The strike started 9/14/70 and lasted for 67 days. Some

One question I have is, do you gain HP by using an
electric fan. I have always heard that you do, if so how much. I'm running a 396

  Well,it
wouldn't be the first time I was wrong, nor will it be the last. Still,
I don't think I am in this case. As Imentioned in my first reply, I have just gone
  through this. On a SBC67 Malibu.With a PRC aluminum
crossflow. Including an AT cooler. With plans for an electric
fan. I did my homework before I ordered my parts, just as you are doing
now. In fact, Dale was kind enough to reply offline to a post of mine
regarding the radiator. BTW, thanks again to Dale for that.

  If you're interested,
here's what I learned. The overall width of the radiator (26" in your
case, if I'm not mistaken) includes the tanks, which are installed on the
sides of a crossflow radiator like the one you say you're looking at.
The width of the core on a 26" radiator is 22.5". The dual 11" Spals are
23.46" wide, as Dale points out in hisreplybelow. You cannot
mount those fans on that radiator because of interference from the tanks on
either side. Go ahead and ask PRC to build you one like that and let us
know what they say. Again, you'd need a 31" radiator with a 27.5" core
to mount those - andthat's not going to fit in your 67
  Malibu.

  You indicated that
you're still confused on whether you should go with an electric or mechanical
fan, though you didn't say specifically what confused you.Again,
the mechanical fan will never outperform a quality electric fan at low RPMs,
but the mechanical setupworks for a lot of people. If it
works for you, go for it. Be advised that although PRC will provide you
with the materials, you'll need to fabricate your own mounts forthe
shroud. And the fan may be too far away from the radiator to work
effectively anyway, as you could end up with too much space betweenthe
fan and radiator afterremovingtheshroud extension (assuming
yours is equipped with one.) IMO, the only reasons to go with a
mechanical fan are 1) cost, and 2)wiring / increased current flow.
Some will argue that the mechanical fan is more reliable, but I don't
  necessarily agree with that.

  WRT the setup of your
electric fan, you could wire it to be switched on and off manually, to run all
the time, or to run only in a given temperature range. Engine RPM itself
has nothing to do with it. I'm going with a 185* - 200*
  sensor.

  You haven't said what
climate you're in, but my guessis thatthe 2360 CFM 16"
Spalis more thanenough, especially with a high performance water
pump. If not, you probably have another problem.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Electric Fan
set up versus Clutch Fan set up=response to Bill and more input needed

Bill:
I think, respectfully, you may be off in your assumptions. I am looking
at a PRC aluminum radiator set up. Now, I can go with either a clutch set up
or have a dual Spal electric fan set up. The dilemma is that I need
information prior to moving forward. Why ? If I order the PRC radiator
and go with electrical fan set up, I can order the radiator made with an
internal automatic trans cooler, and the Spal Electric fans will be attached
to the radiator by PRC, along with built in shrouds. So, it will be a custom
made set up. And, it will fit and work.
Now, I have had a PRC aluminum radiator made last summer for my 67
Chevelle SS. I went with a clutch fan set up since I wanted the 67 SS to
have an original look since it is a numbers matching vehicle. I painted the
rails radiator black to have it look original. The PRC radiator keeps the
temps much lower. I kept the old radiator for resale if I ever sell the
Chevelle.
In contrast, I am not concerned with the 67 Chevelle Malibu being
original looking since it has a 383 stroker and other mods. So, I am asking
inputs on whether a fan set up vs. clutch fan set up is the way to go.
My only question is on the set up. I have talked with others who advise
that the electric fans will work at idle and kick off at cruise speeds when
the temperature comes down. Therefore, the two electric fans would be
working at idle and probably have enough CFMs to cool at idle.
I have

[Chevelle-List] Another fan/water pump question

2003-01-30 Thread Brian Zack

Is the
correct way for the clutch-type fan to shroud aspect to be 1/3 into shroud or
1/3 out? My memory is getting me confused. Also, I would like my car to run a
little cooler in the heat of the summer when the A/C is on. I have a stock water
pump.Would you guys recommend a higher flow WP or maybe just the auxillary
elec. fan mounted in the shroud? Sitting in traffic with the A/C on in 95
degrees and above temps, (with a new stock replacement 3-core radiator) It will
run up to about 225 degrees and that is starting to make me a little nervous.
Then I gotta turn off the a/c. Guess I should have saved up for a better
radiator. Are the higher flow water pumps worth the money?

American Racing/U.S. Mags built the INDY style mag in
the 70's, when I worked for them. They were Slotted and were either polished or

There were copies that were not solid, one piece wheels, sold by the bargin
marketers. Don't know there value today, but they were pretty inexpensive in
those days, 14x6, 14x7, $130 a set!!

[Chevelle-List] Bad News On Heads... HELP.

2003-01-30 Thread J. Brady
Well gang,

As recommended by some of the wise men here, I dropped
my 327 double-hump heads off for a magnaflux before
beginning to install them on my motor. I bought them
used and have never used them-

The guy called today and said they have no cracks
(good news) BUT he said they need new valves and will
definitely need guides.. He gave me a price of $80 to
install the valve guides.

My questions are, I'm already out $50 for the flux- Do
I pour the funds into these heads to have them redone?
Can I do the valve and guides myself? It wasn't
mandatory for me to keep the original heads for this
motor or to keep an all original motor by any means,
but I don't want to spend unnecessary funds if there's
a better decision to be made. Please help- I just
bought new springs and retainers for these heads, and
now I'm stumped (and actually pretty PO'ed). I just
bought the Crane Powermax 260-2 cam kit for this
motor, and right now I was planning on using a stock
manifold and a 600CFM carb just to get me back up and
on the road for this summer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated-

It wasn'tmandatory for me to keep the original heads for thismotor or to keep an "all original" motor by any means, but I don't want to spend unnecessary funds if there'sa better decision to be made. Dont know if youre looking for an enclosed or open hauler, but I recently used an outfit called Fine Things Auto Carriers, based out of Oklahoma.

Nice people (husband and wife team), open 3 or 4 car hauler, fast, reliable, friendly, with competitive pricing. They also gave me daily updates when they had my car in the road.

Hauled a non-op car from central Illinois to Los Angeles in 5 days (with 2 weeks advance notice) for $950. An operable car would have been $150 less. Payment is COD when they deliver your car...no deposit (unlike a lot of shippers I talked to).

Give Shannon a call (she handles the business side of things) and tell her Kurt from Rosemead, CA sent you (64 Malibu Convertible). Shell give you a quote then and there on the phone.

Dont try to email them for a quote...best to call, since they always seem to be on the road.

Id use them again in a heartbeat.

Good luck with the move,

I personally have used Passport Transport
and they were first-class all the way. To move a car from southern IL to
eastern Long Island (NY) was about $850 and they are fully insured if anything
goes wrong. Also their trailers are fully enclosed (your car is completely inside
a metal trailer). I say that because I actually saw a car hauler on Tuesday
whose trailer was enclosed by way of canvas flaps that roll down on
the sides. I had never seen that before.

My only experience is
on my Corvette. I had a flex fan on it and no shroud. Corvette
shrouds are even more expensive than for Chevelles, so I decided to try an
electric fan first. I bought a Flex-a-lite Black Magic fan (http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=216) for the Corvette. This fan has an adjustable thermostat, AC
relay, moves 2,800 CFM,and it measures 18 in. x 16
1/8 in. x 4 in.
My limited experience
(before the engine blew from non-heat related issues) was just fine. The
327 ran about 350 HP, and I was happy with the solution. I hope that it
will still work fine with my ~450HP replacement motor...

  Bill:
I think, respectfully, you may be off in your assumptions. I am looking at
a PRC aluminum radiator set up. Now, I can go with either a clutch set up or
have a dual Spal electric fan set up. The dilemma is that I need information
prior to moving forward. Why ? If I order the PRC radiator and go with
electrical fan set up, I can order the radiator made with an internal
automatic trans cooler, and the Spal Electric fans will be attached to the
radiator by PRC, along with built in shrouds. So, it will be a custom made set
up. And, it will fit and work.
Now, I have had a PRC aluminum radiator made last summer for my 67 Chevelle
SS. I went with a clutch fan set up since I wanted the 67 SS to have an
original look since it is a numbers matching vehicle. I painted the rails
radiator black to have it look original. The PRC radiator keeps the temps much
lower. I kept the old radiator for resale if I ever sell the Chevelle.
In contrast, I am not concerned with the 67 Chevelle Malibu being original
looking since it has a 383 stroker and other mods. So, I am asking inputs on
whether a fan set up vs. clutch fan set up is the way to go.
My only question is on the set up. I have talked with others who advise
that the electric fans will work at idle and kick off at cruise speeds when
the temperature comes down. Therefore, the two electric fans would be working
at idle and probably have enough CFMs to cool at idle.
I have already decided to upgrade the alternator to either 100 or 138 amps.

Again, I need other comments from Chevelle or other car owners who have
gone with the electric fan set up. Are you happy or wish you did not go to
this set up and stayed with the traditional clutch fan or flex fan/shroud set
  up.
  Thanks again,

I actually live in San Antonio. I have a '67 Chevelle
SS. Bought original '67 plates ($35 at a swap meet)for it and
registered it that way. If you register the car as an antique you don't
need to get it inspected and it only costs around 60 buck for 5 years.
There is a mileage limit on that though (I believe it's around 1500 a year or
so). If you register it as a "classic" you have unlimited mileage, but
will need to get the car inspected every year.

Hope this helps. Just let me know if you need any more
information.

* Capable of operating on the highway
* Driving to and from -
Auto Shows
Circuses
Parades
Displays
Special Excursions (Sunday drives)
Antique car club meetings
* Driven for testing purposes
* Driving others for pleasure w/o compensation
* The plates can't be used on replica vehicles
* The vehicle can't be used for commercial purposes or to carry a load
* The vehicle can't be used like a regularly licensed vehicle entitling
the antique vehicle to full use of the highway

I have never run into a problem with the troopers around here. Their
regulations are very loose as you can see. At any time I can be taking
a special excursion, testing something, or driving others for pleasure.
I can always say that I am testing my rally gauges that don't work.

This is a state regulated thing though so every state is different. For
example, I paid 100 bucks and I never have to pay another dime. The
insurance company does limit me to 5000 miles a year.

They picked up my car in Northern Indiana, and

owned and operated by a couple of brothers. The enclosed trailer has
hydraulic lifts, and the cars are secured with nylon straps over the
tires. The driver willfill out aninspection report on the car,
noting any scratches, chips, dents, blemishes, etc. You sign it, and are
given a copy. I remember being very impressed by the driver, named
"Larry". We got to talking as he was loading up my car, and he told me
that some times he has to shuffle the cars around in the trailer to unload them,
based on their destination. He told me that you have to be careful where
you decide to park and unload the trailer, don't want to do it in a "bad
neighborhood". Anyway, you asked for a recommendation, I would
highly recommend this company.

California (WHOO HOO!!!). After almosttwo years in this hell
hole,it looks like I will finally be back where I belong. Of
course I am going to miss the no-inspections-for-pre-1973-vehicles law and the
  weather, but nothing else!

Ihave checked with U-Haul foran auto
transport and the auto transport which cost me $150 to move out here is $800
to move back. I decided tocheck out auto transportcompanies
and havereceived severalquotes in the $650 to $900 range.
Does anyone have any advice on a good quality mover who isn't going to
shaft me?The move is from Sacramento area to San Antonio
  area.

  Thanks in advance,

RE: [Chevelle-List] Another fan/water pump question

2003-01-30 Thread gene . nusbaum
I have used Redline's Water Wetter in my off road vehicles for years and it
has worked great. Drops the temp 5 to 10 degrees. It has a kind of soapy
texture and is supposed to make the water slide over the metal parts easier.
At least that is what the sales literature says. In any event it has worked
great for me. And, Redline makes a lot of great products so I trust them.

 Brian,

Have you tried Redline's Water Wetter? I personally haven't used it, but
I've seen several guys here mention in the past that they've used it and
seen reductions in temperature. Definately cheap and easy to try.

Is the correct way for the clutch-type fan to shroud aspect to be 1/3 into
shroud or 1/3 out? My memory is getting me confused. Also, I would like my
car to run a little cooler in the heat of the summer when the A/C is on. I
have a stock water pump. Would you guys recommend a higher flow WP or maybe
just the auxillary elec. fan mounted in the shroud? Sitting in traffic with
the A/C on in 95 degrees and above temps, (with a new stock replacement
3-core radiator) It will run up to about 225 degrees and that is starting to
make me a little nervous. Then I gotta turn off the a/c. Guess I should have
saved up for a better radiator. Are the higher flow water pumps worth the
 money?

Re: [Chevelle-List] Bad News On Heads... HELP.

2003-01-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I agree with Mikey

If there are original heads worth spending a couple of hundred $$$ on it difinately
camel humps.

I would have the guides made and install some 202 and 160 stainless valves and
hardened seats.

André

Probably worth just sticking the money into the heads to have the work done now that
you have them in your pocession unless you wanted to go to vortech heads or are
willing to take a step down in performance with a differnt head. The cheapest way to
go is probably have them done.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Bad News On Heads... HELP.

Jim
