Always, for every datatype, every single time.

I found a list of dtattypes for most db (the cf docs are poor!) but what about Access? I don't know what mates up with a text or memo field and such.

Thanks.

The datatypes for cfqueryparam are the same as the datatypes in the
JDBC spec so that mapping is easy. How JDBC datatypes are matched to
database specific datatypes should be in the driver documentation. But
you should probably try longvarchar.

If you can use the cfobject tag (or via cfscript), you can list all the
system DSNs via the service factory.

I think Jochem has some code samples on his site.

Subject: Recommend a threaded forum application

I know a variation of this question gets asked every couple of months or
so.Is there a good CF based forum application available?Must be
threaded, with the option to view threads either via a threaded view or
flat view. From what I've seen in the past (haven't looked in about a
year) the choices in CF based forums are pretty slim. And those that
I've
looked at aren't particularly full featured in comparison to some of the
php boards.

Must support CF5 and would prefer ODBC support for MySQL, but Access via
ODBC is probably sufficient for this application.Good use of CSS for
customization of the look is a must.

If you don't have a good CF forum to recommend, then a recommendation
for
a PHP based application would be the second choice.I've worked with
phpbb and like it, but have crossed it off the list due to it's lack of
support (and no plans) for threaded discussions. And I don't have the
time to incorporate the fairly involved mods to phpbb to add threading.

Thanks.

since added all sorts of useful functionality

I've always thought that a site which changes functionality for
different parts is a bit of a mish-mash - you can't run the same code
for the menus (if they're dynamic depending on the users) plus any
additional features you might have built into the site

Also, if something breaks on the other technology, then you have no
real way of tracking down the bug, or fixing it, unless you know the

Doesn't seem to work. Let me explain alittle more

I add the original information into the text area and save the whole textarea into the db,

then I run a query and output the results

So

!--- FORM.CONTENT holds the text and CFML code ---
INSERT INTO tablename
(content)
VALUES('#form.content#')

Then
SELECT content
FROM tablename

cfoutput#getContent.content#/cfoutput

It still displays the same. and doesn't show the value of the variable.

Unless things have improved over time, you have to write the db output

Printing Labels from a Web Application?

2004-04-19 Thread Oliver Cookson
Hi,

I have just built e-commerce based web app but there is a need to print
labels from within the back office to a laser jet with Avery A4 address
labels. I could possibly use a Dymo 320 label writer instead. Luckily
the back office is only viewed by IE6.

If I was going to use the Avery method I'm unsure how to lay it out? Of
course I could use CSS absolute positioning but what happens when I'm
printing to the label on the 2nd row or 2nd column etc... I was thinking
of using JS to position the labels dependent on what row\col I needed to
print on but this could be cumbersome. I would only need to print one
label at a time.

So does anyone know of a way of integrating a semi-automated labelling
system into the back office of a web application? If someone out there
has solved this issue before I would greatly appreciate any thoughts on
the matter before I try and reinvent the wheel myself!

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks Oliver

If you are looking for just a spider (not indexing) and you are cool

cat, web grep, and web copy. Their programs are written a bit oddly, but
are helpful (source included for your coding pleasure).

If you need everything, I have used Lucene (which I think has been
mentioned on this thread) with much success. Here is an article on how
to use it in java - which is translatable to cf if you know a bit of

clicking on a map

2004-04-19 Thread Claude Schneegans
Hi, I'm looking for a custom tag that would do the following, can someone give me a hint?

- a geographical map is displayed on a page in a GIF image.
- the map is declared a map (in the HTML sense), so that when a user clicks on it, the exact coordinates are sent to the server.
- now in the server, some tag would be able to read the file and return the color, and the color index in the palette, of the pixel hit by the click. This could be used very easily to identify the area clicked.

Thanks.

P.S. If such a tag does not exist, I'm plannng to write one, any one interested?

movie Clips on movie Clips?

2004-04-19 Thread Frank Dewey
Hi again,

What I eventually am trying to do is to create a drag/drop menu where
you can open and close the folders and add new folders - like Windows
2K.For this application, all movieclips/text boxes are created
dynamically from Microsoft SQL.What I've thought anout doing is

1) to have a parent movie clip that is transparent. On top of this
would be (1) a child MovieClip that is duplicated and that would hold
the images of an open/close folder or a file;and (2) a text box that
can hold the names of the menu items.

2) A similar way to acomplish this (I think), would be to have a text
box with html set to true and HTMLtext = eval(IMG
src="" + Name)
and then addMovieClip.addListener(myTextField)
I can't get the Img thing to work though I know it should in CFMX2004.

3) of course another way is with one movie clip that is next to its
corresponding text.So the two are not really combined at all, but
their instance names will be such that They always appear next to each
other.

The picture and text have to be combined or related in some fashion so
that they always appear next to each other. This is because the user
can add a folder or drag a folder (and its text) to another location in
the menu.

my question is:
1) how to create a duplicated movie clip ontop of another movie clip
(for Scenario 1)
2) Any suggestions/comments
3) is there another good Flash forum?Perhaps one similar to this one
for ColdFusion?

Thank You -
Frank

Ok, but the problem is WHAT to put in the variable?
What I want to do is get rid of all these AREAs definitions in HTML.
When you have maps with tens of states, provinces, departments or whatever, its a lot of work, and inaccurate.
If all these regions use a unique and specific color (easy to do in a gif file), then it easy to get the region by its color.

so you'd basically have to have a map from which you can get your x/y
clicking coordinates and map those coords to a lat/lon combo?

is that what ur trying to do?

if so, then you could reverse geocode that and get the
address/city/state/zip

but then you'd have to have some sort of spatial database with the ability
to reverse geocode.

RE: clicking on a map

2004-04-19 Thread Hagan, Ryan Mr (Contractor ACI)
Try this:

If you use the image in a form (e.g. input type=image ...), when you
click on the image the X,Y of the image is passed to the form's action page.
You can then use something along the lines of ImageMagik to find out what
the color of the pixel is at that exact location.Note that there may be
other tags out there that do this too (and don't require any install on the
server, but I'm not aware of them).

You still need the areas or nothing is clickable AFAIK

When you have maps with tens of states, provinces, departments or whatever, its a lot of work, and inaccurate.

Agreed...but accuracy all depends on how well you construct the map (both visually and programmatically)

If all these regions use a unique and specific color (easy to do in a gif file), then it easy to get the region by its color.

True...but as I said...you still need the areas...and it's just as easy to get the region by the variable passed

Re: clicking on a map

2004-04-19 Thread Claude Schneegans
so you'd basically have to have a map from which you can get your x/y

You just declare ISMAP in you IMG tag, but you don't have to actually define the HTML associate MAP and all AREAs. This way, the exact coordinates of the pixel hit are sent to the server.
>From these coordinates, I can get the color index used by the pixel and return to the CF programer.
You just need some table with the correspondance region/color and you know which region was clicked.
No USEMAP, no AREAs, and the click is accurate to the pixel.

but then you'd have to have some sort of spatial database with the ability
to reverse geocode.

Actually much simpler than this. This could be done also, but it depends the type of coordinate system used to draw the map, supposing you know it.

Claude,

Cool Idea! Maybe you wouldn't need to bother with the x/y coordinates, and could just
grab the color directly - or is that what you're thinking already? ... check this

Hmm, typo sorry.It's ImageMagick:

I get the impression that it's already installed on most servers. However,
it's a bit complex. If you can grab the color info using _javascript_ on the
client side, that'd be cool.I'm sure you could also do it using the Java
API, if you are familiar with how to manipulate Java2D.Also, there are
other server side solutions that can pull tons of image data from a GIF, I
just don't know what they all are.ImageMagick is the only one I've worked
with.

Nice little program, but it looks like it is a stand alone program and does not seem it can be used from _javascript_ in any browser on a HTML page.
They sell the source, but they don't even say in what laguage it is written.
I doubt it is possible. If it was possible, I would have seen it at least in Jscript and Explorer.

chattyfig.figleaf.com is a good start. As for loading child movies into a

Subject: movie Clips on movie Clips?

2) A similar way to acomplish this (I think), would be to have a text
box with html set to true and HTMLtext = eval(IMG
src="" + Name)
and then addMovieClip.addListener(myTextField)

Thank You -
Frank

Changing sessiontimeout attribute

2004-04-19 Thread Daniel Elmore
Hello, the CFAPPLICATION tag is throwing me for a ride here. I can't seem to
consistently change the timeout for session variables. I'm calling the CFAPP
tag twice in application.cfm (don't worry about why, long story, it has to
be done). Something like this

cfapplication name=app1 sessionmanagement=yes
sessiontimeout=#createtimespan(0,0,5,0)#

cfset request.timeout = 10

cfapplication name=app1 sessionmanagement=yes
sessiontimeout=#createtimespan(0,0,request.timeout,0)#

And sometimes it changes the timeout value, sometimes it doesn't. For a
while it seemed like it was only letting me overwrite the timeout if I

Whats up with that?

I'm useing the session.getMaxInactiveInterval() function to check the

Dave,
We do the combo of the three (CF, DW Templates, and Contribute). But, we've
found that we must include the html, head, and body tags in all our

Unfortunately, it works less well for CF pages, since Dreamweaver doesn't
always understand the structure of a CF page, since that page may not
directly have the basic HTML tags that any HTML page should have.

RE: Changing sessiontimeout attribute

Hello, the CFAPPLICATION tag is throwing me for a ride here. I can't seem
to
consistently change the timeout for session variables. I'm calling the
CFAPP
tag twice in application.cfm (don't worry about why, long story, it has to
be done). Something like this

cfapplication name=app1 sessionmanagement=yes
sessiontimeout=#createtimespan(0,0,5,0)#

cfset request.timeout = 10

cfapplication name=app1 sessionmanagement=yes
sessiontimeout=#createtimespan(0,0,request.timeout,0)#

And sometimes it changes the timeout value, sometimes it doesn't. For a
while it seemed like it was only letting me overwrite the timeout if I
supplied a large value than the previous one, but then it broke that rule.
Whats up with that?

Why not just set a variable for the entire createTimeSpan() function instead
of just a portion of it?

cfset Request.timeout = createTimeSpan(0,0,10,0) /

cfapplication name=app1 sessionmanagement=yes
sessiontimeout=#Request.timeout#

arrayindexoutofbounds error

2004-04-19 Thread Deanna Schneider
Hi All,
So, I've come up with what I think is a bug. We're using CFMX 6.1 on linux
with Oracle 8.1.7.

If I have a web form that inserts data into a varchar2 field, and the user
enters more than 2000 characters AND a microsoft extended character, I get
an arrayindexoutofbounds error. Doesn't happen with CLOB fields, though we
were having a similiar issue with CLOB fields prior to one of the hotfixes.

We're using the 3.1 driver, as 3.2 wasn't handling clobs correctly and 3.3
seem to be causing stability errors.

Has anyone else experienced this? Care to run a quick test?

On first blush, from the error message you provided me, sounds like something changed in your database design.A field was modified in a table that is used in a view and the corresponding field in the view no longer matches it's parent in the base table?

Hi gang.

I was trying to demonstrate CFMX's self documentation of CFCs to a co-worker, so punched in the URL to a CFC file.I got the error listed below.

I've seen this occur before but have not been able to determine the exact circumstances where I would see it.I initially suspected it was a problem in how we were calling our CFCs(i.e. MyObj = createObject(component, #oConfig.CFCPath#.rules.myCFC); ), but have seen this work with no problems before as well.So I'm a little confused. The error being reported is in a Java class, and does not point to any code we've written.

Any tips or suggestions on this? Thanks muchly.

RE: Dreamweaver sites deleting themselves

This (losing site definitions) did happen a lot in DW 6.0, and less
frequently in 6.1- I'd definitely recommend checking out this utility:

http://mm-exporter.joexx.de/ http://mm-exporter.joexx.de/

... very handy for backing up/migrating your entire site definitions- but
alas, is only available for Windows right now- Mac users will have to resort
to vanilla 'one-off' exports from the Site Definitions window.

Actually, DW saves site settings in the registry. You could write a script
that uses regedit.exe to export that section of the registry to a .reg file.
You could then use that .reg file to restore the site settings when they
mysteriously disappear. This illustrates that this really seems to be an OS
issue and not a DW issue--at least as far as the registry goes.A better
solution might be to NOT store site settings in the registry, but as text
files within the user's profile directory (C:\Documents and Settings).

will be replicated on each of the pages that uses that template. So, if

Re: [OT] Dreamweaver nightmare

2004-04-19 Thread Deanna Schneider
Your solution there is not to do it. Basically, you'd be defeating the
concept of an editable region. If you need to add page-specific elements, it
should either be done inside an editable area, or outside the html entirely
(like for cf processing logic or includes, or whathaveyou).

If you edit things that are in the non-editable region (ie., with a text
editor) the next time you change the template and push the template change
out to the subsequent pages, you'll lose your edits. Have it happen once and
you'll no longer circumvent DW's security with a text editor.

If you edit in the non-editable areas, then you want to dissociate the page
from the template. If you don't, and then update the template, it will
overwrite your code in the non-editable areas. That's why those areas are
non-editable.

If you need to add code that is specific to the page, either add it in an
editable area or create an editable area in the template to hold your code.

RE: Writing formatted data to Excel

2004-04-19 Thread Samuel R. Neff
I'd agree with John's suggestion that you should create the formatted text
in Excel, save as HTML, and then view the HTML to see how it persisted the
formatting information.

The only difference of opinion I have is that this technique is extremely
flexible and can be used to accomplish a very wide range of goals.I've
used it extensively for formatting, formulas, and styles.I've also seen
others use it to insert comments into a dynamically generated workbook
(those little red triangles that you mouse over for more information).

The trick is once you save as HTML, incrementally remove things until you've
removed everything other than what you actually need. Then you can know for
sure what tags/attributes create the result you want.

Pay attention to the XML declarations on the root tag. They're required and
even the prefixes must remain the same even though some point to the same
namespace. This is contrary to XML standards but is fact of life when
working with Office HTML/XML/CSS.

MS does have a reference guide for this, Microsoft Office HTML and XML
Reference. It doesn't have a tutorial or examples or anything, just a
reference.

I have some related entries and presentations on my blog, but nothing
directly on point.

2. I heard the built in JDBC drivers do not rely on the tsnames.ora file, is
this the case and will we need manually enter our SID name?

You need to check if summary contains a pound and if so, replace it with
## probably. Not sure if there's a function to escape pounds
automatically or not.

I've got some really cool code that is based upon a technique that works
like this...

cfsavecontent variable=displayFieldFormat
b#summary#/b
/cfsavecontent

 cfoutput query=exampleQuery
 #evaluate(de(#displayFieldFormat#))#
 /cfoutput

(Don't ask why I'm doing it this way.. it's required based on the other
things going on in my code).

I'm getting the results I want BUT once in a while, one of the
variables, summary for example, will itself contain a pound sign (#),
which is causing a problem and giving me a ...

An error occurred while evaluating the _expression_:

Can someone please give me the fix for this?

Hi,
I am going to upgrade some of our CF 5 machines and we have a few questions
we thought the CF gurus on this list may be able to answer.

1. Can we upgrade from CF 5 to CFMX for J2EE and if so will this save our
settings and migrae them like a straight CFMX upgrade would?

I'd say no to this one.I had no such luck doing this.

2. I heard the built in JDBC drivers do not rely on the tsnames.ora file, is
this the case and will we need manually enter our SID name?

Yup, no need for the Oracle client install anymore.

RE: CFHTTP returns 404 statuscode for valid URL

2004-04-19 Thread Burns, John D
They might not have a default document set for the site. They may be
catching the 404 error and redirecting based on that.If that's the
case, your status code would probably stay as 404.Not 100% sure on
that, but it's a guess.

I'm using CFHTTP as part of a link checker feature in one of our Web

even though it isn't. The URL is http://www.bart.gov, and when I open it
in my browser the site loads without any problem. However, when I run
this line of code ...

cfhttp url = "" method=get timeout=400/cfhttp

... and then ...

cfdump var=#cfhttp#

Right you are!

But, I don't want to use the templates as a dream weaver template (that is

that.

I thought the whole point of templates was that it is a template that
will be replicated on each of the pages that uses that template. So, if
you need to add something to a non-editable region, you would edit the
template file and then have the changes cascade to the pages.

On the same note. Is there a way to over ride the non editable
regions?
 We
are building contribute templates with DW and the frustrating this is
that
 I
need to open them in a text editor to make changes to them after
adding
 non
 editable regions.

Maybe some thing like a command line switch when DW loads?
 Dreamweaver.exe
 /ignorenonedit

I assume that answer is to use homesite that comes with DW. Although,
I am
 a
big homesite / CFS fan, but I have made the switch to DW. (To be
 consistent
with what the rest of the office is using) I don't like switching IDEs
mid
stream. Both apps complain that the file has been edited and want to
 reload
 it.

We do the combo of the three (CF, DW Templates, and
Contribute). But, we've found that we must include the html,
head, and body tags in all our templates, only using
cfinclude for things like navigation and design elements.
It's definitely more of a PITA. But, it's the only we've been
  able to make it work.

I've occasionally been able to get DWMX templates to work without
basic
 HTML
tags within the page, but typically to do this I have to directly edit
the
HTML comments that Dreamweaver uses to define template regions, which
is
 suboptimal to say the least.

Re: New Security Bulletin for CFMX

2004-04-19 Thread george . earl
Hey Dave...gotta link to all 19 of those?? ;-)

I think there is a rollup due later this month.

We're building a CFMX 6.1 server (Enterprise, Windows 2000 Advanced Server). Is there any method to the madness of installing the 19 or so hot fixes and security patches?

Should they be installed in chronological order based on their release dates?

Should the security patches be folded in chronologically by release date as well so that they get installed amongst the hot fixes?

Is there really a rollup coming out with all the hot fixes and security patches (if so, maybe we'll wait . . .)?

Thanks!

The order that you install them doesn't matter, but there were some hotfixes
released that override earlier hotfixes. I can't remember the list, but I
know the webservices.jar was updated in a hotfix and then subsequently
re-issued in a MM Security Bulletin.

You may as well go in order so that you can have a running checklist. At
least, that's helped in my experience. As for a rollup, again, the 3/19 post
from MM suggested there was one coming, but I've yet to hear any more about
it.

Dave.
