Destroying a Query [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread Jim McAtee

Can I release a query that has been created within a template and is no
longer needed? (CF 4.0.1) A couple of other questions: Are queries in
the variables scope or do they have their own scope? If I can release,
delete, undefine, redefine, or otherwise get rid of the query, does CF
actually release the memory allocated to the query during template
execution. If not, it kills one of the reasons I'd have for releasing
the query.

Associative Array Indexing [CF-Talk]

Are the following ways of addressing an associate array key equivalent?
The numeric values are what I'm unsure of. Does CF simply convert them
to strings for use as the key?

Thanks.

Just reinstalling my own cf4.0.1 worked pretty well too. :)

Urg. If I just had enough money that I could just take off for a half year

Re: [CF-Talk] Random Images-Resources for Information?

2000-09-20 Thread Jim McAtee

Depends what you're thinking when you say random. If you mean calling
the function 7 times always pulls up 7 different numbers, then that is
NOT a random sequence. By chance (err... 'randomness') you could
conceivably pull up the same number 7 times in a row (or a hundred times
in a row). You'd sit there and say "This isn't random", but it's just a
'streak' of good/bad/neither luck that this strange sequence ocurred.

One other thing, mostly unrelated to the above. The way computers
usually generate random numbers is by pulling numbers out of a large,
stored table (containing, you guessed it, random numbers). You should
always seed the random number generator before you use it the first
time, so that the sequence doesn't always start in the same place within
the table. If you don't do this, you may notice the same sequence of
numbers every time the program runs.

Jim

RE: [CF-Talk] RE: Ben Forta, I call on thee (was: What is Fusebox )

2000-09-20 Thread Reynolds, Adam

I don't believe Fusebox to be the methodology to use for all application
development. What I have found though, is that Fusebox is good within large
teams (where you may be using contractors) where long-term maintenance of
code is required when you may not be able to refer back to a developer. It
provides a 'standard' which is sometimes more important in the long-term
than how quick you do something.

I also come from a programming background and find that Fusebox sits well
with the 'way' I think in terms of programming (grew up on Ada/C). Fusebox
makes you think in small steps. When it comes to testing this can only be a
good thing.

I also find that implementing security models is easier. Actually
implementing anything application wide is easy.

I must admit I am still developing my logic behind headers and footers, but
I am currently moving to the use of a variable called page_mode that
indicates DEFAULT/RightFrame/LeftFrame/TopFrame/Blank with an appropriate
case statement for each.

Re: [CF-Talk] RE: Ben Forta, I call on thee (was: What is Fusebox)

2000-09-20 Thread Sean Renet

Dick it wasn't meant to be elitist, it was a real question. I think
everyone agrees that good coding practices are essential. However everyone
that has come up with a reason not to use fusebox (including you) have only
delivered what appears to be ignorance of its present implementation. I have
not read Dave's monolithic response yet, and will do that next.

However,

...rather than distributing duplicate code among dsp, act and err
templates...

You know the whole point of fusebox is to reuse code right? If you are
duplicating code, you are not implementing fusebox correctly.

The tradeoff is one somewhat larger module vs several smaller modules
requiring synchronized, concurrent changes

What synchronized changes are you referring to, that would not have to be
made in your monolithic template? This is like the guy that said he didn't
use fusebox because it called index.cfm too many times. You would only call
index.cfm as many times as you would individual templates.

I really think you need to take a look at the fusedocs again. My cybercash
logic is slim and written in fusebox. Wherein none of my clients are
Amazon.com, none of them are Betty's Boutique either and I have never had
anyone call me and say "Our shopping cart doesn't work and its all because
its written in fusebox". Matter of fact I haven't ever had anyone tell me
that the cart doesn't work period. Most of these applications have multiple
fulfillment houses and handle cross fulfillment for back orders et al. You
cannot charge the credit card until the product ships, so you have to hit
your merchant processing company twice (once for the approval/hold and once
to bill when the product ships). Why write that code twice? What you are
suggesting means that you do. You write it once in your monolithic display
page and once in your backend charge process. I just include the action
page twice. Once the logic is written (or called as a servlet) on a
template, fusebox allows you to just "plug it in". If yours turned out
ugly, do we think it is because you were not properly using the methodology?
So far it seems it could be the case. If you are really having problems with
cybercash, use paymentnet instead, those guys are never down.

I can arguably build a better widget using pure JAVA or Broadvision (I have
yet to walk down the weblogic road extensively), and there are things I like
about ASP, but I choose CF/EJB because among other things its light weight,
affordable and allows rapid development. The cases you all are making for
not using fusebox are not disimilar to the arguments against using CF. Some
ASP developer might say "You can't do this in CF" and my response would be
"Yes, you can do that in CF, you however are not used to doing it in CF so
to you it looks like you cannot". You are saying "I don't use fusebox
because you can't do this", and I am saying "Yes you can". It is simply a
framework methodology.

I only do contract work and have had to program using everything from
Viant's methods to fusebox. I have had a great deal of experience revamping
other developers' code and I have found it no easier than when the code is
written in fusebox. For me it works. If it doesn't work for you, great.
Well written logical code is well written logical code, it has nothing to do
with the framework you wrap it in. So to make erroneous statements that
some logic cannot be implemented or would suffer using fusebox is
fallacious. Anything you can do in any methodology can be implemented in
another. I have yet to find any business logic that suffered because it was
written in fusebox. If you have a good framework methodology, use it. I
use fusebox because it allows me to pump out applications fast, subcontract
work and spend most of my time on the beach with my kids or returning
emails like this.

>It is not a panacea... I refuse to bastardize system design or
implementation to conform to *any* arbitrary >standar(d).

Fusebox is not an arbitrary standard and to call it such demeans the time
and effort Steve, Gabe, Hall, Nat et al have put into developing it. If you
don't like it, don't use it, but there are a whole bunch of people that are
trying very hard to develop something useful to this community. I am still
waiting for the example of this mythic system bastardization which has
escaped me in my development career.

Strange behavior in message body: no hard returns [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread Paul Sinclair

I'm using CF 4.5.1 Enterprise Edition. I have a form that sends out a reply
to the person submitting it using . It just spits out the contents
of the form so the person has confirmation of what was submitted.

The cfmail goes out okay, but for some reason it is ignoring hard returns in
the block of the message where I am regurgitating the form's contents. Here
is the code.

When the email is sent out, it puts the proper hard returns in the part that
is above " Your form was as follows -" but the part after it goes
out as one long line. So it would be something like this in the email
message:

I enjoyed the seminar. Think it was great. I would make this suggestion.
blah, blah, blah. John Doe. Springfield, VA US - September 20, 2000

I can't figure out why it is doing this. If I put in after the lines,
it puts a line break in but the shows up (as expected) in the contents
of the email.

Any ideas what's causing this?

Re: [CF-Talk] OT: Subject lines

I agree that the [CF-Talk] is annoying, useless in terms of content, and
I really wish it were gone.

I find it much easier to filter based on the address to which people
are sending the mail. That way when someone emails me a private message in
reply to something I sent to the mailing list, it doesn't disappear into
the backlog of mailing list msgs that I have to get through.

I meant the ongoing documentation and implementation, not a fusebox app. A
fusebox app from last year would have those display header and footer
templates I disdain and a bunch of other stuff that has been improved
technique-wise.

Actually, its n-tier capabilities is one reason I use it. You are basically
just plugging applications and their subapplications into each other.

No, you would still have to look at your frameset and then look at the pages
it calls so where is the abstraction?. The benefit is that the fusebox way
you write 3 lines of code in app_globals or application.cfm to lock all of
the templates down and you can dynamically change the frame by just changing
the fuseaction. As well, at a glance I could figure out what goes in those
frames and when.

There's

Unfortunately the techniques on the fusebox site are not completely up to
date, but the docs do explain the frame work. I am pretty sure Steve, Gabe,
Hale, Nat et al are pretty busy with their real jobs and its probably hard
for them to take a month or two off and update the site. Most of this
information flows pretty redundantly on the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list
and Hal writes about it in CFDJ. However I don't find myself to be an
extraordinary super programmer, and I figured most of it out after reading
the fusebox docs and combing them with the CF DOCS.

all).

I initially researched CF 3.0. Decided there wasn't anything there that I
couldn't do in the languages I was using. When 4.0 came out last year, I
changed my mind and now use Coldfusion primarily. I think all recurring
methods or languages are worth investigation, but then I have that kind of
time on my hands.

I agree that if fusebox doesn't work for your application, use what does.
However I have yet to find a application that I could not or did not want to
code using its methods.

CFEXECUTE [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread seth ward

I am trying to PGP-sign a text file so that I can use the signed file in
an email. I am accessing PGP 6.5.8 through command line with CFEXECUTE:

This does not work - when the PGP software requests the passphrase, it
appears that Coldfusion thinks the process is over and ends the
processing, without passing the passphrase to the command-line.

Therefore I get the following error:

A secret key is required to make a signature. Signature error

For a usage summary, type: pgp -h
For more detailed help, consult the PGP User's Guide.

Is there any way to get CF to deliver the passphrase at the right time,
or should I be going about this a completely different way?

Re: CFEXECUTE [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread JustinMacCarthy

Any reason you don't use cfx_pgp tag?

I forgot to ask what version of CF it is , the cfexecute tag behavior is a
little strange, I think, but some of that has been fixed with the new
service pack and a the upgrades (according you the release notes)

You chould try using min's cfx_commandconsole
@ intrafoundation.com , I found it better then cfexecute in cf v4.5

Otherwise you could write you own in Java or c++ to avoid the command
line..

Hope that helps , tell us how you get on..

RE: [CF-Talk] CFCOOKIE problems SOLVED

2000-09-20 Thread Gina Shillitani

Thanks to everyone for your help - I didn't see the post on the CF_LOCATION
tag until I already devised a workaround, but I will definitely keep that in
mind for future reference. I'm doing E-SUC (Editing Someone else's
Undocumented Code), and its in a pseudo-fusebox style (unfortunately without
the clarity of the *actual* fusebox style) - so there are a LOT of
 hanging around.

There are a couple of tags in the Gallery , that set up ODBC , hack them to
find the reg keys your need

Write a tag to
output those to wddx and then reverse the process on the other machine..

When you have all that done give us the tags ;-> They would be handy .

Actual putting them at the end serves no purpose. I would rather not have
them at all instead of having them at the end. At the fron they are
beneficial becuase they are all near the same place. At the end I have to

This was an experiment based on many emails that I've received asking for

morning I'll switch over to having it at the end and see how that works.
This should satisfy everyone. As usual, comments are appreciated. :)

RE: [CF-Talk] Production Server Policies

2000-09-20 Thread Reynolds, Adam

At the UK CFUG meeting last night, Ben Forta did a good presentation on
optimising code.

His presentation is available (minus two pages) on www.forta.com

One that comes to mind is to turn trusted cache on on your production server
(and increase server cache to 3 to 4 times your total size of templates) .
Once the server loads a template it will not load it off the hard disk
again. (Keeps your production server stable and stopsd random hacking of
production environments by your staff). Also turn on enforce strict
attribute validation (on both development and production). Although this
should be turned on on your development/test server first as this one can
make bad code go boom.

These bascially increase server speed, but also deliver benefits to your
development environments.

how do i do an arranged 3 part query [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread Cedric Wooding

I need to search surname, firstname, company name, in that order from a
database and then display the results, with no duplicates. The database is
small at the moment, so i can do three queries and then list the results in
order. i.e. query 1 results, then query two results. So how do I do this
efficiently, pref. using only one query.

Also you need to do is goto to Regedit and export the Datasources Key.

Import it into your new install.

You will also need to copy over your odbc.ini.

I did this to move from one server to another, it worked very well.

RE: CFEXECUTE [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread seth ward

I'm not using the CFX_PGP tag because I can't get the thing working!

I get errors every time - CFX_PGP: error in
getKey->getFirstKey->PGPKeyIterMove : end of iteration

I can't get any support from their forums, nor from anyone else it
seems!

If you know what this error message means, I would really appreciate any
help.

Out of sheer frustration I am attempting to use my head and think of
other ways to achieve signed emails - hence the command-line use of PGP.

In the meantime I'll try the command console (no J or C knowledge), if
you have and further advice on CFX_PGP that would be great.

Cheers.

Any reason you don't use cfx_pgp tag?

I forgot to ask what version of CF it is , the cfexecute tag behavior is
a
little strange, I think, but some of that has been fixed with the new
service pack and a the upgrades (according you the release notes)

You chould try using min's cfx_commandconsole
@ intrafoundation.com , I found it better then cfexecute in cf v4.5

Otherwise you could write you own in Java or c++ to avoid the command
line..

Hope that helps , tell us how you get on..

Current Row in SQL as opposed to CF? [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread PC

IS there a way to do get the current row as part of a select statement in a
similar fashion as the coldfusion #queryname.currentrow# property functions
in a CFOUTPUT context?

What I need are results that look like:

Category 1 Sports
Category 2 Languages
Category 3 Reference
Category 4 Politics

from a query looking something like:

SELECT TOP 4 Category + ?currentrow? + Category_title

So what property exists, or technique for generating the ?currentrow? part
of the statement above

Now, I cannot use the indentity field .. I don't want values like
Category 2 ...
Category 19 ...

And ... I cannot use a CFOUTPUT or CFLOOP -- I want to do it all in the SQL
statement if possible!!

Using CFFILE to search [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread W Luke

Hi,

I've been given a nasty job to do, that of reading through 500 files to find
similarities. Now I could do this manually, but I'm too lazy and don't have
time either! I've only used CFFILE to append, write and output entire
contents of files - now I need to read through each file (which is of the
same format..zone files - this is Bind again guys), find out what IP address
it's sat on, so that I can see which can have the same zone files etc.

So for those not familiar with Bind I need to read through each file, find
something at a given point (don't wanna output it all), and store it in a DB
for later.

Any ideas?

Cheers all

Will

Your CFMAIL tag isn't terminated with an ">" after the SUBJECT attribute.

RE: Using CFFILE to search [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread mherbene

I'm not sure this is a job for CF. How about importing the files as tables
into Access, then appending them all into one big table, with a new field
that tracks which rows come from which file, and then sorting them by IP or
what have you so that all the same IPs are together and you can idenfity the
files?

Subject: Using CFFILE to search [CF-Talk]

So for those not familiar with Bind I need to read through each file, find
something at a given point (don't wanna output it all), and store it in a DB
for later.

Any ideas?

Cheers all

Will

Then why not put them at the front. If you're gonna sort by subject like

That's one idea. 2 things; reason I want to do it in CF is because this i
spart of an existing project which is now becoming very large, in several
parts, done by several people - all in CF! So, it makes sense. Secondly,
the reason I doubt I could do the above is due to the way the file has been
edited - not very well. The IP address isn't necessarily on the same line
each time, and Access would get all confused.

Thanks anyway :(

*very* much doubt that - certainly not with Javascript AFAIK. Some evil

RE: Current Row in SQL as opposed to CF? [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread DeVoil, Nick

Not in standard SQL. This operation would be at odds with
the relational view of data, in which data is intrinsically
not ordered.

So if there is a way of doing it that would work in a single
CFQUERY, it's going to be be DBMS-specific. If you happen
to be using PostgreSQL you might be able to to create a
user-defined function in 'C' to do it, but that would be
crazy.

But if you can't use CFOUTPUT, why does it matter what the
results look like? What exactly are you trying to do?

Subject: Current Row in SQL as opposed to CF? [CF-Talk]

IS there a way to do get the current row as part of a select statement in a
similar fashion as the coldfusion #queryname.currentrow# property functions
in a CFOUTPUT context?

What I need are results that look like:

Category 1 Sports
Category 2 Languages
Category 3 Reference
Category 4 Politics

from a query looking something like:

SELECT TOP 4 Category + ?currentrow? + Category_title

So what property exists, or technique for generating the ?currentrow? part
of the statement above

Now, I cannot use the indentity field .. I don't want values like
Category 2 ...
Category 19 ...

And ... I cannot use a CFOUTPUT or CFLOOP -- I want to do it all in the SQL
statement if possible!!

Re: Current Row in SQL as opposed to CF? [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread David Shadovitz

The problem is that any row number associated with a row isn't going to
be in order. What you call row 1 may be stored in the database as row
1567. It only becomes row 1 because your SQL statement selects it as row
1. So you're forced to use properties of the result set, i.e.
#queryname.currentrow#.

Sometimes a header will identify the SMTP client program.

But I'm pretty sure there's no reliable way to determine the mail
client, even when it's sending directly to a CF machine as SMTP
server, ie, Howie's iMS. SMTP is just not setup to function like that.

RE: [CF-Talk] Random Images-Resources for Information?Use the randomize()
function to seed the rand number generator. Page 489 of the CF 4.5 language
reference manual.

randomize(timeformat(now(),"SSHHMM"));

Just to put an integer in as the seed value. The randomize() function
returns a number between 0 and 1 but it is not "random" according to the
docs.

There are similar functions in other languages (basic, c, etc.)

Re: Somewhat OT: Is it possible to detect a mail client from a web page [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread Howie Hamlin

Actually, you can determine the remote mail client fairly reliably with iMS.
iMS provides all the email headers and one of them looks something like:

User-Agent: Microsoft-Outlook-Express-Macintosh-Edition/5.02.2022

Sort of the same way you can get a browser type. There are still a few mail
clients that don't provide this but the more popular clients do...

2000-09-20 Thread Dennis Powers

The only reason I can think of is that the variable imageswap is
already set. If the value if the variable imageswap is already set
when the template is called it will not take a new value using the
tag. Check to see if you are passing imageswap to the
template in a form or url variable. is only used if the
variable does not exist.

Foxpro sources [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread Paul Davies

We are having problems writing to Foxpro dbc tables for numeric or integer
values with remote CF-based SQL queries. CF reports a data type mismatch.
We have tried many procedures, such as: retrieving integer data as a string,
converting to numeric with CF [NumberFormat(), Val(), or ParseNumber()]
incrementing while setting a new variable name [retrieval + 1 or
IncrementValue()], testing the result [IsNumeric()] for conditional display
(*always successful*), and then committing the results -- both with and
without various single or nested SQL functions appended to the query
[int(#variable#) or val(int(#variable#)) for integer and numeric fields
respectively, for instance].
No combination has thus far returned a single successful query write.
Anyone taken on Foxpro sources?

inFusion Mail Server which is a mail server that is controlled by
ColdFusion. It has several advantages over traditional CF Mail solutions
including:

No CFPOP Needed (mail received is immediately processed by your templates)
Can send up to 1024 mails at one time (CFMAIL can send only one at a time)
No need for an external mail server (iMS is a mail server)

Re: Current Row in SQL as opposed to CF? [CF-Talk]

I am using SQL Server 7.

I can use CFOUTPUT I suppose. What I need to do is set the results to a
variable and write that as part of a file.

I am a little unclear on how I would even use CFOUTPUT in this fashion --
can I somehow
set the output to a variable?

"Category" #currentrow# #Category_Title#

I need this in a variable that is part of a few variables concatenated and
written to a file using CFFILE write

Thanks for anymore insight... :)

Re: Current Row in SQL as opposed to CF? [CF-Talk]

Use CFLOOP instead of CFOUTPUT combined with your CFFILE operation. Keep in
mind that the currentrow variable will be determined as an incrementing
number from 1 to recordcount, and is only indicative of the physical order
in which the query was returned to CF based on your SQL statement.

So in cases like me, where I read mail via at least 4 different mail
clients (pretty much at the same time...), exactly which client is
coldfusion going to be able to detect?

Thanks!

But still no joy: the tag does not produce any output, so I cannot tell
whether the process has worked.

If I look for the file that should be outputted to, it does not exist so
I think I can safely say it doesn't work.

If I look hard, I can see the command-line popup and make out that it is
telling me that the timezone is not defined (this despite the fact that
it IS set, and I do not get this message if I use the command line
manually to do exactly the same command.

It seems I am destined to a life of manually signing all of our domain
requests...

You may need to execute this from a batch file which is setting the
environment variables. If your CF service is running in the "system"
context, it may not have a full environment to draw from.

Does Anyone understand encrypt/decrypt??? [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread Marcus

Greets,

I am attempting to encrypt a text file and store it in an SQL table.

First, I create a name, and then see if the file exists...
 (where answer3 is the
filename)

Then, read the file into a variable

Create a key

Then encrypt it

and then I store '#encrypted#' in a text field in an SQL7 table.
Not bad so far...

Now, when I try and view the file, I again set the key,

And retrieve the field from a query I ran

then I attempt to decrypt the file

And I get the error...

The value to be decrypted is no valid.

Any ideas

Marcus the Desperate

I actually did notice something similar to your problem when I was working
with 4.5.1. Randrange did seem to be fond of numbers one and two. I was
selecting three unique numbers between 1 and 6. Almost every time 1 was
picked. About three quarters of the time 2 was picked. A little over half
of the time for 3. The numbers were sorted after being selected, so we got
groups like:
1,2,3
1,2,5
1,2,6
1,3,4
1,2,3
1,3,6
1,2,5
2,4,6
1,3,5

I did some statistics on it at the time with 1-9 and it took like 19 tries
before I didn't get a 1, a 2, or a 3. I figured that the algorithm had been
changed and was a bit lacking. There wasn't anything I could do about it,
so I just let it go. It picked those other ones eventually.

RE: [CF-Talk] Random Images-Resources for Information?

2000-09-20 Thread Heath Lord

That is part of the issue with randrange.

It has demonstrated issues (ie, with numbers above 100,000,000 it actually
DEMONSTRATES NON-RANDOM behavior) with its functionality.

You should probably seed it with a Randomize to get really random effects...

RE: [CF-Talk] OT: Subject lines

2000-09-20 Thread Jennifer

It's not as easy to filter based on incoming email address. I am doing that
in at least two ways for each houseoffusion list that I'm on (one filter
for ct-talk and one for cftalk because that does happen) and I still get
messages that are unfiltered. Sometimes its because the person sending the
message has sent it to several people and put the cf-talk address somewhere
strange or made it undisclosed. Anything standard that can not be gotten
around is helpful. I can filter based on subject line contains [CF-TALK]
much more accurately than I can filter based on to or cc contains cf-talk
or to or cc contains cftalk.

Hi. I'm setting my shopping cart up for a guy in Australia. I can go

By filtering on subject line you can't distinguish list traffic from non-list
traffic. By filtering to:/cc:/etc it is trivial to make that distinction work
properly.

It may not occur often, but the fact that a subject line that comprises
[cf-talk] will always go to your list folder when, in fact, it may be
communication that belongs (or was intended to be) off-list.

People do send private exchanges in re cf-talk articles without changing
the subject lines - forwarding, you know?

Common Login [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread Curt Makepeace

We are in the process of creating a common login to our website.
Unfortunately, I have not come across any good login code for use with a
site/application that conforms to the fusebox standard. What we have in mind
is:
1. Conforms to the fusebox standard.
2. Security database would have three tables; Users, application, and
rights. The Users table would have user info: UserID, Username, password,
available (enable/disable), FirstName, and LastName. The application table
would have the AppID, AppName, UserType (Admin/Super/User), and available
(enable/disable) fields. The available field would allow for you to disable
access for the application to specific user types. The Rights table would
have RightsId, foreign key to UserID, foreign key to AppID, and Usertype
(Admin/Super/User) and specifies what type of user the person is on each
application.
3. The rights that each of the usertypes have would be specified by the
application (in a security table).
4. Encrypted passwords if possible.
5. Is usable for simple websites that have an admin function (uploading
minutes by admin support), and more complex applications.

Anyone have any suggestions on improvements to this and/or code snippets
that I could use?

Thx in advance!

Squid is a distributed proxy system - basically it is a proxy server that
talks to other squid proxy servers to form a "pool" of cached data. It looks
like one of the squid nodes has a problem and is causing this error. Your
client may be able to bypass the squid proxy, depends on his network set up.

There's a docs folder supposedly. index.html. (For some reason I put the
example page in index.cfm for that tag and it confused people who's default
doc ordering is cfm, html, etc...)

If you do CFX_CommandConsole Command="dir c:" output="yes", then it should
capture all the output in "commandconsole". cfoutput that.

2000-09-20 Thread Karl Simanonok

>So far all of the people that are not fans of fusebox simply do not
know how
>to use it and have spent no time reading the documentation or

I have used fusebox for several large projects, mainly because clients
have heard of it and without really understanding it they insist on
their application being built with it. On the plus side, if I had to
fix or enhance somebody else's code I would prefer that it be written
fusebox-style, just to help me more easily track what templates do what
in a complex application that I did not write. The same goes for
working with other developers on the same project (but only if it's a
very complex project). That is the only slight advantage I have been
able to determine. The downside is that it slows development time
because of extra logic that must be incorporated into index.cfm and
because the debugger reports most errors as occurring in index.cfm.
Fusebox probably slightly reduces performance because every template is
CFINCLUDEd within CFSWITCH/CFCASE logic in index.cfm, but I haven't gone
to the trouble of measuring performance explicitly in two otherwise
identical fusebox and non-fusebox applications so I don't know how much.

The thing I like least about the fusebox specification is the really
stupid filenaming system which scatters related modules away from each
other in a directory view (qryCustomerInfo.cfm and qryPrecincts.cfm are
not likely to be related except by their general function of containing
queries; it's far more helpful to name templates by functional groups
like CustomerList.cfm, CustomerEdit.cfm, and CustomerUpdate.cfm).

I think fusebox has its greatest value in large applications which are
being built by multiple developers simultaneously, as long as you ignore
the fusebox filenaming system which negates any advantages. For small
applications (perhaps two dozen templates or fewer) there's no advantage
I can see. Hopefully the filenaming convention will be improved as
fusebox evolves into a more mature programming methodology.

String Appending [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread PC

I am wondering if there's a better way to build up a string in a CFLOOP than
to use a statement such as..

My experience with this kind of looping append is that it is inefficient
because the variable continues to grow and must be copied in memory each
time it grows bigger per loop.

I can seem to find an append function in CF... is there one? Or is there a
better way to do it? Perhaps using listappend function or somesuch? JUst
looking for any comments if anyone understands/knows what I am dealing with
here... thx!

RE: Somewhat OT: Is it possible to detect a mail client from a web page [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread Mark Warrick

I don't think you can detect the mail client.

And by the way, I seriously doubt you could detect the mail client BEFORE they sent
you a message.

I can see from the message you posted to the list that you're using "Microsoft
Exchange Internet Mail Service Version 5.5.2650.21" as your outbound SMTP server,
however that doesn't tell me anything about the actual mail client you're using.

This is a fairly broad generalization. How do you know that we haven't read
the documentation or researched its implementation? This is beginning to
turn into a "If you don't use Fusebox, you must obviously suck as a CF
programmer" kind of debate, which serves no real purpose. Dave Watts has
fairly eloquently stated his reasons for not using Fusebox, which I agree
with in most cases. I happen to use Fusebox in some cases, but I am aware

Re: String Appending [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread Michael Dinowitz

A list is simply a string with a 'delimiter' between pieces of text. What
the listappend() function does is the same thing as simple string
concatenation with the extra step of adding the delimiter.
"Every list is a string, Every string can be seen as a list"

RE: [CF-Talk] Random Images-Resources for Information?

2000-09-20 Thread Chapman, Katrina

This wouldn't really be random. It would ensure that the same number
doesn't come up two times in a row, but that's not random.

According to m-w.com random (as an adjective, which is how we're using it)
is "being or relating to a set or to an element of a set each of whose
elements has equal probability of occurrence"

The key words here being "equal probability of occurrence". By putting that
number in a list you make that numbers chance of beign used 0. Therefore
the next number is no longer random.

I'm not saying that your solution isn't what this person needs but the
number isn't completely random. Just like Jim McAtee said you have the
chance of one number coming up ten, a hundred, even a thousand times in a
row. Is it likely that will happen? No, but it could. The smaller the set
of numbers to choose from the more likely that is to happen. It's the same
as you were taught in school when you learned averages. Just because you
flip a quarter 100 times doesn't mean you'll get 50 heads and 50 tails. Try
it.

RE: Does Anyone understand encrypt/decrypt??? [CF-Talk]

You might try using the trim function when setting the variable.

This will remove the trailing spaces that might be invalidating the encrypted
string.

Any ideas

I'm wondering what kind of a response this is...

I'd hazard a guess that you have no idea how much experience some of us have
in ColdFusion. These kinds of blanket statements are usually proven wrong.

I've worked with fusebox, but I prefer not to. I know how to do it if I
need to work with it, but I don't like to. That's like saying that everyone
must write all of their documents in calligraphy because it looks better.
However, it, like fusebox takes a lot longer to do.

RE: Rebuilding a LapTop, Migrate Local CF Server ODBC Data Sources [CF-Talk]

2000-09-20 Thread Eric Dawson

Jumping in in middle.

hmmm. I restored CF settings on a new install for scheduled tasks, custom
tags, and ODBC etc, by creating an export file containing the registry
entries. I can't remember how I created the smaller.reg file, but if there
is not an export function in regedit, notepad works fine.

Worked pretty slick for me. copied file stru, and then double clicked the
smaller.reg files to make the appropriate registry entries.

Also, check your windows Directory for a file called ODBC.ini. I've never
tried this, but perhaps if you copy that file to the new machine and reboot
all the datasources will be setup.
