Subject: [Chevelle-List] Movie clips

I've sent this email to the list a few times already but it hasn't showed
up, so here it is again...

Here are a few movies from the Power Tour. They're kinda big so please be
patient - especially if you're on a dialup connection.

 http://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/Bad_Vette.mpg(6.99 mb)

This 67 Vette is (at least this is what I was told) a restored L88 race
car.
Apparently along the way someone broke down and the guy that owned this
car
took it off the trailer and loaded up the broken down car. I guess when
they got to the next town a garbage truck didn't see the Vette and ran
over
it destroying it in the process. I don't know how true this story is but
if
it really did happen I'm sure one of the next issues of Hot Rod will say
 something.

 http://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/Elky_Run.mpg (4.59 mb)

This clip is my one run at the drag strip. When I first pulled to the
line
my shifter jammed up because the reverse lock out pin had sheared off and
was caught up in the shifter. I was able to back out of the starting line
and eventually got the shifter working. I only ran a 13.9 @ 104 but my 60
foot time was 2.6 - I was a bit pissed at the shifter and when the light
went green I started taking out my aggressions!

 http://users.adelphia.net/~hlump/Jet_Truck.mpg(7.84 mb)

This is a pretty cool little truck. It has a turbine engine in it. It
sounds cool but I hear it's not very fast, only 15's in the quarter.

 Enjoy!

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone could provide info on how
best to set up a second battery in my '66? I wanted
to have it available for anything from starting the
car to powering accessories like CD changer and
whatever else may come down the pike.

PS anyone know what size battery should be used with
HEI? My current battery is an Everlast from Walmart
and is for a factory '66 but is only a 630 cold
cranking amp battery. I'm thinking I need one with
more amps for HEI.

Thanks,

Thanks Dale and Kent for the info. The lit I was
referencing said the same thing but I wanted to be sure I wasn't missing
anything.I have searched all over the axle tubes (wire brushed them to
shiny steel) and still can't find the code stamped! The only numbers I could
find was the one cast on the pumpkin. I also noticed that the fill plug wasn't
the familiar hex type plug. I don't know if that's important to note. I guess if
worse comes to worse I'll have to take the 10 bolt out of the car and compare
them side by side.I have taken several
pictures of the rear. You can view them at:

Maybe someone could tell by looking if this is even
a Chevelle rear! I was told it came out of a '65 but who knows.

I appreciate any help!

If you want to replace your front brake hoses but one or both
of the ends inthe line(s) is/are stripped, you can often get away with
cutting through theend with a cutting wheel or hacksaw (as close to the
end as possible), thenslipping a new end on and re-flaring the tube, and
re-attaching it. Mucheasier than replacing the whole steel line. For best
results try to cut offas little of the original steel line as possible. Of
course you have to beplanning on replacing the hose as well.Just a

Ken: You sound like a 67 Chevelle guy to me. If anything's got to go, sell the 57.
It needs the most work and probably $ also. Not knowing your age, if you're 50's or
younger then the 57 was your father's generation. If you're in your 60's then the
choice/dilema is harder. The 67 SS sounds great and probably wins alot of awards. As
another thought, maybe you could sell the 57 and the malibu and pick up a 67 Elky SS
or another 67 SS to make a driver out of. I really envy your dilema though. I wish
I had the room in the garage and some extra $. I'd have a 65 Elky SS driver tow
car. Old car guys get nostalgic on any old car but sometimes we have to make
realistic decisions. Best of luck to you in making yours. Just my 2 cents worth of
thinking out loud! As a closing thought, I was at a show Saturday and saw a 55
Gasser. I have alot of memories of these at the dragstrips from even B4 I could
drive, and while I enjoy looking I don't want to build or own one. I!
'm almost 55 and the era I love the most is the mid 60's. I can enjoy and appreciate
what came B4 and after though. Sorry to ramble. Oh, you asked for opinions not
thoughts!! Take what you want and throw the rest away. Have a great day

Well, after making about 8 passes down the drag strip I concluded that
removing the sway bar didn't make enough of a difference in my car, at
the ETs and speeds I run, to make it worthwhile leaving it off.

I didn't pick up anything in my 60' times and I don't like the fact that

If I get the car into the 10s on muscle, then it may be worthwhile.

Funny this thread should come up. I've been talking to some friends at
the track who say my 60' times would be better and translate into
quicker ETs if I would remove my front sway bar.

My 60' times have been between 1.64 and 1.66 consistently and my ETs,
depending on the humidity, have been between 11.7s and 11.8s.

I took the front sway bar off tonight. Technically, I should get
better
weight transfer because the front end will now rise faster at launch.
I
expect the front of the car will roll to the right more also. I'll let
you know my verdict and whether or not I consider it an improvement.

Remember, this is a drag race only modification where the car is
expected to perform in a straight line. Cornering isn't an issue here.
I
wouldn't even consider removing the sway bar if the car was driven on
 the street regularly.

[Chevelle-List] Gas Gauge checking questions 66

Everything's working as it should except the gas gauge. It works until
there's approx. 1/4 of a tank left, then the needle starts bouncing
around for about 10 miles, then it goes up to full until I run out of
gas. If you don't see it bouncing around at 1/4 left, you're screwed,
as I found out last night on the freeway.

[Chevelle-List] Blower motor switch/relay question

2003-07-07 Thread Brian Zack
Title: Blower motor switch/relay question

In my 70 Chevelle Malibu, my fan speed switch has been acting temperamental lately. With the fan on, I have had to wiggle the fan speed switch and get it in the exact right position to make the fan work and it only works on high. I just leave it on high and it has been working. This morning it was working and when I went to lunch and came back, I couldnt get the fan to blow again. When I wiggle it to try and get it to work, I hear a clicking under the dash from somewhere. The blower relay is in the engine compartment. What is under the dash that could be making the noise? The car has factory AC. When I checked the blower motor when this started happening, I ran a temp. hot wire to the motor and it was working fine. Im thinking it probably is just the fan speed switch. Any opinions?

RE: [Chevelle-List] Retro tires.

2003-07-07 Thread Richard M. Pruett
Mark,

Since no one answered your post, I will try to shed some light. I am old
enough to remember bias ply tires and how they rode. In fact, I use to sell
tires when the new radials were first coming out; I was a very young man!
As I remember, bias ply tires were rough riding and did not give you the
feel of the road that the radials do today. You will probably forfeit about
2/3 to 1/2 of the traction of a radial. If you had nylon cords, they would
develop a flat spot after sitting for a while, say overnite, and bump for
a while until they warmed up.

The poly-glas retro tires you are referring to means they have polyester
cords and fiberglass belts. Decent ride for the time but not the ride a
radial will give you. Steel belts were available as well if you wanted to
feel as though you were driving a half-track. They will not corner as well
and will hydroplane much easier as you will have less traction, less of a
footprint, on the road.

One good thing about bias-ply tires, if you are into this, is that they will
grow when you spin them. In other words, get a larger diameter. Drag
racers use bias-ply tires because they grow and they have a greater
diameter tire; with each turn of the tire, they will go further.

I suspect you are putting Poly-glas tires on to be era or period correct
and that case, the G-60 or 8.25-15 is what we used to sell to the guys

Hope this helps.

 Mark,
Since no one answered your post, I will try to shed some light. I am old
enough to remember bias ply tires and how they rode. In fact, I use to
sell
tires when the new radials were first coming out; I was a very young
man!
As I remember, bias ply tires were rough riding and did not give you the
feel of the road that the radials do today. You will probably forfeit
about
2/3 to 1/2 of the traction of a radial. If you had nylon cords, they would
develop a flat spot after sitting for a while, say overnite, and bump
for
a while until they warmed up.

One good thing about bias-ply tires, if you are into this, is that they

If you can get a
thermostat to control it, even better. I have a Flex-a-Lite Black Magic
fan kit with the thermostat so I can make it come on at any (reasonable)
temperature I want. If Andre's fans will work for you (since you may have
better access to them), you should still be able to use an outside thermostat
and relay (as Mikey said) to control it. Some people like to have a switch
they control in the car so they can turn the fan on early (like if they know
they will be sitting for a while).

  In
  my 70 Chevelle Malibu, my

have had to wiggle the fan speed switch and get it in the exact right position
to make the fan work and it only works on high. I just leave
it on high and it has been working. This morning it was working and when
I went to lunch and came back, I couldnt get the fan to blow again. When I wiggle it to try and get
it to work, I hear a clicking under the dash from
  somewhere. The blower relay
is in the engine compartment. What is under the dash that could be
making the noise? The car has factory AC. When I checked the
blower motor when this started happening, I ran a temp. hot wire to the motor
and it was working fine. Im thinking it probably is just the fan speed
  switch. Any opinions?

 Mark,

Since no one answered your post, I will try to shed some light. I am old
enough to remember bias ply tires and how they rode. In fact, I use to

As I remember, bias ply tires were rough riding and did not give you the

about
2/3 to 1/2 of the traction of a radial. If you had nylon cords, they would
develop a flat spot after sitting for a while, say overnite, and bump

The poly-glas retro tires you are referring to means they have polyester
cords and fiberglass belts. Decent ride for the time but not the ride a
radial will give you. Steel belts were available as well if you wanted to
feel as though you were driving a half-track. They will not corner as well
and will hydroplane much easier as you will have less traction, less of a
 footprint, on the road.

One good thing about bias-ply tires, if you are into this, is that they
will
grow when you spin them.

Your analysis was right on point. But, take a look at the Old Price Car guide and see how these cars are appreciating.

Thanks.

Not knowing your age, if you're 50's or younger then the 57 was your father's generation. If you're in your 60's then the choice/dilema is harder. The 67 SS sounds great and probably wins alot of awards. As another thought, maybe you could sell the 57 and the malibu and pick up a 67 Elky SS or another 67 SS to make a driver out of. I really envy your dilema though. I wish I had the room in the garage and some extra $. I'd have a 65 Elky SS driver tow car. Old car guys get nostalgic on any old car but sometimes we have to make realistic decisions. Best of luck to you in making yours. Just my 2 cents worth of thinking out loud! As a closing thought, I was at a show Saturday and saw a 55 Gasser. I have alot of memories of these at the dragstrips from!
 even
B4 I could drive, and while I enjoy looking I don't want to build or own one. I!'m almost 55 and the era I love the most is the mid 60's. I can enjoy and appreciate what came B4 and after though. Back in the old days,Chad,we jacked up our cars with air shocks and silly
extended shackles because we couldn't get wheels with the correct
backspacing to make larger tires fit inside the wheelwells, where they
belong. Jacked-up rear ends look dumb, handle like crap, and cause wheelhop
like crazy. Sorry for being so blunt.

my dad told me that all of his cars, he used to airshock the back up and
put
some L-60's in the back. said they were like 11 inches wide. They were
cool, and I always wondered why nobody does that nowadays. they look
neat,
makes it look muscular. my dad said that the front tires used to wear off
quicker than the back, but since he did burnouts every once in a while,
the
back tires used to match up with the front, lol. bye.

If you had nylon cords, they
would
develop a flat spot after sitting for a while, say overnite, and bump
 for
a while until they warmed up.

The poly-glas retro tires you are referring to means they have
polyester
cords and fiberglass belts. Decent ride for the time but not the ride a
radial will give you. Steel belts were available as well if you wanted
to
feel as though you were driving a half-track. They will not corner as
well
and will hydroplane much easier as you will have less traction, less of
a
  footprint, on the road.

One good thing about bias-ply tires, if you are into this, is that they
 will
grow when you spin them. In other words, get a larger diameter. Drag
racers use bias-ply tires because they grow and they have a greater
diameter tire; with each turn of the tire, they will go further.

I suspect you are putting Poly-glas tires on to be era or period
correct
and that case, the G-60 or 8.25-15 is what we used to sell to the guys
during those days. The F was a 7.95.

  Hope this helps.

Any comments on the retro bias ply tires that Good Year and Firestone
 make?
I am of the age where everything I have owned has had radials. I am
 curious
about the traction of the bias ply vs. the radial. I expect the ride to
 be
a little rougher, smoother ride is a benefit of radials.

I ordered Good Year Poly Glas F60's for my Chevelle, my build sheet had
 the
  code for 15 F60.

Clint, if you like the way it is now, wait until I get the new Ron Davis
radiator setup installed. In addition to the custom fabbed rad, they're
building a totally cool shroud to mount the fans on and a matching
recovery
 tank!

I have a pair of 12 Spal fans, part number 30100176, and they do a
wonderful job keeping my 454 cool. They aren't cheap at $150 or so
each.
I'm using a relay with a thermostatic switch and I also have a toggle
 switch
under the dash to override the thermo switch when the A/C is running.
