Yet another reason why I hate Netscape

2001-09-20 Thread t nelson

Hi all,

I am working on an application which uses some a session variables. It works
perfectly in IE (of course), however when I try to load the exact same
page(s) in netscape the variable does not exist. I even went so far as to
write a couple of simple test pages.

All they do is set a session variable then pass it to another page. Again I
tried it in IE and it works fine but then when I tried it in netscape, the
variable doesn't exist.

Here is my session variable:

I know that I can pass variables to subsequent pages in a number of
different ways. However, my question is: Do session variables simply not
work in Netscape? If they do work is there some setting/syntax I am
forgetting or should be examining?

If this helps I am using both Netscape Navigator(4.08) and Netscape(6).

Thanks in advance,

Nelson

Carlo,

ListContains works correctly as described in the Language reference. For
what you want, check out ListFind and ListFindNoCase.

RE: I've lost a week's work!!!

2001-09-20 Thread Andrew Scott

Which is why, this doesn't sound so silly! After going through that a
few times myself, I ended up putting SourceSafe into place even on a
single user development. Even if you loose only a days work, is better
than a week as a day is much more fresher in your memory.

I think studio 5.0 has a nice feature in it that may solve this, not too
sure!

All of my week's work is gone (the file was around 15Kb of code).
I didn't save it in a diffrent location. is there still a place where I

Microsoft Word & Coldfusion

2001-09-20 Thread Ianv2

Hi

I wish to integrate a ms word document within an existing html page using CF. I would
like to display the contents of the word doc within a table in an html page, so it
looks as if it was constructed in HTML.

Is this possible with Coldfusion, if so what is the procedure for achieving the best
result?

Are there any tags or methods to achieve this, apart from COM which relies on either
the user have word installed locally or the server having word installed which is not
an option if you are running on UNIX or LINUX.

Finally are any o the list aware of www.wwvare.com it parses word data and converts it
into html or into a db I think, anyone on the list used this before?

Re: cflocation/javascript

2001-09-20 Thread Tony Schreiber

Another approach is to point the form submission back to the original form
- where the processing is done at the top and if the submission SUCCEEDS
you can cflocate somewhere else. If it fails for whatever reason, the form
is presented again, with non-conforming values removed, but the remaining
fields have their data intact (). This is similar to the way you would use the same form
template for adding and editing a record...

Then you don't have to relay on browser issues at all AND the feedback to
the user is immediate and obvious. Especially when you can highlight the
errors...

You are probably not maintaining state, make sure your cfid and cftoken
are defined on both pages and are actually the same.

RE: Moving from Access to SQL server

2001-09-20 Thread Tilbrook, Peter

SQL probably doesn't like "SELECT * FROM TABLE" - you need to be a bit
more specific about what columns you actually require. If your SQL code
is good you should be able to "upsize" to SQL Server without much
problems.

RE: Yet another reason why I hate Netscape

2001-09-20 Thread Tilbrook, Peter

Not much help I guess, I hate Nutscrape too - it just does weird things
to even standard HTML code.

Rather than using Session variables try using Client variables (stored
in a datasource and NOT the registry) to see if you have better luck.

Subject: Yet another reason why I hate Netscape

Hi all,

I am working on an application which uses some a session variables. It
works
perfectly in IE (of course), however when I try to load the exact same
page(s) in netscape the variable does not exist. I even went so far as
to
write a couple of simple test pages.

All they do is set a session variable then pass it to another page.
Again I
tried it in IE and it works fine but then when I tried it in netscape,
the
variable doesn't exist.

Nelson

What would you espect from an ASP programmer asking for help on a CF
list?

Additionally anywhere he uses this connection he must recode the
connection settings, many of us use much more efficient methods of
accomplishing this (application.cfm for example).

problem using file upload, cffile and cflocation

2001-09-20 Thread Kola Oyedeji

I have come across some wierd behaviour and wondered if anyone else
had run into this. I have a from with a file field which allows a user
to upload an image. On the action page I use the cffile tag to upload
an image which
is saved to a directory and then i cflocate to confirmation page.

Now the image uploads fine BUT when I try to cflocate I just get a
blank screen no debugging output nothing. It as if the page hasnt
finished processing but it stays like that permanently. If I remove
the cflocation at the end of the template It works fine no blank page.

Anyone know why this could be happening?

Thanks in advance

2001-09-20 Thread Matt Robertson

I had this problem when I migrated an existing site to newer code. Drove me
nuts. One thing I did was put CFID and CFTOKEN in the bottom right hand
corner of the page and discovered I was getting a new cfid/cftoken on every
page. From there I found -- and for the life of me I don't know why this
is -- that if I removed SETCLIENTCOOKIES="YES" from the cfapplication
statement that the problem disappeared. The statement wasn't in my older
code, but was in the newer one. Here's the working statement:

Warning: this email contains a blatant plug!

Sounds like a perfect candidate for our tag, cfx_pwtextcrypt. It uses
RSA asymmetric encryption to encrypt the file on the server using the
public key. The client keeps his private key on his own computer. Rather
than download the file via FTP, he could go to a page on the site (which
could be password protected/running through SSL if you want to be really
secure), paste in his private key and decrypt the file. The decrypted
information could then be spat out to cfcontent for the client to
download. The decrypted information is never stored anywhere on the
server except in memory.

While you could do something similar using CF's encrypt function, that's
not really secure because anyone compromising your server would have
everything required to decrypt the files. That's why public key crypto
works so well - the private key and the public key are never kept
together.

Hope that helps - by the way you can get cfx_pwtextcrypt at
http://www.developer.perthweb.com.au if you are interested.

Regards,
Kay.

I'd have to agree with this... I try and stick with the best tool for

CFX tags can also be written in Delphi. There is a Delphi component that
you can use which writes c++ headers for the dll iteself I think... Not
really my area of expertise. But our Delphi programmers have made quite
a few CFX tags without any problems.

Hope that helps,

RE: Yet another reason why I hate Netscape

2001-09-20 Thread Steve Martin

Session vars aren't related to the type of browser you're using. The only
dependency on the browser is that it must perpetuate the cfid and cftoken
values. This is usually done through a cookie. If Nutscrape has cookies
turned off for whatever reason and you are not passing the values from page
to page via the URL then the session vars won't exist on the next page as
the server will have no idea who you are. As a test try outputting
#session.cfid# #session.cftoken# on all your pages. If the numbers change on
each page then the server is issuing new ones as you haven't reminded it
what the first ones were.

RE: Moving from Access to SQL server

2001-09-20 Thread Declan Maher

Heres a good article on upgrading differences.

http://www.elementkjournals.com/sql/0001/sql0011.htm

I also found in my code the following differences:
Access SQL Server
Function
Now() GetDate()
You can use #CreateODBCDate(Now())# around the Now() function and it
will work in both Access and SQL Server

datatype
Yes/No Bit
When converted if you use TRUE/FALSE this will throw an error.
Instead use 1/0 to determine if it should be switched on/off.

Also Delete * from Table needs to be changed to Delete from Table.

SQL probably doesn't like "SELECT * FROM TABLE" - you need to be a bit
more specific about what columns you actually require. If your SQL code
is good you should be able to "upsize" to SQL Server without much
problems.

I'm resending - help

2001-09-20 Thread Michael Lugassy

Resending this, please take a look (haven't got response).

I have a complexed CFM template that output a result page after a long
process. The process includes: connecting to 3-4 diffrent datasources, string
manipulation, math calculations, links, includes, everything...

I though about the following way to cache: Every cfoutput (and other html/js
code) is
store incremently in a cf variable. (upon succesful completion of every
phase).

In the end, I output the result to the user and store that variable in a SQL
table with a UID. Then, the second time a user calls the CFM, I first check
if the output
content is already in SQL, and output it. If the content is not there, or
expired, I simply parse the
CFM from the start.

Any comments on my way to do this?
What is better in this way, store the output content in SQL or a text file
(and then it)?

Michael.

customers email CSV files to company, which is then validated by CF and
entered into the DB).

Any advice appreciated.

CFWDDX problem

2001-09-20 Thread Mike Kear

CFWDDX problem.. What do I do about this? I want to turn a struct into a
WDDX packet, but the name of the struct is dymanic, based on the user id.

The struct is called: application.um.#UmID#_Data

and the CFWDDX tag is as follows:

But that puts the following into the packet:

application.um.Um_F6B94560ADC11
1D583DC0003470B0337_Data

As you can see it hasn't turned the contents of the struct into the WDDX
packet, but just the dynamic name instead. I tried putting a hash before
and after the name, e.g.

but that throws an error.

What am I doing wrong here?

Converting Word and Excel to HTML

Good morning, all

Here is my problem. We have a number of Word and Excel documents that are
currently available on our company Intranet. We have just rolled out the
Intranet, so it is only available at HQ. We are slowly beginning to give
our branches access, but our branch employees generally have thin clients
with IE installed, but no Word or Excel. Therefore, we need to create a
custom tag that takes Word/Excel files and coverts them to HTML.

My first thought is to use the Object models in Word and Excel to do a
simple Save As HTML.

Has anyone done anything like this? Is this a practical solution? I would
think that I would use VBScript to do this. Does anyone have any comments,
war stories, references or resources on this?

I am posting this through email, since our Internet access has been shut
down due to the virus, so if this has been covered ad nauseum, I apologize.

Thanks!

Since UM is a struct, just reference it as: #Application.Um[UmID].Data#

As a general comment - and I've said this before so forgive me for being
an old cranky developer (grin), folks, please do not forget the []
notation for structures. It's perfect for stuff like this.

RE: Converting Word and Excel to HTML

2001-09-20 Thread Mark Smyth

My advise would be to save the word docs as HTML, then make sure the clean
the HTML with dreamweaver (theres an option in dreamweaver to do this),
otherwise the HTML produced (but word at least) is a bit of a nightmare.

Then the HTML you're left with should be more or less workable with, and i
think the same might be possible with excel docs also, but i've never done
that

RE: Microsoft Word & Coldfusion

2001-09-20 Thread Patrick Harkins

Hi:

I am not sure what you are asking. You can always format the document using
nested tables, but it is slow and painful - must be done by hand coded HTML.
As you must know, the built-in Word HTML converter is no good.

If you want to save time on a tool to wite the html for you, I tried the
online demo of OutsideIn-Server a year or so ago and was totally blown away.
The product should be found at www.inso.com, but when i try to go there i
get a 404 error, so perhaps the company is out of business or who knows
what..but things are very wormy today, so it may be a temporary thing.

Hope that helps :)

Hi

I wish to integrate a ms word document within an existing html page using
CF. I would like to display the contents of the word doc within a table in
an html page, so it looks as if it was constructed in HTML.

Is this possible with Coldfusion, if so what is the procedure for achieving
the best result?

Are there any tags or methods to achieve this, apart from COM which relies
on either the user have word installed locally or the server having word
installed which is not an option if you are running on UNIX or LINUX.

Finally are any o the list aware of www.wwvare.com it parses word data and
converts it into html or into a db I think, anyone on the list used this
before?

Re: JMAIL

2001-09-20 Thread Gary Kraeger

Yes jmail will send 80,000 and more, it depends more on your server config
than anything.
We have discovered some ways in which we can improve jmail, which will make
it at least 10 times faster than it currently is and we are adding the
ability to do personalized emails, which has been the biggest request thus
far. We are adding these features very quickly, and they will be a free
upgrade when we are done with it. Hopefully this answers your question.

Thanks

RE: I'm resending - help

2001-09-20 Thread Patrick Harkins

Michael:
I read your question and it is not entirely clear but I get the general
drift. What you are asking suggests that the architecture of what you are
doing is unweildy.

Not to be annoying, but you are asking ColdFusion to do too much - believe
me I know this from experience. ColdFusion should only be used as the glue
to integrate your output. It is not designed to be a workhorse.

What database are you using? You can probably do a lot of the work on the
database side, if you are using a true database server, using triggers and
stored procedures. It sounds to me like you may well be in need of a whole
separate OLAP database. That is where I would suggest that you direct your
thoughts - it will save you a whole lot of grief, and your server will
continue to be your friend.

Michael.

Get 404 referrer

2001-09-20 Thread Steven Douglas

Hello,

I'm trying to capture the http referrer from a 404 page. In the cfadmin I
have a page set up to handle the 404, and in the source of that page I am
outputting cgi.http_referrer but it comes up blank in both ie and netscape.
Is there any other way to capture the referring page, or is cf doing
something weird when a 404 is encountered.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I replied to this on the fusebox list, but it didnt' seem to come through...

There's a registry setting which will allow you to cause CF to concatenate a

RE: I'm resending - help

2001-09-20 Thread Matthew W Jones

If you feel you need to grab the generated content into a variable (for
whatever reason) and you are using cf 5, there is cfsavecontent, if you are
using something prior to 5 then you could use the cf_bodycontent custom tag
(possibly available in dev exchange, for sure available at fusebox.org).

Basically you would wrap the code that generates output with one of the
tags, and where you want to display it (or in your case put it in the
database) you would just use the variable.

Hello, a friend of mine asked me what the Cold Fusion community wanted
in a Cold Fusion hosting company, what I thought the most important
issues were to a cold fusion hosting company, price, features, customer

He wants to start hosting CF sites, they have done ASP and PHP very well

don't host many sites out in the hosting world. So I am wondering if
some of you can help me answer his questions.

1. What is it you want in a cold fuison hosting company that you
currently can not get.

2. What features do you want from your hosting company.

3. What price ranges are you looking to be in.

4. what is most important to you price, features, customer services.

The CGI variable is CGI.HTTP_REFERER (note that it's not spelled the way you
want to spell it if you were spelling correctly). If you spell it the way
you have below, I don't think CF will throw an error, it just returns a
blank value.

Re: cfparam on dynamically numbered checkboxes

2001-09-20 Thread cf refactoring

Kay,

According to the http protocol, unchecked control
items such as checkboxes and radios are not sent at
all. Therefore, your action page will get no clue that
they exist. It's just one of those things with forms.

You'll have to remember what control items you have in
your program. One common way of dealing with it is to
do 's for all your checkboxes in your action
page.

Re: Integrating email solutions with CF

2001-09-20 Thread Howie Hamlin

We have done things like this with iMS. iMS would make this far easier to accomplish
than any other mail server. iMS puts CF in
control of every aspect of sent and received email.

The situation that you mention here sounds fairly simple but is actually somewhat
complicated. For example, most outlook users
leave their default settings which means that the mail would be html formatted. Also,
there is a chance that the mail could be
quoted printable or base64 encoded as well. For NTMail you would need to write a
"robot" (which is a kind of CGI for the mail
server) or another type of processor (NTMail allows you to write an SMTP DLL for basic
functions). This means that you need a
developer to write these programs and then somehow get the information into CF.

The software would need to MIME-docode the mail and then call CF via CFML.EXE.

Here is the way NTMail could do this:

SMTP Receives mail completely
SMTP calls Robot
Robot decodes mail and writes out a CSV file
Robot calls CFML to read in the CSV

Here's how iMS would do this:

SMTP Receives mail completely
ColdFusion template uses CFX_ODSMIME tag (included with iMS) to decode the mail. The
same ColdFusion template does the additional
processing of the CSV data.

Of course I'm biased, but I think iMS is the best solution for processing mail
dynamically.

Hi:

I am not sure what you are asking. You can always format the document
using
nested tables, but it is slow and painful - must be done by hand coded
HTML.
As you must know, the built-in Word HTML converter is no good.

If you want to save time on a tool to wite the html for you, I tried the
online demo of OutsideIn-Server a year or so ago and was totally blown
away.
The product should be found at www.inso.com, but when i try to go there
i
get a 404 error, so perhaps the company is out of business or who knows
what..but things are very wormy today, so it may be a temporary
thing.

Hope that helps :)

Hi

I wish to integrate a ms word document within an existing html page

CF. I would like to display the contents of the word doc within a table

an html page, so it looks as if it was constructed in HTML.

Is this possible with Coldfusion, if so what is the procedure for
achieving
the best result?

Are there any tags or methods to achieve this, apart from COM which
relies
on either the user have word installed locally or the server having word
installed which is not an option if you are running on UNIX or LINUX.

Finally are any o the list aware of www.wwvare.com it parses word data
and
converts it into html or into a db I think, anyone on the list used this

I know this sounds silly but it must be very hard to keep track of a 15k

your code into smaller chunks and using cfinclude as much as possible.

Look in your temp directories, on my box (CF studio 4.0), when it happens
(often), CF has written a .tmp file in the temp directory. Just look for
the latest tmp file, open it, and see if your code is in there.

RE: CFWDDX problem

2001-09-20 Thread Mike Kear

Yes yes yes. The [ ] notation doesn't work. Creates an error. The error
message says
Invalid parser construct found on line 214 at position 78. ColdFusion was
looking at the following text:
.
Invalid expression format. The usual cause is an error in the expression
structure.
The period it objects to is the one immediately before the first square
bracket in the line:

Whereas, the 3 versions of the evaluate version did work.

What's the problem with using evaluate? Is it slower than using the []
notation?

Re: XML Parser for CF

We have a free one at http://www.cfdev.com here is a description of it.

CFX_XMLParser is a Fast Java CFX tag that takes an XML document and returns
a ColdFusion structure containing the XML document. Our tests show this
parser to be about 1000% faster than the MSXML Parser invoked through
CFOBJECT. CFOBJECT based parsers also tend to buckle under load.

RE: Converting Word and Excel to HTML

2001-09-20 Thread Patrick Harkins

Hi Kathryn:

It depends on the documents themselves how they look when they turn out.
Basically, the converted pages tend to look ugly. And as Mark Smyth said,
Dreamweaver can clean up the wonky HTML. Yes it is doable with Excel too, in
fact I have found that Excel documents tend to turn out better.

You might want to consider getting Adobe Acrobat (the full version, not the
Reader) and using it to convert the docs to pdfs. Here is a link that
explains the process and talks about some of the issues:
http://users.belgacom.net/prepresspanic/pdf/apps/word.htm . Or you could go
with activePDF: www.activepdf.com.

Acrobat Reader is a free and quick install for those who do not already have
it.

my two cents... :)

Patrick Harkins

Thanks!

these files affect how CFCONTENT behaves. If you haven't, you might try

I don't know why I didn't think of you before! I've used your "basic" iMS a

Unsecured tags directory more than one???

2001-09-20 Thread Mark W. Breneman

We do CF hosting for our clients that we developed for. Now one of the
clients will be maintaining their static pages and we will only be in charge
of the CF based store.

They will have FTP access to only their folder, but I am concerned that I am
opening up a security hole with the more powerful cf tags CFFILE,
CFREGISTRY, CFEXECUTE, etc. I take security very seriously on my servers.
I would like to disable the tags for this one client not for the hole
server. The CFadmin does just opposite.

I use CFEXECUTE to run a bat to restart PCanywhere if/when it goes down. I
realize that I could run all of the tags from the "Unsecured tags
directory". My question is can I specify more then one Unsecured tags
directory? Perhaps in the registry?

CFSILENT

2001-09-20 Thread Bruce Holm

Do you have experience working with CFSILENT tags?

I tried using it for the first time and it works if it wraps around
blocks of code at the same level in the hierarchy. But if you try to
put the /CFSILENT tag inside (below) CFIF, CFLOOP, CFSWITCH, CFOUTPUT,
etc while the beginning CFSILENT tag is prior to these tags, then it
DOESN'T work! I get a CF error that an end tag is wrong (/CFCASE if
/CFSILENT is inside a CFSWITCH somewhere, /CFIF if it's within CFIF and
/CFIF, etc.)

Example that works:

Some text

Some more text

Example that doesn't work:

Some text

Some more text

Have I just stumbled onto what the rest of you already know or am I
using it wrong? The lame CF reference manual doesn't help AT ALL on
this tag.

Please Help: Parsing URL into Array and structure

2001-09-20 Thread Snyder, Jason

I am working on parsing a URL string and storing it in an array of structures. I am
to the point where it works to a certain extent, but not to the point where I need it.
To be more specific I am passing a string that should be parsed into two structure
elements in the array. The data seems to be inserted, but but when I try to access
the structure key 'name' in array element 1 it comes up while array element 2 does
not. Here is the Query string that I am passing:

MaintenanceEditTable.cfm?table=tlkpStatus&tableCols=Statno,
Status&ColOptions=name:Statno;width:100, name:Status;width:300

In this URL string I pass the database table name. Then I pass table columns. The I
pass column options in the following format:
1. Comma delimits columns.
2. Semicolon delimits options for a column.
3. Colon delimits option / value pair.
4. Name option is required. (Specifies name of column.)

Here is the code that parses ColOptions (note that cfoutput is only used to display
debugging information):

#iCntLoop#, #aColTemp[1]#,
#aColOpts[iCntLoop][aColTemp[1]]#;

When I run this I interpreted the debugging information as meaning that values where
entered and read back out of the first two positions in the array. Please tell me if
you have a different interpretation or find something wrong with mine.

Here is the code that ColdFusion choked on:

#iCntDF#, #aColOpts[iCntDF].name#;

For me this seemed to go through the first position in the array and read the struct
value, but it choked on the second position in the array.

RE: Hosting

2001-09-20 Thread Billy Cravens

I'm sure you'll get plenty of responses, but I wanted to point out a few
things based upon my experience with various hosts:

- make sure that client vars are configured to use ODBC, not the
Registry - otherwise performance will suffer, affecting the customer
- ease of configuring ODBC datasources - many companies require you to
email them, and take a couple of days to get it done (this can be easily
automated)
- scalable packages - I'm not talking about storage or bandwidth. Most
hosts throw X number of clients per server (oftentimes in the hundreds).
I understand that this is cost effective. If I want "cheap", I
recognize that I'll be sharing with hundreds. However, I'd like to see
packages where I can choose my level of exclusivity on a server, and pay
accordingly (for example, something like $30 to share with 300, $50 to
share with 100, $80 to share with 50, etc, with the same amount of space
and bandwidth per package)
- security - very few, if any (I haven't seen any exceptions, though I'm
sure they're out there) know how to properly implement CF security. The
answer is to usually disable *key* tags and features, (though some
foolish companies leave them open, with no restrictions) - it's possible
(and safe) to enable things like RDS, CFFile, unlimited custom tags,
etc, if advanced security with sandboxes is *properly* implemented.
- have a large quantity of the *standard* free (or commercial, and pass
the cost on to the customers) custom tags pre-installed (both CFX and
CFM) - perhaps even some COM objects as well

I (though I think I'm speaking for many) would be willing to pay more
for a host that goes above and beyond.

(Admin) Security Mutex

2001-09-20 Thread Michael Dinowitz

Subject: Mutex To:
Blaine Kubesh reported that having an open handle to a mutex named
"fsdhqherwqi2001" kills Nimda.
After posting the app I quickly coded up to do this, others tested it and
said it keeps a box from becomming infected both initially and recurrently.
Some mail servers kicked back the zipped up .exe file, so I have posted it
on the Hammer of God site, and can be downloaded here:
http://www.hammerofgod.com/download/mutex.zip

The zip includes the exe and the cpp source for those interested. It simply
opens the handle, and waits for you to hit the letter 'q' to kill the
session. That's all, and it reportedly works.
Blaine gets all the credit; I just coded the thing up real quick. Go nuts.
Later.

I don't think that's going to work. When you use CFCONTENT, it changes HTTP

Re: CFWDDX problem

2001-09-20 Thread Craig Fisher

If I understand the question at hand the proper syntax should be:

This will execute faster than the equivalent code using evaluate.

Remeber that, with structures, the [] can contain any valid expression that
evaluates to a string.

BTW in arrays it's any valid expression that evaluates to an integer.

Can your CFX_XMLPARSER convert CF Structures into XML?

We have a free one at http://www.cfdev.com here is a description of it.

CFX_XMLParser is a Fast Java CFX tag that takes an XML document and returns
a ColdFusion structure containing the XML document. Our tests show this
parser to be about 1000% faster than the MSXML Parser invoked through
CFOBJECT. CFOBJECT based parsers also tend to buckle under load.

Yes.

Since PHP and ColdFusion are separate Apache modules.

Map your .cfm and .cfml files to the ColdFusion dll
and map your .php .whatever files to the PHP DLL.

Thats the basics of it.. it is dead easy to do. You
can have any number of Apache modules.
