No 400 small blocks were put into any 68-72 Chevelles...there may have been a SB 400 in a 73-75, but I'm not sure of that either. I know the 454 was available til late 1974.

I have never seen a 400 small block in a Chevelle.
and I have never seen them listed in any of my

[Chevelle-List] Show and tell

2002-06-29 Thread Robert Belz

Hi All,
Well it was kind of a crappy week and I wasn't much in the mood for a car
show but a new dyno shop was having an open house, show and offering $15.00
chassis dyno pulls so I drug out the Chevelle, cleaned it up and headed out.
The show was mostly import cars but I found new respect for these things
when I saw a Celica Supra put down 670 H.P. to the ground (the thing looked
stock, very scary). There wasn't much competition in the domestic class so I
picked up first place, a nice trophy and $125.00 I wasn't expecting. Now
the good part. I made dyno two pulls, the first with full exhaust and made
311.7 H.P. and 371.9 Torque. Time allowed a second pull so I uncorked the
headers and pulled 321.3 H.P. and 384.1 torque. Not bad but I wonder where
that 435 H.P. and 530 torque went to that I got when I had the engine broke
in and dynoed before I installed it. Looks like accessories (water pump,
fan, power steering) , tranny (Turbo 400) and such sucked about 26% off the
motor. I didn't feel too bad about my numbers when I saw a gutted 72 drag
race only Chevelle w / a 468" BB make 420 H.P. and that was with a 100 H.P.
shot of N.O.S. Off the bottle he made about 340 H.P. to the ground. That
motor was so snotty it barely ran to get it on the rollers and then back to
their trailer. What I did learn is I can confirm in my case the open headers
worked better than the X-pipe and Flow Master mufflers with 2.5" exhaust.
Not much, but an improvement just the same. Now I have a base line to make
comparisons when I swap distributors, carbs and intake manifolds when I get
some spare time. If you get a chance to put your car on a chassis dyno
definately go for it. Anyway it was a good day with the Chevelle and my
wife had a blast driving it home with open headers (her dad used to race
super modified's and race cars are in her blood).
Have a good rest of the week end.

I'm not gonna bet the farm, and heavens knows at my age I can't be
sure about much of anything.  But it seems that over the years its been
discussed at Chevelle tech and  the consensus was that the 400 small block
never made it to a chevelle - at least thru  72.    I checked the
engine codes for 69-72  at the Index of Years at www.chevelles.com and couldn't find
anything for the 400.  Also Dan Carrs 68-72 Production poster does not
show a 400 except for the 70 Monte Carlo.

I agree with everything else you are saying.  Also in searching the
archive at TC I found that there was a 4 bbl 400 in the impala.  I posted a
question about this at Chevelle Tech, I can be convinced so we'll see.

the cowl induction work as a ram air or something, the engine will have a hole

Chad, you can buy a decent LS-6 for around $26-$32ksearch Chevelle
SS on collectorcartrader.com and see what you come up with. As far as
cloning goes, the motor is a very expensive part of the car. Getting a real
one in any shape could cost well over $10k by itself. LS-6/LS-7 crates
aren't available anymore as far as I know (if they were they'd be VERY
expensive).

Most people that have an LS-6 car never drive it on the street, it gets
trailered everywhere. If you're thinking about a daily driver, get the GM
454 crate motor (425 hp) and put it in whichever Chevelle you like best.
Then get the cowl induction hood with the flapper and a TH_400 tranny or an
M-22 four speed, toss in a striped paint job and some SS badges and you got
a great car. One thing though, don't ever misrepresent the car for what it's
notif you show it, say it's a cloneeveryone that has any sense about
SS Chevelles will know it anyway.Kelly & Jana Hanna www.hannawoodworks.com

Chad... I dunno if you have looked at parts and prices for BBC stuff
compared to SBC stuff. HUGE difference. Heck around here it is about a grand
for a rebuildable BBC with all the pulleys and brackets (which can cost a
fortune elsewhere). Also if you want torque a 400 or 406 motor easily can
  make 450 ft-lbs of torque. I also just made a 355 w. 11to1 compression that
makes an awsome torque cure. From 1500 to about 5500 you have anywhere from
  355 ft-lbs to 402 ft-lbs. This was a budget build and from 2500-5500 it is 390
to 400 ft-lbs. Now that is a fun motor for the street. Another consideration
is traction. Torque is a big PIA if you can't plant it. All it will do is end
up burning tires up and when you do get traction it tends to break un-beefed
  parts.

I would recomend a nice solid 355 or 400 motor with stock bottom end and
ARP stuff. Get a set of Vortecs heads and get them worked by a good hi-perf
place. If you need any other ideas either BBC or SBC give me  a

The malibu 400 was big block.   Check this page from http://links.chevelles.net/links

I have heard that ALL 400 s/b came from the factory with a 2 bbl carb.
They were torque motors for heavy vehicles.  And no chevelle got a s/b
400.

If you're doing a matching numbers all
original, etc build, I would recommend staying as stock as possible with the
exception of making it stronger, ie: ARP bolts, true roller timing chain, etc.
Roller rockers are not needed for the street but are good insurance as they're
better/stronger than stock & they are easily replaced with stock ones should
you choose.

Re: [Chevelle-List] LS - 6 or Clone?

2002-06-29 Thread Don

Chad,
Mikey gives some pretty good
advice.
396's came in 325, 350 & 375hp versions. You
can buy a small block 350 crate motor with 350 hp for about $4,000.  It is
relatively easy to get 300 to 350hp out of any good 327,350 or 400
smallblock.
BigBlock engines are definitely Cool & have
more torque but they are also heavier & more
expensive.
It really just depends on what you want, what
you're going to use the car for & How Much Cash You
Have.
Don

  Chad...

I think you should find a car that you like for the right price first of
all. Secondly look at the posts made to the originality question in the past
week. Also what are your plans for the car? Daily driver? Occasional cruiser?
Drag Strip Terror? An LS-6 would suck gas like a son of a gun and depending on
what has been done to the heads may need a higher octane gas then avalable

350,383, and 400/406's all can make killer street engines. It would be much
cheaper then a BBC and would save you work beefing up the rear end and would
allow for much better traction with street tires and near stock rear
suspension. The extra cash could be used for aftermarket cylinder heads w/ a
port job, beefed up bottom end or at least ARP throughout the lower end and
head studs. Heck maybe even go for a sweet FI setup. If you wanted to add some
extra punch for occasional trips to the track or whatever you could add a
small nitrous sytem for not much money and still be just as reliable, just
make sure you do your homework. I'd also step down from 4.10's unless you plan

Ok, is an alum radiator really more efficient than the regular rad?
Aren't they brass?

Anyway, I'm trying to find a radiator for my 69. The alum ones I've
tried are either too short or too tall. And I don't want to spend the
$500+ on the Be-Cool units that are supposed to be stock replacement
radiators.

Right now I have the Howe 31x19 for $199.00. Great price, nice
radiator, too tall. I'd rather not cut my radiator support to fit this
in.
A modine stock replacement rad is $266.00!!

Any suggestions out there? Is the Alum actually a cooler running
radiator over the brass?
Thanks,
Mike "about to boilover" P.

a  little realistic here.  Cloning an LS6 is not that easy.  My
70 is an LS6 clone and I have well over $27,000 invested in it and it is still

i would want to make it a daily driver, that is very
powerful, that can still make around 12 mpg.  maybe like a 454
crate?  but i would rather have a Big Block...not a built small
block.  and plus, a 400 doesnt sound right in a chevelle, cause they were
always built with 396's, 402's, and 454's.  also, do you know how much a BB
454 goes for (the crate motor)?

Chad, you can buy a decent LS-6 for around $26-$32ksearch Chevelle SS
on collectorcartrader.com and see what you come up with. As far as
cloning goes, the motor is a very expensive part of the car. Getting a real
one in any shape could cost well over $10k by itself. LS-6/LS-7 crates aren't
available anymore as far as I know (if they were they'd be VERY expensive).

Most people that have an LS-6 car never drive it on the street, it gets
trailered everywhere. If you're thinking about a daily driver, get the GM 454
crate motor (425 hp) and put it in whichever Chevelle you like best. Then get
the cowl induction hood with the flapper and a TH_400 tranny or an M-22 four
speed, toss in a striped paint job and some SS badges and you got a great car.
One thing though, don't ever misrepresent the car for what it's notif you
show it, say it's a cloneeveryone that has any sense about SS Chevelles
  will know it anyway.Kelly

Chad,
Another thing to consider is getting a car that you won't kill yourself in.
My first car was a '71 Chevelle SS454 clone. If it weren't for the fact that
I spent more time under it than in it, I would have been a statistic. Big
block cars, posis and wet streets will at the least cause you to bite a hole
in your seat, and worse kill you and maybe someone else. I guess the point
is work your way up from a mild small block and if at all possible get
enrolled in a performance driving school so you know how to handle a vehicle
that's out of control. I personally can't believe that my Dad would give me
a car like that, but now I know where I get my lack of sense.

Also what are your plans for the car? Daily driver? Occasional cruiser? Drag Strip Terror? An LS-6 would suck gas like a son of a gun and depending on what has been done to the heads may need a higher octane gas then avalable and/or a lead additive. I ran a BBC car as a daily driver for a while and it got old quick, especially the gas expense.   If you want to drive it everyday w/ a 4speed... I'd go for a built sbc. 350,383, and 400/406's all can make killer street engines. It would be much cheaper then a BBC and would save you work beefing up the rear end and would allow for much better traction with street tires and near stock rear suspension. The extra cash could be used for aftermarket cylinder heads w/ a port job, beefed up bottom end or at least ARP throughout the lower end and head studs. Heck maybe even go for a sweet FI setup. If you wanted to add some extra punch for occasional trips to the track or whatever you could add a small nitrous sytem for not much money and still be just as reliable, just make sure you do your homework. I always feel more comfortable with forged pistons. I'd stick with the
factory crank and rods. You could put a little more cam in if you want a
little choppy idle. As far as roller rockers I feel that the advantage is
that they are more consistant(1.7ratio) than the stamped rocker arms. The
tolerances are much closer.

Chad, you can buy a decent LS-6 for around $26-$32ksearch Chevelle SS on collectorcartrader.com and see what you come up with. As far as cloning goes, the motor is a very expensive part of the car. Getting a real one in any shape could cost well over $10k by itself. LS-6/LS-7 crates aren't available anymore as far as I know (if they were they'd be VERY expensive).

Most people that have an LS-6 car never drive it on the street, it gets trailered everywhere. If you're thinking about a daily driver, get the GM 454 crate motor (425 hp) and put it in whichever Chevelle you like best. Then get the cowl induction hood with the flapper and a TH_400 tranny or an M-22 four speed, toss in a striped paint job and some SS badges and you got a great car. One thing though, don't ever misrepresent the car for what it's notif you show it, say it's a cloneeveryone that has any sense about SS Chevelles will know it anyway.

[Chevelle-List] Test?

2002-06-29 Thread Chevelle 69

U since school is out for the summer and all these "yung-uns"
have acknowledged their above average maturity and wisdom to like
Chevelles Maybe we should have a test for them?

Maybe we should take this one step further and have them do research on
the Internet and tell us WHY Grease prevents wear and what types of
grease are best for what applications?

Maybe a competition to see who can find the best web page that shows
about lubrications or front end rebuilding?

I never learned so much as when I had to teach others ;)

The balljoints, tie rod ends and control arms swivel. To limit wear
they need to be greased. If you crawl under the car, you will see
small fittings on these parts. "Greasing the suspension" or "lube job"
or "grease job" are the terms used for this.

also, why would you grease the suspension and so on?

aww where we could go with this one :-)
Lube job refers to changing the oil and/or greasing the suspension,
u-joints, etc.
Trap Speed is the speed how fast ya are going in the 1/4 mile, the
finish line in the 1/4 mile is referred to as the traps.

[Chevelle-List] LS - 6 or Clone?

2002-06-29 Thread Chad Playso

I understand that LS - 6's are around $40,000, and
i was wondering, what if i dont have that much money, could i just go out and
buy a perfectly restored malibu - maybe around $8,500?, and then clone that to a
LS - 6?  with a LS-6 crate motor, and 4.10 gears w/ 4 speed?  how much
money would i have to put into it, to make it exactly like what a LS-6
was?  i figure, you pretty much have to replace EVERYTHING, right?  i
dont know how you guys take it with a perfectly all original car, cause if i had
one, i would be scared to drive it out there.  i would rather have one for
"play"; clone it, so its not SO valuble.  whatcha think?

RE: [Chevelle-List] Diff cover bolt installation

2002-06-29 Thread Wayne

Brad

I wouldn't use the locktite. To seal threads I would anaerobic sealer, stays
soft if you can't find that then a light coat of Teflon thread sealer would
work well too. The Teflon is readily available at your local parts house.
Good Luck
