RE: cfm-resources.com

2001-03-15 Thread Michael Kear

The owner of cfm-resources has just hired a system admin, a friendly and
helpful guy called Tito who seems to be on top of things.

To be honest I don't know how they're doing this - they've upgraded their
hardware several times because of the phenomenal growth and I don't know
who's payng the bills. They say they just want to give something back to
the developer community, and they're using surplus bandwidth they have
for other things.

I know it seems too good to be true, and usually things that seem too good
to be true really are, but in this case try as I might, I can't find any
ulterior motive or any place they're getting money somehow. My
suggestion is, use them. Go for it. BUt just don't ruin it for everyone
by being too demanding and causing them to call it all off.

Cheers,

Re: cfm-resources.com

2001-03-15 Thread Michael Kear

Yes, I have two sites there, and I have trouble believing it too. But
you oughtn't to go looking gift horses in the mouth. As far as I can
see, it's been going and growing like crazy for ages, and there's no sign
of a catch, no matter how hard I look for one.

It's perfect for the two society sites I have there. They're impoverished
societies, and I can give them a fully dynamic site that goes far further
than anything they could hope for on any other basis.

CFContent file download problem

2001-03-15 Thread Eron Cohen

I use CFcontent all the time and haven't had any
problems for a long time. Recently I have been
attempting to institute it as part of a fusebox site
with frames to download some hidden files. When a
user clicks the link that triggers the CFCONTENT
download, for some reason, two files must be
downloaded first, before the one that I am intending
for them to download. One of them is the name of the
file that creates the frames for the site and the
other is a UUID that's part of the calling URL. The
fuseaction that calls the file that contains CFcontent
goes through the usual app_globals and index.cfm
before it gets to the one that contains the code in
question:

I am on ColdFusion 4.5.1 Enterprise, Windows 2000.

Thanks,

RE: White space

2001-03-15 Thread Scott, Andrew

I agree on the savings that it can achieve, but again at what cost.

If it ends up adding (and yes I have seen this) say 2000 ms in a very big
site that has hundreds of cfm files. Would this 2 seconds be better of
getting the information to the client, than trying to remove whitespace!

But as Philip said it is personal preference:-)

I'm personally of the opinion that if the server runs the templates faster,
then you can serve more users - if they have to wait a fraction of a second
longer, so what?

I'd rather serve 200 pages a second than 150 (or whatever the figures are)

cfinclude security

Does anyone know of a work around for cfinclude in a shared hosting
environment? Maybe a few guidelines?
Because, if there is a way to limit a top root directory for cfinclude, it
is not obvious to me...

Actually writing this, I had a thought. Is it feasible to run the CFServer
as a user who does not have permissions in certain directories but otherwise
is an administrator?

Luckily, you do not have to. There are many written in Java or that have
been compiled in C++ as COM objects. Many of these will work in ColdFusion.
The obvious choice, if you are working in a Windows environment, is the
MSXML COM object that is installed with every installation of Internet
Explorer 5 or greater. If find COM objects too difficult, have a look at
SiteObjects' MSXML wrapper, CF_SOXML.

http://www.siteobjects.com/index.cfm?fuseAction=showProducts

> So, short summary - there are no existing CF parsers for XML (that I know

There are none that I know of that are written in CFML but that only makes
sense since both are a markup language. As you've suggested, you really
wouldn't want to parse a markup language with another markup language. But,
as mentioned above, there are several really good XML parsers which are
available to ColdFusion developers via COM, JAVA, etc.

> what are the advantages of using XML with my coldfusion web apps? like
what
> cool stuff can I do? and is XML hard to learn?

As to the original question, there are quite a few immediate uses for XML.
For instance, you can separate content from display. This is done by using
ColdFusion to query a database to create a XML template on the fly or query
an XML document repository and applying an appropriate XSL template.

This gives you the ability to change the design of the site on the fly
depending on the browser (WML/WAP enabled phone, text reader, TV,
traditional, etc.) without having to maintain several different versions of
the site. This, of course, is just one example but one that is being used
quite frequently by ColdFusion developers.

Another way to integrate XML into your sites would be through WDDX, which is
built right into ColdFusion. You can use WDDX or even XML itself to
syndicate content. That is what has been done with the MoreOver.com news
feeds for example.

In my opinion, XML is much more difficult to learn than HTML because it is
designed for the parser rather than the developer. It is case sensitive, is
very strict in regards to syntax, and requires a more abstract approach. It
also requires a knowledge of DTDs, and if you are going to generate Web
pages from XML, a knowledge of XSL and XSLT will be necessary. These are all
hurdles to overcome if you come from an HTML background.

Luckily, there are already tools like those mentioned above that hide quite
a bit of the logic and make our jobs as developers much easier; and the
tools will only get better.

Re: Control Panels for Remote Administration of Datasources for multiple clients

2001-03-15 Thread Jon Hall

I am currently working on something very similar to the below app. I am
using a combination of IHTK from Lewis Sellers, cfregistry for datasources,
and using cfexecute to call the command line Imail programs for email stuff,
and cffile to write out dns files. Of course mine isn't as pretty ;-)

As far as security, I would never give a developer I did not trust to any of
these tools. For the general population, I would probably implement some
kind of queuing function. Where the program records all of the data needed
first, then an administrator reviews the changes and sumbits the job and the
program runs through and does the changes on the servers.

Brian,

The custom tag CF_SOXML is very easy to use and relies on the MSXML parser,
which almost any up-to-date Windows server will have. You only have to pass
it a few parameters -- the xml file, the xsl file, and the desired action.

Re: atomz Search for Dynamic site

2001-03-15 Thread Lanny R. Udey

We use Atomz but we use the following type of URLs so the search engines spider the
site properly. Most search engines have a problem with URL parameters after a "?".

http://www.hofstra.edu/Academics/index_Academics.cfm/type/dn/link/Academics

We do have a few pages with URL parameters and these are not spider properly by Atomz
spider. Since we don't really need to index these we exclude them.

If you want to write me off-line I will send you how we do the links as above.

Also, Atomz tech support is great. They may have a way to set up the spider to accept
url variables - if you find out please let me know.

Can anybody give me some info on how they set up an Atomz index for a
dynamic site?

I have a coldfusion site using fusebox method that uses for all links and heavy use of url parameters with case values.

I set up an Atomz.com index of a fusebox site with the entry point as
domain/index.cfm

Atomz.com only indexes the display files called by the default fuseaction,
but does not follow the in the dsp files.

I know that people have said they did this successfully-can I get a reality

Any thoughts as to why I can't do this? If I do not supply a password, it

No, there's no way to prevent this for carts built this way, except to
change the code so that it doesn't work this way.

Any data from the browser is subject to tampering. You can't rely on
HTTP_REFERER - that's sent by the browser, and thus subject to the same sort
of tampering as the form fields.

When I teach the Allaire Advanced CF Development class, I typically do a
demonstration of this exact thing using the sample (intentionally unsecure)
application, and it usually gets a big rise out of the class.

RE: cfm-resources.com

The service is not the highest quality, but you get what
you pay for. But it's a legit operation. The guy that runs it,
Pablo is doing a great job. He's giving a great opportunity
to beginning coders with low budgets (like me) to write code
and be able to preview their work. How many teenagers do you
know that could afford CF Server software? I bet it's not easy to
get a bootleg copy of it either. If you decide to host with
CFM Resources be prepared to see your site down once in a
while. Personally, I think it's worth it.

RE: XML

2001-03-15 Thread John Wilker

Couldn't you just interface with a COM object? like Microsoft's XML parser?
I've only played with it a little bit outside CF, but was able to read XML
files and such. It's also free (dl from the site, plus I think IE 5.5 comes
with version 3 of the parser).

I don't do much with XML at this point so I'm only tossing that idea out
there.

OK - different subject, so I'm following with a different email:

Let me point out a very good reason NOT to use CF for XML. When you get
XML, you have to compare it to your DTD and then parse it to get the data
out. I'm not sure about you, but writing a parser as complex as this in CF
doesn't sit very high on the list of things I want to do.

On the other hand, there are plenty of Java (and other languages) XML
parsers out there. The apache organization maintains a very nice one called
"xerces" which is seeing a lot of use. I think Sun may also distribute
their own version of an XML parser.

So, short summary - there are no existing CF parsers for XML (that I know
of...if I'm wrong, someone please correct me). Handling XML is pretty
process intensive, and lets be honest, thats not really CF's strong point.

I'm using them for my personal site. It's been going well for a while, but
you definitely have a case of "you get what you pay for". I'm using their
free service.

The one comment that I have to say is that the owner (and he's the only
admin) is definitely doing his best to keep everything going.

I use them for several sites. I wouldn't recommend them for anything

Re: exploiting shopping carts

2001-03-15 Thread Tony Schreiber

On my shopping cart program, I don't pass prices around. It works like
this:

You get a CartID as a session variable. Anything in your shopping cart is
in the CartPart table with that ID and ProductID, Qty and any Options
(size, color). When you order, the CartParts are moved into OrderParts and
the current price (regular, sale, whatever) is stored in the OrderParts
table. The price of the item is never passed around anywhere. The only
thing sensitive exposed is the CartID and once moved into the order stage,
that's secured with the username/password of the customer...

In fact, I built my whole cart with out forms, using all gets insteads.
The only post is at the end. Made making links and quantity changes easy.

RE: exploiting shopping carts

2001-03-15 Thread Robert Everland

What I do is this. The only fields I pass are the products Id, so when I go
to the add to cart page I do another query that gets the price again and
then I make that a client variable. Little more processing but my car would
be safe from price tricking.

Hey all,

I just got this article today about how people are exploiting shopping cart
logic to change prices and essentially stealing products. After some testing
on my own carts I have been able to exploit some of them by building a form
with all there required hidden fields and modifying there values. Of course
this wouldn't be a problem if they weren't sending pricing information as a
hidden variable but many of them do. Do you guys have any recommendation for
preventing this on carts built this way? I've thought of checking the
http_referer to make sure the request comes from the same domain the site is

attached the address to the article for you all to read.

I am having the worst time trying to figure out why the last query( See
Below ) in this chain of if statements is not working. The error that I am
getting from the CFServer when I try to execute the last query is:

Message: ODBC Error Code = 37000 (Syntax error or access violation)
Detail: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Error converting data
type varchar to numeric.

The query is being populated from a form and all the other queries are
working except for the last one (However all the queries are working in the
MS Query Analyzer when hard coded with data). I have done a to
check what type of data is being input into the query, but the data is
correct! Anyone have an idea as to why this last query is not working?

Thanks in advance.

Cold fusion has top line blank.......

2001-03-15 Thread Richard Kuryk

We have two server and on one server with cf4.5sp2 the text "COLD FUSION
BLOWS" appears on the very top line of the source but on another server with
cf4.5sp1 "COLD FUSION BLOWS" appears a line down. The exact same source.
This doesn't seem like a big deal but my xml/xsl parser flips out if is not on the first line. I have all pasted the source
below and it is a single line file. Any thoughts on how I can fix this?

Sorry about the knock to cold fusion but I have been banging my head all day
on this one!

Thanks you

RE: XML

2001-03-15 Thread bflynn

RE: enumerating variables

2001-03-15 Thread Aaron Johnson

hi Richard,

I'm pretty sure that you can't, but for good reason. Many people use CF in a
shared environment. If you could enumerate server, client & variables, you
could see *every* server client & variable that every person is using on the
server.. :) I admit, that would be fun, but most likely will not be
available anytime soon.

With my debug script I can enumerate most system variables thus:

#struct# variables:

#var#:

A structure

An array

A query

#structfind(evaluate(struct),var)#

#struct# not defined

But

server.variables, client.variables and variables.variables don't seem to
be accessible at all in the method above or any other 'automated' way
(try adding them to structlist); - is there a way of enumerating them
all at the end of a page?

Re: Code review PLEASE

2001-03-15 Thread Mike

I took out the max rows, and reposted it and everything works fine, well
kinda fine, the only dilema now is that once you go past the last record it
show's a blank page, and vice versa for the first page if you scroll back,
so now I am trying to figure that one out, thank you to all that answered.

Re: Form Fields cleared on Back

2001-03-15 Thread Deanna L. Schneider

Hiya Philip,
I did a little testing, and the issue (at least for me) was the direction of
the slash.

So:
variables.thisTemplateName=ListLast(CGI.CF_TEMPLATE_PATH,"/");

Is fine, while:
variables.thisTemplateName=ListLast(CGI.CF_TEMPLATE_PATH,"\");

Pulls the local file structure (as there is not occurence of the list
delimiter, it pulls the whole thing). (Same thing happens on our production
server.)

Re: Code review PLEASE

2001-03-15 Thread Jon Hall

Mike do a little debugging on the host. What is the value of #nextid# and
#previd# on the page? When you click next on the host, does it show the
first record everytime? Does the url always say default2.cfm?ID=2 ?
If so, it's obvious that the sql statement is not picking up the url
variable and probably is only picking up the cfparam variable.

Try scoping your variables just to make sure. If this isn't the problem it
is always a good idea to scope variables, it makes the code a little easier
to read later on, and it executes faster.

SELECT ID, EmpCandidate, SKillBackground, Status, Recruiter, Profile
FROMinterview
WHERE ID=#url.id#

Notice no pound signs within the cfsets, it is again easier to read and
executes slightly faster.

One problem I see is that you are relying the ID to be sequential in the
database. If you delete a record, eventually you will run into a query that
has no record and shows a blank page.
I think a better way to do all this if the user does not have the ability to
edit records, would be to cache the query and use startrow and maxrow in
your cfoutput. Like so...

SELECT ID, EmpCandidate, SKillBackground, Status, Recruiter, Profile

Data here

Previous
Next

This will work even without caching, but might as well make it quicker.

RE: XML

2001-03-15 Thread bflynn

I think everyone has done a pretty good job of describing what XML is and
what it can do. Let me add one comment on the difference between HTML and
XHTML: XHTML is really just stricter HTML. Tags that are opened must be
closed and must be properly nested. Thats pretty much the most significant
rules. I misremember right now, but it seems there was to be something
about stricter controls over how tables get displayed too...maybe that was a
different XML child.

Because XHTML is a subset of XML, it can be validated exactly by using a
DTD. A DTD is just an XML document which descibes how things can be put
together. A DTD is a lot like a regular grammer. With a few minor
exceptions, you're probably already writing XHTML.

Some quick examples: In HTML, this is legal (OK, it doesn't even make sense,
I'm just demostrating):

  A
  B

In XHTML, its not - The option and BR statments are never closed and the
table and paragraph marks are not nested correctly.

  A
  B

Nested Query

2001-03-15 Thread Michael S. Kimmett

I am having the worst time trying to figure out why the last query( See Below ) in
this chain of if statements is not working. The error that I am getting from the
CFServer when I try to execute the last query is:

Message: ODBC Error Code = 37000 (Syntax error or access violation)
Detail: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]Error converting data type
varchar to numeric.

The query is being populated from a form and all the other queries are working except
for the last one (However all the queries are working in the MS Query Analyzer when
hard coded with data). I have done a to check what type of data is being
input into the query, but the data is correct! Anyone have an idea as to why this
last query is not working?

Thanks in advance.

exploiting shopping carts

2001-03-15 Thread Rick Lamb

I've thought of checking the
http_referer to make sure the request comes from the same domain the site is
in but I'm not sure there isn't a better solution that I'm missing. I've
attached the address to the article for you all to read.

RE: Broken Images / Testing for file existence - JS to the rescue

2001-03-15 Thread ron

Tony,

Let the client-side box do the work, with JavaScript. Here's a demo page
that tests for the presence of an image, and swaps the missing image with a
default image... I'm sure you can modify it to your needs:

Image Not Found Test

Tested with IE and NS v4+ on PC; even if it doesn't work on other browsers,
it shouldn't break anything since they'll just ignore the event handler.

A big thanks to Jeff Howden at evolt.org for pointing out the onError event
handler for tags to me initially.

enumerating variables

2001-03-15 Thread Richard Meredith-Hardy

With my debug script I can enumerate most system variables thus:

#struct# variables:

#var#:

A structure

An array

A query

#structfind(evaluate(struct),var)#

#struct# not defined

But

server.variables, client.variables and variables.variables don't seem to
be accessible at all in the method above or any other 'automated' way
(try adding them to structlist); - is there a way of enumerating them
all at the end of a page?

RE: Regular expression help

2001-03-15 Thread Douglas Malcolm

Leaves table tags in:

([[:alpha:]]|[[:s
pace:]]|[[:punct:]])+','')#>

Removes table tags:

([[:alpha:]]|[[:s
pace:]]|[[:punct:]])+','')#>

Note that the default attribute for scope is "one", so the above snippet
will only remove the first instance it finds of table tags. Change the
scope to "all" if you want them all gone.

Of course, if you only want one very specific table tag set to be removed,
you'll have to find it another way (adding some other unique text for the
regexp to look for).

Help for a regular expression idiot.

I'm looking to remove all the characters between two tags:

example

(removing the tags themselves would be a plus)

The problem isn't with maxrows, it's with ID. the cfparam statement isn't
finding it so it sets it to the default of one.

RE: Custom Tag

2001-03-15 Thread Dave Watts

> page and reference it that way in the tag?

Yes, you could. However, from a best practices perspective, you'd want to be
careful about doing that, as the Request scope is shared by all scripts
within a single request.

Ideally, when you write a custom tag, you write it so that it's
self-contained: all of the data it needs are contained within attributes,
and all the return values are created using variable names specified by the
caller. While the Request scope is handy for deeply-nested and recursive
custom tags, using that scope as a shared area between custom tag and
calling page violates the self-containment mentioned above.

Re: Code review PLEASE

2001-03-15 Thread Deanna L. Schneider

Mike,
You can still use my previous post- it's set for 5 records at a time, but
just change the maxrows attribute to 1.

But, do this: output the recordcount of your query (without the maxrows
attribute). See if for some reason your database is only returning one row.

RE: Code review PLEASE

2001-03-15 Thread Douglas Malcolm

Michael,

What error are you getting when not-local?

Your code looks fine to me, I'm wondering if this bit is 100% correct
though:

Since it works fine the first time, the problem has got to be "after" the
first pass through, right? Try making sure that ID is a not a string, and
is in fact a number after you increment it.

Re: Code review PLEASE

2001-03-15 Thread David E. Crawford

Well, how many records are you going to have in the table for a particular
ID? If ID is the unique, primary key, the first time you run it, it selects
the record for ID=1, and gives you "prior" and "next" links for ID=0 and
ID=2. The maxrows issue is a smokescreen to your real problem. Check to
see what the value of ID is each time to make sure things are happening the
way you want them to. If there are gaps in in your ID values, you will also
have issues, as well as the fact that it is doubtful that you would have an
ID of 0.

Re: Code review PLEASE

2001-03-15 Thread Deanna L. Schneider

Are you trying to have the user page through one record at a time? Cause
that's what you're going to get with this. You'll only ever get one user
whose id equals the passed id
---snip---> WHERE ID=#ID#

What I think you want is something like the following (quickly cut from
existing code, so probably needs cleanup).

SELECT ID, EmpCandidate, SKillBackground, Status, Recruiter, Profile
FROMinterview

I have. The # marks need to be around Form.GroupList else the value of
ListID comes out as "Form.GroupList" in the insert query.

Actually, what I sent before was the last iteration of my attempts (heck, I
was trying everything I could think of :). Here's a simplified form:

insert into Messages (ListID, From, Subject, MsgBody)
  values(#i#, '#form.from#', '#form.subject#', '#form.msgbody#')

It still bombs out.

> 3, is ListID an AutoNumber? If so, you can't insert into it

No, see my previous reply.

> 4, if "i" is a value, why are you using Val(i) - it'll slow the server up
> some

Not worried about that right now. I have tried it without Val around the
"i". No difference.

> 5, ensure that your fields don't have apostrophies in them by using
> Replace(form.field,"'","''","all") - SQL will spit otherwise

They don't have apostrophies.

Still scratching my head. Thanks.

I'm looking to remove all the characters between two tags:

It pulls the template path using ListLast(CGI.CF_TEMPLATE_PATH,"\"), and it
posts back to that - theoretically it can't do anything else...

Can you View Source for me - all of my testing went fine for this...

1, read Ben Forta's "To # or not to #"

Philips Edit Form

2001-03-15 Thread Deanna L. Schneider

Cool, Philip. I'm going to have to play with this some more, but my only
initial comments would be:

1. give an example of usage in the docs
2. On my system, the variable for the filename to submit to is pulling the
local file system, as opposed to the web address. I haven't dug through the
code at all to see if this something in your code, or if it's an oddity with
our development server.

Howdy,

This should be an easy one and I'm a bit embarassed to ask about it, but I'm
not seeing something.

I want to loop over a list of numbers and do a query Insert Into for each
item in the list. This is what I have:

(Form.GroupList is a list of numbers, e.g., 5,7,6,3,8,2,1,4)

insert into Messages (ListID, From, Subject, MsgBody)
values(#Val(i)#, '#form.from#', '#form.subject#', '#form.msgbody#')

(the form.from, form.subject, and form.msgbody fields will be the same for
each insertion)

I'm getting a syntax error:

Diagnostic error message: ODBC Error Code = 37000 (Syntax error or access
violation)

[Microsoft][ODBC Microsoft Access Driver] Syntax error in INSERT INTO
statement.

SQL = "insert into Messages (ListID, From, Subject, MsgBody) values(5, 'Joe
Blow', 'Test', 'enter email message here this is a test')"

Using MS Access to do this. What am I not seeing?

TIA,

It sounds like your (Larry's) requirement is to log the activity, which may
be easier to do from the application serving the page versus an external

Assuming that you're running and hosting a developing the chat room, you
might contact the author of ralfchat and see if there is a logging feature
