Re: [BVARC] EFHW?

2023-10-09 Thread Fred Blackmon via BVARC
 Good afternoon,
I actually painted my DX Comm with camo paint . I wasn't sure at first if it
would cause any problems but after researching I found that as long as the
paint doesn't contain metallic flakes or whatever it should be ok. It is
located near the back corner of my yard and since there is a street that runs
behind my house I had concerns that it would be seen being the DX Comm has the
shiny black finish on it. It is nestled in between several trees which helps
hiding it.  It blends in so well that kids and grandkids have been over
swimming in the pool and no one has even seen it or mentioned it.  I really
like how it performs and use it daily. The only issue I have is that it doesn't
work well like for local contacts such as the Houston shot 10 meter net on
Tuesdays nights. When using it I could barely hear anyone so I bought the MFJ
Cobweb that I have mounted on a 24ft pushup pole mounted behind my garage. For
the local net I extend it up as high as possible and it works well. It is a
whole lot nosier than the DX Comm so I only use for that and do try it out from
time to time in the daytime. I also camo sprayed it and it actually blend in
quite well and is hard to see from the street. I just don't want to leave it up
and have the HOA see it and then I get put on the radar and have them looking
for any other antennas.  Fred (KI5WOC )On Monday, October 9, 2023 at

If you have tall trees, you can use their longer version that’s resonant from
80 meters. Id you prefer vertical, mfj is awesome but I would definitely go
with dxcommander. I currently have a mfj1979 whip which is only 17ft. Check out
the dxcommander rapid or classic. For antenna analyzer, go for rigexpert 230
which is more than enough for many of us.

Hi everyone,

Like many hams, I live in a HOA restricted subdivision, so a
permanent HF antenna is not practical. I have been thinking for a while about
EFHW as a temporary antenna which I can set up and take down quickly. My
question has probably been asked many times so please forgive this relatively
new member for asking again. The question is do you use an EFHW antenna and is
it a good solution for HOA limited subdivisions?

ARRL sells EFHW antenna kit for $80. It is cheap and certainly seems like it
will be fun to build. It works up to 40m, but I suppose it will be possible to
extend it to 80m with a loading coil. I am considering MFJ-1910 33-ft
telescoping fiberglass mast with the antenna. As I like more choices, can
anyone suggest other options/alternatives for the mast?

Also, any suggestions for a good and reasonably priced (< $400) antenna
analyzer?

Thanks,

Amal – KT5AC

Re: [BVARC] EFHW?

2023-10-08 Thread Amal Phadke KT5AC via BVARC
Many thanks everyone for your suggestions and advice.

Venkata – Thanks for suggesting vertical antenna. I will certainly consider it.
My concern regarding verticals is the footprint required to accommodate
sufficient length of radials. Your thoughts are welcome.

Rudy – Unfortunately, I won’t be able to accommodate the longer wire length
(~132 ft) required to go up to 80m in my backyard. So, a loading coil is
probably the only option for me.

Anthony – Many thanks for suggesting building it myself. I have decided to do
just that. I will reach out to you for help.

David M. – Many thanks for suggesting NanoVNA-H4 antenna analyzer. It is good
to hear it works well for you. Anthony thought it was a good choice as well.

David K. – It is great to hear EFHW antenna is working out well for you. I
plan to build one. Running it along roof ridge vent is a great idea. I will
think about how I can accommodate that.

Jeff – I greatly appreciate the YouTube link. It is very useful.

I am planning to be at the next BVARC POTA event at Galveston
Island State Park later this month. Since I don’t have a HF rig yet, POTA will
be a good opportunity to try out my antenna if I can build it before the event.

I have an EFHW with a 49: 1 balumn (transformer) that is cut to 40 meters that
I bought at the Houston Hamfest last March. Along with a Icom 718. Just like
you, we have an HOA management that will not allow antennas. So I ran it along
the roof ridge vent. Very stealthy and you can only see maybe 6”where the wire
comes out of the roof.

It works on 40, 20, 15 and 10 very well. With an analyzer I can get 80 and 17.
12 not so much. Was set up in April and have made a ton of contacts

I am planning on building one for a portable operation when I am traveling.

If you can build it yourself Do so. There is not a lot of materials and it
doesn’t cost a lot.

Good Luck

for 10-80 meters.

That said MOST HOA rules state you can dow what ever in your back yard as long
as it cant be seen from the front street. So with that I would suggest one of
the DX Commander antenna's.You can set these up in the back yerd and odds
are you wont see it from the street..

I, too, am in an "absolutely no antennas" HOA. I built a DX Commander clone,
and they haven't said a word. I don't think anybody recognizes it as an
antenna. It just looks like a big fiberglass kite pole sticking up in the
backyard... it's been great so far. 89 DXCC entities confirmed on SSB so far.
Almost there!

with dxcommander. I currently have a mfj1979 whip which is only 17ft. Check out
the dxcommander rapid or classic. For antenna analyzer, go for rigexpert 230
which is more than enough for many of us.

I have an EFHW  with a 49: 1 balumn (transformer) that is cut to 40 meters that I bought at the Houston Hamfest last March.  Along with a Icom 718. Just like you, we have an HOA management that will not allow antennas.  So I ran it along the roof ridge vent. Very stealthy and you can only see  maybe 6”where the wire comes out of the roof. It works on  40, 20, 15 and 10 very well. With an analyzer I can get 80 and 17. 12 not so much. Was set up in April and have made a ton of contacts I am planning on building one for a portable operation when I am traveling. If you can build it yourself Do so. Re: [BVARC] EFHW?

2023-10-07 Thread Venkata Appala via BVARC
Hello Amal,
I recently got my licence and going through this process with hoa
restrictions. While ARRL efhw is great, I would recommend chameleon’s version.

Re: [BVARC] EFHW Antenna build

2022-06-23 Thread Rudolph Ackerman via BVARC
Looking  forward to this.    Is there anything that I can bring to help out.
I have a solder station, and a Robyi 2000 watt generator to power it.
Multi Meter, NanoVNA/SWR Meter (only have the included adapters)  Maybe a fold
up table to work on?    Other things?

Thanks

CW operations start at 1 pm and will continue for 24 hours. For Field Day,
operators make as many contacts as possible when they are operating.
If you would like to operate, sign up on the operators sign-up sheet. There are
some guide lines on operating so read the info on the registration.
You can sign up here:
2022 Field Day Schedule

If you have anymore questions, let me know.

Re: [BVARC] EFHW antenna kit that ARRL sales

I actually bought that kit, but I've yet to put it together.

Randy, I built an EFHW antenna from parts I gathered and it works well, but I

First project? A kit is a great way to go.

What are your thought's on the EFHW antenna kit that ARRL sales. This will be
my first HF antenna and I would like to build it my self.

Cost is $69.00 from the ARRL.

This is a kit by HF Kits out of the UK. This kit is the 4 band version (40, 20,
15 and 10) with a 66 foot wire run. I have been looking at sourcing the parts
my self, but from what I have found I would have to buy the parts from several
different places, so with trying to find every thing, and the shipping cost
it's just easier and cheaper to just order this kit.

Who know's if I build it and get it up with good SWR reading's I might even buy
a HF radio.
