Re: Date Ranges: Drop Down Menus vs Calendar Based
I get what you're saying about the interactivity between the calendar and the textboxes/or drop downs being auto-filled based on the user selection. I've already validated the "To" date with the drop downs to prevent the second date being earlier than the first (I'm not trying to avoid validation, just trying to avoid re-writing it through-out the app). If the Calendar is in place with the textboxes/dropdown being auto-filled, there would still be more clicks needed to get to the final result (in some instances) using the calendar, and that to me makes less sense to re-write only to add something less useful. (my opinion obviously). Start Date to End Date: using a drop down for each "Month/Day/Year" to "Month/Day/Year" (with validation and CFC's to re-populate the Day based on Number of days in the month) seems more functional than using a visual calendar where the user has to click back in time to Jan, then click forward in time month after month to pre-populate drop downs or textboxes. Doesn't it make more sense to just select the month/day/year to month/day/year and hit go rather than popping up a calendar to navigate through the whole year? Seems counter-intuitive to me. Maybe this is a another endless argument solely based on individual user preference. ~| Order the Adobe Coldfusion Anthology now! http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-Coldfusion-Anthology/dp/1430272155/?tag=houseoffusion Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:355458 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/unsubscribe.cfm
Re: Date Ranges: Drop Down Menus vs Calendar Based
Following up on my own e-mail . . . . if you really don't want to have people type in dates, you could implement a calendar date picker with drop-downs. When a user clicks on a date, you can then populate the dropdowns with the date they chose. No matter which route you choose, you'll want to do some validation (making sure they didn't choose a "to" date that is earlier than the "from" date, etc.). How about using a calendar date picker along with text boxes the users can type into? I think that's how sites like Travelocity do it, and it gives users who don't want to click from month to month the option of typing it in. You'll still have to validate, of course, but that's not too difficult. Date Ranges: Drop Down Menus vs Calendar Based
I've been writing an application in CF that imports cost data from Analytics, AdWords, BING, and other APIs that generate reports based on selected date ranges and filtered campaigns. After looking into multiple types of jQuery based calendar selectors used in setting the date ranges, I decided to go with drop down menus with my own Ajax/CFC driven version instead. Now the question has come back to me about adding the Calendar selection instead because I've been told it's more "user friendly". When I first started writing it, I implemented the calendar selection and found many issues that didn't work as well as I would like. I also looked into how Google Analytics uses the date range options with their calendar selection to see how they did it. There are several things that I don't like about these and ultimately chose to not use this type of method. For example, if you're selecting four or more months or a full year, it's faster to type in the date range than to select from the provided visual calendar (clicking back to Jan, selecting the 1st, then clicking forward to Dec etc). However, typing in the date range manually can lead to user error and results in a need for more validation, which is something I'd rather avoid. With a custom created set of drop down menus it's faster than both hand typing it and clicking through multiple months to get the right date range, not to mention less space used in the interface. Not sure what you're looking for Steve ... just the syntax for adding your 'dayview' value to the URL string? Also, as a side note, you can get rid of most of those # signs ... The following will add your computed date to the URL string in a 'safe' format, passing it as a variable called 'date': http://esuevents.admin.esu.edu/wv3/wv3_servlet/urd/run/wv_main.Start&date=#urlEncodedFormat(dayview)#">#ThisDay# #ThisDay# ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;207172674;29440083;f Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/message.cfm/messageid:321704 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/cf-talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4

I use the commercial version of that calendar and wrote a custom tag to work with it and the framework we use at work. It is pretty simple to write a tag for a wrapper around their calendar. CF calendar code driven by JavaScript
Hi all, Boy, there are tons of calendars out on the web, javascript calendars, coldfusion calendars, etc. What I'm looking for specifically, I haven't found yet, so I thought I'd see if any of you have one or have seen it. I'm looking for coldfusion calendar code that is driven by javascript. Meaning that when the page load, coldfusion generates the current month on the screen (or the month for whatever date you specify), but the links to change the month and year are all javascript driven and the page does not RELOAD. Ultimately, I need to fix it so I can select one or more days in the calendar, but I can add that functionality myself easily enouhg. It's the calendar generation code that utilizes javascript to control the month and year that I'm really looking for. TIA! Re: OT: Publishing for google calendar
Had a quick look at your component and it looks tres handy indeed - will have a proper look if I go with any google calendar stuff. I decided to not be lazy and just write a simple custom tag - all I need is a calendar style view of date indexable data; no maintainence of entries, not very hard at all and can't believe I was thinking of added that unwanted complexity into a beautifully coded app :p Dominic -- Blog it up: http://fusion.dominicwatson.co.uk ~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;160198600;22374440;w Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/message.cfm/messageid:300040 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4

Other way around ;) What I had in mind was a site that published various calendar feeds to an iCal format that were picked up by a google calendar account. The calendars could then be embedded in the site using google calendar's iframe embedding tool thing to make bugger all work for me! RE: designing db tables for calendar events
For what it's worth, the MS SQL Server model for scheduled tasks is well documented in the SQL DMO help. Do a search for "SQLDMOFreq_Daily" and you'll be smack in the middle of the data model they use. Their model has no problem with "first Tuesday of each month", etc, and it may give you ideas. It helps to have access to a SQL Server to play with to really understand how their model really works; I used the docs and some hacking around to develop code to dump a scheduled task's run schedule. You might find this link helpful: http://www.bennadel.com/blog/877-ColdFusion-Calendar-Event-Scripting-Inspire d-By-Peter-Bell-.htm It discusses the "How-to" of recurring events. What a group! You guys sound like you are terrified of helping a newbie, yet you pass code back and forth between each other without inhibition. I suppose you were all born knowing CF and SQL so you never needed help from anyone to understand the principles involved. Ravi, don't forget to try Google for answers, too. RE: Accessing other peoples Exchange calendar with CF8
The following process will let you access individual mailboxes rather than every mailbox (explained briefly at the bottom). In Active Directory Users and Computers, turn on the Advanced Features view menu option. Open an account. Select the Exchange Advanced tab. Click "Mailbox Rights..." Add a user account and allow "Full mailbox access". Now, sit back and wait a few minutes. Then, open up OWA, in IE, and enter the following URL. http://email.yourdomain.com/exchange/[username] (where [username] is the mailbox you want to view.) Login with the credentials of the account you just added to that mailbox. OWA should open and show you the mailbox. If you can get it to work in OWA, you should be all set for CF use. Since we have several thousand mailboxes, we chose to delegate global Exchange administrator permissions to a generic account that is used by CF. This step was performed in the Exchange System Manager application. Basically, our generic account will have access to all current mailboxes as well as any future mailboxes, without having to set each one, manually. Re: Calendar with Recurring Events
Jake, I built one - it took me ages because i kept changing my mind about how to handle recurring events. I've built it about a dozen times now. Here's what I settled on (it has advantages and disadvantages - there was no clear winner in the contest to find the best way to do it, which is why it took so long to do) I have a event table, which contains all the details of the event itself - event name, venue, image name, ticket price, link to 'more info' web site, etc etc. And a eventDate table, which has the date(s) this event will occur on. This table links to the event table with a foreign key to the event table. In the input side, the user first completes the event details, then is passed to a dates page and can enter the dates for the appearance as far forward as they want. The recurring options included are : Daily for X days Weekly for x weeks fortnightly for x fortnights Monthly for x months Bi-monthly for x occurrances quarterly 6 monthly annually on the (first, second, third, forth, fifth) (dayof week) of the month starting from (date) The tricky bit was the way to handle the recurring aspects. And i finally settled on creating a single event in the events table, and multiple dates in the eventDates table The action page inserts date records in the eventDates table the appropriate number of times based on what is selected on the dates options page. The calculation of the dates forward is handled by a EventDatesGatesDAO.cfc which has methods that can figure out the dates on each interval .. i.e. give getdateWeekly() a date and it'll return a date object with the date a week hence. Give getdateFortnightly() a date and it will return a date object of two week's hence. Give getYearForward() a date and you'll get back the same day a year hence. GIve getnextnthofmonth() a date, the nth, and a day, and it'll return the date of the nth day (e.g. 3rd monday) in the next month after the date given. It's not perfect, but it is a series of compromises for me. The drawback with this approach is that if the user changes the text of the event, it's changed for all occurrances. For example, if they change the details of the listing to show 'Special Christmas meeting", then the listing in the March calendar will also show "Special Christmas meeting" But i decided that was a lesser evil than creating a whole event record for each date, and then if for example the venue changed (which happens often in this organisation), the user would have to go through and edit every occurrance of that event in the future. Once you have the database containing the events records and the dates/times they're to appear on, the display side of it is fairly straightforward. Hope this helps. RE: Calendar with Recurring Events
Hi Jake- A couple years back, I was involved with a project where had to do this exact thing for a client. Here's a few things that might help get you started. The calendar allowed for both recurring and concurring events, although I don't have the ability to do recurring events that span multiple days (yikes!). Here's the basic database structure I used. There's actually more, but I left only the parts that deal with recurrence: Events -- EventID (int) PK Name (varchar) StartDate (date) EndDate (date) Recurring (boolean) RecurringValue (int) RecurringInterval (varchar) RecurringEndDate (date) RecurringParentID (int) EventDays - EventDayID (int) EventID (int) FK DayInterval (int) Obviously, when the Recurring field is true, then we're dealing with a recurring event. RecurringValue and RecurringInterval work together, so let's say you have an event that recurs every 3 days, RecurringValue would be "3" and RecurringInterval would be "day" RecurringInterval can be day, week, month, or year. RecurringEndDate is the day when the recurring event ends, obviously. In my system this is optional, so a RecurringEndDate that is NULL never ends! RecurringParentID is used when there is a split, either if someone changes information about the recurring event mid stream (like "apply these changes to this and all future dates") or deletes a single occurrence, etc. That's really one of the biggest pains in the system is dealing with those. The EventDays table keeps track of things like lets say you want an event to take place every two weeks on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Then I would have three DayInterval entries for 2 (Mon), 4 (Wed), and 6 (Fri) in the database. It also keeps track of Monthly settings like "Every second Tuesday of the week." I hope this helps get you going in the right direction. I would love to share the code base with you, but don't think the client would appreciate that much, but please let me know if you have any more questions and I'll be happy to help! -- Ryan J. I can read the text (strings) just fine, but the dates are coming back as Gregorian Calendar java objects. How in the world do I get that back into a date CF can understand :) Thx! -james ~| Download the latest ColdFusion 8 utilities including Report Builder, plug-ins for Eclipse and Dreamweaver updates. http;//www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=labs%5adobecf8%5Fbeta Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/message.cfm/messageid:284660 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=89.70.4

So would now be a bad time to tell Dae that if he waits for CF8, he will get better performance and more convenience out of reading in his large text file? :) I agree it can be frustrating when people all tell you to upgrade and it is not an option. I also like to see the community get excited about new features. Re: Adding events to outlook calendar
If your client doesn't have Microsoft Exchange, I think it's basically impossible for CF on the server side talking to a client-side outlook. You can create a .ics or .vcs file for the user to download/open and thereby import the event into their outlook, but without exchange, that's all you can do. As an aside, I wrote a set of CF <-> MS Exchange tags a few years back which work in CF MX6/7 on windows (I dont think they'd work on linux). They are not elegant, and they require you to use the WEBDAV codes to accomplish what you want, but they work and in our test code there are a number of samples of WEBDAV commands. If you guys want, I can spend a few minutes cleaning them up and post them somewhere. I make no guarantees that they will do what you want, but if you'd like to look at them, I'm willing to do it (though it'll probably be a few days before I get to it). ~| Deploy Web Applications Quickly across the enterprise with ColdFusion MX7 & Flex 2 Free Trial http://www.adobe.com/products/coldfusion/flex2/?sdid=RVJU Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/message.cfm/messageid:284139 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Talk/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.4
