Ahh, but I didn't say anything about fiscal *strength*, just fiscal sense.
It makes no sense to offer discounts on a product that you know is going to
sell-out anyway. That'd be like giving away money. Then the class action

I go to conferences every other day that offer group discounts. I just went
to one today. We took five developers, paid about 700 bucks per person,
after a $300 discount per head. This is definitely not a sign of fiscal
strength. I'd say it's quite the opposite, but that'd sound like I wanted to
start something, which I don't... ;)

Ed

Offering discounts to an event that's gonna sell-out anyway wouldn't make
much fiscal sense. Take it as a good sign that CF is a winner in the
 marketplace despite the fickle stockmarket.

I would use a stored proc.

You might be able to use variables inside the stored proc to avoid
recalculating, but even if you can't, the DBMS might optimize
it automatically, and even if it doesn't, this is only CPU stuff.

Subject: [OT} Advice on SQL Cursor

I have a query that involves a distance calculation. This actually
is series of trig functions computed for each row in the recordset.

some of the sub calculations are repeated several times (degrees to
radians),
test to avoid divide by zero, etc.

the overall calculation is repeated at least twice once in the SELECT
clause

and again in the WHERE clause

and possibly in the ORDER BY clause

This seems inefficient and I am looking for a better way.

The inefficiency is caused by the inability to compute a value and
set a variable for each record... and then reuse the variable later
in the processing of the same record (rather than recompute the value
for each occurrence of the calculation).

The only way I can see to do this is by using a cursor...

Everything I have been told or read about cursors says to avoid them.

However, a cursor seems better than:

an inefficient query or sproc (above)

returning the entire recordset to CF and then loop through the query,
performing the calculations

Any recommendations?

TIA

Dick

One thing you might want to bear in mind is that all 3 areas you

use it as a reference it could be a good idea to get a book that

I've never had any classes/training/books on it. So I know the basic stuff
(select, insert, update etc.) and would like to get into more indepth things
as I do not like having to write 10 queries that could be summed up into 1.

What i'm looking for is a very good book that shows lots of examples for all
the things i dont know :)
like
Joins (Inner joins, outer joins... whatever)
Functions (date, append)
and Table Information (char vs. varchar, image, text etc.)

RE: [OT} Advice on SQL Cursor

2000-09-26 Thread mherbene

I think what I've read about cursors is "use them with caution", as
programmers used to doing record-by-record manipulations a la DBase or early
MS Access may use them when they shouldn't. This may be a good place to use
them. I imagine the only way to be sure of what will be more efficient is
to test.

By the way, you may be able to save one calculation; in some SQL
implementations you can use a number in the order by clause that identifies
which item in the SELECT clause you wish to sort by, e.g.

select myfield, yourfield
from sometable
order by 1

which orders by "myfield".

Some kind of internship could be appropriate, it would get you some business
experiance and a little more development work, might not pay much, but its
an option

RE: CF Career Advice?

2000-09-26 Thread Daye, Marianne

Location may be a factor. In my location (RTP, NC) the demand is so great
that many employers have to settle for less than what they'd hoped for,
which is a great opportunity for an entry level who just wants an
opportunity to prove himself. My experience was limited when I got my
present job; a professional presentation of previous work done got me in the
door, and they've been training me ever since.

Hello Folks,

Wow. I have s much to learn. Just when I think I am getting to
know CF, I come across this discussion list and I realize I am barely
scratching the surface.

I could really use some help in the professional development area.
Situation: New college grad working at a province-wide non-profit in a
relatively rural area, that wants the world while recompensing me on
the same level as McBurger flipper and is not willing to invest
anything in professional development. Now the choice here is
obvious - get another job!

But where? How? Every CF Developer wanted ad asks for far more than I
have or can learn in the boondocks. Is anyone looking for a junior CF
Developer? (Qualifying factor - in Ontario, Canada or willing to
sponsor) I really want to learn so much more about web developing yet
I cannot seem to find the opportunities. (Yes, I realize I am whining
at this point.) Please advise.

Re: CF Career Advice?

2000-09-26 Thread J.Milks

Howdy,
Well, you came to the right list. As a fellow ontarian (sort of, live in
Quebec, work in Ontario), I have felt your pain. First of all, the rural
thing will need to change. Until you are experienced and can bid on stuff
from your backyard, you have to go where the work is. In my opinion Toronto
and the surrounding area is too damn expensive, and the lifestyle sucks
(unless you are young, single and into clubbing...note to american friends:
not seals, night clubs).

So what's left? Ottawa! OK, so I'm biased, but I have doing CF for about 18
months in a non-CF town, and I turn down about 2 or 3 gigs a month. If you
know ASP, you can go anywhere in government as well. Java, C++? There are
over 1700 telecommunications and related high tech companies here, who are
offering PT Cruisers and Superbikes as incentives because talent is so hard
to find. Housing is still cheap (although that is changing), and a 10 minute
drive gets you to cottage country.

If moving is not in the cards, you need to take control of your career. Your
employer is a not-for-profit, which usually translates to not-deep-pockets.
Just keep learning and keep your options open. Hope I don't sound like your
mom.

Best of luck

Jim

Re: CF Career Advice?

2000-09-26 Thread Todd Ashworth

The same with me. I was lucky and was able to move from a telephone
tech-support position right into ColdFusion. I'm close to Charlotte, NC,
but I'm probably one of the few people actually in my town that uses it, so
I haven't exactly had proper guidance. Still .. I've learned a lot these
past 13 months and am really just now becoming marketable in the industry.

On a related note, our company just started working with some local
colleges. We've set up a prgram where we take about 3 students with a
certain level of technical skill and 'hire' them. They come to work for us
a few hours every day, but don't get paid. What they *do* get is credit for
some of their classes and real work experience. We usually bring them on
when we have a large project that we need to do. The students start with us
at the begining of the project and work with us through all phases to the
end.

This gives them a little experience in all areas including a full SDLC,
database design, SQL, web server setup and administration, CF programming,
and gives them 3 months of experience and 1 fully completed, large scale
project under their belt for their resume.

You might be able to look for something similar, but where they might pay
you a little something ;)

I wish I had access to something like that when I started out .. just a
thought.

SQL help

2000-09-26 Thread Richard Kern

I'm sending this attempt w/o attachements. The CF code is inline after
signature. No DB.

Here is one possible solution. It uses a noncorrelated inner query and a
union.
I built a simple access db like you diagrammed (attached)
query and output are contained in .cfm page (attached)

output is as desired returning 2 rows. Those of active status plus the news
for the year 2000 active status (news replaces the 'other' field when
available).

Does this resolve the question?
Richard

_ begin cf code

CFQUERY NAME="news" DATASOURCE="mcatee"
SELECT area,status,other
FROM Table1 T
WHERE '2000' IN
   (SELECTyear
 FROM Table2
 WHERE T.ID = ID)

UNION

SELECT area,year,news
FROM Table2
WHERE Table2.year = '2000'
/CFQUERY
!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"

html
head
titleDB Trial/title
/head

body
TABLE
TR

TH WIDTH="65" ALIGN="left"Area/TH
TH WIDTH="165" ALIGN="left"Status/year/TH
TH WIDTH="275" ALIGN="left"Other/NEWS for the active/TH

/TR

CFOUTPUT QUERY="news"TR

TD WIDTH="65"#news.Area#/TD
TD WIDTH="165"#news.Status#/TD
TD WIDTH="275"#news.Other#/TD

/TR
/CFOUTPUT
/TABLE

/body
/html

 end cf code

Richard,

Thank you for your help. Maybe if I give a much simpler example, you'll
get an idea of what I'm after.

TABLE1 (Areas) TABLE2(AreaNews)
 ==
Area Status(OtherStuff) Area Year News
         -
co01 ACTIVExx co01 1998 x
 co01 1999 xxx
 co01 2000 xx
co02 INACTIVE xx co02 1997 xx
 co02 1998 x
co03 ACTIVE co03 1998 xxx
 co03 1999

So, in the above example, TABLE1 has 3 records, TABLE2 has 8 records, I
want (in english): "All the active areas, along with any news for the
year 2000". The query should return 2 rows, only the first of which
would have news for 2000. Note that I'm selecting some other fields
from TABLE1, but just News from TABLE2.

Thanks,
Jim

The post is not entirely clear, You imply wanting 682 records (all A
'along
with "news"')
but specify only 593. Selecting only 'actives' in A will get 593 as
you
desire. But, I will
consider that you want records from A and B that meet your criteria.
In
that case 89 records
meet 'active' and 'year = 2000'. So the query apparently works.
However if
you want 682 (
all A and those in B that meet the criteria) look at a 'union'.

select_statement
WHERE
UNION
select_statement
WHERE
ORDER BY (only one order clause allowed)

(quick review of some SQL)
1. an outer join shows the join plus all the records that did not
qualify from the first named table in your join specification.

2. A right join will do the same for the records in the second table.

3. non matching rows in either table can also be specified from either
table (left or right join)

4. a union combines data from multiple queries into one display and by
default
removes duplicates (but check your documentation) UNION ALL will will
include
the duplicates

5. depending on your SQl implementation the join may be specified in
the
WHERE (rather than the FROM) clause using
*= (include all rows from first table) or =* (include all rows in
second
table)

Try it again, with a subject this time...

Can't figure out why the following query behaves like it does, but
I'm guessing there must be something fundamental about how SQL
operates that I'm not comprehending.

I've got a one:many relationship between table A and table B. Table
B records represent "new for year" for a given record in
table A. For example, there can be 0 or 1 "new for 2000" record in
table B for one record in table A. I've got about 650 records in
table A, with 593 of them with a status of 'ACTIVE'. In table B,
there are about 1000 records, and exactly 89 are for the year 2000.

Table A:
areacode varchar(5)
status varchar(10)

Possible to email file as an attachment from CF?

2000-09-26 Thread Ryan

Is there a way to email a file as an attachment from CF?

From a CF template I need create a bunch of files from DB
database data into a directory. Then I need to zip up
the files in to a zip file, and then email this out as
an attachment.

I imagine I will first have to find a zip tag that runs
on linux, but then I have no idea how to attach a file
in CF.

Thanks,

gets me to my "Under Construction" page. Emails to the site owner as well as

RE: performance white papers

2000-09-26 Thread ron

For the uninitiated, how (roughly) do you send email with ASP? I don't use
it so I don't know, but I am often asked why a client should fork
 out for CF
when they can have ASP.. seems like a good example.

Something like this, with the excellent (and free) JMail component by
dimac.com:

Set JMail = Server.CreateObject("JMail.SMTPMail")
JMail.ServerAddress = SMTPServer
JMail.Sender = WelcomeMessageSender
JMail.Subject = WelcomeMessageSubject
JMail.Body = WelcomeMessageBody
JMail.AddRecipient EmailAddr
JMail.Execute
Set JMail = nothing

Not that tough, was it? And the bonus is that JMail, like most real popular
COM objects, has roughly 30 or so methods you can call on to do advanced
stuff that's impossible or impractical with CFMail, like error trapping,
custom headers, multiple attachments, etc.

RE: Post form data in (to) CF

2000-09-26 Thread Zachary Bedell

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

One thing that immediately jumps out at me is your POST line. HTTP
spec doesn't include the entire URL in the POST, only the path info.
So this:
  POST http://xyz.xyz.com/1.cfm HTTP/1.0
should actually be:
  POST /1.cfm HTTP/1.0
  Host: xyz.xyz.com

You can include the hostname in a host header if need be (depending
on how your server is setup, that might be required). The POST
should only include the path, tho.

Other possible gotchas:

There's no Content-Type header in your request. Try adding:
Content-type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded

Your POST data isn't URL encoded. For the body of your HTTP request,
try:
date_id=2000%2D09%2D21

I think among those three things, you should be able to get a
successful POST. CF is a far more picky beast than Perl is,
unfortunately...

Best regards, and good luck!

Look at CFMAIL

Attachments sent with the MIMEATTACH parameter...

That is for 4.0.

In 4.5, you can attach more that 1 file using CFMAILPARAM.

I beg to differ.

Using the CFMAILPARAM in 4.5, you can send multiple attachments and custom

cfmail to="" from="" subject=""

/cfmail

Migrating Advanced Security Policy Store

2000-09-26 Thread Mary_Baotic

I have just upgraded our advanced security policy store on a test CF server
running 4.5.1. I followed the instructions line by line in Article 14566 in the
Knowledgebase. It went well, there were no errors.

Now when I go to the Advanced Security tab in Cold Fusion administrator I get
the following error: Security Policy action failed.

Does anyone know why this would come about? I looked in the knowledgebase, but
all I find is an article about being disconnected from the network which this
server isn't.

Any information would be helpful

TIA,
Mary

So this:

do you know of a resource for something like this? I would like to verify
my GET requests also

There's no Content-Type header in your request. Try adding:
Content-type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded

bingo. I added that (even with all my other oops), and it worked. thanks :)

Your POST data isn't URL encoded. For the body of your HTTP request,
try:
date_id=2000%2D09%2D21

I will actually be receiving the data encoded already. Thanks for pointing
this out though..

I am much more use to PERL (and PHP now) when CF. At least I know what is
going on in them :)

I am working on a project where I need to construct the actual HTTP
request. I have run into a roadblock with CFM form pages though. Does
anyone know how CF handles form data in a post? CF seems to be
expecting/seeing things different then a CGI script.
here are a couple of examples as to what I am doing as well as there
 unexplainable results.

1.1) my test PERL script (just displays the post data)

 [/opt/cgi-bin]% cat 2.pl
 #!/usr/local/bin/perl
 use CGI;
 $query=new CGI;

 print $query-header;
 print $query-param('date_id');

1.2) The request to that script
 [~]$ telnet xyz 80

 Escape character is '^]'.
 POST http://xyz.xyz.com/cgi-bin/2.pl HTTP/1.0

 2.1) the CFM page
 cfoutput #form.date_id#/cfoutput

2.2) The request to the CF page

RE: CF Career Advice?

2000-09-26 Thread Mark Warrick

Build a web site demonstrating your skills in HTML, ColdFusion, and SQL.

The best way to learn is to teach someone else, so, perhaps you can put together a
tutorial site for other newbies.

But anyway, by building the site, you will be accomplishing two things: first off,
you'll have created a good web site. Secondly, your potential employer should have no
doubts that you know your stuff.

In other words, do this, and I can pretty much guarantee that you're going to get a
job.

OpenSource CustomTag for sending HTML Email

2000-09-26 Thread Joshua Miller

http://www.eagletgi.com/CustomTags/HTMLEmail.zip

I posted a message about how to send HTML Email the other day and since
Gavin Myers responded so quickly with help, I thought it would only be
polite and fair to offer the tag I wrote to accomplish this to everyone on
the list. Feel free to modify, tweak or rewrite the tag to function more
efficiently or whatever. It would be nice if we could start a forum for Open
Source CustomTags - trading tags and working as a vast team to build
rock-solid functionality. I know Allaire has the Developer Exchange, but
things seem to move more quickly in this kind of forum.

This tag will allow you to send HTML formatted email from a webform to
either individual email addresses or an entire database of email recipients.
You can send existing pages (the href, src and action attributes get the
full URL appended when you submit the form) or you can drop in HTML source
which can either be stuck between a header/footer or sent as-is. It's fully
customizeable, so it's only limited by your imagination and needs.

Thanks for the help Gavin!

RE: Cheap CF Hosting FOUND

 http://www.v-domains.com/
 9.95 per month includes CF.
Did you notice that if you want a database at all you have to go up
 to $19.95 a month though.

Ugh! Says who? Just use direct OLEDB access, and you don't need them
to setup a DSN at all. Just upload your Access DB and use a CFQuery
line like this:

cfset DBPath = "D:\InetPub\wwwRoot\YourSite.com\file.mdb"
Cfquery name="QueryName"
datasource="#DBPath#"
dbtype="OLEDB"
provider="Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0"
providerdsn="#DBPath#"
username="Admin"
password=""
SQL...
/cfquery

I know this might be a little off the edge of the list charter, and I
hate to blow my own horn, but...

We host for $29.95 a month if anyone's interested. That includes FTP
access, 5 email accounts, unlimited email forwarding, MS FrontPage 2k
support, ASP, CFM, your own IP address (none of that host header
garbage I've seen a lot of other hosts using lately), and some
assorted other goodies. We don't charge extra for DB access unless
you need a DSN or SQL server or something.

AND, if you email me, I get back to you within the day if at all
possible. And you can even call me on the telephone get a live
person (namely me) if you need it.

I won't post contact info on the list, but if you wanted to email
directly, I can give info to anyone who's interested.

My apologies in advance if anyone's offended by the more or less
blatant commercial plug, but... It seems relevant to this thread.

RE: Post form data in (to) CF

2000-09-26 Thread Zachary Bedell

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

One thing that immediately jumps out at me is your POST line.
HTTP spec doesn't include the entire URL in the POST, only the
 path info. So this:
POST http://xyz.xyz.com/1.cfm HTTP/1.0
 should actually be:
POST /1.cfm HTTP/1.0
Host: xyz.xyz.com

do you know of a resource for something like this? I would
 like to verify
 my GET requests also

Try RFC 2616. That's the HTTP/1.1 spec, so you can't get much more
definitive than that. It's a bit of a tome (200ish pages), but if
you're writing even a simple HTTP agent, it's really required
reading. It also points out more information on assorted other
resources like MIME URL encoding.

That RFC can be found at http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2616.txt.

There's no Content-Type header in your request. Try adding:
 Content-type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded

bingo. I added that (even with all my other oops), and it
 worked. thanks :)

You're quite welcome!

Your POST data isn't URL encoded. For the body of your HTTP
 request, try:
 date_id=2000%2D09%2D21

I will actually be receiving the data encoded already. Thanks
 for pointing this out though..

OK. That's definitely one thing that will give CF indigestion...
(*burp!*)

I think among those three things, you should be able to get a
successful POST. CF is a far more picky beast than Perl is,
 unfortunately...

I am much more use to PERL (and PHP now) when CF. At least I
know what is going on in them :)

*nods* In general, CF is just picky. As long as you follow the RFC,
you should be okay.

BE AWARE, however that CF disregards the RFC itself in a few spots.
Namely it doesn't use CR/LF to delimit all of its headers as it
should. Tags like CFContent, CFHeader, or anything else that
manipulate the returned headers sometimes use an LF only; even tho
the RFC specifies that CF/LF is REQUIRED. That's something to be
aware of if you'll be parsing returns from CF.

Zac Bedell

IE on Macs and rendering pages

2000-09-26 Thread David Sparkman

Here is a bizarre one for everyone:
On the Mac IE 4.5 or IE 5.0 -
Hitting a page that does a cflocation to another method (fuseaction). That
page inserts information into a database then relocates the user to another
method. This page simply displays a signup page for the user. The problem is
that the source code that is visible to the Mac is missing the entire header
of the page. So the Mac starts rendering mid page. If you hit refresh the
page appears normally. Has any one else seen this type of behavior, and is
there a work around that anyone is aware of?

Thanks,
David Sparkman

RE: Date Timestamp??

2000-09-26 Thread DeVoil, Nick

How do I input the current date and time into a database?

Rich

The simplest way is to set up the table so that the current date/time
is the default value for that column. Then you don't need to timestamp
it yourself, the DBMS does it for you.

Re: Public Rates Discussion

2000-09-26 Thread Bud

On 9/25/00, Mark Warrick penned:
It's perfectly legal for you to post your rates on your web site.
What is illegal is talking about those rates amongst other
developers who offer similar services in an open, public forum.

Hey Mark! You know you're my hero (talking me into learning CF and
all that) so I hate to disagree, but my opinion is, it's perfectly
legal to tell anyone in any forum what you charge. It's public
information. You think when a bunch of doctors or lawyers get
together at a convention they don't talk about the outrageous hourly
fees they charge? What IS illegal is if the conversation turns to:

"I think as a community in general, we are not making what we are
worth. How about we agree to never charge less than XX dollars an
hour?"

THAT is price fixing. And being an open public forum doesn't matter.
If I called just ONE cf developer on the phone and said that to them,
I'd be guilty of price fixing.

Just my humble uneducated opinion though. :-D

RE: More law suits

2000-09-26 Thread Claremont, Timothy S

Keep in mind that lawsuits of this type are far from rare. Virtually every
time a corporations stock goes down there are people who feel betrayed or
violated. These people (perhaps with good cause, and perhaps not) often feel
the need to sue based on the chance that there was some questionable
activity on the part of the corporation. And while it may very well be
founded in this case, remember that it is not in any way unusual, or even
indicative of any wrongdoing, necessarilly.

CF, PHP vs. JSP?

2000-09-26 Thread Steven Katz

Hi,

I'm developing a site that will eventually involve some dynamic
components. I intended to use CF or PHP, but the client is
leaning towards JSP. In what scenario would this be a better
option? Any famous lists of pros and cons out there?

Thanks.

CFQUERY/CFSTOREDPROC error

2000-09-26 Thread Andy Ewings

I have a problem! the following code does not work:

cfset ID = url.ID
cfquery name="test" datasource="UfICourses" username="administrator"
password="administrator"
SELECT * FROM corskeys WHERE ID = #ID#
/cfquery

the datasource definitely exists, the username and password are definitely
right, and the SQL table definitely exists with 550,000 recs in it. The
value of #ID# is an integer which is the data type of the field ID.

I get the following error message:

CMemoryException: unknown cause
PCodeRuntimeContextImp::executeSQLTagCFQuery::endTag
The error occurred while processing an element with a general identifier of
(CFQUERY), occupying document position (7:1) to (7:95).

This code runs fine in ISQL. I have also tried hard-codeing in a value for
ID but that doesn't work either. I have also tried converting it to an SP
but, although the SP works ok, CF produces the same error.

Any ideas?

Default Error Files

2000-09-26 Thread Kelly Matthews

I have always used my own custom Error files... I define them in
CF Administrator under Settings at the bottom where it asks for
Missing Template Handler
and
Site-Wide Error Handler.
These have always worked suddenly today it has reverrted back to the
plain IIS error screens. I changed NOTHING. Any idea what i need
to look at to fix this? The error file pointers are still there. I am
at a loss.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hey cold fusion people,

I'm trying to find out if anyone has done any portable applications for any
clients? I have a project starting here soon and I need to allow the client
to gather information in the field in some type of database or flat file and
then when they go online they can sync with a SQL Server to update it with
the information they have gathered in the field.

Has anyone done this type of application? I just want to find out how you
tackled this type of project.

Try using the GetDate() function. This is in Transact SQL (M$ SQL 6.5 and 7
I think), I'm not sure if it is an ANSI function. If not, use:

#DateFormat(Now(), 'mmm dd, ')# #TimeFormat(Now(), 'HH:mm:ss')#

in Cold Fusion.

So, the pressing question would be: what has changed on the server? New
MDAC installed? Some service pack installed? What version of CF? On which
platform? Which database? Does a simple cf page such as:

cfoutputTime is #now()#/cfoutput fail?

I have started to get the following error on an app I'm working on but
  only
in Netscape. This doesn't occur at all when I load the app in IE. This
doesn't make any sense because the error is a server side error, yet the
error only appears to occur when I'm using Netscape. I'm sifting through
  my
code and can't find any suspicious code which seems problematic.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing the error and why
  it
only appears when I use Netscape?

Subject: "OpenSource" CustomTag for sending HTML Email

 http://www.eagletgi.com/CustomTags/HTMLEmail.zip

I posted a message about how to send HTML Email the other day and since
Gavin Myers responded so quickly with help, I thought it would only be
polite and fair to offer the tag I wrote to accomplish this to everyone on
the list. Feel free to modify, tweak or rewrite the tag to function more
efficiently or whatever. It would be nice if we could start a forum for
Open
Source CustomTags - trading tags and working as a vast team to build
rock-solid functionality. I know Allaire has the Developer Exchange, but
things seem to move more quickly in this kind of forum.

This tag will allow you to send HTML formatted email from a webform to
either individual email addresses or an entire database of email
recipients.
You can send existing pages (the href, src and action attributes get the
full URL appended when you submit the form) or you can drop in HTML source
which can either be stuck between a header/footer or sent as-is. It's
fully
customizeable, so it's only limited by your imagination and needs.

 Thanks for the help Gavin!

How do I input the current date and time into a database?

Rich

The simplest way is to set up the table so that the current date/time
is the default value for that column. Then you don't need to timestamp
it yourself, the DBMS does it for you.

David,

Yes. Any page with any CF is now failing. I'm now pouring thru the 160+
messages on the Allaire Forums and reviewing several Knowledgebase articles.
It appears that there are a variety of potential causes and apparently the
situation gets progressively worse till everything fails (which is
apparently where I have arrived).

I'm thinking the likely culprit may be a cfif testing an empty string or a
cfif something="sometext" or a locking issue.

I'm not using cfmail, cfpop or cfhttp so that rules out a number of the
common causes. If anyone has any other advice as to common causes of this
error, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Chris

So, the pressing question would be: what has changed on the server? New
MDAC installed? Some service pack installed? What version of CF? On which
platform? Which database? Does a simple cf page such as:

cfoutputTime is #now()#/cfoutput fail?

That's the thing of it. It's now happening on ever single CF page on our

Probably going to need to see some code to get the context of the situation.

I have started to get the following error on an app I'm working on but
only
in Netscape. This doesn't occur at all when I load the app in IE. This
doesn't make any sense because the error is a server side error, yet the
error only appears to occur when I'm using Netscape. I'm sifting through
my

Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing the error and why
it

If you are wanting to put the current date and time try this:

 #CreateODBCDateTime(Now())#

That will insert the current date and time as a timestamp

CFLOCK Cached Query

2000-09-26 Thread paul smith

Should I CFLOCK the following query?

CFQUERY NAME="Request.GetListings" DATASOURCE="#request.DSN#"
USERNAME="#request.USER#"
PASSWORD="#request.PASS#"  cachedwithin="#createtimespan(0,0,15,0)#"
SELECT ID,org_name,contact,city,website_bt,email_bt,classified_bt,fax_bt,TList
FROM Orgs (nolock)
WHERE Class = #VAL(request.hdg_id)#
CFIF "#CLIENT.CITY#" IS NOT "All Cities" AND City = '#CLIENT.CITY#'/CFIF
ORDER BY org_name
/CFQUERY

For different values of request.hdg_id or CLIENT.CITY, CF will cache the
correct dataset for NEXT/PREVIOUS display of results on a page (since CF
caches reference the SQL too, and not just the cfquery name). There are
potentially many DIFFERENT datasets, ALL titled Request.GetListings (in the
CF template, that is). For example, CF will cache one dataset where
CLIENT.CITY is New York, and another dataset where CLIENT.CITY is Chicago,
and they apparently happily co-exist.

But what happens if we followed Allaire's best practices (in CF4.5 syntax):

cflock scope="application" timeout="2" type="exclusive"
 cfset application.GetListings = Request.GetListings
/cflock

Would the potentially several queries/datasets all named
Request.GetListings (in the CF template) be kept distinct when they are
named application.GetListings?

best, paul

PS How would I do the above cflock in CF4.x?

CFMODULE and weird space

2000-09-26 Thread Bryan Stevenson

Hi All,

I'm using cfmodule instead of a custom tag. The file being called is a
simple process for formatting phone numbers. When I used it as a custom
tag all was fine, but now that I use cfmodule to call it there is a
mysterious extra space being displayed.

The problem:
I want a single space in front of of the formatted phone number.

You might say "just put a non-breaking space in front of it you fool"
:o)
Well I tried that and to my surprise there are 2 spaces!! All other data
being displayed with the single non-breaking space in front only show 1
space. So it seems to be the cfmodule (or the tag) that is adding this
space. I went into the file being called using cfmodule and tried
putting all the output on 1 line (which can remove mystery spaces in
Netscape) to no avail.

So instead of beating my head against the wall for the rest of the day I
thought I would ask everyone for some help.

HELP! :o)

Thanks in advance

SQL Stored Procedure Question...

2000-09-26 Thread Top-Link Tech (John Ceci)

Hey All,

Got a quick one for all of you...

I am implementing a stored procedure and I cant seem to get a LIKE clause to
work with a variable passed in:

SHORT VERSION OF CODE:
=

CREATE PROCEDURE GetContacts @alpha varchar(1) AS

SELECT Contacts_Main.company
FROM Contacts_Main
WHERE (Contacts_Main.company LIKE '@alpha%')
ORDER BY Contacts_Main.company

===

When I turn on execution plan I see that the variable was never escaped to
its value...now I assume this is because the variable is inside of ' '
marks, what would the syntax for this look like?

Thanks in advance!

Error attempting to write location redirection to web server

Does anyone know what this error is referring to? Its not in the Allaire KB

"ERROR","TID=492","09/19/00","18:48:13","Error attempting to write location

I really wish there was a good resource that has a list of all the various
errors you could get in your ColdFusion logs and what they mean.

Thank You,

Excel Charts

2000-09-26 Thread Eric Dawson

I am looking through the archive as we speak. with no immediate luck. I want
to grab excel charts for presentation on an intranet.

Background. I have created a basic web interface to collect data into an
access database. I use excel to link to the data and generate charts and
tables etc to be inserted into word documents as objects. I have the excel
spreadsheets sitting on the web server, so I know I can grab the charts and
diaply them on the Intranet, but need to figure out how. Can't seem to find
reference in the archive, although I know it is there. Any helps is
appreciated, but not expected.

RE: More law suits

2000-09-26 Thread Les Mizzell

I find these lawsuits so terribly moronic!

It's like buying a volcanic island in the Pacific to build yourself a new
home, KNOWING full well that the volcano is prone to being active.and
then suing the former owner when the thing erupts one year later and
destroys your new house...

I can't sue the casino when I lose all my money there either.

Best/Worse caseall this stupidity will drive the stock even lower, and
we'll all buy lots of shares before it rebounds again so we can retire
early.

Some people say I'm too apathetic.

This may have been answered here before, but I'm not sure. I'll ask anyway.

Is there anyway to use Access 2000 Databases with CFServer 4.0??? I get an
error every time I try and use Access 2000 dbs.

THANKS!

RE: More law suits

2000-09-26 Thread Peter Theobald

Actually, this particular lawyer bringing this class-action lawsuit against Allaire is
well known for suing as soon as a stock price drops and looking for evidence of
wrong-doing later. He often settles out of court without every finding anything.

Read up on him. It's very informative, and very sickening.

At 12:04 PM 9/26/00 -0400, Claremont, Timothy S wrote:
Keep in mind that lawsuits of this type are far from rare. Virtually every
time a corporations stock goes down there are people who feel betrayed or
violated. These people (perhaps with good cause, and perhaps not) often feel
the need to sue based on the chance that there was some questionable
activity on the part of the corporation. And while it may very well be
founded in this case, remember that it is not in any way unusual, or even
indicative of any wrongdoing, necessarilly.

Do you have 4.0 or 4.5. If 4.5, do you have SP1?

I have started to get the following error on an app I'm working on but
only
in Netscape. This doesn't occur at all when I load the app in IE. This
doesn't make any sense because the error is a server side error, yet the
error only appears to occur when I'm using Netscape. I'm sifting through
my
code and can't find any suspicious code which seems problematic.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing the error and why
it
only appears when I use Netscape?

David,

So, the pressing question would be: what has changed on the server? New
MDAC installed? Some service pack installed? What version of CF? On which
platform? Which database? Does a simple cf page such as:

cfoutputTime is #now()#/cfoutput fail?

That's the thing of it. It's now happening on ever single CF page on our

Probably going to need to see some code to get the context of the situation.

If you are wanting to put the current date and time try this:

 #CreateODBCDateTime(Now())#

That will insert the current date and time as a timestamp
