Thanks Kizito, I believe care2x is still a good project despite the lack of updates over recent years. In terms of functionality it still beats most other open source HIS, and I hope to breathe more life into it. Tim On Fri, 24 Aug 2018 at 08:25, Bwana Kizito wrote: > > This should be the way to go. Re: [Care2002-developers] Current state of c2x
Hi, Well the functionality of the demo at https://care2x.kwamoja.org is probably more than 6 years old, though a lot of development work went in to making it PHP7.x compatible. As I said before (though I always tend to do these things forgetting that most people reading it are not native English speakers) what I am trying to do is to re-create care2x with code that I believe is easier for people who are not professional coders to understand, and therefore contribute to. My initial aim is to have exactly the same functionality that care2x currently has, while adding in stuff like my billing engine, procurement system, and stock control systems that already exist. To do this we required a reference system showing the functionality I wished to incorporate that I could share with my colleagues, and so was available over the web. As the "official" demo on the web site does not work, and I was told there was no plan to make it work, I set up the demo on kwamoja.org. I publicised it just in case it was of use to others. I am sure there are bugs in it, there were hundreds of changes needed doing to make it 7.x compatible and it would be a major shock if I hadn't missed a few, or I did a few wrong. There are numerous versions of care2x in use around the world, and I had to pick one, and that is the one I picked. I understand that what I am doing may seem to be dictatorial, and some may say there should be more discussions about how I am doing it, In my defence this project has had more than it's fair share of discussions, and I have repeatedly tried to get things moving on this mailing list and have failed to generate interest so in the end I took the decision to go my own way. Once we get to a certain point it will become imperative that other developers are attracted to it, but I don't want to get bogged down at this moment with hypothetical discussions about peoples favourite frameworks, toolkits, etc which experience tells me will happen if we release too early. Hopefully what we come up with is going to be of use to some people, and will form the basis for future work. If nobody likes it, well at least I tried... Re: [Care2002-developers] "same old basic problems"
Hi Alejandro, Thank you very much for your email, and very helpful comments. I am an accountant, and not a clinician, so I have always tried not to interfere with the workflow in care2x, unless otherwise instructed by clinicians. If you select "login" from the menu on the left, and login from there it shouldn't keep asking for repeated logins. It will time out after an interval but off the top if my head I can't remember what that interval is. I am aware that there are bugs in the demo I put online, the code didn't run at all on PHP7.x so I have done my best to get something running, and I fixed most of the bugs, but I know it is not 100%. As a humble bean counter I have always found the care2x code complex and impenetrable. Our first aim was to simplify the code, so that people who aren't professional coders can understand it, take it and build upon it for their own needs. We have adopted the process as Kizito suggested of taking the existing functionality and mapping it exactly in the new code. I realise what we are doing won't be to the satisfaction of everyone but they are also free to take the code and adapt it as well. Truth is I hadn't planned to say anything about our plans at this time until we had some new code to demonstrate, but when Kizito posted his mail I wanted to respond in some fashion. Your email has been circulated to all my colleagues so that we can take your comments into account, and further ideas from a clinician such as yourself are most welcome. Re: [Care2002-developers] Demo Site
Hi, I think I maybe didn't properly explain myself properly earlier. There has been no vote, discussions dried up years ago so I have unilaterally taken it upon myself with the help of some colleagues to take the existing database and redo the code as Kizito says replacing the functionality of the existing care2x, improving it where we deem necessary. This won't be to everybodies taste, but what the heck, the project was dying anyway, and if people don't like what I have decided on then they are free to take the code and do what they like with it - the beauty of Free/Open source software! Once we are a bit further down the line with this, we will release some code, with some proper documentation on the methodology I have decided on, and that is when volunteers are welcome to help us. Re: [Care2002-developers] Demo Site
Hey Kizito, habari yako? This has been discussed on and off for more than a decade. The problem is that there never was a consensus on how to do it. The reason I was looking for a demo is that we were have started on such a project ourselves. I want to get some way down the road before releasing the code so that people can properly understand the concept of what we are trying to do, otherwise we will just end up back with discussions on the concept rather than the code itself. Are you, or others prepared to help when we get to that point? The work on making the code Php7 compatible is going well and uncovering a number of hidden bugs along the way. This makes me think that once it's complete we should release a new version as it's many years since the last one. There is a very obvious question to be faced. There is functionality around in other branches that we may or may not want to include. Personally I wouldn't want billing or stock control as I think they belong in the ERP. I think that there were a few issues that arise from the ELCT project that we can learn from moving forward. Firstly they used a non standard version of care2x which meant that any bug fixes etc applied to the main version weren't always included in their version. I think it is very important to try and unite around the one code base. The fragmentation that occurred before helps nobody in the long run. Secondly there was an unwillingness from the ELCT to share the consultancy fees they were earning from the hospitals with the developers whom they wanted to maintain the project. I don't think anybody "ran away", it was a case of those who were doing the work should be the ones paid for it. I have started listing issues that need looking at [1] marking them up as 'Help Wanted'. I have written a short piece on the wiki [2] Please select an issue you want to work on, assign it to yourself (you may need to ask me to do that for you) and get going :) I will add more issues as we go. Re: [Care2002-developers] care2x and PHP 7
Most open source projects survive fine without direct funding of developers. In fact that kind of direct funding can be a curse as it discourages any voluntary developers and then when the funding dries up so does the development. My experience is that there are plenty of hospitals/health ministries prepared to pay for consultancy during implementation, and for ongoing support. It is just a question of marketing it in the areas where it is best suited. The problem is that not only have we not marketed it well, we have actively discouraged people from using it by giving the impression the project is dead. If we build it they will come :) Tim On 25 April 2016 at 19:59, Elpidio <elpidio.latori...@gmail.com> wrote: > It is kind of catch 22. Hi David, I will write something on the github wiki site and post a link here. Basically every page has a custom error_reporting() level set to hide any warnings and notices, some of which are inconsequential, some of which are obscuring real errors. My next plan is to remove all these and create one entry (probably in inc_init_main.php) which can then be altered depending on whether the code is for development or production. I prefer to develop with error_reporting set to -1 which shows absolutely everything, and ensures I don't miss anything. Hi David, I wasn't taking offence, email can be such a difficult medium for getting a sentiment across :) Re-writing care2x has been discussed for well over a decade. My first contribution to the project was an email on the subject nearly ten years ago and it was considered a very old topic then. I think if it was going to happen it would have happened. Meanwhile I hear of hospitals moving from care2x because they believe the project is dead. I know the African market well, and I strongly believe that care2x could play a big part in it. However the first step has to be to get the current code working and polished and then we can start looking at improving that code to make it more easily maintainable. Re: [Care2002-developers] care2x and PHP 7
Hi David, I wasn't pretending that doing it in a weekend was enough, but it showed that we can get it working. The way to get funding is to have an active vibrant project, my attempts to get funding for care2x have all fallen at the "care2x is dead why fund it" stage. It would be great to have your help on what we are doing. I have spent the weekend hacking away on this and have got the 2.7 branch (https://github.com/care2x/2.7) sort of working on PHP 7.0. There are a ton of warnings and notices that need looking at and I haven't checked anything like all the functionality so there is bound to be more broken stuff, but it does work, and if I can do this in a weekend we can resuscitate care2x. Re: [Care2002-developers] care2x and PHP 7
I know I have been banging on about this for a long time now and people are probably fed up :). We now have a significant problem as Ubuntu 16.04 LTS includes PHP 7.0 by default ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XenialXerus/ReleaseNotes#PHP_7.0 ) and care2x is completely broken in PHP7. Where Ubuntu goes others will follow. To put this right requires a great deal of work. The question is whether there is the will to do this? Re: [Care2002-developers] Updating Care2x database tables
I would say we have two distinct issues with the DB structure. 1 We need to ensure that we have a structure that works with the code base that we are using. This needs to be put under the installer/ directory (which I notice had been omitted from github but I have now uploaded). 2 Then we need a method for adding database updates for any new features so that users can safely update to newer versions. One technique I have used in the past is to have a directory with sequentially numbered update files in, and then when an admin user logs in the latest numbered applied is compared with the highest number in that directory and then any new updates can be applied. Tim ps I have reviewed and merged your pull request. Hi Robert I don't think this is a live system we are discussing here. I think it's an old db I sent that may not be 100% compatible with that code as many of the versions have slightly different db structures. Hi Israel, I think you will find it only *appears* to work in 5.6 as a lot of issues are being suppressed with the use of overly forgiving error_reporting() settings in individual scripts. PHP 7 won't work as a number of things deprecated in the 5 series have been removed entirely. I am more than happy to help with this effort, but don't really have the time to actually manage the process, but if someone else wants to do that I am more than happy to help. Re: [Care2002-developers] Support around page building for care2x
Hi Robert, I have been running PHP7 on my development machines for a while now and I can confirm that none of the available branches work "out of the box". The most obvious issues are that the mysql (as opposed to mysqli) extension has now been dropped entirely, and that constructors must now be named __construct() and objects cannot contain a function named the same as itself. There are other things that have been dropped too but I can't remember them off hand. Re: [Care2002-developers] Issues in care2x-tz
Hi Prabakaran I repeat the question I have asked several times already. Are you using the code from the github repository that I linked to a while back? We have done a lot of work cleaning up that code. I very much suspect the problem that you are having is due to your PHP version, again Gjergj wrote this a while back. Try dropping back to 5.3. I think everybody that you were cc'ing on your emails is on the care2x developers list, so I have clipped them all out. Re: [Care2002-developers] roadmap to care2x 3.0 up to its first release candidate (beta)
Hi On 25 September 2011 09:43, an...@e-healthexpert.org wrote: 1. The single most pragmatic and useful initiative in the Care2x project continues to be care2x_tz (I am sure that that's what has been keeping Care2x alive) I am not sure whether you intend this as a compliment or a criticism, but as someone who has worked in a number of hospitals trying to implement care2x_tz I have a few comments. Firstly I agree that it has probably been the branch that has been most used, at least on the info that seems publicly available. However it does have many limitations, and a number of the hospitals who have tried to use it have failed. One of the reasons for this is that actually the care2x_tz project has fractured into many different branches. To my mind this is to do with a lack of what you call 'command and control'. Robert has done an amazing job in trying to bring these disparate branches together, but I honestly believe that the best thing to do with care2x_tz is to scrap it, and restart the project from this latest code base. 2. The wild goose chase of the last couple of years has been: PHP6, a phone interface, GUI reshaping. Like all the other previous wild goose chases in the Care2x project, this one did not and will not bring any new interest and people to the Care2x project. Well I don't think the care2x developers can be blamed for the demise of the PHP6 project. I too have my doubts about the usefulness of the phone interface, but I'm not sure I would call it a wild goose chase, just an interesting initiative that may or may not come up with something useful. As for the gui, if you have ever used the current one you will surely agree it could be improved :-) 3. There is a strong urge to command and control the project which, as everybody knows, is very difficult in any software project and totally impossible in an Open Source Software project. The page 9 of this paper is totally surrealistic corollary of this new round. Well after many years in open source, I believe that those projects which have a strong central command are best placed to survive. Look at most of the successful projects they have this strong centre. 4. What Care2x really needs is a radical reduction in complexity, including: a) stop trying to be all things to all people b) use a single platform for development and develop code to a single platform: there were times when it was very difficult to understand if a given bug was related to the code, to the needed supporting software or to the emulator platform used to try to run all this in a different OS Either I don't understand you or this paragraph is nonsense. What emulator platform are we talking about? c) use a single widely available platform (price free and open source): with single, specific, OS flavor, DBMS, Web server, Web interface. Everybody must be using the same platform and living the same day-to-day problems, to be able to quickly see what is related to the Care2x code and what is due to idiosyncrasies of the platform; As above. d) reduce the number of tables needed to make Care2x run to half of what they are now; I agree, but have you checked out the latest code? e) modularize code. If the code logic blocs are really modularized (into closed black boxes), anybody will be able to quickly code and put into place an alternative bloc without breaking the rest of the system; This is exactly what Robert and Gjergj have been doing with this 3.0 code. Did you not look at it first before sending this email? f) do not attempt to command and control putative developers. Do not attempt to force project's roadmap, just to be able to convert it into a quick cash cow. In the case of the Care2x project people just keep arriving and leaving without seeing that illusive cow; I don't think (though Robert may correct me) that there is any intention to prevent developers from working on the core, its just that as with most projects, having commit access to the core will be restricted to those who have proved their ability first. Somewhere in the paper it is written: Build a standardized process and business outcomes Beware of the fact that standardization and innovation are opposite variables. Hmmm, I am not sure that this is correct, what is your basis for this? Since Elpidio's first code releases we have had more and more standardization and less and less innovation and creativity... and it has not been the best thing regarding the project health and wealth. Hi On 25 September 2011 14:18, J. Antas an...@e-healthexpert.org wrote: I was referring to 'command and control' not governance and leadership. Any software development project needs governance and leadership. Healthcare supporting software do need, perhaps, even more than other software projects The problem is that healthcare systems are a special kind of systems - complex adaptive systems - and those cannot be governed by means of command and control. In those systems the way to go naturally emerges from the day-to-day activities. Sometimes, under a few very special conditions, you even influence those systems. But you will not be able to dictate the way to go by decree (either of a single individual or of an illuminated oligarchy). It has been a source of amusement for me over many years that people involved in a particular kind of system, always think that theirs is special kind of system and that facts common to all other systems do not apply on theirs. The truth is normally very different... amazing job in trying to bring these disparate branches together, but I honestly believe that the best thing to do with care2x_tz is to scrap it, and restart the project from this latest code base. The real innovators have been Gjergj and Mauri, not Meggle. Most of the relevant work that is being raved now I can trace it back to Gjergj or to Mauri. I find it more difficult to trace back any good code or pragmatical ideas to Meggle. I have been following, however, that tendency that Meggle has to be the owner of the shop (looking back, I wonder, is this one of those german things). Well I know all 3 individuals on a personal and a professional level, and I am surprised, and I think they will be surprised by this rather silly and racist statement. Well I don't think the care2x developers can be blamed for the demise of the PHP6 project. I too have my doubts about the usefulness of the phone interface, but I'm not sure I would call it a wild goose chase, just an interesting initiative that may or may not come up with something useful. That's where governance should step in. To call these attempts what they are: a waste of already scarce developer resources. Without any command and control surely people can work on whatever aspects of the system they want to, not just the ones that you dictate will be a waste of time. The best ideas will get incorporated, the bad ones will die. That's how open source works. BTW I think you will find that the phone interface idea came from Mauri not Robert. As for the gui, if you have ever used the current one you will surely agree it could be improved :-) Well, I have used a lot (for a few years now, I tendo to prefer OpenEMR) and I agree that the GUI needs improvement. But that improvement is not critical. What is critical, in this fase of the project (and, at least in the last 6 years), is the simplification and modularization of the code. Well after many years in open source, I believe that those projects which have a strong central command are best placed to survive. Look at most of the successful projects they have this strong centre. A strong leadership and a lean governance mechanism. Linux, Ubuntu, Nginx, Postfix are good examples of that. MySQL, PHP and Apache are lousy examples. Just to cite a few. Exactly my point I'm pleased to see you have changed your mind are now in favour of strong leadership. Either I don't understand you or this paragraph is nonsense. What emulator platform are we talking about? Those which try to emulate a LAMP in a non L(inux) machine? Well just as equally LAMP is an emulator of a WAMP machine then isn't it. Can you maybe illustrate your point by telling us where the code works in Linux and not in Windows? c) use a single widely available platform (price free and open source): with single, specific, OS flavor, DBMS, Web server, Web interface. To be able to develop and debug Care2x and not be distracted by problems not related with the Care2x code, we should reduce variability: by using a given distro flavor, periodicaly updated following a given cicle (problems dealing with the code changes in DBMS, PHP and other supporting software are naturally taken care by that distro maintainers update mechanism). You are missing a crucial point I think. Given that apache, PHP and mysql are all available under a windows environment, how do you propose the developers should prevent people from using Care2x in windows or even on a Mac? It seems to me that having ranted about command and control earlier you are not only trying to dictate exactly what the developers can and cannot work on, but even the computer on which the user can use the software. Re: [Care2002-developers] Domain names and future of care2x
Too much emphasis is placed on roles within open source projects. The reality of open source is that the person who does the most work in each part of the project is the real head of that role. To be honest it came as a surprise to me that Elpidio was still considered to be the project manager of care2x. In recent years the de facto project manager of care2x has been Gjergj, with assistance from Robert. It is great that Mauri is now putting energy and work into the project, and that is why people are now regarding him as project manager. There is really no such thing as promotion or demotion within a project, just those who do a lot of work, and those who do a little. Re: [Care2002-developers] Care evolution
Hi, As Robert mentioned we now have a version that links completely with webERP from registration and admission through Radiology/Pharmacy/Lab through to billing, doing all the necessary accounting and stock entries automatically. I am now in the process of cleaning up that code and then feeding into sourceforge those parts that we would want in the main line. I think it is time that we start to bring the various Care2x versions together into one version. For instance having a flexible registration form that can be altered for different locations. Tim 2009/8/14 Robert Meggle meg...@merotech.de: Hi Frank, Thanks for that encouraging email! And it seems we have quite similar ideas. First of all we should focus the one release idea. By Monday next week I will upload the latest release we have done so far for the Arusha team. Tim and Beth worked long and hard to get a functional interface to webERP and now it is working. It contain even the pharmacy and stock interface and some other nice features. I am sure that Tim will comment his work by himself. This step is a quite interesting and now we are together when we talk about to centralize. At the end there should be one version and not branch what determine what could be used in what case. Also some other ideas in my mind what we could do, different scenarios I got from Hospitals. One example would be Equador who asked if there would be a way to start the implementation just with laboratory instead of registration. Other ideas are quite more easy to realize, when e.g. a internal department like the dentist clinic has appointments of patients not registered so far. Each testing step must be cleared and I am sure we will find quite many tester of our system. :-) First.. let show us together how we can use all to merge it. That would be the good step. Cleaning the code, as you mentioned, is also a needed step. Maybe we could call it code review and we have now a nice roadmap. Thanks Robert Am Freitag, den 14.08.2009, 16:59 +0300 schrieb frank tilugulilwa: Dear All, I am not intending to distort anything said below by Gjergi. It has not been an easy task. Suggestions : 1. To harness efforts/ skills of different programmers, we should have a central repository (for development version) where all changes are committed to it. No individual repos/ multiple copies. 2. There should be a way to have a Care2X stable release @ agreed interval 3. We should start cleaning the directory and file structure (what should be here and what there). we have to agree on the standards to be followed. 4. We should clean the code itself, unused code and re-arranging some. 5. We should also document the architecture and the existing modules 6. All bugs should be centrally reported. ( can use Trac etc), this will create a knowledge base as well 7. Feature requests should be communicated to the list, we should have some sort of a whitepaper before developing something for people to participate/ contribute to the idea. 8. Testing team should be identified. We can all test but at least few of us should be responsible for testing and reporting back. If we do 60% of these Care2X will be a killer application. Re: [Care2002-developers] care2utu weberp folder
Hi, The webERP from http://sourceforge.net/projects/web-erp/ will work fine. Here are some instructions for making the link work: In webERP all that needs doing is the variable $DatabaseName in the script api/api_php.php needs to be set to the name of the webERP database. In Care2x there needs to be some changes to include/care_api_classes/class_weberp.php The following lines in the constructor: $this-user = php_xmlrpc_encode(user); $this-password = php_xmlrpc_encode(password); need to contain a valid user/password for webERP which has admin privileges. The URL in the line: $this-ServerURL = http://localhost/webERP/api/api_xml-rpc.php;; needs to point to your webERP installation. (I have run this between servers at different geographical locations). For testing purposes: $this-DebugLevel should be set to 2 which will provide a lot of output in care2c but is good until you have it working. Set to 0 for normal use. You need to set the xml-rpc link to on in System Admin/System Admin. Then you should be ready to go. People always seem to run into problems so if you do let me know. Thanks, Tim ps Gjergj/Robert the files include/care_api_classes/class_weberp.php and include/care_api_classes/class_weberp_c2x.php could be moved into the main 2.6 version and I could submit patches to you to get the integration into 2.6, if that is what you want. 2009/7/20 coolman coolx coolma...@gmail.com: Hello Robert, I downloaded the care2utu latest build from svn and I have been trying hard to figure out the integration with weberp. It only exists in that version. Re: [Care2002-developers] too slowly updated of care2x, should continue exist or dead?
Care2x is clearly not dead, and clearly continues to exist. However there is a point here in that there are many sub-projects of Care2x going on around the world and the code is not finding its way back in to the main line here. This means that releases on sourceforge are infrequent and updates to sourceforge svn are infrequent giving an impression of a lack of activity, when the reality is a lot of activity. Maybe more needs to be done to bring these other projects code into sourceforge. Re: [Care2002-developers] important notice
Hi Gjergj, Much as I admire the work that you do on Care2X I must disagree with you on this one. Up until tonight 304 mails have been sent to the developers list in the 299 days of 2008. Fractionally over one a day on average. This level of volume is so small that there isn't a problem of genuine developers emails getting lost in a flood of OT postings. Deleting emails that you consider should be on another list, or making the list a private one, can only serve to put potential users/developers off. This can easily give the impression of a project clique. Much better to deal with the question, and politely point the mailer in the direction of a more suitable list/forum. On any open source project it is important to maintain as many lines of communication as possible, and to deal with all requests in a sensitive and polite way. Any trolls can easily be got rid of by the simple process of ignoring them. Re: [Care2002-developers] Framework?
Hi, Just though I would put my two penneth into this discussion. I have been following this mailing list for a while now, and feel a little bit frustrated with this project. It seems to me that care2k has become a reasonable product by v2.5, and is on the way to becoming a good product. Then it seems it was decided to scrap all this good work and rewrite it from scratch. Why? It seems to me that the way forward is one of continuous improvement to the base product we have. It also seems to me that the project has become so wrapped up in the tools that it wants to use, that it has forgotten what its purpose was. That is to produce good open source software for use in hospitals. My advice is to take what we have that is working (ie v2.5), look for a way to improve it, and do that. When that is done, look for another way to improve it, and do that. Anyway, enough from me, just let me finish by saying _please_ dont let this project die, by spending years deliberating over this framework, or that set of tools etc Thanks Tim On 11/02/2008, Dott Claudio G. Re: [Care2002-developers] Integrating the DB's

Surely this is only making things more complicated than it needs to be, and making maintenance a nightmare. Both databases can be accessed from within the same scripts. All you need to worry about is when you need a query that accesses both databases - I'm not an expert on Care2x but I know weberp pretty well, and I would be surprised if you need to do this often, if at all. More important is a common login, and shared session variables, and I would have thought this was a better area to put our efforts into. Thanks Tim - This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc.
