RE: OT SQL SERVER

2001-01-08 Thread DeVoil, Nick

From http://www.sql-server-performance.com/glossary.asp :

When rows are deleted from the leaf level of an index, the are not removed
immediately. Instead, they are marked as invalid and are called ghost
records. Periodically, SQL Server starts a special housekeeping thread that
locates and removes the ghost records.

Sorry for the OT question, but I don't know where else to turn.

What is a ghost record or transaction. I am watching a SQL DELETE command
run in SQL profiler and it is VERY slow and I am seeing a great many SQL
transactions with 'ghost' in the text of the transaction. What can I do to
correct this?

Hi - wondering if anyone on the list can give me some advice please.

The following risk calculator was done in-house for use on our Intranet but
now the business area want to make it available on the web.

The trouble is it only runs in IE5 because it uses vml (a proprietary MS
thing which I hadn't heard of apparently).

I suggested that they have a look at JavaScript of Java so that it can run
in other browsers but they're a bit hard pressed for time, resources and
skills. Do you think it can be done with CF

RE: Slightly OT: CF in Europe

2001-01-08 Thread DeVoil, Nick

Well this is a completely subjective view but my perception is that
CF is considered quite a hot technology here in the UK.

I don't know, but I believe the relative strength of CF versus ASP
is stronger in the US than in Europe because a lot of people in the US
started building web apps before ASP came out or was usable.

By the time the UK got started, ASP was a viable option, and no-one ever
got fired for buying Microsoft products, as they used to say of IBM.

Allaire's reputation for quality doesn't seem to be perfect, but then
neither is Microsoft's.

Maybe PHP is popular in Europe because it was invented here is largely
developed here. But I think decent-sized organisations here tend to steer
clear of open source - Apache being something of an exception. They don't
trust it.

They also like standards. I think that's CF's weakest point from a
marketing point of view is that it's seen as a proprietary, closed
solution.

I believe CF's move to Java will be a big help in this respect.

I worked for one company that moved from PHP to Java because they saw Java
as a standard. When they find out how complicated Java systems can be,
maybe they'll be in the market for a rapid web app development tool based
on the Java platform

Even though we just touched the subject in another thread i'd like to start
a new one where we "air" our thoughts on the future of CF in Europe since it
seems like CF is a "failure" so far over there!

The reason being that i'm probably moving back to Europe soon and i would
really hate to switch over to ASP/PHP.

Lets put it this way.

I have been doing web development work since coming out of the University of
Bath (for all you Americans, it's an old Roman City in England that has
Roman Bath's in it hence the name) not too many years ago.

Since then I have done HTML then Perl, then CF. As far as I'm concerned the
lack of penetration in CF means that there are not too many developers out
there (although this is increasing). The jobs are there (if you look in the
right places and are good enough) but such is the perceived value of ASP in
the development market that you would find it easier to get an ASP job (and
for that matter a PHP job if you have the skills). However the financial
implications of this here are huge!

Financially it's good to be a CF programmer in the UK - especially a good
one. It's even better to be a Spectra programmer (doesn't really matter how
good yet as long as you've done the course or have experience). Don't be
put off that CF hasn't penetrated the market yet. I firmly believe that it
could (no guarantees), but the worst thing that could happen is that the CF
programmers move away from CF!

RE: Problem w/Frames Netscape

2001-01-08 Thread Philip Arnold - ASP

See what happens if you put in a body tag after the closing /head tag.
Be sure to put in a closing /body tag before /html.

Don't know if this will do it or not. But Netscape is really peculiar with
tables I know - if they aren't just right you will get an empty
 page as you
are describing. Could be the missing body/body tagset.

Just so you know - you don't put body tags around a frameset as they're,
well, frames...

The body tag goes within the noframes tag, but shouldn't ever go around
a frameset

Oh, and NS is very picky about start and end tags, so if you mis-spell an
end tag then the page probably won't display (especially true if you don't
close a /td, /tr or /table)

RE: deleting session variables

We do have one reason for not using session vars.

Clustering.

It takes out the need to worry about the variables being held in memory.

Subject: RE: deleting session variables

On first impression using client and session in the same app
 could be viable if;

 1. client requires accessing client storage while session
"stays within" the CFAS memory space.
 2. if there are vars that need to persist after a session
and that are useful to have readily available for a next
 session
 3. assuming session is faster than client {1]

On second impression the question needs to be answered
whether once client are read if the values also reside
in the CAFS memory space - if so, for how long, and
how granular is the rentention - i.e. assuming storage is
in a db, does one read of any client's vars cause all
client's vars to persist in memory or is the clientmanagement
selective to retrieving just the particular client vars
relative to that client's current session/http request?

If every reference to a client var causes a db read or write,
then I would say that the only reason to mix client and session
is to initialize a client session with client vars, but run the
 session with session vars.

I doubt that client vars are kept in memory for a defined timeout
period (or any other undocumented timeout period other than
possibly applicationtimeout) like session vars so each reference
to a client var will cause a db write or read. That has to mean
session vars, once set, are faster.

I can see an app organized so that upon logIn client vars
in storage are used to intialize the current session, then
these values are moved into a session layer for speed with
any subsequent client value assignments done only for the
purpose of preserving values that need to persist past the
 end of the current session.

I would appreciate any clarification of any of this thinking.
(above is not meant to cover clustering issues and assumes
no design inhibitions due to ram constraints)

Client variables are kept in memory for the duration of the page request.
They're retrieved from the repository for every subsequent page request
(except when they're stored in cookies - there's no retrieval required then,
since the browser simply returns them to the server).

As for using Client variables for initialization of values, I'd argue that
you'd be better off retrieving values from a normalized database structure
(where they usually are anyway for most applications) to populate Session
variables.

The timing is certainly one contribution, but there are a lot more
"cowboys" and "entpreneurs" in the USA who don't insist on buying
only "safe" products.

In Europe, the entire culture, across countries, is a bureaucratic,
standardized, politicized mentality, seeking at all costs (extremely
high, eg, the EC machinery of fraud and waster) to avoid the tiniest
risk or non-compliance, and if the product is not 100% "safe" (ie,
it's not an MS product for an MS strategic platform), the product, eg
CF, is seen as too risky. Is this a conscious orientation? No of
course not. It's like asking fish is they are conscious if water.

RE: Slightly OT: CF in Europe

2001-01-08 Thread Adam Reynolds

I would agree with Paul here. Financially, CF is extremely lucrative in
the UK with rates around 30% higher than ASP.

The reasons are quite simply that ASP is more popular, but anybody that
used to do VB now does ASP, so the market may be bigger, but so is the
recruitment base. This has made ASP consultants cheaper to acquire.

This is also a reason why people use ASP. Europe has been very MS
orientated. If you are already developing using Visual Studio, you
business might as well continue down that development path.

What it doesn't recognise is that CF is inherently faster to develop for
(so I have found) and provides a lot of functionality that you have to
write/purchase yourself for ASP.

Then again, try persuading business people to shell out for Spectra. Not
easy...they cannot see the application development benefits.

One thing though...there is a severe lack of GOOD CF developers in the UK.
It's amazing the number of people that attempt to blag it. If I interview,
I use a simple questionaire that I walk through with the
potential...sometimes it really is quite embarrassing.

I have to agree with this. There are lots and lots and lots of developers
who try to blag it. I have come across many of them and worked for some. I
have worked with developers who have come from HTML (and maybe a little
Javascript), and think that doing the Allaire FastTrack to ColdFusion course
(ie not the advanced course) means know ColdFusion back to front. WRONG!!!
They also don't know anything about mailing lists and the community of
developers which in the Unix/Linux (esp. OpenSource) world is understood and
used to it's full potential. It really does amaze me sometimes how
incredibly naive some people are!

IMHO the most important thing is to know why you do something and what is
happening in the background (something a *nix person would have a massive
headstart on). An example would be the CFHTTP tag. Not understanding HTTP
and it's little intricacies can catch out some normal programmers, but as CF
is such an abstracted language (ie it simplifies everything) - sometimes to
abstracted - some programmers can get caught out. Works well most of the
time, but can be a right (insert favourite expletive here) to debug if
you don't understand what's actually going on.

Paul

PS A potential developer questionnaire like that could well catch out a lot
of people.

PPS Most *nix people love to do everything from the ground up. I don't
advocate this but I do think it is useful to be able to understand why
things are done in certain ways. If it's already built, use that and modify
it. Programmers who are keen to build programmes from the ground up all the
time waste huge amounts of time (IMHO) however, it can be very useful in the
long run.

If you are truly just learning Javascript, a great starting book is
"JavaScript For The World Wide Web 3rd Edition Visual Quickstart Guide" by
Tom Negrino and Dori Smith (Peachpit Press). We've had pretty good luck
with the Visual Quickstart Guides as they teach one thing at a time, fairly
concisely, and step-by-step. For a reference book, I'd recommend
"Javascript, The Definitive Guide" by David Flanagan (O'Reilly). Also, for
a good reference, you might check out

cfloop query="test" startrow="1" endrow="#rows.RecordCount#"

   cfif cfloop.row EQ 1
 We are on row 1
   cfelse cfloop.row GT 1
We are not on row 1
   /cfif

   cfset counter = counter + 1

/cfloop

Since you are looping over a query, I believe that you can use the
queryname.currentrow variable.

RE: Billing Accounting Inventory Management

Depends on the price point. If you're truly talking Peach Tree or
Quickbooks, no. If price is not the main concern, you might check out Sage

Server 7 backend. That might be suitable for integration but the cost is
high.

RE: datasource question

2001-01-08 Thread Benjamin S. Rogers

The hostname is actually the datasource name. This is usually chosen by the
hosting company so you will need to contact them and ask them what the
datasource name is. You will also want to check and verify that you are
using username and password.

In any case when you've figured it out, your CFQUERY tag will look something
like this:

cfset Username="MyUsername"
cfset Password="PaSsw0rD"
cfset Datasource="MyDatasourceName"

cfquery
name="members"
datasource"#Datasource#"
username="#Username#"
password="#Password#"
/cfquery

Some ColdFusion hosts will set it up in a manner that you will not need to
provide the username/password in each of your CFQUERY tags. This is
dependent on the ColdFusion host so you should check with them to see if
this is the case.

Subject: datasource question

I am new to coldfusion and have my site internetcraftfair.com that doesn't
have coldfusion on the server. The sister of my server has coldfusion and
has been kind enough to set me up a temporary location so I can code some
pages for possible employment.

Well I have coded the page and sent it up to the sister server but I am not
sure how to point it to access my database on my site's server. I have been
using perl to connect to my database on my site with DBI and I make a
database string that I send to the server in a variable. I have tried to
form a database type of string with the CFSET functions setting the
username,
password, and hostname. I am not sure of the syntax of it though or if I am
suppose to use my site "internetcraftfair.com" as the host or the server
"topchoice.com".

To access my database on my server through telenet my root folder on
internetcraftfair.com is client/home/internetcraftfair and then I type in
mysql to access the database and send my username and password in to access
it.

cfset username="name"
cfset password="password"
cfset hostname="???" should this be internetcraftfair.com or do I need to
specify my root directory ?
cfquery name="members" datasource"
#hostname#,internetcraftfair,#name#,#password#" do I use commas or colons
in
this string?

I am having a hard time accessing the temp folder on the web and hope to
hear back from radiant in the morning so I can view my code on the web. I
would appreciate any help on this you can suggest.

Thanks--

SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JAVASCRIPT"
function open_window(URL) {
var popup = window.open(URL, "popup_win",
"TOOLBAR=NO,SCROLLBARS=YES,WIDTH=500,HEIGHT=370");
}
/SCRIPT

then:

A HREF="javascript:open_window('userid.html')"User ID/A

hack it up to get what you want, but the window.open function will get you
more compatibility with older browsers.

BlankHello -- anyone know what this error refers to?

ODBC Error Code = 07001 (Wrong number of parameters)

It started appearing in an app we are working on, we searched the code for
anything referring to "count" and there is nothing, and certainly not a
field in the database named COUNT. We naturally assumed it had something to
do with that particular app, then it started appearing in another one. Any
ideas? (using CF 4.5 with MS Access)

Strange output phenomenon

2001-01-08 Thread Dave Wilson

Hi All,

Got a really strange problem here with Paragraphformat

Scenario:

A user enters a list of names into a form field (textarea field in this
case), which is then parsed so as to enter the names into an Access
field using the Paragraphformat function in CF.

i.e. user inputs:

Dave1
Dave2
Dave3
Dave4
Dave5

Which becomes

Dave1 pDave2 pDave3 pDave4 p Dave5

In Access field - Thus far so good

However, when outputting the prior user inputs above, simply using

cfoutput
#query.fieldname#
/cfoutput

I am getting
Dave
Dave2
Dave
Dave4
Dave5

(Notice the missing "3" and "1")

I've also tried this with various different inputs, leading to an
interesting result as demonstrated below

INPUT:

openwin might be a newer function (not sure). try this though;

SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JAVASCRIPT"
function open_window(URL) {
var popup = window.open(URL, "popup_win",
"TOOLBAR=NO,SCROLLBARS=YES,WIDTH=500,HEIGHT=370");
}
/SCRIPT

then:

A HREF="javascript:open_window('userid.html')"User ID/A

hack it up to get what you want, but the window.open function will get you
more compatibility with older browsers.

RE: Slightly OT: CF in Europe

2001-01-08 Thread Benjamin S. Rogers

And what makes Java less proprietary than C++? Last I heard, Sun pulled it
from the standards committee. Suggesting that Java would be opened up, was
one maneuver in Sun's marketing campaign to regain market share lost to Open
Source alternatives to their products:

http://www.wired.com/news/topstories/0,1287,19413,00.html

In fact, if the language that your application server was written in had
anything to do with the "openness" of the application server, being written
in C++ would make ColdFusion far more open. But, of course, the language the
server is written in has little to nothing to do with the openness of the
server itself.

When they find out how complicated Java systems can be,
maybe they'll be in the market for a rapid web app development tool based
on the Java platform

seems like CF is a "failure" so far over there!

The reason being that i'm probably moving back to Europe soon and i would
really hate to switch over to ASP/PHP.

RE: Using .xls datasource

2001-01-08 Thread Philip Arnold - ASP

Can someone point me in the right direction to find information
 on using an
Excel file as a CF datasource? I've got a highly formatted Excel
spreadsheet that my client would like to be able to
 add/update/delete lines
 through his browser.

OK, a few of quick pointers;
Table names are strange to call - [$tableName] (or maybe the other way
round)
Column names MUST be supplied
Columns types are decided at the opening of the table - thus if Excel
decides that it's a Text field, then all numeric types are ignored (and the
other way round)
Once ODBC gets hold of an Excel sheet, it won't let go - CF needs to be
stopped and started to release the file

I would suggest running it via an Access Link table, it means you can
down/up load the file as you require

BTW, \ is backslash and / is slash

As long as you're not going to use FORMs and your template is always
index.cfm, then this is fine

You can strip out the items after the real URL by using either CGI.Path_Info
or CGI.Script_Name (depending on your server)
With this it gives you the complete list after the directory

Then write some looping code to build the variables - I prefer to use = in
the url so that I can see which variable breaks to which (easier to read),
but you can do it without easily enough using ListFirst() and ListGetAt(,2)

Hi All,

Got a really strange problem here with Paragraphformat

Scenario:

A user enters a list of names into a form field (textarea field in this
case), which is then parsed so as to enter the names into an Access
field using the Paragraphformat function in CF.

i.e. user inputs:

Dave1
Dave2
Dave3
Dave4
Dave5

Which becomes

Dave1 pDave2 pDave3 pDave4 p Dave5

In Access field - Thus far so good

However, when outputting the prior user inputs above, simply using

cfoutput
#query.fieldname#
/cfoutput

I am getting
Dave
Dave2
Dave
Dave4
Dave5

(Notice the missing "3" and "1")

I've also tried this with various different inputs, leading to an
interesting result as demonstrated below

INPUT:
Dave12345
Dave12345
Dave101
Dave245
Dave

RETURNS:
Dave
245
Dave
245
Dave
0
Dave245
Dave

(As you may notice, the "1" and "3" are being treated as BR tags?)

System Environment:
NT4 SP6, CF4.01 Enterprise, MS Access datasource

Anybody ever seen this before or have any idea what's going on?

OT: Bandwidth and SQL Server questions

2001-01-08 Thread Bud

Sorry for the OT post. You guys are my bestest resource. :)

I just bumped up my server to a T-1 where I colo. This outfit has
been a little less that honest with me, although I've really been
happy with the performance of their network. I have over 100 sites
(mostly small static sites) running on a 512K and it's performed very
well. Is there a way to test if I've really got a T-1? I've got a
customer who's signed a contract with a large company who is going to
have about 200 employees accessing his application and just want to
be sure I really have a T-1. Then at least if I start bogging down I
can look at more bandwidth.

On another note. I'm about ready to make the plunge into a new SQL
Server box. That should break me for another year. LOL

Right now I've got a firewall and the big Dell. I've got an extra
Dual port NIC on the Dell. I should be OK just connecting a crossover
cable right from the Dell to the SQL Server box, right? When I get
enough cash for a separate mail server also, I'll get a switch,
unless y'all think I'd be better off with one now. Any
recommendations on a decent/cheapish 1U rack mountable switch?

Thanks a bunch.

I outputted the total record count for each query in the following way:

CFMAIL and hair loss

2001-01-08 Thread Aidan Whitehall

I'm having problems building an HTML e-mail in one template and passing it
back as a variable to the calling template to then send it.

The GenerateInvoice tag builds the Invoice as a webpage, ready to send with
CFMAIL and TYPE="HTML". That bit works fine. If you output
#variables.Invoice# to the page, you get a page that displays as expected
and that HTMLValidator says is OK.

CFMODULE
   TEMPLATE="/customtags/GenerateInvoice.cfm"
   InvoiceID="#variables.InvoiceID#"
   Format="HTML"

CFMAIL
   TO="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
   FROM="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
   SUBJECT="Invoice"
   TYPE="HTML"#variables.Invoice#/CFMAIL

Running the template produces a blank HTML e-mail which (if you do View
Source in Outlook) appears to have no content. The To, From and Subject
Fields are fine.

If you delete TYPE="HTML" and set variable.Invoice in GenerateInvoice to any
old rubbish, it works fine.

Does anyone have any ideas what might be happening? GenerateInvoice is
below...

Thanks if you can offer any advice.

RE: remote server response

2001-01-08 Thread Jeff Sarsoun

Jennifer,

I'm finishing up a CFX tag that will do what you need. Right now what you
can do is write a script that will parse through your templates extracting
out http, ftp, or mailto: tags. You can dump these into a table then as a
scheduled task you could cfx_http to the address to get the response code
from the server, then not show the link if it returns anything other than
200 and send you an email to let you know.

Subject: remote server response

I'm looking for ideas because I'm not sure how to go about this. I'm
setting up some pages that are going to have links to external sites. I
know how bad it looks to have broken links so I'd like to check the links
on a schedule and remove any links that are broken. I'll still get some
broken inks but it's better than using up my server resources checking
links every time a page loads. At any rate, I'm not sure quite how to check
the links in the way I'd like to. I'm considered trying
CFHTTP method="get" ... throwonerror="yes"
but I'm not sure that it will do what I want it to do. In some cases I want
to make sure that the server is responding (because I don't have a specific
file to point to) and in some cases I want to make sure there isn't a 404
error (because I do have a specific file to point to). This would probably
work for a 404 error but frankly, I didn't understand the section of the
CFML Language Reference that talked about whether a filename is required
for CFHTTP. To be honest, I don't even want to get the file-- I just want
to make sure it is available. I don't have access to these servers so I
can't put a dummy file on the server to get to make sure the server is
responding.

Is there a better way to do this that I'm missing? Ideas?

Subject: OT: Bandwidth and SQL Server questions

I think Danny Goodman's JavaScript Bible is also fantastic. The thing I
appreciate most is the painstaking research he did on what differences there
are among browsers and versions.

Ideas?

Hierarchial Display

2001-01-08 Thread Joe Sheble aka Wizaerd

I am able to retrieve hierarchial data just fine using a nested custom tag,
and this tag populates a query for me with the data. However, I'm having a
real problem with trying to figure out how to display it. Here's an
example of the data:

0325 - Thomas - Graf -
0645 - Robert - Nudo - 0325
1392 - Joseph - Sheble - 0325
0937 - Kimberly - Walters - 1392
0674 - Lisa - Perez - 0937
1450 - Jerome - Horowitz - 0325

And I'd like it displayed thus:

0325 - Thomas - Graf -
- 0645 - Robert - Nudo - 0325
- 1392 - Joseph - Sheble - 0325
 0937 - Kimberly - Walters - 1392
 0674 - Lisa - Perez - 0937
- 1450 - Jerome - Horowitz - 0325

However, there's no limit to the hierachy depth... any ideas?

Why not get the custom tag to populate a tree structure instead of a
query? Then you can write another recursive custom tag to display the

I recently ran across a sweat application that generated an org chart. What
is so sweat is that the Hierarchial data is housed in a XML doc ... and then
XSL parser recursively transforms the data with embedded VML to handle
the graphical framework.

And it executes at the client! The only files sent from the server are the
XML document which references the XSL definition.

Of course this is MSXML 2.0/IE 5 client based.

I can't wait until the next time I need a tree structure GUI.

Re: aliasing using cfmail

2001-01-08 Thread Howie Hamlin

Some mail servers are more strict than others. Some validate only the email
addresses in the protocol and some actually parse the mail headers and check
those for validity. However, bottom line, if you want to make sure that you
are compliant 100% of the time your address needs to be the way I mentioned
before (in both the protocol and headers). What I mean by the protocol is
when you use the TO and FROM parameters of CFMail.

Howie

CFHEADER

It seems the following won't work, well in at least IE5.5.

CFHEADER NAME="Content-Disposition"
VALUE="attachment;filename=#attributes.fname#"
CFCONTENT TYPE="application/pdf" FILE="#fnp#"

It instead opens the page up for download instead of the file. So lets say
I have peter.pdf as my attributes.fname and download.cfm is the page the
above code is on. And lets say that it's called from index.cfm. Well
index.htm appears in the download file box, not peter.pdf. It seems to work
ok in Netscape, so I can't believe I'm the only one having this problem.
I've seen similar looking code on the Allaire site, but it's still not
working. Can anyone help with this?

RE: Hierarchial Display

2001-01-08 Thread Joe Sheble aka Wizaerd

Wat do you mean by a tree structure?

At 05:51 PM 1/8/01 +, you wrote:
Why not get the custom tag to populate a tree structure instead of a
query? Then you can write another recursive custom tag to display the
data much more easily.

Subject: Hierarchial Display

I am able to retrieve hierarchial data just fine using a nested custom tag,
and this tag populates a query for me with the data. However, I'm having a
real problem with trying to figure out how to display it. Here's an
example of the data:

0325 - Thomas - Graf -
0645 - Robert - Nudo - 0325
1392 - Joseph - Sheble - 0325
0937 - Kimberly - Walters - 1392
0674 - Lisa - Perez - 0937
1450 - Jerome - Horowitz - 0325

And I'd like it displayed thus:

0325 - Thomas - Graf -
- 0645 - Robert - Nudo - 0325
- 1392 - Joseph - Sheble - 0325
 0937 - Kimberly - Walters - 1392
 0674 - Lisa - Perez - 0937
- 1450 - Jerome - Horowitz - 0325

However, there's no limit to the hierachy depth... any ideas?
