I had a few that asked me to share my story and approach , so since i'm on a 8.5 hour flight I figured now was as good a time as any. November 2011: Passed CCIE written. I spent the remainder of November researching vendors for IE training and allocating materials to complete my at home lab. Thank you IPexpert and EBAY. I began the Audio and Video on demand series of the product in December and finished it in about 3 weeks. After that i began to go through the Volume 1 labs. My study time consisted of 2.5 - 3.5 hours each night, M-F and then 10 to 12 hrs a day on Saturday and Sunday. And YES this is the actual amount of time that i studied. I gave up TV, and fishingahhh i can go fishing again, for the entirety while i studied. I went on like this through Volume 1 labs and then i went onto the most recent 5 labs. I knew that these were the most recent so i started with the 5 labs and then went back to the Volume 2 labs. In the beginning rounds of the 5 labs and Volume 2 labs i would go through a lab from M-F and then again on Saturday and Sunday. This would allow me to do a full lab 3 times per week. By the time Sunday finished i would have a pretty good understanding of the topics that i had completed in that lab that week. However, in the beginning months I still couldn't finish the labs in 8 hours even on the Sunday attempts. I would also like to state that I would go through the Video on demand lab explanation and the written versions from the very beginning of the week. I saved a lot of time by giving into the fact, that i was no where near an expert and it was time for me to learn not test. Thus i used all the assets that i could to make

I've split it into two pieces, the first (below) talks about my study experience and how it changed over time. The second (to follow in a minute) talks about the approach I used in the lab , which may or may not be insane but worked for me. Many many thanks to everyone for their help and advice over the last many months. Regards Kevin CCIE #36651 How I Studied It took me three attempts to pass the CCIE, and after each of my failed attempts I made a number of adjustments to my approach. This was all personal study, I did not take any classes, but I did get some great support from my employer paying for materials, rack rentals, exam fees, allowing me some study leave and being very encouraging and supportive throughout. Attempt One (March) For attempt one I used the Cisco 360 materials. Of these the lab workbooks were very good and the online racks were the best I’ve seen in terms of setup (mainly because they’re the only ones I’ve seen with a remote phone control solution that actually works even remotely well). The other materials, a ‘library’ which seemed to consist of docs mostly available for free elsewhere and some videos which were ‘presented’ by a synthesized voice, were very poor. However there were only racks available for the last 10 of the 25 labs (the first 15 being technology labs like IPexpert WB 1) and it didn’t seem possible to purchase additional rentals. There were also 5 assessed labs – I really liked the idea of these and they did help, although they were graded by a script that sometimes went wrong. In fairness their support was good and they did give me extra sessions when things went wrong. My biggest criticism of the 360 stuff only came after my first attempt. I arrived in the exam room to find the exam looked nothing like the 360 labs. So where the 360 stuff had tables the exam had prose. The technology demands of the lab were very different from that of the 360 labs and there were quite a few things missing. Having been practicing with one set of workbooks I’d also become accustomed to a particular naming standard and IP schema as was surprised how much this threw me. I also suffered from the unfamiliar US keyboard layout and spent a considerable period of time correcting typing errors. Needless to say I ran out of time and failed. I took time at the end of the exam, having realized I failed, to reread the paper, and took good notes after leaving the room to ensure I would learn all the things that threw me. Attempt Two (June) After attempt one I purchased the IPExpert WB2 and 5-lab workbook and worked through them. I was struck by how much closer to the real thing they were, especially the 5 lab book. I also purchased two US keyboards (one for work one for home). I didn’t get on with the Proctorlabs remote phone control, so bought an 877 router, an old switch and a few phones (7960) – I also managed to borrow 4 7965 phones. I found this worked well for me and kept this hardware setup frpom this point in. I also collected together a list of things that I felt I needed to know from memory, such as various URLs, page numbers in the SRNDs etc. and committed these to memory. I went through two workbooks just once – although I read and took notes on each scenario a couple of times to practice understanding and interpreting the questions. In the end I was completing the 5-lab scenarios in a little over 6 hours. I felt confident, I’d have perhaps liked a little longer to prepare but had booked a date months in advance to make sure I committed. This attempt went much better, and I felt I knew the technology much better. However I still ran out of time and did not finish the exam. I was left with the distinct impression that whilst the 5-lab workbook is a good reflection of the exam the scenarios are much shorter than the real thing . Attempt Three (September) This time I decided that I knew the technology sufficiently well, and that the main problem was speed. I decided to practice only the 5 lab workbooks, but went through and added several questions to each. These were a mix of questions from WB2 and questions based on my memories of my two failed attempts (no excuse for getting the same thing wrong twice!). I adopted several strategies to improve my speed, including * · Used an online typing tutor (http://www.sense-lang.org/) to improve my typing speed and familiarity with US keyboard * · Added to my list of ‘things to memorise’ and loaded these into a flashcard program (Anki http://ankisrs.net/) which I also loaded onto my

congratulatins and thank you for the posts and explanations that you gave to the voice community 2011/6/29 George Goglidze gogli...@gmail.com Hi all, As the subject suggests, it's official, I'm dual CCIE #19926 RS and Voice starting yesterday. Finally, it's a relief, no more studying late, spending weekends on a computer, making calls, my neighbours think I escaped a psychiatric, after hearing voices at night TEST VOICEMAIL FOR HQ PHONE 1 and my personal favourite YOUR POSITION IN QUEUE IS :) I would like to transmit a very special thank you to IPExpert, and especially Vik Malhi. He's definitely made difference for me as a trainer. Just when you think you know it all about something, he would come up with something to prove me wrong, to show me the gaps in my knowledge I didn't know existed. Thank you Vik! Thanks to everyone on this forum too, there are many good people on the forum, with big knowledge, and more importantly willing to share it. It was big fun, I enjoyed the process a lot. By the way, I made it technically on my first attempt. Well, I payed once only, although I went to exam 3 times. 1st time, technical problems, Cisco gave me free retake voucher, 2nd time, again technical problems, again free voucher. To be honest after so many free retakes, I'm not even sure if I really passed, or I was costing them too much so they decided to give it to me :-), good samaritans these cisco guys. Wish you all good luck, and don't get frustrated, and most importantly have fun. Can you answer this without violating the NDA since a HW failure isn't probably test material? What kind of HW failure has to happen for them to give you a free retake?Do they let you finish that attempt and say use the voucher if you fail or was your attempt halted immediately? How far into the exam were you when it occurred? After two events like that I'd start to get really frustrated - did you go back immediately or take long breaks? If there are travel costs involved I'd start to get really upset with Cisco and I'd want to almost stay in town and take it the next day if there were spots open. Re: [OSL | CCIE_Voice] Passed
Thanks a lot guys, Jeff, I'm not sure how much I can say regarding this, but it wasn't a hardware failure, and I sat the whole exam, and got the free voucher only after opening a ticket through certsupport community. I don't know if I can say exactly what the problem was, so you have to excuse me for not telling it. Roger, bacon sundae forever man, we have to repeat that one day :-) Mini Me: I didn't have any special method, just few things, I saved a lot time by first writing down in notepad the call routing plan, something like this: hq (sub=yes or no, nat=yes or no, int=yes or no) 1,011 = yes or no, 911 - unk/unk or whatever else is asked. number gw name ani type/plan dnis type/plan to local 9[2-9]hq yes Xd ?/? Xd ?/? Xd br1 yes Xd ?/? Xd ?/?Xd - nat 91 and like this for every site. This way you don't have to reread the question million times, just once, and you have it all. The rest of my strategy was I guess the usual, get QoS after infrastructure, bring up and upgrade license of CUE after infrastructure too. Did UCCX last, because it's the slowest task, you need longer time to finish this. The rest of things, step by step. I hope this helps someone, Regards, On Wed, Jun 29, 2011 at 9:29 PM, Jeff Garvas j...@cia.net wrote: On Wed, Jun 29, 2011 at 9:44 AM, George Goglidze gogli...@gmail.comwrote: By the way, I made it technically on my first attempt. Thanks, at times it was slow that i thought my UCCX script wasn't working or codec issue coz it terminated before i could hear a short prompt that i had. After being satisfied that i had perfect configuration changed to something long then realized its because of the remote rack speeds. Also had instances where i just sat there for intermittent priceless 15 seconds waiting for response! I changed strategy to think about what i'm going to configure next so when it was moving again i could cruise.
