Re: [BVARC] Fwd: [KARS] 2021 ARRL Handbook offer
Sorry, no. The ARRL will not see another penny come from me in form of membership. They lost my vote when they sent me a letter when it was close to time for me to renew my license saying: Join us for and we'll renew your license for free. Which to me made it sound like there was a fee to renew my license, but if I joined them, the fee would be waived. Ofcourse there is no fee to renew your license, you can do it fairly easily enough on your own through the ULS. When I have they money to spare, I will support their save the bands fund, occasionally buy books that I want. They will never count me in their ranks as a member again. KE5MUX Theresa PS. This was 4 years ago, or there about. I don't remember what the price was in the letter. All I do remember is that it sounded misleading to both myself and my roommate and it made both of us pretty angry. Howdy Kori, Those of us in are 30's may not consider ourselves old, but when you compare to the age of most hams, we're young. Hence why I jokingly call myself a triple minority: 1) Relatively young (38) 2) Female 3) Female ham without anyone else in the family being a ham operator. NO ONE, I went out and got it on my own. Welcome to the hobby and the club!! Sorry I missed the meeting, but unlike someone whom I shall be good and not name, I didn't want to zoom while driving into Houston tonight. LOL All other sounds are basically as written. Pronunciation is really hard to get right the first time with Korean, and is essential given that their words are usually very short. The thing that makes it difficult is mainly because they have a few very different vowels. I suggest listening to words several times to see if you can match them. Good references: Talk to me in Korean, The Seoul National University Korean Textbook (I used in college). To be honest this is NOT a language to pick up quickly, so if you're looking for quick and dirty, phrase books are good (particularly if they have a CD). Maybe we can try it out over HAM? Yes Korean grammar is VERY different. Their word order is different, they have these things called "particles" which connote subject or object, extremely complex verb conjugations which can indicate not only tense, but formality (there are at least 3 common ones), imperative, as a statement vs a questions, can be modified to indicate the verb as a noun or adjective, etc. So because of that, google is risky for anything but the simplest of sentences. I got into Korean because of... a girl in college... But I still listen to Kpop. If you don't know what that is don't look it up. If you do look it up, look up "보아 - 나무". 73! S. Re: [BVARC] FD thoughts
I agree with Jerry on this, I can "run", I'm not a pro but I do my best, but it's not my favorite thing to do. Half of what field day is for is introducing ham radio to non-hams. Do you really think that by introducing people new to ham radio to a room full of people who are much more interested in racking up QSOs/points than stopping and taking time to explain what's going on and answering questions is going to make them any more inclined to become hams? I can hear the argument of "That's what GOTA's for" and to a degree can agree with that. The problem I have with that is, especially in the case of a new ham or an old ham that doesn't have the ability to work HF, is that limits the ability of other hams to ELMER the new or non-hams. The first field day I went to, I learned a great deal about field day and operating HF sitting with Ross on a splitter scribeing for him. Later I actually worked up enough courage to work a half hour or hour trying to make contacts, something I wouldn't have done if I hadn't sat with Ross for that time. I don't have an issue with having contesters there and letting them run but making field day, or at least our field day, a nothing but contest stations event would effectively end my participation in Field Day with BVARC. I know points wise, I don't do much, and my help with set up and tear down is limited, and my presence may not be missed at the event. But I have no love for serous contesting (of any kind), I've done serious contest don't like it. As far as how freaking HOT it got in that house, it was built in the early 50's, I DOUBT anyone has had new insulation blown in in the last 20+ years. Doesn't matter how good/new your AC is, if the house can't hold the cold in or keep the heat out, it's going to be hotter that hell. Auxillary AC would help if the house can handle them. As far as MIDRATS go, Kellie and I did have the idea of either making a big pot of Mac and cheese or grilled cheese sandwiches, I'm not sure why we didn't. [BVARC] HELP!!! Electrician needed - The Update!!
*Update* Someone who works for the same company dad worked for was able to put us in contact with an electrician who was willing to come out and look at the situation. In the safety box there are two 110 fuses. The power going to one fuse is good, the power to the other is dead leading the electrician to believe the problem is in a lower leg of the meter. So TXU and Center Point have been notified. The electrician gave us a temporary work around so we have power in the mean time, just no water heater. Hopefully tomorrow Center Point will do a temporary disconnect, pull the meter and either their tech or the electrician can fix the problem and restore full power! [BVARC] This week on Amature Radio Roundtable
Amateur Radio Roundatable Subject: Ham Radio from Space Trying to go where no other ham radio program has gone before, W5KUB.COM will bring in Astronaut Douglas Wheelock, KF5BOC, from Star City, Russia to our live show Tuesday night June 21st. Star City is in Moscow Oblast, Russia, which has been home to the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center since the 1960s. Doug will discuss ham radio from the ISS and other interesting topics. Doug is presently the Director of NASA in Russia and is on a 6 month assignment. He has been on our show many times and is always informative and interesting as he discusses his missions in space and ham radio. Doug was very popular on ham radio aboard the ISS and made thousands of contacts. He will be getting up at 4:00 AM local Russian time to be on the show live. Please help us spread the word and join us. From our chat room, please submit your questions and we will try to get as many answered as possible. In an effort to get this amazing story out to as many hams as possible, Paul Braun, WD9GCO, field reporter and fill-in anchor at Amateur Radio Newsline, will join us during the show. What I need (among other things) is: Operators: Who wants to operate, how much, which mode(s) [CW, SSB, RTTY] Radios: What can you bring? We need several more SSB computers (please, only high quality, late model computers). All computers must have computer interfaces for logging software, preferably RS-232 or USB. I think we are covered on CW machines. K3’s can key using the RS-232 connection, other radios may need additional equipment (such as WinKey) and appropriate cables. We also need power supplies, cables, power strips, extension cords, etc. Antennas: We probably have the antennas we need, but we haven’t confirmed everything. We need to know what BVARC antennas are available, where they are and who is going to bring them. Antenna supports: We have several supports identified, but we may need additional supports as well. Please let me know what you have available. Generators: We need a couple of backup gensets and gas cans. Coax: We may need some extra coax. Time commitments: Who can help setup, tear down, provide assistance as required? Note that the fire station training room is upstairs this year, and that means a lot of moving equipment up the stairway, and down on Sunday. We could use some young blood for that. Food: Who can provide a large BBQ pit or several small ones? Bonus Points: Who can provide bonus point operations, hardware, etc.? This Thursday’s BVARC meeting will be mainly devoted to Field Day discussions. I will be making a list (and checking it twice) of all of the above. Please either email me or let me know during the meeting Thursday. Also, we plan to have a Field Day organizational meeting on Sunday, 2 – 4/5pm at the Pecan Grove Volunteer Fire Department Fire Station on 727 Pitts Road, in Richmond, TX. That is about 6/10 of a mile north of 90A on the west side. It is also where we currently plan to operate most of the stations from. Please plan to join us there if you are interested in participating. We plan to use N1MM+ Logger Software again this year. [BVARC] Antenna estimate?
Question for the group: family friend is doing some referb work on some property. The former tenant was "international and worked short wave" (friends words not mine). When the tenant left, he (as far as I can tell) took his radio with him but left the antenna(s). The property owner is looking for someone to give an estimate on what the antenna would be worth. As I've not seen the property it may just be the mast that's left. Anyone have a clue who the owner could get to do the estimate? [BVARC] This week on Amature Radio Round-Table
Amateur Radio Roundtable Subject: More Arduino for Ham Radio After being off the air last Tuesday, our show will return Tuesday, March 1. For years, many of you saw or chatted with "Granny" (my mom, Agnes Medlin) in our chat room during our special hamfest events. Mom passed away last week, just two weeks short of her 90th birthday. We will miss her, but I'm sure heaven has gigabit internet service and she will be watching! This week, March 1st, Glen Popiel, KW5GP, author of the ARRL book "Arduino for Ham Radio", will return to our studio bringing new arduino projects for ham radio. He will show a qrp/arduino 40 meter rig which he presented at Dayton last year and won "Best in Show." Glen is also working on some new books and we will talk about those. Also appearing will be Rich Moseson, W2VU, editor of CQ magazine and Editorial Director of CQ Communications, Inc discussing some exciting topics in the next issue of CQ Magazine. Our "AskRiley" segment is picking up speed as we have received a lot of new questions for Riley Hollingsworth, K4ZDH, retired Special Counsel to the FCC. Riley will be on the show every few weeks answering your questions. In many cases, Riley will be contacting you directly to discuss and answer your questions. Send your questions to askri...@w5kub.com for discussion in the program. | If you missed the Feb 16th show on Heard Island DXpedition, you can watch it here. We plan to have live video updates on our show directly from Heard Island during the operation in March and April. Please note that our shortwave broadcast frequency is changing. It will now be 5130 Khz. The U.S. Military needs the 5110 frequency, so we are moving. Amateur Radio Roundtable, is a live weekly amateur radio and shortwave program, held every Tuesday night at 8 PM CDT (0200 UTC Wednesday). The show can viewed at W5KUB.com or heard on shortwave radio station, WBCQ on 5130 KHz. To watch Amateur Radio Roundtable on Tuesday evenings, go to W5KUB.com. If you are listening on 5130 KHz, we would like to hear from you. Please send an email to t...@w5kub.com and tell us your location and signal report. We need help with topics. Re: [BVARC] Recommendation Needed -- 2 Meter Mobile
I'm in with whomever suggested the Icom - 2820H. Yes it's dual band and can do both bands at once, however you can set both monitoring frequencies to 2m and run with it. Not that difficult to program by hand (I do it quite often on the flysometimes during the 150, but don't tell Mike that). Has the separation kit, and if one day you desire to run APRS or DSTAR it's capable all you need is an addition. Re: [BVARC] Onmi directional to directional
I think it all kind of depends on how you're making said contact. Scheduled Q or one found on a spot there's a map and a way to figure out the best direction to aim. Otherwise a general point in the direction you want to talk to and search or call CQ. Such is the opinion of one who operates on a folded dipole and with the exception of Museum Ships Weekend, has never used a directional antenna. What is the most efficient way to search for contacts on a given frequency? VFO till contact then rotate to fine tune in S reading, or rotate 15 degrees then VFO the entire frequency and repeat? Please advise. 73 ___ BVARC mailing list BVARC@bvarc.org http://mail.bvarc.org/mailman/listinfo/bvarc_bvarc.org
