If you can find the trainer on adobe.com, they're an authorized training center. I'm an instructor who teaches that course. My own observation about the course is that it's hard to define "advanced". For some people, the content of the course is overwhelmingly difficult. For others, it's quite easy. People have different ideas about what's advanced and what isn't. So, you should definitely look at the course outline to see if it covers what you need to know. http://training.figleaf.com/Courses/Advanced_ColdFusion_Training.cfm I would like to note that the Advanced CFMX 8 course was developed for Adobe by Fig Leaf Software. In need of CF training, your opinions
Hi Mark My team has never had any formal CF training, and there are a lot of things we are being asked to do now that we just kind of have to figure out on our own. Everybody on my team learned CF on the fly at some point a long time ago, and we grow and learn new things occasionally, but I think we're way behind the curve there. No time just to play around, we just learn as we're forced to do it .. like webservices and component objects for example. If you look here: https://www.roundpeg.com/home.cfm?main=training&Action=classinfo&classid=209 It's a 3-day "advanced" CF course. I think my guys could benefit from a lot of these things. We already know something about a lot of these, but its all trial and error. Some formal instruction would be good to improve our applications and really understand how to use more advanced features available in CF 7/8. Yes, I'd like to get them to frameworks also, particularly fusebox 5.5, but that never seems to be included together with such things as cfcomponent objects, webservices, flex, flash forms etc. From: Mark Mandel Date: Thu, 3 Apr 2008 09:12:23 +1100 Alan, When you say 'advanced', what do you mean? Re: In need of CF training, your opinions
Alan, When you say 'advanced', what do you mean? Do you mean just advanced features? (not even sure what that means), or do you mean things like Framework training? If it's the latter there are several groups out there that do that sort of thing, I believe FireMoss and Alagad do MG training, I can't remember if anyone does ColdSpring training, and I'm not sure if Luis does ColdBox training, but it would be worth pinging him. I'm pretty sure that GretaBizTools provides MachII training. I'll be starting to write up the Transfer curriculum after cf.Objective(), so that will hopefully soon be available as well. Hi All, Just a shot in the dark here but I'd like to take an advanced CF Training in the Toronto area but thery need at least 3 persons to give the class and we are only 2 registered right now.. and we were 2 in montreal but they need 5 to give the class in montreal so we accepted to go to toronto... So I'm trying the list to see if there is no one willing to take that course so it will happen... The course is with Northern Objects (http://www.northernobjects.com/assets/Files/adcf.txt) and is on the 28th of june in Toronto for 3 days (it was on the 21st of june in montreal) Thanks and sorry for the off topic Pat [EMAIL PROTECTED] [Todays Threads] [This Message] [Subscription] [Fast Unsubscribe] [User Settings]

Re: CF Training?
Hi all! I really appreciate all the info from those who responded to my original post. I have decided to take the Advanced CF course this summer in Seattle (my husband and I live north of Seattle). It will be well worth the investment and also nice to have certified professionals to answer questions pertaining to the advanced material. I am looking forward to an exciting career in CF. Please feel free to lend any further advice to my email address. Re: CF Training?
I love this thread. And I appreciate the advice and encouragement from the ones of you farther down the road. Could someone comment on how to interpret the jobs listings we find online? I personally am ready to find a great company to work for, but the listings I find tend to put up some awfully steep requirements, including all sorts of other experience besides CF. Like many, I've dabbled with Perl, CGI, ASP and half a dozen authoring programs. But it's intimidating to think a company is wanting strong skills in all of these. More comments, please! CF Training?
Hi all, In the interest of full disclosure, I'll state up front that I'm an Allaire Certified Instructor, and am V.P. of Technical Services for DevTech, an Allaire Authorized Training Center and Allaire Premier Partner with offices in Portland and Seattle. This means I know a lot about the classes, and have a financial interest in promoting them. And, I believe I have a relevant perspective to share here. Ben Forta's books are a great way to learn *IF* you have the time and discipline to work through them, cover to cover. The Allaire courses (the "basic" Fast Track to ColdFusion, and Advanced ColdFusion Development) cover much, though not all, of what these books have to offer, in 3 days each. To me, the "how should I go about learning ColdFusion" question has two main angles: Learning Style - are you disciplined enough to hit the books and work them hard, evenings and weekends, by yourself while holding down another job? Many people learn better in a classroom environment, where topics can be presented and absorbed in a logical flow of bite- size chunks, during a three day period set aside to focus on taking in new information. Cost - for you, is it less expensive to buy a book, and then devote a few months of evening and weekend work to get up to speed, or is it a more cost-effective use of your time to attend an intense classroom experience and get the core skills under your belt in about a week? The Allaire courses are "intense" according to virtually all student feedback I've ever received (I've taught close to 200 students, with another round beginning tomorrow morning), which is why my company has a second-round "re-audit" policy. Sometimes once is not enough, as there's a LOT in these classes. But, my students leave with a solid toolbelt of useful ColdFusion techniques strapped around their waist. The folks at Allaire put together a very solid curriculum. Your mileage, of course, may vary ... and I regularly plug Forta's books in my classes (one o' these days I'm gonna ask him for a kickback! ). It all comes down to how *you* learn best.
Re: CF Training?
My recommendation to anyone wanting to get more into CF is to find a company that specializes in it. It's the only way you'll get to see what CF is really capable of. Most corporations don't use 1/10th of the CF power available to them. I believe that in order to get really good with the software, you'll need to be challenged by people wanting more than you can deliver, and surrounded by people who can show you how it's done. I won't say that you can't get good learning by yourself, but it takes a lot more effort on your part. Check out the Allaire Partners on the allaire website. I'm sure there is one near you. When you interview, tell them exactly what you're looking for: an opportunity to become a CF guru. Most of them will be thrilled to talk to you. And these days, having URLs means a lot more than a degree. If actually changing jobs isn't an option now, then join your nearest CFUG. Network your hiney off and find a couple of "coding partners" who would be willing to share ideas, code, and provide a CF sounding board. Join a startup or any firm that will take you as a web developer (HTML, CFML, SQL, VB, etc). Ideally they will already have a senior CF developer that you can pick up a few things from. You'll want to get at least 12-18 months under your belt after which you can pick which company you want to join. In my case I came from an econ background, took 8 months of classes in C/C++ at GWU, and was asked up by a startup web firm/friends to do HTML, ASP and CF.. so basically self taught as are a lot of people here. Just remember not to shy away from the challenging stuff, or stuff you haven't done. RE: CF Training?
You've already got a great set of technologies under your belt. That's a good start. I've taken the FT course already, and I strongly advise taking it if you're serious about ColdFusion as a career. A fair amount of what the course covers is stuff that you've already done throughout the book (I went the same route that you did...doing Forta's book first, then FT. What I found about the class is that it cemented my CF knowledge...kind of filled in the holes. I'm now working as a CF developer for an internet startup, and loving every minute of it. I'll be taking the Adv. CF class in the next couple of months (this month, if I can manage it). Fact is, training is always a good thing, and if you're just starting out, being able to show that you're a self-starter by explaining what you're teaching yourself, as well as showing that you're investing in your own skills by paying for the courses, and that you've been trained by authorized trainers, a lot of employers will give your resume a second look in a pile of people with the same or more experience. I'd also suggest trying to go to the Allaire CF Developer's Conference later this year. It's a GREAT place to rub elbows with potential employers, as well as learn a LOT of things you won't find in books. Check out the Allaire website for more details. The other thing is to find the CFUG (ColdFusion Users Group) in your area. Another great place to find people who represent companies hiring CF developers. Some of these companies will hire with part of the offer being sending you for more CF training. Good luck... -Kev > -Original Message- > From: Christine Kelley [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, May 31, 2000 10:11 PM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: CF Training? > > > This is a multi-part message in MIME format. > > --=_NextPart_000_0009_01BFCB33.E53B42A0 > Content-Type: text/plain; > charset="iso-8859-1" > Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable > > Hi all! > I have read CFWACK4.0 cover to cover (along with doing all the = > exercises) and am starting on the Advanced book. Re: CF Training?
Christine Hmmm... I think that there is more than one "right way" to get your foot in the door. You seem to be self-motivated, or you wouldn't have gotten this far. You might consider this approach: 1) get access to a web site with CF & SQL (preferably SQL Server) and possibly ASP... this should cost $50/month or less 2) Your goal is to build a portfolio of real web applications to illustrate your skills 3) Pick 3 major applications you would like to implement, e.g: shopping cart community bulletin board personnel system forum accounting Content Syndication 4) Now, start small, expand on the apps in the CFWACK and evolve them into [more] complete applications that fit the app set you want in your portfolio... For example, you could build a personal picture album application that allows: upload and captioning of pictures; storing the pictures in files and the data in a database; retrieving and displaying these; maintaining the files. The techniques you develop will apply to most of the major apps (above). 5) Look around and see what others are doing and how they do it (good and bad)... this, and other HOF lists are a good source of URLS. This process will get you started and identify what you don't know that you need to learn. At some point, you'll have a little experience, some goals, some partial progress towards those goals, and lots of questions... lots of questions. So, now, is a good time to get the most out of the formal training courses... ...you'll have real questions about real problems that *you* have encountered. When you attend the class(es), you'll know exactly what you want to learn, and you'll make damn sure that you learn it. You'll be amazed... almost everything in the classes will address *your* specific questions/problems and you can use the techniques/examples in *your* applications. That's a start! CF Training in Columbus Ohio :: : ? : :: When?
I need to get back on board with this stuff. to many little things to build & am wasting way to much time in the books looking for answers. If the are any certified trainers in Columbus, please let me know. I need all the CF classes. if you would travel to train, send me some pricing please. The reseller here still has not been certified. If I was a real programmer I would try it myself. thanks -paul -- Archives: http://www.eGroups.com/list/cf-talk To Unsubscribe visit http://www.houseoffusion.com/index.cfm?sidebar=lists&body=lists/cf_talk or send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with 'unsubscribe' in the body.
