[Chevelle-List] More nonsense for the 'Chevelle list'

2002-07-18 Thread Bill Bruyn

I like soda.

My socks are a little loose.

Woo hoo! I cut my grass today.

I think human feces smells bad.

Seriously. Of the 115 messages I got from this list today, I count 26 that
might be in scope. 23%. :o[

A suggestion: Maybe we should create a seperate list for chit-chat. Who
administers this thing?

Don't know for sure. Del used to hang out here but haven't seen him

They look like the old style Ansen Sprint slotted mags to me, but
polished.
I don't think Ansen is in business anymore but it was a popular style.
Fenton was another company that made wheels in the 60's and 70's. Best
bet
would be to check local "shopper" type car papers or even eBay.

Being a cop today is a tough job. Unfortunetly I think besides getting a bad rep from the 3% who break the rules, that also the increased need for them has led to many of the wrong types of people/personalities to get in to the field. It seems alot of officer these days want to make arrests and TELL people how to live and do things, rather then ENFORCE the rules and remember they are not some high almight being. That's just my $.02 worth on the situation, but no matter what type of officer... I'm glad they do their job because I don't think I could do it.   Mikey         >Having been a cop for 20 years now, I remember those "good ol days".  =S>ome were better, some worse.. than today.  Different world now.>Don  MMM the good old days when cops were allowed to be cops.  I bet nobody =taped the arrest either did they.  That ought to start something!  Lance  UT-OHHH DUCK FOR COVER!!

Larry,
Point taken. I was just saying that this particular car is a mess. It would be VERY difficult ( expensive ) to restore to a worthy condition. The frame has been changed numerous times. As I said before, The VIN is about the only original parts left. Where would you even find the parts to return it to it's former glory??? Take it easy.

I could show you several z16s that were in worst shape than that one that are back on the road or are being restored right now. The correct VIN with a title (only if the body/frame are there) you can completely restore one. since we are talking less then 70 cars known to exist at this time it would be well worth it if it had right VIN.

  I
know this. This is why I never hang out with him. He drives crazy as crap.
Only going 100MPH on the freeway, not that it matters, and we were just in the
neighborhood, not that it mattered. Now you guys know why I always take my own
car or truck when going to his house. Craig, it wasnt that fun, as it would of
been me at the drag strip drag racing. He was totally pumped up, thought it
was cool, when I know his day will come, because that Taurus isnt made to be
driven like that. Im not going to say I know the limits of my Chevelle, But I
know it well enough to know those four wheel non-power discs brakes cant ever
stop me fast enough. Again, there is the reason I drive 60-65 on the freeway,
and always go the speed limit on the streets. I never drive crazy like he
does. I have paitence driving. Hes also one of those people thats always 5
minutes late. Im! always 5 or 10 minutes early. In a

For the same reason people sell SS jacks, SS radios, SS
fenders etc I suppose.  "The guy I bought it from told me it was" or "my
buddy says it is" is always a good copout.  I liked the guy selling NOS
inner fender wells for a 70 LS6.  Never mind the fact they'd been on the
car since new, had low mileage, and the car was rearended.  HmmmNOS
huh?  Were LS6 inner fender wells special I wonder?

Dale

  Howdy,
It seems kinda funny to me, that if it
isn't a real Z-16, that he would claim it to be. Anyone who would even know
what a Z-16 is, would not want that one even if it
were the real deal, and anyone who doesn't know what a Z-16 is,
wouldn't care if it is or not. So why bother??? Take it easy... Dan

But, there are ~correct~ GM marked belts and hoses. Even though Gates
probably made the original ones under contract to GM, many purists won't
accept them as genuine but they'll accept any aftermarket ones with correct
markings. Go figure...

2002-07-18 Thread 396guy

Many shows I've been to draw the line at 30%-35% restoration effort. Items
such as new paint, new interior panels, detailed under the hood, etc. Most
will accept normal maintenance items such as belts, hoses, clamps, tires,
etc BUT will award more points (in Original class) for GM marked hose and
tower style clamps than one with hoses/belts marked Gates or Dayco and
modern worm-gear clamps. It would depend on the show's host.

I know this. This is why I never hang out with him. He drives crazy as crap. Only going 100MPH on the freeway, not that it matters, and we were just in the neighborhood, not that it mattered. Now you guys know why I always take my own car or truck when going to his house. Craig, it wasnt that fun, as it would of been me at the drag strip drag racing. He was totally pumped up, thought it was cool, when I know his day will come, because that Taurus isnt made to be driven like that. Im not going to say I know the limits of my Chevelle, But I know it well enough to know those four wheel non-power discs brakes cant ever stop me fast enough. Again, there is the reason I drive 60-65 on the freeway, and always go the speed limit on the streets. I never drive crazy like he does. I have paitence driving. Hes also one of those people thats always 5 minutes late. Im!
always 5 or 10 minutes early.

Funny how that works... I was a pretty good driver except for my street
racing at a local underground spot and an occasionally high speed blast at
dawn in the middle of nowhere. Well that got me nailed when I got clocked at
an almost unreal 132 mph in my old 70 Z28. I was very lucky I only got
nailed with every charge in the book and was thrown around like a rag doll
and slammed into the back of the squad car. I then was chewed out... left to
sweat it out until finally he let me go only because I stopped and he was
not about to call a chopper to pursue me. I was lucky it was a small town
cop in ND. I thought for sure I was going to jail.

Overall the experience cost me all my points in the state of North
Dakota but one (so any violation would of cost me my license), about $1800
in fines, class charges, etc., 100 hundred hours of community service, and
one pair of $5.99 boxer shorts.

[Chevelle-List] Fwd: cell phone

2002-07-18 Thread Z16CHEVELLEGUY
This was an email sent to me from a friend last month.
 Larry (z)
--- Begin Message ---
For those of you who don't know, I lost my dad to a motorcycle accident on Wednesday, June 19th. We are making it as well as can be expected. My dad was taken from us way too early because someone was more concerned with answering their cell phone than paying attention to the road. He was on his motorcycle and was stopped behind a van for some construction and the person behind him was traveling approximately 50 MPH and never hit his brakes. The accident happened in seconds and that is all it takes to have an accident. I would appreciate you all forwarding this message to your friends and family to remind them all that while at the wheel of an automobile concentrating on the road is at the utmost importance. Reading, shaving, playing with the radio and most of all talking on a cell phone are things that happen too much these days. The drivers around them are Mothers, Fathers, Brothers and sisters and loved ones !
to other people, not just people in cars. Thank you all. Mark

I would agree. Any parts that can be rebuilt should be & anything that has
to be replaced should be replaced with gm replacement parts wherever
available.
Only in the case of where a part has to be replaced & is not available as a
gm replacement should aftermarket parts be allowed.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Race is on

2002-07-18 Thread Herbert Lumpp

I'd say almost every time I drive my Vette (keep in mind the engine is
pretty stock and it's not very fast) someone, young or old (crusty) wants to
race!

I was in traffic Tuesday on my way home from work and some guy in a 5.0 next
to me (with a dump truck right in front of him) starts hopping on it and
looking at me! What did he want to do, race for two feet? All I could
think was: "What a dumbass, no wonder he's driving a 5.0."

Yeah Chad... Sorry, I figured you would reply on this one, but believe
me if everyone over the age of 25 voted, I think a large number would agree.
I mean just the maturaty level jump is huge between 16 and 18 is huge. It
happens again at 21 and it seems about your mid twenties most people have
grown up at least in reguards to more serious matters. When I was your age I
knew everything and I was invincable, but now that I am older I look back
and say I wish I listened to my dad... or I wish I did this instead of this.
Wait till you hit your mid twenties... heck I'm afraid of what I'll be
saying when I'm forty or fifty.

I know how you feel and you can hardly wait to drive, but I know I did
some plain flat dumb things at that age and I see even worse stuff then that
everyday from young drivers. Obviously not all young drivers do stupid
stuff, but I know the statistics show most young drivers get into more
accidents and more tickets then any other age group. I just finally emerged
from the under 25 bracket and wow did my insurance drop. Reality would maybe
say 16-18 yr olds can only drive during such hours or on such roads, much
like when you get a permit for a motorcycle. I'm sure you will be at least a
smart drive Chad as you won't want to bang up a Chevelle or mustang or
whatever, but most kids don't have that pride in their car. Also driving
like any skill will get better as you do it more. I think we all made some
young and dumb blunders in our day.

Don't feel bad Chad... I don't pick on young driver's other then that.
I'm the same way with DWI's. Just way too loose of rules. There are just too
many people who shouldn't be driving. Some elder drivers scare me as well.
Some of them can barely walk, none the less hit the brakes if a kid was to
dart in front of them. Then there are just the unskilled. I was visiting my
mom last weekend and she in reality can't back up a car unless she goes
perfectly straight. She can't parrell park. She can't see very well at
night. I'm sorry to say, she shouldn't be driving with full privilages. If a
guy operating a crane or a tractor was like that...they would be
fired.

Overall... most people today think it is
their right to drive a car, instead of the privilage that it
is.

Dave also mentions some very good points as well.

Oh yeah Paul, you are on the money! My dad never let
me forget that driving was a privilege. You have the

do NOT have the right to drive. Simply drawing breath

don't seem to be testing hard enough! Oh yeah, since
the road signs are in English, we should test in

Go to a country that already allows that under their

Which brings up a thought or
two:

We, the people that, in most cases, turn wrenches
on these cars, lift heavy metal parts on and off, install glass as needed,
and know from life's experiences what can happen,  have more of a close
"in-touch" relationship with cars. We have more of a realization
of several thousand pounds of glass and metal flying down the road at speeds
unknown to man just a hundred years ago.

Although some of us are guilty of indulging in the
thrill that a muscle car is so famous for, and I can't say I won't ever
myself. I guess it's like rock climbing or parachuting..with added
dangers for innocent bystanders and precious classic cars that may not
survive to be passed on.

Compare that to a young person ( and some older
ones ) who only think to get in, turn the key, and press the pedal farther
down to hurry up to get to an "important appointment". I know that accidents
were stressed to me in drivers training many years ago, but people
tend to think it won't happen to them and what can happen if they are
not careful goes to the back of the mind. Getting there quickly while doing
other things that "need" to get done are what is on their
mind.

The thought of the car I am rebuilding not having
many of the safety features of today's cars also plays on my mind at times.
More than once I have wondered what it would take to install anti-lock
brakes and air bags on my 69 Chevelle.

Steve

I agree too!  BUT, I've seen people reading newspapers,
shaving, putting on make-up, eating two-fisted hoagies, etc. while behind
the wheel. A lot of people are just plain oblivious to the dangers of
distraction behind the wheel. My point is where do you stop? The starting
point should, in my opinion, be better driver ed programs.

- fan/alternator belt - cloth wrapped or GM replacement belt , or is either

- Undercarriage - painted same as body - acceptable, unacceptable... how did
they come from the factory??
- Drive Shaft - polished finish or not?

[Chevelle-List] Keeping a car Original???

2002-07-18 Thread DonnieG67

I had a question from a member the other day that wants to replace a few
parts on his Unrestored 70 SS. It's an unmolested, unrestored, matching #'s
LS6 with around 70K miles. Original paint, interior, motor, etc.

He would like to replace some of the worn parts... belts, hoses, etc at
what point would you guys consider the replacement of parts to put him in a
Original Restored Catagory???

I believe things like a motor change, paint job, interior replacements (such
as carpet, headliner, etc...) would knock him out of the Unrestored Original
class.

Maintanence items, such as alternator, water pump, brakes, tires, etc I
think would be OK... as long as they were OEM replacement parts.

What are your opinions??

[Chevelle-List] Right/Privilege?

2002-07-18 Thread Paul O'Brien

When I was 16 it was a privilege to drive. My dad gave me his old car, a 65
Dodge Polara wagon with a 383 v-8,185,000 miles on it and a spun bearing. I
worked at a shoe store for $1.35 an hour and spent all of my spare time
rebuilding that engine so I could drive. I paid for my own gas, insurance,
repairs, oil. tires, etc, etc.
I thought it was a privilege to drive and I got crazy too. I was also envious
of the guys that had hot rods like brand new Chevelles with 454's in them and
55, 56, and 57 Chevy's. Now most of the kids around here have newer and better
cars than I do and don't even work. That's not only ridiculous, but bullsh-t.
It is a privilege to be able to drive, but when abused the ones that give the
privilege, have the right and responsibility to revoke that privilege.
Whether you feel right, or privilege, respect the opportunity. (getting down
off of soap box)

Re: [Chevelle-List] Plug Wire Recommendations

2002-07-18 Thread Herbert Lumpp

Hi Craig,

I use MSD SuperConductor wires.  They're a bit pricier
than other brands, but they're rated at 40 ohms per foot, which is very
good.  The only color I've seen is red, btw.

They use spark plug type terminals on the distributor cap end
so they can't vibrate loose.  They also use a double crimp terminal,
meaning the first crimp secures the terminal to the wire, the second crimp
secures the conductor to the terminal.  I haven't had one fail
yet.

On the spark plug end, you can get various angles or choose
the bendable end so you can adjust it to the angle you need.

[Chevelle-List] Plug Wire Recommendations

2002-07-18 Thread crobertson1

I need to replace my present spark
plug wires.  I want to purchase a nice looking set that can be custom cut
and fitted to my car.  What type and brand do you recommend?  I'm not
racing, just showing and cruising.  Thanks.

MMM the good old days
when cops were allowed to be cops.  I bet nobody taped the arrest either
did they.  That ought to start something!

Funny how that works... I was a pretty good driver except for my street
racing at a local underground spot and an occasionally high speed blast at dawn
in the middle of nowhere. Well that got me nailed when I got clocked at an
almost unreal 132 mph in my old 70 Z28. I was very lucky I only got nailed with
every charge in the book and was thrown around like a rag doll and slammed into
the back of the squad car. I then was chewed out... left to sweat it out until
finally he let me go only because I stopped and he was not about to call a
chopper to pursue me. I was lucky it was a small town cop in ND. I thought for
sure I was going to jail.

Overall the experience cost me all my points in the state of North Dakota
but one (so any violation would of cost me my license), about $1800 in fines,
class charges, etc., 100 hundred hours of community service, and one pair of
$5.99 boxer shorts.

"so i bet when you were 16 - you thought it was a privalige
to drive...yearight."I did! Once the Judge at traffic court
informed me that it was! 8). 8 pointsin 6 months. My 69SS was defiantly a
ticket magnet back then. It took yearsto get off the high risk category
from that time. There was a MD State boythe made me his life work during
that time. I wonder if he's retired yet? Hewas always  very pleasant
when he would write me up one.  Maybe Ill pay hima visit once I get
the ol girl restored. Just for kicks after 19 years Istill
remember his full name LOLSeriously, You realize how much a privilege
it is when you come that closeto loosing it. Or loose a few friends in
highschool as I did. They though itwas there right to drive and they did.

I remember when I was 17 and driving a 58 Chevy Belair doing over 100 miles an hour on the highways not realizing what would happen if someone pulled out on you or you blew a tire and anything. Back then kids like me and maybe you though the faster you can go the cooler you are. But today Iam 54 yrs old and have a very high respect for driving and my license. Laws today are not like they were back then, if you got pulled over you would get a warning, today they take your license and throw away your keys. They now have a new law in Pa if your caught without license , insurance or registration you can kiss your car good bye, whether is new or a classic its gone to the impound yard.

I remember when my daughter first got her license. She went to the store just around the corner from me and I stood there watching her drive away and waited for her to come back. Kids today dont seem to have the respect for a car ( not all kids ) they get in and drive like the wind not realizing that if for one second to take your mind off what your doing it can happen. Its a killing machine in the wrong hands and I have seen many accidents with kids involved. Its a great thing to be able to drive not having mom or dad take you anywhere again, not having to sit in the back seat of the family car. Be able to go where you want at anytime, but gotta keep in mind of whats happening around you and the other guy. Today like I said iam 54 I drive a Mercury Tracer station wagon carefully but when my 66 Chevelle Malibu finally hits the road you can rest assure I will be watching the other guy. Drive Safely All
