If you're of the mindset that religiosity is addictive, that its
effects on the human animal are analogous to drugs, I think the
conclusion is inescapable. Banning religion won't help a single iota.

Smoking is getting banned in more and more places and people are going
along with that. A generation ago the majority smoked. Now the
majority (in the USA) are religious. I hope that goes the way of
smoking.

You don't really think we're going to see an end to tobacco use in the

intoxicants exist, humans will cultivate and consume them.

Actually a better way of putting it might be: As long as humans exist,
we will continue to cultivate and consume intoxicants.

There is no hope that your ideas regarding banning religion will ever
see fruition. Give up on the idea now and pursue something more likely
to bear fruit, such as slowly and certainly deprogramming others by
showing how it's possible to be a rational atheist. If religion ever
does go away it will be because we've moved beyond it, much as we've
(for the most part) moved beyond alchemy. Absolutely no judicial fiat
will ever cause religion to vanish.

failure. Any student of human nature would have predicted that.

If you're of the mindset that religiosity is addictive, that its
effects on the human animal are analogous to drugs, I think the
conclusion is inescapable. Banning religion won't help a single iota.

Smoking is getting banned in more and more places and people are
going along with that. A generation ago the majority smoked. Now the
majority (in the USA) are religious. I hope that goes the way of
smoking.

Only open, reasoned discussion can counteract a meme that is
parasitic and potentially lethal. You must be aware of that. This
means that nonbelievers have to be more straightforward about
putting forth their nonreligious perspectives; but it does NOT mean
we need to be aggressive, threatening, belligerent or insulting of
others' lives or intelligence.

The very best you're likely to see, ever, is an uneasy compromise
between doubt and faith. It would be more productive for you from a
personal perspective to deal with that, I think, and approach the
question from that assumption rather than the dogmatic one you've
adopted.

The best I hope to see is the end of religion. I won't get that by
being all soft and wishy-washy on evil nonsense.

infidels are very, very similar to Pat Robertson's recent endorsement
of annihilation of radical Muslims, you've got a strong case that most
people will be unable to ignore.

In neither indictment is there a larger connection made about the
"evil" of religious tendency; in both cases what you do, hopefully, is
get religious people *thinking* about what they believe, what they
preach and, ideally, about how they behave. That, to me, is
considerably more effective than pointing out that Christianity has
disturbing overtones of genocide in its history, as well as ritual
cannibalism.

It's not religious thinking that is the problem; religious thinking
*can* piggyback onto the real trouble, but it is not the actual source
of the trouble. The root problem is *any* tendency to blindly follow
*any* leader, *any* tendency to want to adhere to a creed, *any*
tendency to insist that one's own group is right while The Others are
all wrong.

As such, fundamentalist religiosity *is not the disease* -- it is a
*symptom*.

That tendency was one of the reasons the US was so primed to attack
Iraq on shallow and highly questionable evidence, and that's why you
still get apologists now insisting that Bush and co. did the "right"
thing.

But if you were paying attention in 2002, you saw that many, many
people who backed attacking Iraq were not of a right-wing persuasion.
They were simply afraid, and angry, and wanted to both get revenge on
"those people" (the meaning of the term varied from person to person)
and regain a sense of personal safety and security that they felt they
had lost.

That's not an unnatural tendency, nor is it a bizarre or
difficult-to-understand desire. And it seems to me that *some* people
get involved with fundamentalism for similar reasons: They're afraid of
that which is different from themselves, they want the world to be
easily comprehensible, and they don't feel comfortable with (or perhaps
are unskilled at handling) ethical ambiguity. And there is absolutely
no way you can sway or affect their thinking by, in essence, promoting
a direct frontal assault on ideals which form a major component of
their inner landscapes.

As your quote of Goldwater pointed out, most people tend to be hard
aligned to their faiths. What you might have missed is that the street
goes both ways; just as it's possible for a fundamentalist to be so
hardlined that he thinks it's sensible to kill medical doctors who
perform abortions, it's possible for an atheist to be so radicalized
that he advocates abolition of religion, and sometimes the religious;
this view is every bit as alienating as is the fundamentalist mindset.
I believe they are different aspects of precisely the same outlook: I'm
right, you're wrong, and that's all there is to it.

Which is a totally useless argument; it is, quite simply, dogmatic
thinking, regardless of who is actually doing the thinking.

However, on religious issues there can be little or no compromise.
There is no position on which people are so immovable as their
religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a
debate than Jesus Christ, or God, or Allah, or whatever one calls this
supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on
one's behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are
growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with
wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following
their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups
on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a
loss of money or votes or both. I'm frankly sick and tired of the
political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if
I want to be a moral person, I must believe in 'A,' 'B,' 'C,' and 'D.'
Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to
claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even
more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every
religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my
vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will
fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral
convictions to all Americans in the name of 'conservatism.'

That has been the American policy for decades.

We call it the brain drain.

It hasn't worked so well in Europe where the culture is not built around
assimilation of immigrants.

Can you lay off John and anyone else on this list you disagree with?
There was absolutely no call to even mention John in your post.
Regardless of what John believes or how much you may disagree with
him, you have no business making him the posterboy for whatever
crusade you happen to be on.

You just dropped a long way down the credibility slope AFAIC.

This is good, isn´t it? Only by having young girls catch babies

Maybe Europe should adopt this program too!

We need to recognise the real economic value of motherhood and start
paying mothers a lump sum of $50,000 for each child they produce + a
salary for the years they take off their other career to raise them.

Today on the local NPR station, Canton City Schools Superintendent
Dianne Talarico broke the silence. She announced today that Canton City
Schools would be "investigating" whether or not the system should
abandon abstinence-only programs and look towards something that will
prevent teenage pregnancies.
By all accounts, and from my own personal meetings with her, Talarico
is a good woman who cares about her students. I've never seen anyone
work harder to secure a levy to save jobs and buildings like she did in
early 2004, and I believe she will see the light on this issue as well.
But the lesson here is simple. Abstinence-only was taught at Timken
High School. Since that lesson was adopted, one out of every 7.6 girls
got pregnant.

For those asking for links to show that Canton City Schools was under
an abstinence-based sex education agenda, here's the link you need:
