RE: VPS or Dedicated CF Hosts

I'm using AHP, too. Everything may not be instant and 24/7,
but you can't be the price for cutting-edge hardware and good
specs on the account at a price of $69.99 per month.

I even checked into hostmysite recently for a VPS with CF8,
but the least expensive was $120 per month and if you run over
the 400 GB per month transfer for a few consecutive months, they force you
to move to a dedicated server for at least $400 per month.

With AHP, I can get a second VPS with 250 GB of transfer for another
$70 per month and still on spend $20 month per month and hostmysite
and have 500 GB per month transfer.

Cost/Benefit...

Yes, their servers are all colocated at Internap which is the same facility
 that houses Adobe,
TimeWarner, and other large sites. Their generators can keep the servers up
 for at least 2
weeks before needing to be refueled. I'm surprised there's no information on

I just have had too many issues with my sites being down due to power outages
 in the past,
including a fairly long one in the time I was with Vivio (4+ hours on a
 business day). With a
previous host, the power company accidentally cut a power line near their
 location and my
sites were all down for several days until it got resolved. My parents live
 in an area that
never had a major power outage for 20+ years until a couple years ago when
 the entire area was
without power for more than a week. So even if a host has had a previous good
 record of
uptime, without generator backup it's basically just playing the lottery that
 such a disaster
does not happen and take everything down. I'm glad to know they are working
 on this, as I had
only minor nits otherwise with their service.

True dat. ;^) Also I won't personally host with a company that takes that
much control out of your hands. YOU should determine how any software will
affect your application and YOU should determine the best time to install
it.

A host should (I think) inform you of important updates and I would say it's
reasonable to require those certain rare patches that might affect their
network. But control should still be in your hands.

Also I just have to say that Linux/Unix isn't a panacea for this. Better in
some ways, no doubt, worse in others - in my experience the end result is a
wash. (I spent many years working with Enterprise Windows Systems and the
past several years working with Enterprise AIX systems.)

In my experience downtime is about equal with both... and those WTF
moments (or hours...) are universal. Although to be fair nearly every case
that comes to mind the root cause was human error and of those left over
pretty much all were vendor software issues.

In short if you want to run a fully stable OS keep all people away from it
and don't ever install anything. ;^)

Re: VPS or Dedicated CF Hosts

2007-11-21 Thread Jordan Michaels
Thanks for bringing this post to my attention.

With regards to generator backup, we do realize that this is one of the
chinks in our armor, and as you said, we are very much working toward
implementing a solution for this. Generators are amazingly expensive and
it will be difficult to implement, but we are working toward that. All
of our servers, switches, and routers are on a distributed UPS system,
which handles 99.9% of power problems that occur in our area, but even
so, getting a generator system online is our current priority in
improving our infrastructure.

Does AHP have a generator system in place? I could not find anything
about their infrastructure on their site.

Regarding out of date software, I'm happy to report that this is
something we've remedied. Any new VPS Account will now use CentOS 4
instead of CentOS 3 as it was previously. If you need something even
more modern then what's included with CentOS 4, we'll be happy to work
with you to get that installed. In some cases, we'll even perform the
upgrade for you for free when we set up your VPS Account. Just ask us
about it. We want you to succeed and if using bleeding edge software
will help you do that, we're all for it.

We continually strive to offer better services and improve our
infrastructure, so it pays to check back from time to time to see how
we've improved. ;)

I'm a 4 yr CrystalTech customer, but I've become disappointed with them over
the last year or so. I get some of the most entertaining responses from their
support. I'd rather just ask James, Jim, or some of the other bright folks on
the list, because I sure can't rely on CT.

I needed something more stable for some projects. The disruptor talked me into
hostmysite's VPS. I can honestly say these people have totally blown me away. I
had forgotten what it's like to have good support. If you have a problem,
shoot'em an email, and more than likely you'll get a quick response/solution.

I've even had some problems configuring software I installed on the VPS. HMS
Support logged in and made the changes for me. Completely above and beyond the
call of duty.
If I had emailed CT, I would've gotten, What is MySQL?

This is makin' me gag to type it, but thanks to dave for the VPS
recommendation.

Re: VPS or Dedicated CF Hosts

2007-11-19 Thread John Blayter
Here are some of the issues that I have had with AHP.

1. The base server that I was on crashed over the weekend and I think that our
total downtime was 20+ hours before we were successfully moved to another
server.

2. AHP does the windows updates every weekend so you can count on a random
restart on Saturday or Sunday. Most places do the Windows update once a month.

3. A few months ago a Windows Update caused our VPS to go up and down like a
yo-yo and it took a couple days before they could get it straightened out.

4. From what I can tell... its just one person @ AHP and thats it... Our
projects are starting to get to the size that I need a true hosting company
with technical staff on location 24x7.

5. They are in a good data center but I have had a couple of times where for
some reason my request would die somewhere in their network before it got to my
VPS. I ended up having to email the trace rt to the data center to have them
fix it.

HTH,

John

I am looking for a good VPS or Dedicated CF host. My budget is about
$200 a month max. I have been having some serious issues with AHP
hosting and I need to switch while I still can.

CrystalTech.com has some amazing dedicated server packages for half that.
Lots of free (and quality) software and extras.

I've been using a dedicated server from them (an older, $89/month server)
for several years and have nothing but good things to say about them.

Not for nothing (and I'm a very happy CT customer) but you won't get good
service from CT on questions dealing with (most) software. They don't want
to support it. ;^)

They will (for a HUGE fee) but that fee represents their unwillingness to
get into your specific configuration. If you consider them only network and
hardware (plug and chug) support you'll have a much better experience.

Nearly every complaint I've seen about CT deals with support for non-system
software (CF, IIS, Apache, etc). Again, they will do that, but they just
don't want to and their prices and attitudes reflect that. To be fair they
don't actually advertise this as a feature of their service.

Of course I've had my box, with no fundamental configuration changes, for
over three years. I may be in a nicely isolated rut. ;^)

service from CT on questions dealing with (most) software. They don't
 want
 to support it. ;^)

You're exactly right. Just like when my CF mappings magically
disappeared multiple times after I created them. I emailed support and
they replied, the cleaners must've deleted them I'm like, O k!

The Cleaners? Was this before or after you requested assistance?

In my experience they run NOTHING on my server. (I wouldn't actually want
them to help with most application problems since they know less than I do
and are more likely to screw it up than help.)

They don't even install system updates - the only exception that I can
remember was the system patch to prevent Code Red since it had a broader
network impact. When they did they sent emails before and after.

Other than that (when an unpatched machine can compromise the network)
you're totally on your own (in my experience).

VPS or Dedicated CF Hosts

2007-11-18 Thread John Blayter
I am looking for a good VPS or Dedicated CF host. My budget is about $200 a
month max. I have been having some serious issues with AHP hosting and I need
to switch while I still can.

Thanks for the recommendations!

You can save a lot of that $200 with Viviotech for a VPS. You can get
a decent dedicated server from them for around that price.

CrystalTech.com has some amazing dedicated server packages for half that.
Lots of free (and quality) software and extras.

I've been using a dedicated server from them (an older, $89/month server)
for several years and have nothing but good things to say about them.

Re: VPS or Dedicated CF Hosts

2007-11-18 Thread Dave l
Do you have your own cfm license? That will play some part in the decision.

I have had 3 vps server and they were ok, certainly better than shared but just
recently moved to a big dedicated box and there is just no comparison IMO.

But then again I got a pretty good setup and its more that 3x what you want to
pay monthly but it's definitely worth it. (hms)

I see Jim has recommended a ct, personally I think they are a bunch of idiots
over there. A friend of mine has a ded box there and it's a nightmare. As a
quick example, he had me write him some cf code and he put it on there but
couldnt get it to run because he put it outside the webroot and didnt know how
to make virtual mapping. He called ct tech support and they said they could do
it and charged him $175 to do it but then called back and said they would need
to re-install cfm to get it right and they would charge his cc $460 more to do
that. I told him to call HMS and tell them what the deal is and ask if they
would help him and of course they did and 3 minutes later he was good to go
even though he wasnt a hms clients.

Anyways, I would say it's just like a shared server.. you get what you pay for.

You can get the bigger cfm vps at hms for around $189.
maybe Wilber will pitch in as he just switched from ct to one of those at hms.
