from the filter system. I simply open the fridge, twist the filter
loose, and just make sure things look good in there, and finally install the
new filter. I wonder if these instructions are for a particular fridge.
On Jul 23, 2010, at 4:25 PM, RJ wrote:

When you are going to change and add your refrigerator water filter

Besides the water supply, you must also lower down the pressure that you can
find inside your existing refrigerator water filter. You do not want the
sudden outburst of water to hinder your ability to change your water filter.
What's more, it makes things much messier, and you will be dealing with a
 lot of cleanup later on.

 4. Remove the filter casing.

Water filters are usually protected with casing. For you to successfully add
your refrigerator water filter replacement, you have to remove the casing at
 least temporarily.

It is so much convenient for you to do this process first as you exactly
identify the water filters. To remove it, you may have to unscrew the bolts
 first.

 5. Clean the filtration system.

Do not automatically replace the refrigerator water filter. You still have
to clean the casing and the entire area first. Watch out for any present
debris, impurity, and sediment that can mix with your water and your new
 filter.

it for moving it and I can't see how to level it or is there some way to level
the compressor it self?? Also the banging seems to come and go like it will
start to bang a little then get worse threw out the day then it will start to
get better after a few hours then start over again.. Any ideas any help would

Re: [BlindHandyMan] refrigerator

2009-12-29 Thread Bob Kennedy
Really has nothing to do with leveling. That's usually a sign of a little air
in the system. The wheels to move the fridge are usually adjustable but
getting to them is a trick.

The easiest fix would be to put a piece of something like the stiffer Styrofoam
or something similar between the compressor and whatever it's bottoming out on.
Just something to absorb the shock when it stops running.

[BlindHandyMan] Refrigerator Compressor Klunk

2008-02-07 Thread Gil Laster
I have a GE Profile series side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, about
15-years-old, 21 cubic feet, model TPX21PR, TPX21BR. The compressor had always
been silent until recently it started making a loud clunk when shutting down.
The noise is the internal compressor motor hitting its external casing. I
checked the compressor mount and it is OK. The refrigerator is level
side-to-side and front-to-back. Is the shutdown clunk a sign of bad things to
come?

[BlindHandyMan] refrigerator/freezer gasket tip

2008-01-03 Thread Lenny McHugh
I knew someone that had a refrigeration repair and second hand shop. Years
ago he gave me a few tips. For the door gasket take a piece of paper and
close the door on it. If you can pull it out with very little or no
resistance use a hairdryer to heat that section. While heating you must pull
on it holding it out until it gets hot. Then hold it until it cools. This
should help make the gasket make a good seal for about a year.
If your refrigeration unit seams to be continuously running the most
probable cause is wet insulation.
He would actually place a dehumidifier inside for a few days to pull out all
of the moisture.

But I don't think it will do solder. But now you know I'll have to try it

Also Donnie, don't forget that the evaporator coil could be iced up. This
happened to one we had a couple of refrigerators ago. There was an ice
build up next to the coil in an area that didn't get any air circulation
from the fan. Over time it kept building up and building up and eventually
there was so much ice in there that the defrost heater couldn't get the coil
hot enough to melt the ice that was on the coil its self. I found this out
after taking it apart. The only cure was to shut it down for about a day to
let all the ice melt. About a year later we had to do that again and Sue

You can always try the obvious tricks like running a vacuum cleaner across
the coils if they are exposed. Clean under and behind the grill to get
rid of any dog hair, cob webs and so on.

Usually if a fridge is running almost nonstop and it still isn't cooling
down it's a bad sign. It is losing Freon usually through the compressor.
You can replace a compressor, but that is a pretty expensive item. And
most people don't have the tools required. First you have to be able to
solder the new compressor back in the system. Then you have to have
access to a vacuum pump to evacuate the system. It will need to run in
the area of 45 minutes minimum to get rid of any moisture that may have
found its way in. And that will happen just from humidity alone. But
more so, because you will have to let the existing Freon out. That will
 create condensation in the tubes.

If you can do all that, and have access to refrigeration gauges to refill
the system, then it might be worth a try.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Refrigerator Problem

2007-12-11 Thread NLG
Could be that the condenser coils just need cleaned. They do over time
accumulate dust. While you are cleaning the coils, examine the fan to make
sure it is operating. If that doesn't fix the problem it could be the defrost
timer. You can turn it with a screwdriver to see if it is stuck. Turn it
clockwise until the refrigerator quits running and see if the refrigerator will
start up again on it's own. If it doesn't, turn it clockwise again until the
refrigerator starts and leave it there until you can get a replacement defrost
timer. If the defrost timer is good you could be low on refrigerant, in which
case you will have to decide weather to put money into something that old or
replace it with a new unit.

bob's discription is correct, of course, but in the U.S. releasing freon into
the atmosphere is highly illegal. Of course in the amounts here it is
not important as a greenhouse gas but it's still a big no-no.

It could also be the thermostat checking the temperatures inside the chill
compartment and the freezer should tell you if it's getting cold enough.
Should be maybe 36 in the cold box and nearly or below 0 Fahrenheit in the
freezer.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Refrigerator Problem

2007-12-11 Thread Bob Kennedy
I have a super heat gun that does wonders defrosting. Until a few years ago I
had an upright freezer that meant self defrost. Do it yourself. I bought a
heat gun at Home Depot for things in the shop, and found it would melt ice in a
big hurry.

About a year later we had to do that again and Sue
decided it was time to get a new fridge.

[BlindHandyMan] Refrigerator and Freezer Odors

2007-08-30 Thread Boyce, Ray
To Remove Odors
Odors may be caused by food left too long, strong foods not covered or
packaged tightly, by a drip pan that needs cleaning, or by food spoiling when
power
goes off while the owner is away on vacation. A preventive measure is getting
someone to check your home every day or so, or after a power outage in your
area.

1. Remove all items from the refrigerator or freezer. Throw out any spoiled
foods. Take out removable parts and wash them and the door gasket with mild
detergent in warm water. Rinse well and wipe dry.
2. Wash the interior walls and door liner with a solution of 1-2 tablespoonsful
of baking soda and 1 quart warm water, and wipe dry. Leave the door open
and let it air out well, with a fan directed toward inside, and opened windows
if the climate permits. If the odor still remains, try one or all of the
following means of odor removal.
* Spread baking soda out on shallow pans (like shallow glass casserole dishes,
pie plates, or jelly roll pans lined with foil) and put pans on the shelves
to absorb odors, or on the bottom and in baskets of chest freezers. Leave open
and unplugged.
* Buy activated charcoal (which is specially treated to remove odor molecules
from air) at some department store housewares sections, appliance stores,
or pet shops. Spread out on shallow pans and put on the shelves of the
refrigerator. Turn the refrigerator on its low setting and run empty for a few
days
so odors will be absorbed.
* Spread cat litter in a shallow pan in the cabinet, turn on and run empty a
few days. If the odor is disappearing but is not all gone, replace old litter
with fresh litter.
* Pour several ounces of imitation vanilla (not pure extract) in a shallow
saucer, put on the shelf and let the refrigerator run empty a few days.
* Put fresh ground coffee in cereal bowls inside the refrigerator and let it
run empty several days. A slight coffee odor may remain, but will disappear
after washing again with baking soda solution.
* Pack each refrigerator shelf with crumpled newspaper. Set a cup of water on
the top shelf or sprinkle the newspaper lightly with water. Allow the
refrigerator
to run for approximately 5-6 days. This method takes a bit longer but has been
effective in removal of strong odors.
* Buy a commercial odor remover, and follow instructions exactly. Several
companies manufacture a liquid concentrate which sells for about $4.00 for 1/4
to 1/2 ounce. A couple of drops are put on a piece of cotton and placed in the
area to absorb odors, in the cabinet or in a room. Three of many brand names
are: Odor-Away by Wrap-on Co., available at hardware and hospital supply
stores; Super CD IBL Household Products by Crackerbarrel Sales, Avenal, N.J.,
available in pet supply department or special products in grocery; or
Clean-Air at some appliance repair shops. Hospital supply stores carry Dow
Chemical
Hospital Disinfectant and Deodorant Spray. Spray into the cabinet and quickly
shut the door. Repeat.
3. If none of these methods removes all the odor, then it has probably
penetrated into the insulation. Contact an appliance service company for an
estimate
on the cost of removing the liner and replacing the insulation. If the cost is
too high, you may prefer to get a new appliance. The old refriegerator could
be used for occasional cooling of soda pop where the odor will not get into the
beverage.

WARNING! If the refrigerator cannot be salvaged and is discarded, remove the
door or lid. This is the law in many areas, to prevent deaths of children who
may hide in the cabinet and suffocate.

Hi Rita,
There is one thing that you may wish to try before replacing.
I have a friend that has a used appliance shop. When he gets a unit that has
a seal that is not torn but not tight he does a simple repair. He First
cleans then pulls the seal away from the door and heats it with a hair
dryer. Then hole it away until it cools. I have used this technique on a
refrigerator that we have in the basement and I must repeat about once a
year.
He also uses a piece of paper to check the seal.
He uses a piece about the size of a dollar bill By closing the door on it
you can tell how tight the seal is by moving the paper all around and
slightly pulling on it.

I did replace one gasket where I had to fold it back and remove hex head
screws all around the door. then reversed the process with the new gasket.

RE: [BlindHandyMan] refrigerator door seal

2007-02-12 Thread Boyce, Ray
Hi Rita
This is a way you could do it.
Refrigerator Door Gasket Replacement (or How to replace a door seal)

Some people think that installing a refrigerator gasket is a difficult
job. It could be somewhat strenuous but with a few tips it's definitely
doable. Most
of the time, gaskets come in special packages which are designed to be
acceptable for shipment and at the same time provide decreased
deformity. Although,
deformity does occur, there are easy ways of bringing the gasket back to
its original shape (see Restoring Deformed Gaskets at the bottom of
this post).

Pre-Installing Tips for Magnetic Gaskets
* Wipe off the cabinet area surrounding the gasket and any food stuck
under your old gasket.
* Make sure the new gasket is at room temperature before removing it
from the package.
* When handling the gasket, carry it by the corners to make sure that
there is no damage done to the internal magnetic tape.
* If your rerfrigerator is using a three sided magnetic gasket, always
install the new gasket as the old gasket was removed.

Removing and Installing Tips (Magnetic Gaskets)
* Before removing your old gasket, take a look at how it is secured. You
can do that by pulling back on the edge of the gasket.

Method A (Retainer Mount)
1. If metal retainers are used, loosen the screws across top and half
way down each side. Don't loosen the screws too much. Just enough to
allow the gasket
to be pulled out of the retainer. Begin removing the gasket starting at
the top, then each side showing where the screws are still secure.
2. Start installing the new gasket at the top by sliding the lip of the
gasket under the retainer until you reach the point at where the old
gasket is still
attached.
3. Tighten the screws onto the new gasket up on top and on the sides.
Leave about 2 screws untightened to the old gasket.
4. Loosen the rest of the screws to the old gasket and remove it.
5. Finish installing the new gasket.
List of 2 items
* After you finish installing the gasket, close the door to check for
alignment. If you need to re-align the gasket, slightly loosen all the
screws and
flex the door in opposite direction to assure proper door seal contact
when closed. When the aligment is right, grasp edge of door about
mid-way and slowly
open door as to not warp. Re-tighten all of the screws.
* On some doors the hinge side seal might start to roll as it closes
against the cabinet shell. If that happens, petroleum jelly is used on
hinge side of
the gasket surface to help the gasket slide into place. It can also be
applied to the gasket to help with this problem.

Method B (Panel Mount)
1. If metal retainers are not used, the above steps can be followed.
However, the screws or clips have to be removed as opposed to lightly
loosened on the
retainer mount style.
2. Replace the gasket the same way discussed above by removing the old
gasket from the top and installing the new gasket without fully removing
the old
gasket.
3. Loosen the rest of the screws to the old gasket and remove it.
4. Finish installing the new gasket.

Installing a Non-Magnetic Gasket
* Non-Magnetic gaskets designs are used on mechanical latch type doors.
Follow the same installation methods as A or B.

  Hi Rita

This should not be too difficult.
If it is like the fridge that I have, you will find screws along both sides
and the top and bottom behind the flap of the door seel. Just pull back the
flap on the inside of the door and you will find the screws. I would make
sure to have all the product off the door shelves because the inside pannal
may come loose when you take out all the screws.you just slide the old one
out and screw in the new one. If you leave a couple of screws in the bottom
and start the new one at the top this should hold the pannal in place. once
you get the new one started you can take out the final screws at the bottom
and finnish the job.Pay very close attention to how the old one is assembled
before you remove it. You want to do this with any project any way. Make
sure that the back flap is behind the door pannal and the front flap is in
  front of the door pannal.
Once you have re assembled every thing It is very important to warm it up
with a hair dryer because the new seal will come folded up in a box and will
be slightly creased. Be careful not to get it so hot as to warp the rubber
seal but warm enough to make sure it is all laying nice and flat.
  Good luck

I notice there is a seam at a forty five degree angle at the corner. In

 more snow is coming. Rita

 HTH
 Ray

Hi,
Your freezer should run just about 0F and your refrigerator should be below

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Refrigerator Settings

Hi all,

Does anyone know or know where I can find the proper settings at which I
should keep my refrigerator and freezer? I'm not sure if my refrigerator
settings are too low or too high and I'd like to make sure I'm not running
the unit anymore than I need to. Thanks.

Take care,
Ed Przybylek
