RE: Why won't this work?

2000-06-27 Thread Chris Farrugia

Well everyone, I'll pass along the apology that Intermedia.net gave me.
They were doing "some changes" to their servers and it made ColdFusion
somehow act screwy for about an hour and a half. But now everything is back
in order... so thank you for chasing a problem around in the dark like I did
:)

Sincerely,
Chris Farrugia

WDDX/XML recordsets

2000-06-27 Thread Denny Sheridan

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

--=_NextPart_000__01BFE092.6C487C40
Content-Type: text/plain;
charset="Windows-1252"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

Greetings all,

Here's a good one.
I'm getting an XML file ( WDDX formatted ) sent to the webserver from a
VB/web app. The VB programmer has defined multiple recordsets within the XML
file
and I would like to be able to read or detect each recordset definition as I
am declaring and setting CF variables with the data.
Some recordsets have duplicate field names...that is the problem. In the
XML, each field name is defined as a child to the unique recordset, which is
cool but after I de-serialize it (WDDX), I need a way to separate each
different recordset.

Here is a simple example:
( this code won't run, I know that)

---XML file before de-serializing

--- well there are two fname fields, it blows up.

Any ideas?

Hi,

If you're using CF 4.5.1. it's pretty easy. Just nest the following
CFMAILPARAM tag in your CFMAIL tags:

This should work if the recipient is reading your mail through outlook. I'm
not sure about other mail clients.

CFID & CFTOKEN come through my cookie filter(Cookie Pal) as cookies.
Yes - as I wrote; I moused down to the buy button and got to the next page
with no problem. There was no content there - just .

Refusing CFID & CFTOKEN is the (again) the oly difference I can see between
what I get and what others report.

Just repeated everything and now I get to the page with content.
It just reports the cftoken/cfif passed as URL.var amid the blue graphics/etc.

OT: JavaScript Tree

2000-06-27 Thread Bill Killillay

Hey, I found this on Allaire's web site and I have been poking around in CF
Studio and I can't seem to find it.

"Note: HomeSite and ColdFusion Studio users can add the JavaScript Tree to
one of their toolbars -- the tree provides a dropdown view of the built-in
object hierarchy with object properties and methods, and allows you to
insert a property or method into your code:"

Does anybody know where this is and how to use it. I remember seeing it and
using it in 4.0 but not since I upgraded to 4.5.1.

TIA!

You might want to check for some type of endless loop, or a query that's
taking longer than the timeout period. I've had something similar happen to
me when getting nested s in the wrong order.

Executing a String?

2000-06-27 Thread Doug Nottage

How can I assemble an CFML command inside a string and execute it?

For example, If I had the following CFML code, what would be the next line
to actually cause the variable "somevalue" to be created and assigned a
value of 3?

I have a table with two columns called "variableName" and "variableValue".
I'd like to loop through the set and make sure all the variables get their
assigned values.

I could have sworn I made this happen before, but I just can't seem to
remember how. I've tried the #evaluate()# function, but you can't do
something like because the left side of an equation can't be a
function, according to the CF rules.

Any ideas???

After mousing down to the 'buy now' button, I got to the linked page

RE: testing for existence of table

Use CFCATCH, and catch any database error. If one comes up you know you need to drop
the table and recreate it. (using a conditional statement, of course)

| Many thanks to Nick Slay and Orlando Correa for their
suggestions.
| I found out that the reason I was getting the Error 22005
message when
| calling a SQL Server stored procedure
| from ColdFusion, was because of the following two reasons:
|
| (1) It appears that you cannot specify a default null in the
stored
| procedure T-SQL. So instead of
|
| CREATE PROCEDURE sp_UpdateCDROM ( @CDROMID int, @Title
varchar(64),
| @FullTitle varchar(128) = null, @Supplier varchar(64) = null,
@DiskNo
| smallint = null, @CDKey varchar(64) = null, .
|
| You should have
|
| CREATE PROCEDURE sp_UpdateCDROM ( @CDROMID int, @Title
varchar(64),
| @FullTitle varchar(128), @Supplier varchar(64), @DiskNo
smallint, @CDKey
| varchar(64), .
|
| However, this does mean that you can't have default parameters
in this case.
|
| (2) For varchar parameters you need to use th MAXLENGTH
property of the
| CFPROCPARAM tag; eg:
|
|
|

RE: Selecting a value in a dropdown.

Erika,

You don't preselect it. You just make the record in the database the first item of
the select list.

Use the following code:

#parked# week/year

#i# week/year

Why won't this work?

2000-06-27 Thread Chris Farrugia

I have a link, it should work, but when you click the link, it just sits
there and never does anything. To see this problem, go to
www.bluewaterpc.com and then click SOHO Bundle on the left, and then the
button for Calculate Price, and then you'll see the problematic button "Buy
Now." It is just sitting there... I really can not figure out this problem
for the life of me. Thanks in advance for the help.

RE: CF and Progress Database ODBC drivers

2000-06-27 Thread Mark Warrick

So long as you can connect to the database via standard ODBC, you should be able to
set it up as a datasource.

If the pro version of CF 451 can't do it, then possibly the Enterprise edition would.
Or you might have to get a 3rd party driver. A 3rd party driver might work, but
Allaire's not going to give you any technical support for that.

Anyway, try setting up a datasource first via the control panel and see what happens.

Cold Fusion error code 1, FTP error code 3

2000-06-27 Thread KungFusion

I had to revert back to CF 4.0.1 from 4.5.1 due to some CFServer locking up
issues.
I have some scheduled scripts that upload text files and then some image
files.
The cftp script works fine but when the image script runs it gives me:

Error Message
--
An error occurred while processing CFFTP tag (Cold Fusion error code 1, FTP
error code 3): Cannot put local file f:/homelist/htdocs/pictures/ok/838.jpg
to remote file /bryancounty/838.jpg: The system cannot find the path
specified.

The same exact CFFTP code works for the text files but not the image files,
strange huh? I have the transfer mode set to binary for images..

hiding a column name..?

2000-06-27 Thread miles

I have a real small question that you folks probably alrerady know
the answer to.

How would I "hide" the column names in a drill down link ?

Lets assume the following:

link

in other web-enabling languages Ive seen this done where you
can hide the column name by replacing it with a dummy that passes
to the next page which gets processed as a form value that you
perform a query on against the db.

link

On the next page the HIDEME would become

SELECT *
FROM the_database
WHERE "form.hideme" = #column_name#

When I try the above with CF it tells me that "column_name"
doesn't exist.

What am I doing wrong ?

Try using #paragraphformat(htmleditformat(your_content_here))#. Works for me.

There is no checking for the existence of CGI variables in CF . . . anything

Progress Database

2000-06-27 Thread Phil Labonte

Hello All,

I have an IIS box running CF451 and I want to be able to connect to a
progress database which runs my companies financial applications. It runs on
HP-UX.

Anyway, there is no native CF support for progress as far as I can tell, but
can someone pouint me the way to some instructions on how to connect? I know
I need to install an ODBC driver on the IIS server, but does CF detect it
and automagically add it to the list of drivers in CF Server??

The Progress DBA is stoked to get this working so any help is greatly
appreciated:

Phil

Re: CF and Progress Database ODBC drivers

2000-06-27 Thread Stephen Garrett

I ran into this sort of issue with Sybase. We needed to create a ODBC
datasource with the SYBASE tools and connectivity options. I think
we actually tested with M$'s ODBC test tool.

So, I would check to see what Progress offers in the way of ODBC
connections. Assuming they do, create an ODBC source with those tools,
refer to it via CF, and away you go.

Re: Textarea formatting question

I just did that last week. I was temporarily putting the #textbody#
variable in tag, but this string works better for what I was doing

#ReplaceNoCase("#textbody#", Chr(13), "", "ALL")#

but I still haven't figured out how to filter out any unwanted tags that
could easily cause damage - just haven't got to it yet. Like if some guy
puts , , or even to turn my cfserver into a
spam gateway or something. I'm sure there's a simple function for it, but
if anyone knows of a good method for allowing only certain tags to display,
I would appreciate any pointers.

Re: Server times + international site

2000-06-27 Thread Nick Slay

Yup, I've done the very same thing Each member has a timezone id, and
I use that to store ALL dates as GMT, and then calculate the local time
when the records are retrieved.

I wouldn't set the clock to GMT, as it may cause you problems if you want
to mirror the site etc etc. Leaving it as local time is perfectly ok, as
long as you have all the correct timezone offsets etc.

A couple of tips remember to include DST too if necessary!!! and
store all offsets in seconds, it's far easier to work with!

testing for existence of table

2000-06-27 Thread S.E.Fling

Hi all,

I have a temporary table that needs to be deleted after processing has completed. But,
if the user bails and doesn't complete the transaction, the temporary table doesn't
get deleted,
which causes an error message when CF attempts to create the table later on. So I put
in some code to delete the table before it's created, but if it doesn't exist, I get
an error
message. I tried to test for the existence of the table, but I guess this isn't the
way to do it:

   DROP TABLE temp

Please help! TIA for any clues, tips, or answers.

Look closer at the code:
will return FALSE if the string has a

will return TRUE if the string has a

To compare these two statements you need to drop the "NOT" operator from the
first one :)

It will work and does work quite nicely.

Um, nothing in the CFXAPI as I recall can do that.

If you're wanting to something you can cfloop through you CAN create queries
with different names. For instance, with CFX_UserManager it's set up so you
can tell the name of the query through the QUERY="?" parameter.

Ie, you call for a list of NT users with QUERY="Users". Then you can cfloop
through the Users query and call for their localqroups putting them in
QUERY="Localgroups". And then do a nested cfloop through the Localgroups
query. (Printing out their usernames, then a list of the localgroups they're
apart of.)

I believe that's about it. The CFXAPI allows for only one query to be
returned per CFX call. Far as I know. So

localqroups putting them in
QUERY=3D"Localgroups". And then do a =

I believe that's about it. The CFXAPI allows for only =
one query to be
returned per CFX call. Far as I know. So

RE: automate tif to gif conversion CFX tag?

2000-06-27 Thread McDonald, David

The CPU power vs file space is noted, thanks...we ahev much more space than
power. The actual sat photos will have to stay in tiff format for their
georeferencing and pixel (ie spectral) values, which are very important
characteristics. But the thumbnails (100x100 px) can be in crayon for all I
care, as long as they show up in NS4.x and IE4.x. The thumbs are simply
meant to be a guideline for the users so they can assess cloud cover,
locale, etc. The real info is in the tif, which the user may download if
they choose.

I will try the imagemagik as someone else mentioned for its usefulness.
With the archived images I can create thumbs and store them on the file
system, that's not too bad, but I really wanted the on-the-fly capability to
generate 100x100 px thumbs for the 4+ tif images we receive daily so someone
does not have to manually create them each time.

-Dave

-

TIFF supports every compression format known to man :) including LZW so you
might want to check that.

If they're actual sat photographs (not computer generated or
colour-enhanced) they're idea candidates for JPEG compression. And JPEG is
the highest compression format that browsers currently support (smallest
file size).

I'd strongly suggest saving the thumbs to the server as on-the-fly image
compression isn't trival as far as CPU power needed. It's a question of a
lot of CPU power or a lot of file space.

The way I understand it from the docs, you want to use the SCOPE for application,

Textarea formatting question

Hi - A quick question - I'm using a few textarea blocks in my form for
users to submit large chunks of data to a memo field in an access

tabs, carriage returns, etc. - how do I retain formatting so that when
the user views their information on file (just querying and displaying
in a CFOUTPUT) it's the same as it was when entered?

Re: New to databases

2000-06-27 Thread Carol Chandler

It is my understanding of Oracle licensing that if a database is accessible to the
public, you cannot use "named user" licensing, but must "license the box" - a fee per
power unit, which is based on megahertz. I'm not certain how this applies to Personal
Oracle, though. If you want to make sure that what you're doing is legal, better
check with an Oracle Sales Rep.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 06/23/00 04:02AM >>>
When an application uses a Oracle database, all connections is made under
the user specified in CF server, right? Then, even there are 100 concurent
connections, an Oracle personal with 1 user can handle all the transactions,
or I need 100 licences?

Re: Selecting a value in a dropdown.

2000-06-27 Thread Erika Foster

Mark,

I'm not sure I understand.

This form is serving as an edit or insert action, so I'd like to have this
field pre-selected with the value of that field that is in the DB for that
record. I also still want the 52-week dropdown option in case the user
needs to edit the information for that record.

I used the #iif()# option and it worked nicely. But if you know of a
way thats even simpler, I'm all ears (eyes).

You can cut it down even more by skipping the 52-week nested CFIF loop and
outputting the data as the first item on the option list.

CF and Progress Database ODBC drivers

2000-06-27 Thread Cold Fusion

I have an IIS box running CF451 and I want to be able to connect to a

RE: NULL using it in CF

Good question. :)

There are traditionally two ways of handling strings. C, etc uses NULL
terminated strings. Basic uses a pre-pended count integer. For the most part
null-terminated strings are much, much easier and faster to manipulate.
There are few cases, like with len functions and concats where basic strings
win out though.

Also, a lot of the microsofties used VB to write parts of the microsoft
code. So it infected COM, etc.

No idea how alliare implemented things on *nix though.

> rules as the new Java architecture is rolled out ...

Well, java strings are higher level objects... private arrays...
functionality it's about the same in that it should be internally keeping
what's essentially a length variable for the string. So, no real change.
That's a guess.

So

This is probably going to be repeated by 1000 other people, but here goes:

The textarea field is a little different than other input fields in that its
a paired tag, rather than a single tag. It doesn's support the VALUE

Gregg,

The textarea tag does not have a "value" attribute (unlike the input
type=text which does). Therefore you should say:

  #body#

instead.

The Textarea value goes *between* the textarea tags, not in a
Value parameter like other input field tags. Try this:

with that would you also then agree that whenever you use ANY variable, no

Does anybody have any thoughts on weather you should always do an
isDefined() before reading or writing a session/application variable? Why?

thanks,

That is one of those golden rules of programming.
You cannot perform an operation on something that is not existant.
Therefore, you must ensure that your variable exists before you can use
it. Much like initalizing your variable you must also always be sure it
exists
given the nature of ColdFusion :)

Textarea doesnot have a value attribute. Use the following:

#body#

It is also useful to apply the trim() function to the body variable, to
prevent any addition whitespace.

CF_Image & AutoResize CF Tag

2000-06-27 Thread Reilly, Jim

I was working with AutoResize CF tag.

After viewing the AutoResize.cfm file I seen these cmds:

and

I was wondering if anyone could explain the action and commands strings
in both. More specifically, the resize & resizeif, as well as
the 3 attributes after resize, like the -1. What do they mean?

Basically, is there any documentation on this CFX_Image tag?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Tkx,
Jim

Your problem is not ColdFusion-related, it's HTML syntax that you need to learn more
about. Check any online manual regarding HTML specs - there's tons of them available.

What matters is the output algorithm. JPG is probably going to be slow
and also may not be a very good match for thumbnails. GIF without LZW is
definiately NOT going to be small, but may be fast. PNG and several other
formats may not be viewable in-line in the HTML.

There's an application called ImageMagick which seems to be pretty popular
with those doing image conversion. Take a look at http://www.ImageMagick.org/
for more details.

I don't know that anyone has written a CFX for Imagemagick, but you can
probably use it as a CGI or do a system call to it to do your on the fly
conversions.

PNG works in MSIE, but it may or may not work in Communicator 4.x. Depending
on the phase of the moon apparently. Mozilla supports it fully fortunately.

I get the impression there unisys was generally hassling people who used
run-time compression in GIF's. So, probably not a good idea for that reason.

RE: Selecting one number from a list

2000-06-27 Thread Gary McNeel, Jr.

I completely agree with Dave. I am currently in the process of redesigning
several important databases that were incorrectly designed in the beginning.
Then tons (tonnes?) of CF code was written to handle the resulting problems
as the database grew. The original designers backed themselves into a
corner. Reporting is a major hassle. Duplicate data is everywhere. They
wrote all kinds of CF stuff to check for duplicates, etc. (which often don't
work correctly). Development time escalated.

At first I was going to look at just fixing the system. After looking at the
CF code and databases I decided to just through it out and start from
scratch. It is the story of "Well, it just started as a simple little ...".

Please, for the love of God Mr. Burns (from one of my favorite Simpson's
episodes), take time to read a good book on RELATIONAL database design.
Keyword RELATIONAL. You will do yourself AND anyone who follows behind you a
really, really huge favor.

Re: isDefined() on session/application variables

2000-06-27 Thread Sharon DiOrio

I use an "isDefined()" before reading/writing session/application variables
and then if the variable isn't defined, I set it. Mostly this is for error
trapping in the unlikely event that the variable isn't defined and you call
it (producing an error). If you're 100% sure the variable is there, than
you don't need to check for it. But I'm not 100% of anything...

Embed a CFIF statement inside the loop that determines whether or not the
database value matches the value. Then, if it does match, include
the SELECTED parameter inside the option tag.

#i#
week/year

#i# week/year

Keep in mind that this will only work if there is only one possible match
between the database values and your index (i).
