there actually was a proto type el camino in 65 that looked like this. The only picture I have ever saw was it towing a ski/drag boat.the article mentioned it was 396 powered. I wonder if this was the mysterious z16 el camino or convertible that has eluded everyone for years? who will ever know?

Take the AN size and Multiply by .0625

Example:

8AN x .0625 = 1/2"
20AN x .0625 = 1-1/4"

As far as actual AN hose OD/ID, you should check with each
specific manufacturer like Aeroquip, Earls, Russel, etc...

[Chevelle-List] EFI and Side Pipes

2002-03-05 Thread Lojac

I am toying with the thought of
putting side pipes on my 69 Chevelle.  Anyone seen this before or had any
experience with them?  Are they terribly loud?  I am also planning on
putting a Air Ride kit on the car.  Will the side pipes get in the way of
me slamming the car to the weeds?  What is the diameter of the pipes (the
entire unit?  I am talking about the ones made by DynoMax.  Who makes
the SuperRam EFI kit for the BBC?  Is this a straight forward install or is
it difficult?  I like the simplicity of the carb, but EFI does have some
benefits.  Let me hear some of your thoughts on this.

[Chevelle-List] help badly needed on a 10 bolt rear end

2002-03-05 Thread CST0215

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Hello,
I am having a terrible time installing posi in my 10 bolt rear. I purchased
a used posi unit to replace the open differential. Everything bolted in just
fine until time for the C-clips.

I got the c-clips in and they spin freely, but now the center pin does not
have enoug room to slide through, and there is no room to back out the axles
any farther. I used the stock axles which came with the open differential.
Does a Posi carrier take shorter axles?

Any advice would be truly appreciated, as my car is useless withour rear
tires!

Motion built the cars to customer orders but would suggest the parts that he

some used Hooker. Many got fiberglass hoods as well. Here is a picture of an

Re: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster - stainless ?

2002-03-05 Thread Galen and Melissa Love

My exhaust pipes are not from Flowmaster, but they
are aluminized.  Pretty much any muffler shop you go to will stock
aluminized exhaust tubing.  I just bought the mufflers (2.5") from
Flowmaster and had a local shop bend the pipe and do the
installation.  With that said, the aluminized pipes are in good shape,
no signs of rust, etc.  FYI, instead of carrying the exhaust tubing all the
way over the rear axle to the back of the car, I'm just using 45 degree turn
downs (angled slightly outward) just in front of the rear axle.  It's
definitely louder that way, and you have to deal with a little more interior
noise...  But for me, the sound is worth it.

  Galen,

Are the pipes staying free from rust as well? Or did you not buy the
pipes from them as well? I was wondering what “alumninized” steel pipes would look like after taking high
  heat and use.

  Sounds like you got
your money’s worth on the mufflers for sure after 6 years and still in good
shape. Seems to be a lot of happy
  customers.

  Dale makes a good
point. If they are of high enough quality to where they last a long time, I
guess you don’t need stainless unless you are doing mostly
  shows.

  Thanks to Larry for
his buddy’s expert opinion. Sounds logical, and you
know us guys like logic….except sometimes when buying things for our cars that
  we WANT ;)

  Well that about makes
my decision on exhaust system, except what to do with headers. I want some
kind of coating for the headers I need to buy for my 396.

As far as longevity is concerned,
I've had Flowmasters on my Chevelle for about 6 years now, and they aren't
showing any signs of rust.  I live in
  Kansas, so they
get exposed to rain, dirt, snow, and salt on a routine
  basis.

They're not
stainless at that price.  Sure they'd look better and last longer but
for the sound (my first set of Flowmasters), it's a pretty good deal to
me.  If you're building a car to show and not drive much, even
springing for an HPC/JetHot/etc coating wouldn't be out of line.  I'm
sure there's someone out there who makes stainless pipes or could make
them...just not my market right now.

  Dale,

The pipes aren’t stainless are they? Wouldn’t stainless last longer
  and look better?

  Do
any other companies make a stainless “kit”?  I like the kit concept.

  I'm quite
happy with the Flowmaster American Thunder kit I used in my 67 SS.  I
think they came with a 30 series muffler but it's different than the
standalone 30 series I believe.  Had to be for the difference in
price.  The kit was $290 w/mufflers (2.5") compared to the pipe kit
at $199...making the mufflers $100 for the pair.  Designed for header
equipped cars, they came complete with all pipes and hangars from the
headers back.  Not too loud on the highway and no "drone" at
  speed.  Part #17119.

Every new car came with a POP. It is intended to act like a "credit card"
device that is stamped when work is done...it identifies the car and the
owner. The neat thing is options are listed on the POP so it's almost as
good as finding the built sheet. I have an example of a 67 POP at
http://www.team67.com/information/index.htm, then click the
"Protect-O-Plate" link.

Anybody out have any ideas where I can find the rear cove panel (the part

work also. The one that's in the car was hit from the back and it would be
easier to replace it than straiten it? Any leads are appreciated !

I just finished the installation of the flowmaster system on my 68 Malibu
sunday, fit was great !!
I installed coated shortie headers (loads of ground clearance).

I haven't started the car yet but I bought it because you guys on the list
said it was a great system.

Btw, when I welded the tubes from the headers to the system I burned off
some the coating, what did you do about it, did you leave it the welds
uncoated or did you coat/paint it in any way ?

Welcome to new ones on the list

Kind Regards
André

[Chevelle-List] Hello

Hi folks!

I'm back on the list, after a year in San Francisco, Paris and Brussels and
then another year getting my new garage built here in Costa Mesa, CA. The
garage should be done in a month, and then I start rebuilding my 66 El
Camino, which is a painted shell in storage right now.

I owe some people some parts, but lost all records when my PC got stolen in
September. Was it Darrel that sent me the control arms? I have the
replacements to send back.

I would remove the current MC. Make sure to bench bleed the NEW MC. Install
new MC. Bleed brakes.
Every year or two I replace the brake fluid in my 70. If you are lucky your
car will gravity drain itself. I crack the bleeders loose and let the fluid
flow(keep and eye on the MC(don't let it run out of fluid).

Opening bleeder screws will empty the MC. But you will still have some
spillage.

You "MUST" bench bleed the new MC. There should be a kit and paperwork
on this with the new MC. Because chevelle MC mounts at an angle, you
cannot bleed all of the air out once its installed. If the new MC
doesn't have the kit, your parts store will. Cost me about $3.00 at
Pep Boys for the kit

I was just wondering how many El Camino owners there were on the list.
I know it says Chevelles, but some of us have an interest in both.
By the way, the Chevelle Magazine put out by Super Chevy is a great
magazine.
Pick it up... if you can find it...if you can't let me know I've seen
quite a few still on the shelves.

to put it on what is the best way to drain the fluid that was in the old one? bleed
the brakes?
and will the new one just bold on? Is this something I can do and be sure at 120 the
brakes will be there? :)

Re: [Chevelle-List] protect o plate

It was a metal plate, about credit card size. The dealer would stamp it
with buyer and vehicle info when you bought a new car. They would swipe
it when you came in for warrantee work. Save time I guess. Usually kept
in an envelope with the owners manual in the glove box.

Today they are an important source of data (if you have one) on how
your car was delivered from the factory. The vehicle info that the
dealer stamped in, included engine, tranny & other options.A P-O-P
is as valid as a build sheet to determine legitamacy of a car. Most/many
P-O-Ps were lost along the way.

The P-O-P is very valuable to the folks who are going for a factory
restoration. I'm not one of those folks. I know we do have a couple on
the list and they can give a better answer.

And 40 msgs is an average day. Weekends are slow and I've seen 80-100
in a day when there is a particularly hot topic being booted around.

"Super Clean" by Castrol. Good stuff. Biodegradable, cuts grease, not
too expensive and available at walmart or the parts store. Buy the
gallon container.
If you disconnect any of the wiring or vacumn hoses, label them.

Rick,
Somewhere in the early 80's is all I know. You would have to
research it. Ask a junk yard guy to look them up. You thinking about
one?

That hole where the tranny mounts and the front shaft cover/bearing
retainer(not sure of proper part name) goes in is what I think he was
referring to, yes. That's my impression. Could be wrong though, but
that's the only thing that makes sense to me.

2 questions - what year truck has this tranny.

Also - when you say "bearing pilot hole " do you mean the large hole at
the back of bellhousing where tranny mounts? thats what I was
measuring. As differentiated from pilot bearing.
rick

 <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:

Here's what I was told.

"New Process overdrive 4 speed with a Chevy bolt pattern. A 69
bellhousing would have to be slightly modified to fit it,
the bearing pilot hole would have to be made larger, but otherwise it
fits. It is stronger than a Muncie, but not much heavier. It lets you
run a 3.73, or 4.11 gear, and still cruise on the highway at 70mph in
comfort."

It is out of an early to mid 80's Chevy pick-em-up truck. I am going to
give it a try and if there's something I don't like about it, I'll yank
it and put in something else. For the price it's worth a try for what I
want. A lot of long distance traveling to car shows, no racing (although
I might put my foot into it once in a while.), and moderate big block
power (300-375 hp). I don't know much more about it than that.

I was told that the correct truck Bell Housing was a Hollander #771 and
a normal housing is #554. Still undecided on which one I want, but
starting to worry if what Rick said is true about not being able to open
it up more than 1/8 inch. Not sure how much clearance I need yet as I
haven't taken possession yet. If I can't go with the explosion proof
housing I will just go stock.

Thanks for the link Denny.

What transmission are you putting in? That would help us considerably.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Flowmaster - stainless ?

2002-03-05 Thread Cecil \"Steve\" Martin

Galen,

Are the pipes staying free from rust as well? Or did you not buy the
pipes from them as well? I was wondering what “alumninized”
steel pipes would look like after taking high heat and use.

Sounds like you got your money’s
worth on the mufflers for sure after 6 years and still in good shape. Seems to be a lot of happy customers.

Dale makes a good point. If they are of
high enough quality to where they last a long time, I guess you don’t
need stainless unless you are doing mostly shows.

Thanks to Larry for his buddy’s
expert opinion. Sounds logical, and you know us guys
like logic….except sometimes when buying things for our cars that we WANT
;)

Well that about makes my decision on
exhaust system, except what to do with headers. I want some kind of coating for
the headers I need to buy for my 396.

As far as longevity is concerned,
I've had Flowmasters on my Chevelle for about 6 years now, and they aren't
showing any signs of rust.  I live in Kansas, so they
get exposed to rain, dirt, snow, and salt on a routine basis.

They're not stainless at that price.  Sure they'd look better
and last longer but for the sound (my first set of Flowmasters), it's a pretty
good deal to me.  If you're building a car to show and not drive much,
even springing for an HPC/JetHot/etc coating wouldn't be out of line.  I'm
sure there's someone out there who makes stainless pipes or could make
them...just not my market right now.

Dale,

The pipes aren’t stainless are they? Wouldn’t stainless last
longer and look better?

Do any other companies
make a stainless “kit”?
I like the kit concept.

Steve

---

I'm quite happy with the Flowmaster American Thunder kit I used in
my 67 SS.  I think they came with a 30 series muffler but it's different
than the standalone 30 series I believe.  Had to be for the difference in
price.  The kit was $290 w/mufflers (2.5") compared to the pipe kit
at $199...making the mufflers $100 for the pair.  Designed for header
equipped cars, they came complete with all pipes and hangars from the headers
back.  Not too loud on the highway and no "drone" at
speed.  Part #17119.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Glasspacks

I'm quite happy with the Flowmaster American Thunder kit I used in
my 67 SS. I think they came with a 30 series muffler but it's different
than the standalone 30 series I believe. Had to be for the difference in
price. The kit was $290 w/mufflers (2.5") compared to the pipe kit at
$199...making the mufflers $100 for the pair. Designed for header equipped
cars, they came complete with all pipes and hangars from the headers back.
Not too loud on the highway and no "drone" at speed. Part #17119.

Jeff;

Could you verify that you are in fact running 30 series mufflers? Planning
on installing on my 71 this month, but was thinking 40 or even 50 series.

Thanks.. Denny

Hi all

I bought this 65 ss 3 mos ago and the guy said he used a green scratch pad
on one of the trim pieces around the vent window and scratched it up. I've
tried to polish it but it doesn't quite get back to the way the rest of the
trim is. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

What makes a car with protect o plate so special.
Sorry, thats more than one question.
I just got on the list yesterday...didn't know I'd get 40 emails the

Don't you just like to see a guy make out for a change.
Jason did you take your harness out of the shipping bag?
If not I would see if you could exchane it form your dealer for a gauge
harness , You'll have to eat the restockinf fee and shipping, But that might
be an option.
agin GL on you find.
