I'm populating an SQL7 table with possible numeric values AppMenuID
using
a look up list from a web form. The field can also be left null.

It puts the correct value or null into the table but the form dosn't

How do I get this to work.

Any SP will give you a performance boost, but it will not be
 that recognizable
with something that does not get updated often. It is alot
 faster to simply have
sql save the new info than it is to check what fields to update
 prior. Rule of
thumb is to let your sql backend do its work and not your CF
 application as sql
 out-performs CF hands down.

  Hi

I often have an application which allows a user to edit a
 record. Even if
the user only updates one field all fields are resaved in the
 database. Its
occured to me that this may be inefficient. I wondered if I
 could store the
fields in hidden form fields, check on the update page which
 fields have
changed and only update the fields that have. I also wondered
 if this would
be best done in a stored proc on the datebase side but I
 imagine that the
stored proc would have to call the record, compare the new
 field values and
then update the neccesary field which be more of a performance
 hit. Does
anyone know if this is worth doing or are any performance
 gains going to be
negligble. Also this seems like a feature that databases may
 already utilise
on a low level but i'm not sure.

  Comments anyone?

  Thanks

could you write an isapi filter to do the logging and

I do know that logging functionality is exposed in ISAPI. I'm not sure

RE: Evaluating Variables from a stupid person who doesn't change subj ect (was RE: Checking an email)

2002-03-29 Thread Raymond Camden

Once again, you don't have to use evaluate.

You can grab the columns by using #queryname.columnList#, and then to
get a particular column, just do: #query[col]#.

This is how DUMP is able to display queries.

RE: Dynamic queries in stored procedures

2002-03-29 Thread Tony_Petruzzi

the only way to do it is to use the EXEC function.

DECLARE @tempvar varchar(200)
DECLARE @ColumnName varchar(100)
SET @ColumnName = 'MyColumn'
SET @tempvar = 'SELECT * FROM ' + @ColumnName
EXEC(@tempvar)

Just remember that with you have to make sure that you cast non-string
variable to variable.

DECLARE @tempvar varchar(200)
DECLARE @Amount int
SET @Amount = 20
SET @tempvar = 'SELECT * FROM ThisColumn WHERE Amount = ' + CAST(@Amount AS
varchar(10))

If not SQL Server thinks you're trying to add a string and a number together
and will throw an error.

RE: cfset/cfstoredproc

2002-03-29 Thread Janine Jakim

Sorry I didn't respond immediately- I went home sick yesterday afternoon.
The 2nd example shows the correct person but everyone comes up with the 1st
persons answers. When I do a regular output each person comes up with the
correct answers--once I add cfset each person receives the answers for the
1st person!
I originally did a join (there are 6 tables making the actual table- 2 of
which are one to many)and used CFPROCRESULT to get the answers. Again
getting the output format wasn't working correctly when using the cfset-
once I did a cfset it would only give me one page for the results- showing
the first person's name/answers-when I looped it I got many pages- each page
had the 1st persons name/answers.

I then did my stored procedure with 2 queries one pulls all the one to one
info and then the second one that pulls the one to many info. I use
several CFPROCRESULT tags to display the info.
Again it displays fine until I add in the cfset tags. (But when I do the
exact thing as 2 separate cfqueries and use the cfset it works like a
charm!)

I find this very bizarre. I have them (cfquery/cfproc) literally set up the
same- they both work fine with a regular cfoutput- add the cfset and
suddenly the stored procedure doesn't put out the info that needs to loop
(ie: the answers)...
Can someone do a small demo and see if they get the same results?
Thanks
J
ps. my first cfoutput in my code did use the id as a group-I just forgot to
put that in:
CFOUTPUT QUERY=QOne GROUP=ID

Janine,

I don't think I'm following your example. What's wrong with the second
example? also, why do you need 2 queries? Why not a join? a join would give
you columns of
name , answer
name, answer,
name, answer
name, answer

ORder by name and make sure there is a PK ... then do this:

cfoutput query=myQuery group=name
#name# (or Cfset theName = name if you like)

cfoutput group=PK
... Use the PK to ensure all records are iterated
#answer# (or cfset Answer1 = answer)

/cfoutput

/cfoutput

Still... I'm not sure I know exactly what the problem is from the example
below.

-Mark

* your example *

This is somewhat of a repost from the other day but haven't gotten any
feedback- since I don't think I worded my problem very well.
I am moving some of my work from cfquery to storedprocedures- the problem is
the formatting when I use cfset with a stored procedures- they don't react
the same way as a cfquery does...
I need the info to show as such
Mark:
1. A
2. B
3. A
Mary
1. A
2. A
3. D
John
1. C
2. A
3. B
To achieve this with cfquery I did this:
CFOUTPUT QUERY=QOne
CFSET NAME= One.FIRSTNAME
CFLOOP QUERY =QTwo
CFSET One=QTwo.Answer[1]
CFSET Two=QTwo.Answer[2]
CFSET Three=QTwo.Answer[3]
/CFLOOP
/CFOUTPUT

If I do the same with a stored procedure I end up with
Mark:
1. A
2. B
3. A
Mary
1. A
2. B
3. A
John
1. A
2. B
3. A

I can't use just a regular output like Ben Forta shows in this CF5 book-I've
tried all his solutions but they all deal with regular outputs(which works
fine with the cfquery and cfstored proc)- I need to use a cfset statement
because each answer needs its own name.
Has anyone run across this? What's the best solution?

RE: HTML comments and tag completion

Create your own short cut keys for CF HTML comments. That way auto
complete won't get in the way and you don't have to type them.

Re: calling 5 articles minus the latest one

2002-03-29 Thread BEN MORRIS

I think it would be like:

cfquery datasource=gmu name=mag
select TOP 5 id, type, title, snippets, date, url
 from local_gisnews
 where type = 'mag'
 AND ID MAX(ID)
 Order by date desc
/cfquery

You could also just select the TOP 6 records and skip the first one in the CF code.

It returns the first non null value. When a value is provided its used as a

For example, if you type application, session, or server, stop and
think, Did I use cflock?

If you type evalute, stop and think, Do I really need it?

Best bet is to run hfnetchk...

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/
tools/hfnetchk.asp
(Watch out for the wrap...)

This tool will go out and compare all the security patches available with
the ones installed on your machine. You can then use qchain to do a one
time install of all the hotfixes you are missing (traditionally, each hotfix
typically required a reboot... With qchain, you can install them all and
reboot once). I've found that for server security, Windows Update doesn't
cut it.

Creating a CSV File

DHTML Layers

2002-03-29 Thread Rick Walters

Hi Everyone,

While this is not a Cold Fusion question, someone out there might have
run into this problem before.

I am creating dynamic javascript to control a set of drop down menus.
My problem arises when I have a page with form input fields. Whenever
there are form input fields on the page the layers containing the
menuitems display behind the form input elements. Naturally I want the
drop down layers to appear above the form elements but I don't really
know how. Any ideas?

RE: Creating a CSV File

Store your information in a variable until you reach a certain number of
records and then append it to the file. You will have a significantly

RE: Evaluating Variables from a stupid person who doesn't change subj ect (was RE: Checking an email)

2002-03-29 Thread Raymond Camden

There _are_ times when you need it, of course.

The #1 way I see people using evaluate when they don't need it is to get
dynamic form names. Ie, looping through form fields not know at design
time. In this scenario, you should simply use the Form scope like a
structure:

cfloop item=field collection=#form#
cfoutputForm.#field# is #Form[field]#br/cfoutput

/cfloop

RE: DHTML Layers

You need to set the z-index property on your layers.

Sounds like you're using Netscape for this, as in IE the select boxes are
system object and thus override everything else on the screen.

2002-03-29 Thread BEN MORRIS

I have had similar experience with lack of speed when creating CSVs. You can
accomplish this with only one call to cffile. You can just keep appending to a
variable:

cfset
csvfile=//kcweb/firmdaily/isweb/hbimport/#rtrim(GetAuthors.AUTHOR)#_FIRST.csv
cfset l_Output =
cfset l_NewLine = chr(13) chr(10)

cfoutput query=GetDocs

Unfortunately, this is a known issue with DHTML. If I remember correctly,

Anyone have any additional information / updates to this?

Subject: Creating a CSV File

RE: DHTML Layers + Flash!

2002-03-29 Thread Justin Hansen

This is not possible with regular DHTML layers but, I have come up with a
solution, but I don't have an example for you. Try putting a flash movie in
the layer. It will go over the form fields. It will even (in IE) allow
transparency. You can even see the webpage behind/through the menu. Now, to
do it right, you'll need a full dhtml/flash/cf solution for menus. I haven't
seen one yet. Currently, I'm waiting on my new employer to buy Flash MX.
When I get, it I plan on developing one. If anyone has beat me to this, let
me know. I would like to see what you came up with.

RE: Creating a CSV File

2002-03-29 Thread Marian Dumitrascu

A faster technique would be to select each line directly in the SQL query.
Like here:
CFQUERY NAME=GetDocs...
SELECT
'' + RTRIM(CATEGORY) + '' + ',' +
'' + RTRIM(newc2) + '' + ',' +
...
'' + RTRIM(C_Alias) + ''

AS line

FROM table

/CFQUERY

!--- create the file content
CFSET filecontent = ValueList(GetDocs.line,#CHR(13)##CHR(10)#)

!--- and save it ---
cffile action=APPEND file=#csvfile# output=#filecontent#

the query will not select lines with NULL fields if you use MS SQL server.
In that case you should use the COALESCE function for each field that might
be null:
COALESCE(field,'')
Also you may need to convert numeric or date type fields to nvarchar.

RE: Win 2k patch question

2002-03-29 Thread Kahng, Lucius

You can also go to start control panel add\remove to see a list of
installed patches.

Another way is to go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and let the site check
your settings to see what you need. (There's also a security rollup patch
you can install)

You need to set the z-index property on your layers.

Sounds like you're using Netscape for this, as in IE the select boxes
are
system object and thus override everything else on the screen.

Re: DHTML Layers

2002-03-29 Thread Marlon Moyer

Currently, only the gecko rendering engine works around this. The problem
arises from the fact that most browsers use their parent operating system to
draw form elements. These in essence are drawn on top of the web page and
aren't considered to be part of the web page. Gecko creates the form
elements itself, so it does have control over the placement. Unfortunately,
Gecko isn't quite as popular as IE..yet.

Sorry to rain on your parade.

 a
solution, but I don't have an example for you. Try putting a flash
 movie in
the layer. It will go over the form fields. It will even (in IE) allow
transparency. You can even see the webpage behind/through the menu.
 Now, to
do it right, you'll need a full dhtml/flash/cf solution for menus. I
 haven't
seen one yet. Currently, I'm waiting on my new employer to buy Flash
 MX.
When I get, it I plan on developing one. If anyone has beat me to this,
 let
me know. I would like to see what you came up with.

 Subject: DHTML Layers

 Hi Everyone,

While this is not a Cold Fusion question, someone out there might have
 run into this problem before.

I am creating dynamic javascript to control a set of drop down menus.
My problem arises when I have a page with form input fields. Whenever
there are form input fields on the page the layers containing the
menuitems display behind the form input elements. Naturally I want
 the
drop down layers to appear above the form elements but I don't really
 know how. Any ideas?

Re: CF IIS - Directories with '.com'

2002-03-29 Thread Jerry Johnson

My understanding is that IIS takes the first extension in the file path, and uses
that to decide who/what gets to interpret the file.

So with a path including .com, it will work just as you have seen.

If you had a path called test.htm or test.cfm, I think you'd see the same results.

If there is a way around this in IIS, I'd love to learn about it, too.

No help,
Jerry Johnson

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/28/02 04:52PM
I've run up against IIS's wonderful inability to correctly parse virtual
paths before, but this one has me stumped. If I have a folder
test.com on my web server (a domain name for a client's site we are
working on), any CF files that are under the directory with the .com
in the name are all passed back as source (with Content-Type:
application/octet-stream). If I rename the directory to just test
(that is, remove the .com) then the script executes as planned. I can
only assume that IIS isn't bothering to see if test.com is a directory
and is instead assuming it is an executable file with a .com
extension. I've tried poking around in the options ([dis]allowing
scripts executables, checking to see if the file exists, etc) but
nothing seems to fix it. We don't have this problem with our Apache
server.

I can't be the only one who has ever run up against this, but searching
for .com on the web is like drinking from a firehose. Anyone have any
pointers for how to fix it? (No, I don't want to rename all of my
directories to remove the .com.)

Thanks,
-R

Store your information in a variable until you reach a certain number of

reduced number of writes to the disk which is causing your slow

RE: DHTML Layers + Flash!

2002-03-29 Thread Justin Hansen

http://www.jhansen.net/demo/dhtmlflash.html

Here is a very crude demo. It shows a flash movie in a layer over a select
box. The real challenge is how to make the movie size dynamic. Which you
can't do. If you made one dynamic movie for each menu item, you could stack
them up and not have to worry about the canvas size. So, let's say you loop
over a flash menu object/custom tag, pass it text=link text and
link=file.html or showmenulayer(name), and you have yourself one killer
menu system.

I have had this idea for a while, just haven't taken the time to develop it
yet.

Verity Index type=path

2002-03-29 Thread Jackson Moore

I have been using Verity on a couple websites and have been pretty pleased thus far.
However, I recently encountered a problem when trying to index a large directory.
(This is the Verity that comes with CF4.5 - not the new CF5 version).

I have a directory with 5740 files in it - all Microsoft Word 97 documents. When I
create a new collection and use CFINDEX to index the documents, it doesn't add all
5740 documents and it isn't even consistent. Sometimes it will add 5728, 5732, 5735,
5736 - never all 5740.

I'm using the following CFINDEX code:

cfindexcollection=pnpworking2
action=update
type=path
key=e:\inetpub\wwwroot\websitename\documents\pnp\working\
extensions=.doc,.xls,.ppt,.pdf

I'm confirming the number of files added, by searching for a keyword and outputting
#search.RECORDSSEARCHED#.

I have also tried using the CF Administrator to index the directory and get the SAME
results.

If I start with a new collection and use CFDIRECTORY to get a listing of the files in
the directory and then loop over them one by one adding them to the collection using
CFINDEX and type=file, the server times out before finishing - I've let it run for 30
minutes.

In other places I use Verity, I don't have more than 1000 files in a single directory,
and I do not have this problem.

Questions:

1. Is there a limit to the number of files Verity can index in a single directory?
2. Maybe all the files are getting indexed, but the .RECORDSSEARCHED is incorrect?
3. I considered that it may be an issue where Verity can't access a document if its
in use by another process, but I made a copy of the directory and moved it somewhere
else on the server and am still having the same problem. Are there other possible
services that could access these files (preventing Verity from indexing them) I need
to be aware of?

(Platform NT4Sp6a/IIS4/CF4.5.1SP2)

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Jackson Moore

RE: Verity Index type=path

I've run into this problem, too, and have ended up breaking the big
directories into 1 or more smaller ones, with 1000 files each, and then
creating a separate index for each one.

A pain, I know, but it's been the only thing that worked for us.

On the bright side, if you organize the directories by subject, you can
allow folks to search only one index at a time...

Store your information in a variable until you reach a certain number of
records and then append it to the file. You will have a significantly
reduced number of writes to the disk which is causing your slow

create a .csv file from that data. It works. The problem is that it is

RE: Verity Index type=path

2002-03-29 Thread Jackson Moore

Thanks for the response - that really bites.

Your solution will be difficult to implement since documents are being added to this
directory all the time (web based upload). I guess I will need to count up the number
of files in the directory, and when it reaches 1000 (or some cutoff), create a new
directory and new verity collection? This seems like such a hack.

Under normal operating situations, the files are added one at a time using CFINDEX
type=file, but I wanted to build an administration tool that would purge and re-build
the collection in case it got corrupted.

I thought Verity was supposed to be able to support 64,000 documents per collection in
the Pro version of CF4.5. We anticipate a ceiling of about 30,000 docs when all are
online so I didn't anticipate a Verity problem.

Anyone else with a solution/workaround/hack/suggestion?

I've run into this problem, too, and have ended up breaking the big
directories into 1 or more smaller ones, with 1000 files each, and then
creating a separate index for each one.

A pain, I know, but it's been the only thing that worked for us.

On the bright side, if you organize the directories by subject, you can
allow folks to search only one index at a time...

Subject: Verity Index type=path

I have been using Verity on a couple websites and have been pretty pleased
thus far.  However, I recently encountered a problem when trying to index a
large directory.  (This is the Verity that comes with CF4.5 - not the new
CF5 version).

I have a directory with 5740 files in it - all Microsoft Word 97 documents.
When I create a new collection and use CFINDEX to index the documents, it
doesn't add all 5740 documents and it isn't even consistent.  Sometimes it
will add 5728, 5732, 5735, 5736 - never all 5740.

I'm using the following CFINDEX code:

cfindex        collection=pnpworking2
action=update
type=path
key=e:\inetpub\wwwroot\websitename\documents\pnp\working\
extensions=.doc,.xls,.ppt,.pdf

I'm confirming the number of files added, by searching for a keyword and
outputting #search.RECORDSSEARCHED#.

I have also tried using the CF Administrator to index the directory and get
the SAME results.

If I start with a new collection and use CFDIRECTORY to get a listing of the
files in the directory and then loop over them one by one adding them to the
collection using CFINDEX and type=file, the server times out before
finishing - I've let it run for 30 minutes.

In other places I use Verity, I don't have more than 1000 files in a single
directory, and I do not have this problem.

Questions:

1.  Is there a limit to the number of files Verity can index in a single
directory?
2.  Maybe all the files are getting indexed, but the .RECORDSSEARCHED is
incorrect?
3.  I considered that it may be an issue where Verity can't access a
document if its in use by another process, but I made a copy of the
directory and moved it somewhere else on the server and am still having the
same problem.  Are there other possible services that could access these
files (preventing Verity from indexing them) I need to be aware of?

(Platform NT4Sp6a/IIS4/CF4.5.1SP2)

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Jackson Moore

Is there an easy way to tell what patches have been applied

need on it but know of the best way to check.

Use HFNetChk, a free command-line tool available from Microsoft. Look for

I concur. I do checks on both Windows Update and with HFNetChk, and find
that HFNetChk will come back with critical patches that don't ever get
listed on the Windows Update site.

It's a great little tool, and extremely easy to run.

If you are using a cflocation tag on the pages, the cookies won't be
set (is that true with client cookies?). But it should be set on the

Re: RE: DHTML Layers

2002-03-29 Thread ksuh

Whoops, misread your question. I had thought you meant that select
boxes were rendering underneath other form elements.

Anyhow, you can use Flash as other people suggested. Java applets also
render above everything else. I know that in IE5.5 and above, there's
a way to create special menus that also override everything. Too bad
MS's site is such a bear to find information in, or else I'd send you a

You need to set the z-index property on your layers.

Sounds like you're using Netscape for this, as in IE the select boxes
 are
system object and thus override everything else on the screen.

Re: SOT: Like vs. =

Not necessarily.

Using a scalar function on the column name renders indexes useless. On
the other hand, doing a like clause where the value is something
like a% and not %a% will use the index (if there is one) on that
column.

Apart from the fact that it does return records in some databases, the
amount of records returned is absolutely irrelevant in most databases
(when the number isn't huge). What matters is the type of query
execution plan you get (index scan vs. full table scan) vs. the best
possible plan and the amount of calculations that are required for each
step.

What you need to ask yourself in optimizing queries is what would be the
most efficient way for the database to handle the query. Would that be
an index scan or a full table scan. Can I create the circumstances in
which an index scan is faster? Can I create the circumstances in which a
table scan is faster?
For instance, with long rows or a clustered table an index scan is
usually faster because it requires less (expensive) trips to the
harddisk to get the data. But if the rows you want to get are so well
dispersed through the table and are so short that when reading only the
blocks you want the entire table is read anyway a full table scan is
faster. Unless ofcourse you have created an index on left(description,1)
in which case the left function doesn't have to be executed at each row
and the index becomes faster again.

Reading up on the performance tuning docs of your database is an
absolute necessity to answer these questions. There is no one-line
answer to the question that was asked the way it was asked.

RE: REPOST: Re: CDONTS and ReplyTo

2002-03-29 Thread Christopher Olive

i agree. asp is designed as a COM wrapper.

however, i wasn't asking ease of coding. i was asking efficiency of the scripting
engine in regards to instantiating/manipulating objects.

i'd lean toward ASP being more effient in that regard, as well (after all, it was
designed to do that). i was just asking if anyone had empirical evidence.

i don't know if that's entirely correct. is ASP more
efficient at creating/manipulating objects than CF? that's
all the calls do, at the base level.

In general, it's certainly easier to work with COM interfaces in ASP
compared to CF, with all the clunkiness in CFOBJECT.

OT: Process locking file

2002-03-29 Thread Howie Hamlin

I have a file on an NT/4 server that I can't delete. I get an error saying that the
file is locked by a process. I know I can
reboot the server and delete the file but I really need to know what process is
locking it. Is there a way to find out what process
is locking the file?

Thanks,

Try cfset objNewMail. To = [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dina,
Thanks for the reply, but I believe this sets the To: address of
the email (i.e. the address to which the email is sent). I'm
trying to find a way to set the Reply-To header so that any
replies to the mailing are directed to the Reply-To value rather
than the From: value.

   cfset objNewMail.ReplyTo = [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   cfset objNewMail.Reply_To = [EMAIL PROTECTED]
   cfset objNewMail.Value(Reply-To) = [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: 2 Selects killing me

Well it works it just takes about 5 minutes to loadliterally and quite a few
seconds when I select from the first box. What can I do to speed it up?

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/28/02 05:52PM
Can you view the source? Is it possible that you are querying too many
records and the browser can't handle all of the javascript that the tag is
generating? I've killed a browser or two in this manner before :) Check the
recordcount...

right and I am not populating the selects right

here is my query. Basically I have a table with lots of records. Using
the first select box I want to to show only the cpt codes from the 1st boxes
list of locations. the fees table has a idnumber, the locationid, the cpt
code and some other data.

Re: Internationalization

2002-03-29 Thread Paul Hastings

I think the term you are looking for is ..localisation or
 localization (US).

no, its internationalization (I18N). basically prepping/adapting your
app to work in more than 1 locale. ms being ms refers to this as
globalization (which to me actually sounds cooler). localizaton (L10N)
prepping/adapting your app to work with a specific locale.

in answer to the original question: how longs a piece of string? this isn't
something you're going to get answered in an email
