RE: Need help with XML to JavaScript

2005-07-26 Thread Warrick, Mark
That complex of a job, huh? Ideally I'd just like to learn how to do it on
my own so any links to resources, how-tos, etc would be great.

My other option is to just host a subdomain for every other website that
wants to use our data. I already know how to do that. But what I really
would like to do is to provide a simple cut and paste piece of JavaScript
code much like how the many various news sources provide for news feed
integration into other websites and/or something similar to how websites
like Ebay provide JavaScript code (example at savetheangels.com) to less
experienced webmasters who may not fully understand how to intergrate XML
data into their own websites or who do not have the technical capabilities
to do so.

CFMAIL Zero Byte File Problem - ColdFusion 5.0

2004-11-16 Thread Warrick, Mark
Hello All,

I'm getting desperate for a solution here. I will give the first person
who helps me solve this problem two tickets to the movies.

I recently moved all my code from a ColdFusion 4.5 enterprise environment
to a ColdFusion 5.0 enterprise environment. Nothing about the code has
changed.

When I run any CFMAIL tags, the following problem occurs intermittently:

unknown exception condition

TagCFMail::sendMessage

Once the problem occurs once, a zero byte CFMAIL file is created in the
CFUSION/SPOOL directory, and from then on no more message can be sent and
this error continues forever until I shut down the server, delete all the
zero byte files, and restart it.

I've tried all of the following suggestions which I've found through my
many hours of google research.

1) Make sure that the CF Server has full permissions to access to all the
CFUSION/MAIL directories and that they all exist. - DONE
2) Install the SMTP patch and restart server. (Macromedia Article:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/coldfusion/ts/documents/tn17552.htm) - DONE
3) Set registry entry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Allaire\ColdFusion\
CurrentVersion\Mail to a higher value - DONE - tried all the way up to
3000. Does not solve the problem.
4) Make sure you have installed all of the Hotfixes for ColdFusion 5.0 - DONE
5) Make sure there is enough disk space - 10 GB free - DONE
6) Make sure that you have a valid mail server in the administrator
settings and that you have permission to access it. - DONE
7) Try specifying an SMTP server in the CFMAIL code. - DONE No change.

Again, I know this subject has been discussed many times before, but I've
dug pretty deep through MANY different archives and so far I can't find a
solution.

Please help.

XML Feed for Amazon w/ColdFusion 4.5 Enterprise

Has anyone succesfully tied their system into Amazon's XML feed with

RE: motherboards and RAM

2001-07-17 Thread Warrick, Mark

Check your motherboard manual for specific RAM configurations. In general,
I think you can safely assume that if your motherboard is over 2 years old,
it most likely won't support 1GB of RAM because 512MB chips we pretty hard
to get and were very expensive then. Now they're going for about $150 or
less at Fry's.

If you need a new motherboard, don't go cheap. Get the board that has the
greatest expandability options. I recomend Intel chipsets. IWILL boards
are awesome. I would recommend an IWILL board with SCSI adapters built in.
You'll end up paying about $500 for the board, but you'll be able to do a
lot more and you'll be able to use it much much longer vs. a cheap board
that you'll likely have to replace in less than 2 years.

Totally OT, so apologies. I notice that alot of people talk about having 1GB
RAM.

Well, I bought 512Mb more today, went to fit it, and then, after lots of
muckinf about, discovered that my motherboard only supportd upto 512MB RAM.

Is this normal? Is my only way around this to buy a new motherboard? This is
another world to me, but some of you clever people out there might know.

TIA

install problem on NT 2000

2001-02-16 Thread Warrick, Mark

Hello All,

Here's the challenge of the day. I have a CF45Pro CD in Oakland, CA. I've
transferred the install files to a web server in Georgia and I'm controlling that
server via PC Anywhere. I know that the CF45Pro install program will work without the
CD because I tried it here in Oakland, and it works fine. But when I run the install
prog on the machine in Georgia via PC Anywhere, the program starts and the indicator
hits 99% (program load) and then dies.

I've check the permissions on the server in Georgia to ensure I'm running the install
prog under an Administrator account - and that's fine.

So... anyone got any clues as to why the install prog would just die upon start?

Please copy me directly as the matter is kind of urgent. Thanks! And did I mention
the free movie tickets (2) for anyone that gives the right answer? :)

slightly OT - Remote SQL installations

2001-02-15 Thread Warrick, Mark

Hello,

I have to setup a box that lives 3,000 miles away from me. I'll be using PC Anywhere
to control the server remotely. I know I can install ColdFusion server from a file
and all the various patches I'll need, but I'm not so sure about SQL 7.0. I've always
installed SQL straight from the CD. Does anyone know if it's possible to copy all the
files off the SQL 7 CD and to a remote installation?

Please copy me directly.

Thanks.

RE: CF number question

2001-02-14 Thread Warrick, Mark

Yes, ColdFusion will intepret that as a number.

For example, try this:

TRUE

False

TRUE

False

True

False

Note that generally when something is surrounded by quotes, it's a text object, but in
this case since the value is a number, it will be evaluated as a number.

Sort of OT: ColdFusion Studio - any temp files?

2001-02-12 Thread Warrick, Mark

Hello,

After working about 4 hours on a rather extensive error-checking template and saving
religiously every time I made a change, my system suddenly lost power. Upon
restarting, the file I had been working on was blank. And although its size was "6k"
there was no data in the file.

I've since then started rebuilding the template, but I'd like to know if anyone knows
of any files that ColdFusion Studio creates while it's working kind of like how MS
Word does the autosave thing. I know that at least with MS Word there's temp files
laying around that you can access and not lose all your work.

It's actually pretty scary to think that CF Studio would waste the file like that. If
I had all the templates I was working on today open at that time, I'll bet they would
all be wasted!

Any clues?

Please copy me directly.

Thanks.

RE: Remoting and Location of CFML Files

2001-01-19 Thread Warrick, Mark

You should place the CFM files on the same server that the COldFusion server is on.
Sure it's possible to use a webserver A to map a network drive to webserver B running
ColdFusion scripts, but that's subject to internal network failures and is ill
advised. Heck, you could even create an ODBC connection to an Access database stored
on a remote server, but you'll have the same networking issues.

The Internet and networking in general are subject to frequent fluctuations and
interruptions in service. If you want a web site that's going to stay up, put all the
HTML and CF coding on the same server.

Hopefully that helps.

RE: Apache web server

2001-01-17 Thread Warrick, Mark

If you're talking about a browser-requested password, then your problem lies with your
Apache web server. Consult your Apache documentation on how to secure (or not secure
in this case) your web server.

If you're seeing the CF Administrator login page and you've forgotten your password,
you can reset it by either reinstalling ColdFusion, or by changing the registry value
of the "UseAdminPassword" key. In doing so, you'll be able to access the CF
Administrator pages without logging in.

Open up regedit
Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - SOFTWARE - Allaire - ColdFusion - CurrentVersion -
Server

In the right column, you will see the UseAdminPassword key and you'll notice that it's
value is set to "1".

Double click on the UseAdminPassword key to edit its value.

Change the value to 0 and click OK.

Now, reload the CF Administrator login page in your web browser. You'll automatically
be taken to the CF Administrator main menu. Be sure to reset the security settings in
the CF Administrator.

RE: Putting a temporary hold on a quantity

2001-01-17 Thread Warrick, Mark

I think your problem is more of a policy issue than a programming issue. What you're
trying to do is create logic to account for exceptions. I think the problem would be
better solved through management decisions than programatic decisions.

Consider this:

When a customer places an order, it is based upon inventory levels you believe to be
accurate to the best of your knowledge. Even if the computer says one thing and the
inventory clerks say the same thing, that doesn't mean that the product is actually
sitting on the shelf nor does it mean that the product is in deliverable condition.
With that in mind, you should only update the actual inventory levels once the product
has been shipped.

If you want to keep track of the order quantities vs. the actual quantity on hand - go
ahead! Once the order quantities exceed the last known inventory level, advise the
customer that the product MIGHT have to be on backorder and explain your policy on
backorders.

Programatic functions of flushing out bad orders should solve the problem of resetting
the order quantities on their own, and so the next customer ordering the same product
would not receive the backorder notice if there is sufficient quantity on hand.

I may be revealing my ignorance of Oracle here, but doesn't the BLOB (as opposed to

RE: Varaible Names with "-"

2001-01-17 Thread Warrick, Mark

This probably isn't the answer you're looking for, but you should rename the column.
That's just plain bad database design to begin with. And there's no need to add on
another layer of unnecessary programming when all you've gotta do is rename the field.

There's an example of how to do this (minus the DB update) in the CFDIRECTORY docs
which were included with your copy of ColdFusion server.

No, there's no reason that CF shouldn't be used to create something like Hotmail. In

RE: CF and FrontPage

2001-01-17 Thread Warrick, Mark

DON'T DO IT! Keep FrontPage and ColdFusion development environements COMPLETELY
separate. FrontPage will jack up your code.

If you have to use something WYSIWYG, use DreamWeaver. (a Macromedia product - go
figure) which doesn't harm CF code at all.

RE: duplicating inserts

2001-01-17 Thread Warrick, Mark

There are many ways to prevent duplicate submissions. One way would be to use
javascript to reset the history so that the back button would be (sort of) disabled.
Read about that here: http://developer.irt.org/script/311.htm

Another way is to assign a unique ID ("createUUID()")to the user, carry that value
through forms and URLs, and then record the unique ID upon submitting the contents of
the form and the time it happened. Create some arbitrary number like "user cannot do
the same function twice within x seconds" and then do a date compare prior to
inserting the record to figure out if a record has been entered within x seconds by
the current user.

If you wanted, you could check all fields in the table against the form data and the
unique id to detect duplicates.

You can also use the pragma-nocache function to expire the form so that even if the
user backs up, all the contents of the form will be lost, but this doesn't work on all
browsers.

The multiple CFLOCATION trick might also work well. Use several of them so that if
the user tries to back up, they'll have to back up several times. Logic would tell
most people that if they have to back up that many times, they probably shouldn't be
doing it.

Ultimately, a user will find ways to get around all this, but I think you're simply
trying to avoid mistakes, and a combination of all of the above will most likely
reduce that error ratio down considerably.

RE: calling a cfm script into a html page

2001-01-17 Thread Warrick, Mark

If you're running IIS, you can map all HTML files to be processed by the ColdFusion
server.

Open up the MMC (Microsoft Management Console).
Right click on the default web site.
Click the Home Directory tab.
Then click the Configuration button.
Notice how .cfm files and .dbm files are mapped to the \cfusion\bin\iscf.dll program.
Duplicate that mapping for .htm and .html files as applicable.

The downside to doing this is that all the .htm and .html pages would now be processed
through the ColdFusion application server, creating a slight bit of extra overhead for
the server. The upside is that you can leave your templates named the way they are
and include cf templates at will.

RE: Window 95 Log?

2001-01-17 Thread Warrick, Mark

There is nothing contained within the Windows 95 operating system that will log
logins. There is also nothing within the OS to protect files.

There are, however, various programs which you could install that can run as
background processes that monitor the user's activities, but even those could be
easily disabled by the user.

The only way to truly protect your machine is to use an operating system such as
Windows NT that has built in security. But still for logging, I believe you're going
to need a 3rd party logging application.

Sounds like you've got other code which is appending the URLs or the string you are

RE: Date problem

2001-01-17 Thread Warrick, Mark

I think the proper approach to this problem would be to provide an example of the
proper date format next to the input field, perhaps even pre-popluating the field with
today's date in the proper format.

Then on the page it submits to, use the IsDate() function to determine whether the
date is correctly formatted.

RE: Conditional loops

2001-01-16 Thread Warrick, Mark

Yes, you can do conditional loops.

Check the docs
http://127.0.0.1/cfdocs/CFML_Language_Reference/2_ColdFusion_Tags/lr2_054..htm

Example from docs:

The following example increments the parameter "CountVar" from 1 to 5. The results
look exactly like the Index loop example.

The loop index is #CountVar#.

The result of this loop in a browser would look something like:

The loop index is 1.
The loop index is 2.
The loop index is 3.
The loop index is 4.
The loop index is 5.

RE: Unable to Verify ODBC

2001-01-16 Thread Warrick, Mark

Sure.

Open up the Services applet in the Control Panel. Click on the ColdFusion Application
Server, then Startup.

Look at the "Log On As" options. The simplest way to solve this problem is to make
sure that you're using the System Account.

Do the same for the other ColdFusion services: Executive & RDS.

Now I'm assuming that the DSN you're trying to hook up is for an Access database.
Find that MDB file on the server and check it's permissions by right-clicking on it,
choosing properties, then security, then permissions.

If you used the SYSTEM account for the services, then it won't matter what permissions
are applied here, but if you used any other account, make sure that same account has
full control of the MDB file.

Hopefully this helps. Basically, to sum it all up, don't screw with the account
settings unless you understand Windows NT security!

RE: Unable to Verify ODBC

2001-01-16 Thread Warrick, Mark

If you're able to run ODBC connectivity tests through the control panel with no
problems, but not with the CF Administrator, then you probably have a
permissions/security conflict. Make sure that the ColdFusion server is running as a
SYSTEM account or some other account that has permission to access those datasources.

RE: ColdFusion Newsgroup

2001-01-16 Thread Warrick, Mark

Allaire caters to big businesses. That is evident by the high sticker price of being
a partner with them. They don't offer any sort of partnerships with individual
developers (last time I checked).

You cannot use body tags in frameset pages. That's why it's blank.

If you came to me and told me you were Allaire certified, how would I verify that you

RE: CF 4.0.1 and Oracle 8i

2001-01-01 Thread Warrick, Mark

I don't think you can use the Professional edition of 4.01 with Oracle unless you have
some special drivers that don't come with either CF or Oracle. (I've tried to do the
same thing before with no luck.) The solution to the problem was to upgrade to the
Enterprise edition.

Try running ANY query on the Oracle DB. I'm pretty sure nothing is going to work.

No, what he was saying is that if you want to mail text, just include it in the body

If you need to include a text file, use CFINCLUDE within the body of the CFMAIL.

RE: CFMAIL

2000-12-28 Thread Warrick, Mark

You're right Howie. The text should be included in the body of the message. Sorry, I
thought that was obvious.

RE: Whats the deal with the tag ?

2000-12-28 Thread Warrick, Mark

That tag has nothing to do with Fusebox at all. It's an HTML tag, and it is used so
that you don't have to specify a target attribute in each of your links if you're
using frames or want to open up links into other windows.

RE: One step method to check then increment a value in db?

2000-12-28 Thread Warrick, Mark

I'm sure there's several custom tags to do this which might be better than my
suggestion, but it's simple to do with 2 queries contained within a CFTRANSACTION.

Example (assuming you have an auto increment field named "id_whatever":

INSERT INTO whatever_table (whatever_columns)
VALUES ('#whatever_data#')

SELECT MAX (id_whatever) as newid
FROM whatever_table

#max.newid#

RE: CFMAIL

2000-12-28 Thread Warrick, Mark

It sounds like your end user doesn't understand how to use email. I would first start
with educating them on how to use their email client properly. There's nothing wrong
with this method of sending email. If you want to send text only, put it in the body
of the message.

RE: CFMAIL

2000-12-28 Thread Warrick, Mark

I have a form which sends an email message to a user an which can have an attachment.

You would obviously first have to have an upload form, but to actually mail the
attachment, I use this code:

#message_body#

RE: Vacation Form (LONG RESPONSE)

2000-12-28 Thread Warrick, Mark

Hello Isabelle,

This is actually alot simpler than it seems.

Here's some brief example specs on this application. You should expand upon these to
suit your needs.

Tables needed:

CONTACTS

ID_CONTACT (PK: AUTO INC INT)
FNAME (VARCHAR)
MNAME (VARCHAR)
LNAME (VARCHAR)
SSN (VARCHAR)
EMAIL (VARCHAR)

CONTACT_TYPES (manager, employee, etc.)

ID_CONTACT_TYPE (PK: AUTO INC INT)
CONTACT_TYPE (VARCHAR)

CONTACT_TYPES_TO_CONTACTS (a person might be a part of several different types)

ID_CONTACT_TYPE (INT)
ID_CONTACT (INT)

MANAGERS_EMPLOYEES

ID_MANAGER (FK: ID_CONTACT)
ID_EMPLOYEE (FK: ID_CONTACT)

VACATION_REQUESTS

ID_VACATION_REQUEST (PK: AUTO INC INT)
DT_REQUEST_DATE (DATE/TIME)
ID_EMPLOYEE (FK: ID_CONTACT) (INT)
ID_MANAGER (FK: ID_CONTACT) (INT)
DT_VACATION_START_DATE (DATE/TIME)
DT_VACATION_END_DATE (DATE/TIME)
PENDING (INT)
APPROVED (INT)
TAKEN (INT)

STEP 1: IDENTIFY THE USER
You need to know who the employee is, so you'll to have them "login". This can be
done with a login form that asks for their name and possibly the last 4 digits of
their SSN (or something like that). Run a query on the contacts table to verify their
identity. Then set session var session.id_contact and CFLOCATION to the vacation form.

STEP 2: FIND OUT WHO THIS PERSON'S MANAGER IS
Based upon the session._id_contact, run a query on the MANAGERS_EMPLOYEES table to
find out which manager is assigned to this user. Join that query to the contacts
table to retrieve their name for display on the form. (This may not be necessary.)

Insert the vacation data into the table, making sure that the following default column
values are used: PENDING=1, APPROVED=0, TAKEN=0.

NOTE: STEP 3 could be combined with step 2.

STEP 3: CREATE A SCRIPT TO SEARCH THROUGH PENDING VACATIONS
Create a query which searches the vacations table for all rows where the pending
column = 1.

Run the same query as described in step 2 to figure out which manager is assigned to
this employee.

Now based upon the results of the two queries above, create a CFMAIL script containing
all the contents of the vacation request form which will be sent to the manager.

STEP 4: CFSCHEDULED EVENT
Create a cfschedule for step 3. The pro of using a cfschedule is that you can
continously notify the managers about pending vacation requets until they log in to
ths system and do something about it! The con is that they'll continue to receive
messages until they do something about it. Depending upon how often you want to nag
the managers will determine what regularity you run the script. You could also skip
this step and simply combine step 2 & 3.

STEP 5: MANAGING THE VACATION REQUESTS
So now that the manager has been notified, they'll need to login and approve or not
approve the form. They login in the same manner as described above for employees.
Based upon their session.id_contact, run a query on the managers_employees table and
then a query on the vacations table to figure out whether this manager has any
employees requesting vacations. Based upon those results, create a list of vacation
requests. Each vacation requets links to the vacation authorization form which is
dynamically populated based upon a query you'll run to populate it.

The vacation authorization form should not allow the manager to do anything excpet
change values for the following:
APPROVED?
TAKEN?

Note that the user does not change the pending value because that will be done
automatically when you update the record. (Set the PENDING=0)

STEP 6: STATUS NOTIFICATIONS
Finally, using similar logic as described in steps 2,3, and 4, send notifications to
whomever.

Hopefully this gives you a nice jump start.

RE: Repeat Question still needing help

2000-12-27 Thread Warrick, Mark

The file uploading and transfering to another site can be handled with CFFTP.

The querying of a remote datasource could be handled with XML, WDDX, and possibly
CFHTTP if you can load a script onto the remote server with CFFTP (or whatever).

RE: cfmail and aol addresses

2000-12-27 Thread Warrick, Mark

Is it possible you've been banned from sending email to the AOL network? Try sending
someone on AOL an email with a normal email client. See what happens.

It's also highly probable that the messages are actually getting there - just very
slowly.

I'm curious. What does CFFILE have to do with a remote database?

Perhaps you could explain the problem in more detail?

Maybe you've even got a technical spec? (crosses his fingers)

RE: Repeat Question still needing help

2000-12-27 Thread Warrick, Mark

It is possible to setup a datasource on your local CF server to a remote database so
long as you somehow have access to it. For example, if the remote server is a SQL
server, then you simply enter in the connection string into the datasource options &
there you go - it'll work (with some performance degradation) as though it was on the
same box.

Let's say that a remote server has an Access database on it. Well, in this case, you
would have to have a UNC path to the remote drive and then you could setup the remote
MDB file as a local datasource.

I'm certain that there's a way to exchange data with XML or WDDX but I'll leave those
tutorials up to the experts in those areas. I'd be curious to know how one would
connect to a remote MDB file without a UNC connection.

Set it up as an ODBC datasource on the server from which you are making requests and
run a query against it.

RE: javascript problem

2000-12-26 Thread Warrick, Mark

Try surrounding the logic with a CFIF statement to exclude processing if the template
name contains "login.cfm" and see what happens.

Also, I'm not sure about the second javascript call you've got there - the focus call.
That may have something to do with it.

RE: little help here?

2000-12-22 Thread Warrick, Mark

To simplfy things, I would first run two queries - one for the "yes" images and one
for the "no" images. Then I would output those two queries into their respective
columns.

To make the images display 3 across, set a count when you start outputting the images.
Evaluate the count upon each subsequent record output, and when you get to 3, put in
the appropriate (or line break) and reset the count. You would also want to
evaluate the total recordcount to be sure you close off the table tags correctly.

For example:

Just to play the devil's advocate here, a system without technical documentation is a
poorly written system to begin with. It doesn't matter at that point HOW it was
written.

RE: Page Tracking & hits :: User Movments on an Intranet

2000-12-22 Thread Warrick, Mark

Ooops yes, of course.

You can use the #script_name# variable.

And if you want to do it fusebox style, you can use the following logic instead:

SELECT * FROM counter
WHERE page = '#page#'

INSERT INTO counter (page,hits)
VALUES ('#page#', 2)

1

#gethits.hits#

UPDATE counter
SET hits = #newhits#
WHERE page = '#page#'

Session variables will remain persistent even if a user goes to another site and they
will remain pesistent as long as they are not timed out either due to coding or

RE: Page Tracking & hits :: User Movments on an Intranet

2000-12-21 Thread Warrick, Mark

Hi Paul,

I really don't think there is a tutorial. You can use the code below as an example.
This is the easiest way to track visitors. You would include this into every
template. (by the way, this has nothing to do with server logs)

(of course you'll need to create a database for this)

INSERT INTO access_log (
ip,
login_date,
login_time)
VALUES (
'#ip#',
'#login_date#',
'#login_time#')

RE: Page Tracking & hits :: User Movments on an Intranet

2000-12-20 Thread Warrick, Mark

The anonymous way would be to assign a random ID to each new visitor and then record
that ID with every page view (or fuseaction) into a database or text file.

The membership-based way would be to have a user login & then track them the same way.

RE: Fusebox

2000-12-20 Thread Warrick, Mark

The fusebox methodology has many benefits, and I really don't think it adds any time
to the development cycle. In fact, I'm pretty sure it helps speed up development.

One of the greatest advantages of the style is that you can modularize you code, and
in doing so, you can assign pieces of your application to various developers without
worrying about them stepping on each other's toes.

Another advantage is that because it is a documented approach to programming, the next
programmers won't have to decipher your unique style in order to pick up where you
left off.

Another advantage is that certain companies (such as mine) require it. So if you
don't do it, you're not going to get a job with certain companies.

Lastly, it's very simple to follow the programming flow of a fusebox app. When
something goes wrong, you simply search for the fuseaction in the index file and then
you'll see right away all the templates in a single handy block that could be involved
with the problem.

I'm sure the folks on the Fusebox list would be happy to help you more with this.

Current Date: #today#

Current Day of the Week: #today_dow#

Days to beginning of week: #days_to_week_begin#

RE: (SQL) Date column x year column

I'm not certain whether this can even be done with SQL. What I would do is use
ColdFusion for the calculations and based upon your logic below, either display or not
display the records.

RE: cfloop help (new)

2000-12-19 Thread Warrick, Mark

Actually, I think what you need to read up on is how to "Browse Next N records". In
Ben Forta's ColdFusion Web Application Construction Kit (version 4.0) it takes Ben
about 8 pages of text to describe how this works. Does your book have that same
tutorial? Does anyone have a tutorial on the web for this?

To summarize, what you need to do is pass the record staring points and maxrows counts
between each search results view. The counts are based upon the total number of
records in the results set and the max number of records per page.

Not sure about the attributes (I would like to know as well), but you can get the
column list by doing the following:

SELECT *

RE: Shopping Cart

2000-12-19 Thread Warrick, Mark

AbleCommerce is a nice out-of-the-box solution. (http://www.ablecommerce.com) - It
requires no ColdFusion knowledge to maintain.

I haven't tried this one, but it's cheaper than AbleCommerce: http://www.cartease.com/

If you want to "roll your own" you might try this tutorial:
http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/99/49/index4a.html?tw=programming

I'm sure there's more. These just came off the top of my head.

RE: profiles.

2000-11-12 Thread Warrick, Mark

If you cannot use cookies, then you have to maintain state by passing some sort of key
between all URL calls and form fields which looks up the current user's "profile" in a
database. This works fine, but it will slow down the system a little bit. Imagine
having to call the database upon every page load - that may not seem like a big deal,
but put a hundred people on it, and you'll notice.

My advice:

Setup a web site which demostrates your skills. If you can demonstrate that you are

RE: mailmerge witth sql server database

2000-11-08 Thread Warrick, Mark

Yes, you can use a SQL database or any ODBC compliant DB or just about any type of
file. This has absolutely nothing at all to do with ColdFusion whatsoever.

I'm not sure why you would wan to use ColdFusion to do this when MS Word handles it so
well.

Anyone ever seen this one?

ODBC Error Code = 01004 (Data truncated)
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Fractional truncation

On that note, does anyone have a list of Microsoft SQL Error Codes?

Please copy me with your reply.

RE: Potential problems with "FREE" Server

2000-11-07 Thread Warrick, Mark

OK licensing issues aside, I think what you are asking for is a comparison sheet of
the features between CF Express and the pay for version CF Pro or Enteprise.

I'm sure Allaire would be happy to provide that information if you call them and
explain your situation.

In the mean time though, you can read the release notes and data sheets for each
product side by side.

For CF Express:

CF Pro:

RE: Potential problems with "FREE" Server

2000-11-06 Thread Warrick, Mark

Gee let's think about this for a second. LICENSING ISSUES? Your ISP cannot legally
use "free" software longer than the evaluation period. And I really don't think
Allaire would be too happy to know that their eval copies are being used for a FOR
PROFIT server.

You'll have to reinstall ColdFusion every time the eval copy runs out. You'll
probably lose all the mappings and CF server settings in the process each time you do
that.

Why is switching hosting companies not an option?

I would use a date/time field in the database. I would use CreateODBCDateTime(Now())
for date/time stamps. And I would use DateDiff for time comparisons.

Dump all of your log files. Optimize your databases. Scandisk your hard drives.
Take a look into Allaire's documentation on their site about performance tuning.

RE: Slightly OT: Cable Modem and TZO

2000-10-24 Thread Warrick, Mark

Hi Debbie,

I'm also an @Home user. @Home users are not allowed to host web sites - not even if
you have a business class account. Besides that, you don't want to host a web site on
your server at home because the bandwidth is throttled at 128K on the uploads. So if
you had any more than a few users on the site at a time, it would slow down
considerably.

Also, @Home does not guarantee that the IP address you have today will be good
tomorrow. In fact they discourage the user of static IPs for that very reason. It
doesn't mean you cannot map a domain name to that IP (you can). It just means that
you'll have to contact your ISP who hosts your DNS entries every time the IP changes.
Now on the good side of this note, in the whole time I've been a user of @home, (about
18 months) the only time my IP changed was when I moved from one house to another.

Now, this doesn't mean you cannot use your server at home for demos. You most
certainly can. And although the people at @home specifically banned this type of
usage, they're not out to get you. They don't have the time or manpower to police all
the ports of every machine. They will only terminate your service if you abuse it -
for example by hosting a web site at home.

And sorry, I've never heard of TZO.

Try this when outputting data which you feel should contain paragraph breaks:

#Replace(message_body, "#CHR(10)#", "", "ALL")#

RE: CF in permanent infinite restart loop

2000-10-24 Thread Warrick, Mark

Sounds like you've got a bad script on the server somewhere which is causing an
infinite loop and locking up the server.

Dont use mailto. Use a form instead. That way, you won't be launching any other

Check the developer's gallery at Allaire for a tag called CFX_HTTP. It'll do the job

RE: fusebox style: too much disk access?

2000-10-20 Thread Warrick, Mark

Yeah, but hey isn't it cool when you explain your methodology to a client and bad
mouth all us anal-retentive Fuseboxers and somehow look like you totally know what
you're doing? (I'm totally kidding, of course.)

I find that no matter what your methodology is, if someone else can easily understand
and adopt it, then it is truely valuable because that provides added value to the
service that we all provide. Imagine how many times you've picked up an application
after someone else and wished you could understand their logic.

Set the string of emails dynamically and use that variable as to="#email_string#".
Also, output that string to the screen before you commit to going nuts trying to
figure out what's wrong. And have a Jolt Coke. :)

CFCONTENT download name

2000-10-20 Thread Warrick, Mark

I'm trying to create an MS Word doc based upon a query and information entered on a
form preceeding this report processing template.

In the processing template I've tried using:

The query runs, but all the information I entered in the form preceeding it is lost.

I've tried using:

This works. The query data and all the info from the preceeding form are there, and a
download prompt comes up in the browser.

HOWEVER, the initial filename in the download prompt is the name of the CFML template
which processed it (reports.cfm).

I want the name of the file that shows up in that download prompt to be report.doc so
that the user won't have to think about about naming the file correctly when they
select a place to save it.

I've tried the technique suggested by Borkman Lee:
http://servername/cfdocs/index.cfm/xyz.doc?fuseaction=showWordDoc

It doesn't work on my server.

Does anyone else know how to do this?

Please copy me on your reply as the list sometimes take a few hours to send messages
to me.

Thanks!

OH, and by the way - the first person to answer this correctly is going to get 2 free
movie tickets.

RE: Output to File, a lot of white space

2000-10-20 Thread Warrick, Mark

Start all files with:

put cf code here, surround HTML outputs with cfoutput

end all files with:

That will eliminate ALL the extra white space that was not generated as you wanted it
to be, and it's backwards-compatible with version 4.01.

RE: fusebox style: too much disk access?

2000-10-20 Thread Warrick, Mark

Wouldn't that be the same concept as 1,000,000 people hitting Yahoo's homepage and
search script every day?

I think what it comes down to is that a properly built application on a server capable
of handling those kind of requests is not going to have any problems with the Fusebox
methodology of coding.

RE: CFPOP

2000-10-19 Thread Warrick, Mark

After reading through the CFPOP documentation, it doesn't appear that you can control
the sort order. I believe you can use ParseDateTime to convert the date-time value to
something that DateFormat can work with.

IE: DateFormat(ParseDateTime(popdate), "dd/mm/")

Hope this helps.

RE: cfhttp problems/getting system information from users i.e. cpu speed/ram

2000-10-19 Thread Warrick, Mark

CFHTTP is usually used for fetching files (URLs).

RE: fusebox style: too much disk access?

2000-10-19 Thread Warrick, Mark

The performance hit is nearly undetectable. Don't worry about it.
