Re: Sean Corfield, it's time to approve my post

2006-11-30 Thread Tom Forbes
It's a cost/benefit ratio thing. CF is expensive, the past owners
have not been customer/user friendly and it has a lousy editor (DW).

If PHP existed back when CF 2 or 3 existed, there would be no
discussion, CF would not currently exist.

My 2 cents.

Re: Dreamweaver is a total big dog!!

2006-11-19 Thread Tom Forbes
Adobe and Macromedia are famous for applications that have huge overheads too.

Bring Back JJ Allaire! Java goes, Delphi stays. The last good version
of CF was 5.0

Now the package is too expensive, runs anywhere from slow to crawl,
has problems and is slowly loosing ground to PhP, IMHO.

Everyone wanted to buy it, put there own little touches on it and
then re-sell it. It is now to the point that note pad is the preferred editor.

OK - I know what you are doing - you have to click the "ADD" button in the
FILE EXTENSION MANAGER, then add your *.exe or whatever you want.

I tried it in 5.5 and Plus - works OK for me,

I tested it with a " *.exe " and it worked OK.

CF Classified Ads Program

2004-03-29 Thread Tom Forbes
Excuse me, does anyone know of a CF classifieds Ad program I can purchase?
I currently use a UNIX based one that is about 8 years old, and I would
like to switch to CF. I have not had any luck locating one, but I figure
there must be one out there.

Thanks CF'ers!

RE: Does CF Studio 4.52 get along with XP Pro or XP Home?

2003-11-10 Thread Tom Forbes
Thanks to all of you that gave me the OK to upgrade to XP with CF 4.52.
But... If I am just making web sites with cf, would you recommend XP Pro or
XP Home?

My income depends on my productivity, and when I have to re-learn a piece
of software, that reduces my productivity. In addition, I have long ago
decided I want nothing that Dream Weaver has to offer. I don't do Flash
stuff, and frankly, I don't have a high opinion of MM's techsupport.

In addition, their prices are high, and the software is not reliable or
there would be about 50% fewer posts on this board.

I'm not looking for an onslaught of opposing views here, I just like to
stick to software that I know well through years of use. If I could get a
new computer with Win98SE loaded, I would not hesitate!

Again, thank you very much for your help!

I now need to replace my computer and my question is what problems should I

Can You Suggest a GOOD Forum?

2003-06-20 Thread Tom Forbes
Dear CF'ers,

I need to acquire a CF forum and customize it by the end of June. Can
anyone with experience working with one please suggest one that will:

Work with CF4.52, Open Source, Not Beta - but time proven, Windows, Under
500.00.

I would Love to find one that has had the "polish" applied by having gone
through several versions. As you all know, not all applications that work
properly have a good feature set, look aesthetically pleasing and are
bullet-proof.

Thanks to all for your comments and suggestions!

Tom

Re: How can I "ORDER BY RANDOM" ?

2003-04-03 Thread Tom Forbes
Hi Jim,

Thanks, That did it! BUT, it works great locally with CF Studio, but when I
upload it the list does not change order. It stays with the first random
order it generated. It's not a cached query. I reload and reload, but no
change in the order. Granted, it is a random order, but it stays the same.

Any ideas here?? Sorry to be a pain.

2003-04-03 Thread Tom Forbes
Hi Benjamin,

Thanks for the good sql resource. I looked at the 7 articles, the ones that
pertain to Access are dead links. I have Access DB.

But, this site will come in very handy for other queries. Thanks very much!

This method does return a random order, but there should be 7 records
returned, and there is a random number returned!

Thanks, I tried this, and it DOES return a list in a random order every
time, BUT ... the record set is 7, and the query returns random numbers of
results, from 1 to 7! I have the following line that I modified to include
your code - could my GROUP parameter causing problems??

RE: How can I "ORDER BY RANDOM" ?

2003-04-03 Thread Tom Forbes
Hi Russ,

I did that, but I get an error stating that there is no column in the db
named SortOrder. Here is the modified query:

 SELECT CompanyTbl.*, Rnd() as SortOrder

 FROM CompanyTbl

WHERE CompanyWantsMiniSite = 'Yes' AND MakeMiniSitePublic = 'Yes'

 ORDER BY CompanyTbl.ClassOfService, SortOrder

Thanks,

Tom

How can I "ORDER BY RANDOM" ?

2003-04-03 Thread Tom Forbes
Dear CF'ers:

I have searched my CF books for a clue, but am unable to find an example of
what I am trying to do.

I need to modify the below query so that my results are still ordered by
"ClassOfService" (a number between 1 and 4) - BUT, the "CompanyName" needs
to be displayed in a RANDOM ORDER each time the query is run, rather than
its current alphabetical order. This will give all companies that
participate an even advantage of being selected rather than those that
begin with the first letters of the alphabet.

Can someone please point me in the right direction? I have studied the CF
RANDOM tag but can't figure out how to apply it.

 SELECT *

 FROM CompanyTbl

WHERE CompanyWantsMiniSite = 'Yes' AND MakeMiniSitePublic = 'Yes'

 ORDER BY CompanyTbl.ClassOfService, CompanyTbl.CompanyName

Thanks very much!!

Tom Forbes

Re: CFOUTPUT group by & recordcount HELP

2002-12-10 Thread Tom Forbes
Dear Dina Hess,

Thank you very much for taking the time this morning to help me with this
Query/RecordCount problem. There is NO WAY I would have come to this
solution on my own. I have since read up on column aliases, aggregate
functions and loops so that I can understand how this works. I have tested
it on my db, and it runs great - no tweaking!

You made it possible for me to get the problem solved, and I learned a lot
in the process.

Thanks again for your excellent help, and have a very happy Holiday.

Tom

CFOUTPUT group by & recordcount HELP

2002-12-09 Thread Tom Forbes
I have checked my books and the CF achieve, but need a little help in the
right direction, please.

I have a db table that contains, among other things, Domain Names and about
20 Different Domain Name Categories. I want to Output the results of this
db table by GROUPING the Domain Name Categories (I got that to work) and
next to the Category I would like to use the RecordCount parameter of the
Query to indicate how many Domain Names in each category. The problem with
the code below is that the RecordCount parameter returns the TOTAL number
of categories, not the Total Number of Categories for each particular
Domain Name.

I would greatly appreciate any help. Thanks!

I have:

 SELECT *
 FROM DomainCategoryTbl,DomainNamesTbl
WHERE DomainCategoryTbl.DomainCategoryID=DomainNamesTbl.DomainCategoryID
ORDER By DomainCategory, DomainName

and for the output I have:

Category: #DomainCategory# - #GroupDomainCategories.RecordCount#

#DomainName#

Re: Very disturbing rumors from macromedia that threaten cold fusion

It seems to be a rather HOT TOPIC - why don't I see any evidence of this
discussion on the cf-community side??

Can Michael Dinowitz explain this phenomena before he takes the matter and

simply converts it into additional entropy?

This is not a one year old rumor. It was posted today at

RE: OT (was: Macromedia.com)

2002-01-30 Thread Tom Forbes

You're Right! After 56 posts regarding this topic in the last 3 days, let's

just move it to a different board so fewer people are exposed to it. That
should help - but first

11:10AM Macromedia layoff/takeover rumors (MACR) 17.80 -0.20: Website
f@#!ckedcompany.com, known best for its accurate layoff rumors, reports
today that layoffs are imminent at MACR, but also notes unsubstantiated
rumors that the company is in discussions with Microsoft (MSFT), hinting at

a sale of all or part of the company.

What Could This Mean???

Re: Macromedia.com

2002-01-30 Thread Tom Forbes

Mr. Stevenson,

Your comments, in my opinion, do a fairly inadequate job of sweeping the
past, current and future concerns voiced by this forum, under the carpet.

Your lifetime experience regarding these very issues indicates you are
quite naive to the course of the future of MM and CF. When the CF
principals sold the small stock holders of their company down the river,
thus creating the huge down gap in price and even huger monetary losses, it

should have been evident to you that you and other CF'ers were going to
begin to whistle a new tune, the MM Company tune.

Is CF Dead, no, but it is dying. No problem for you though Bryan, As you so

just stated "If CF dies we all know how to develop web applications and can

apply that knowledge to a new language." What a great solution!

In my opinion, your title should be "VP & Director of E-Commerce
Development and Solutions" - you could be the VP of one and the Director of

the other.

Good Luck

IP Address Blocking

2001-12-20 Thread Tom Forbes

I am unable to learn through any of my CF books if it is possible to block
a specific IP address from viewing a .cfm page.

Has anyone out there either done this before, or could possibly point me in
the right direction?

Re: Mailing List Server/Bulk Mailer

2001-09-12 Thread Tom Forbes

You may want to take a look at http://www.mailermailer.com/ a try. Opt
in/out, double opt in/out, lots of features, web based and priced according
to the volume of mail per month.

You can upload current database e-mail lists in either comma or tab
delimited format. No contracts to sign. They give you the code to paste
into your page.

So far it has worked well for me. You can use it for free for an unlimited
amount of time providing your list does not exceed 200.

The To: line in CF MAIL - are spaces problems?

2001-09-12 Thread Tom Forbes

Dear CF'ers,

We are having an intermittent problem with the spool - it seems to "Freeze"
about twice a day, with varying numbers of messages in que. The fix is to
cycle the CF Server. We have CF4.51 SP2, Win2K - shared environment.

Will an unnecessary "space" in the To: line cause this. Some addresses are
"[EMAIL PROTECTED],[EMAIL PROTECTED]" while others are separated with a
space such as: "[EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Thanks,

Tom

The link below doesn't work for me, and a search of

Is this a joke? The tag sounds too good to be true. Any ideas?

How to Auto-Send email Every 10 Min?

2001-08-25 Thread Tom Forbes

Good Evening,
I suspect my ISP is loosing mail, the mail server stops and I have to call
and tell them to cycle the CF Server - then all is well, but most of the
time I loose what was in the spool.

I would like to use to auto send myself an e-mail every 10 min or
so. Doing this, I could tell if the server was down by not receiving the
message. I can not use the CF SCHEDULE TAG. How could I do this in a simple
fashion??

Thank You - I would appreciate any help.

Exploding "Main Frame"

2001-07-20 Thread Tom Forbes

Dear CF'ers,

I created a frames based directory,
http://medsearch.medmatrix.com/explore/category2website.htm that has a
problem with the "main" or "bottom right" window. Some sites are very
unruly and are not confined within the "MAIN" window - they break out and
take up the entire screen. Very Rude!

I have searched my Javascript Goodies book, as well as the
www.javascripts.com site. I believe there must be a way to constrain these
wild pages, but for the life of me I can not figure it out.

Anyone have a similar problem at one time that they would not mind sharing
the solution to??

Thank You Very Much,

Tom Forbes

Re: Dynamic Table Height

2001-06-01 Thread Tom Forbes

Guy,

Create a 2 cell table consisting of a right and left cell. Assign one cell
the dynamic contents, and the other the static contents. Set VALIGN = TOP.
As the dynamic cell grows in height, the adjacent static cell will also
grow in height. As the dynamic cell shrinks in height it will stop
shrinking once it equals the minimum static cell height. This is because
the two cells are in the same "ROW" - - - - Hope this helps.

Example:

 Static Cell
 Dynamic Cell

RE: Hyphen Use in CF 4.52

2001-03-22 Thread Tom Forbes

Thanks Steve! I learned from experimenting that database names and
datasource names MAY contain a hyphen, regardless of CF version. CF version
2 allowed a hyphen in the query name, but beginning with version 3, hyphens
are not allowed - just underscores.

Thanks,

RE: banner ad weighting....

Good idea ... sort of like a look-up table.

Classified Ads Application

2000-04-13 Thread Tom Forbes

Dear CF'ers

Can anyone our there recommend an industrial strength classified ad
application, preferable written in CF?

The FusionFX one is in long term beta - I'll pass - I bought the V1
package, it never worked right, and here we are a year later, no progress
on B2 or interest in completting it for that matter.

I appreciate anything you folks may be able to recommend to me.

Re: HELP: banner ad weighting factors....

2000-04-12 Thread Tom Forbes

Mark -

How about an array or look-up table. I did this successfully with a Monte
Carlo simulation I wrote to address queing theory. Was that a dry project.
A weighted randomly generated number would designate the probability of an
event. Your columns can be probibility (30% = .3) and so on.

Rotating Banner Tag

2000-03-27 Thread Tom Forbes

Fellow CF'ers:

Could I please take advantage of the collective experience of you folks
once again?

Given: I have a medical equipment portal that consists of .cfm and .htm
templates - and they are spread out across 3 domains.

Problem: I would like to discontinue a JavaScript banner rotating program
that is in place, as it generates zero data and is mostly capable of random
display and redirection. I know that there are several (many) CF tags that
accomplish this, but I am unfamiliar with them.

Question: I would like to know which tag you would use, based on ease of
installation, and ease of Admin. The tag would live on an NT server, and
would need to be able to function on both .htm and .cfm templates across 3
domains. It doesn't have to be free, and in fact, the "right one" will not
be. I am familiar with the CF Tag Gallery, but it seems that, because I
have a limited amount of CF ability, when I try to use some of the tags I
am unable to get them to function properly because I can not set them up
correctly. I need something that is ready to go, right out of the box so to
speak.

What would you ladies and gentlemen recommend, and where do I go to get it?

Thank you very much for your time and consideration. Have a great week!

Tom
