FWIW, My 70 Camaro had one and I hated it. If you weren't in the city, or within 20 miles of the radio station, reception sucked! It can be a status thing (as in, yeah, 454 with 4-bolt mains, 3/4 cam,12.5:1 TRW's, and a Holley double-pumper) or simply peace of mind knowing you have a stronger lower end if you ever need it. There are lots of things, but the best change you could ever make is shocks. You can get new bushings. Rubber is OK if yours are old will improve handling and feel. If you already have good rubber bushings, you can change to polyurethane which will tighten things up. Opinions vary. Some people think that the poly bushings are too harsh and noisy. I like them. You can mix and match, by replacing the sway bar hardware with poly and keeping the rest rubber for comfort. You could buy new seats with nice, firm padding and good side bolsters. You could upgrade your tires to larger wheels (~17x8) and use modern, low profile rubber like a 275/40/17 tire. You could upgrade your steering to a higher effort faster ratio box for better road feel. Probably some other things... [Chevelle-list] To antenna or NOT TO ANTENNA, that is the question.
Is this strickly a 1969 "item?" Where would I get an antenna lead? It's an 18 inch coax cable between windshield antenna and the radio. Can one be made somehow? Or whaaat!!? Re: [Chevelle-list] To antenna or NOT TO ANTENNA, that is the question.
It is true that the AM antenna will not effectively pick up FM. The way the AM only radios were made, utilizing a cheaper grade antenna with a higher grade internal receiver, it is virtually impossible to use an AM only antenna for FM stations. That is why when you have an AM/FM conversion done on radios the internal receiver is changed also. James Signature Clock Gauge Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Shopping - with improved product search

RE: [Chevelle-list] The GR8PMKN
Title: Message I hope I did Scott. Turned out that at least#8exhaust lobe was flat. I haven't seen the cam yet but the shopdoing the investigating called and just said, "What kind of cam are you going to put back in?" That was causing the minor backfire out the exhaust and hopefully the extensive "clicking" I was hearing. As it got worse, it was also causing a "knock" but only sporatically. At times it sounded like a rod or a main. It'd idle fine with no noise, then start knocking for maybe 10 seconds, then stop again. Maybe it wasn't anything with the injection or ignition to begin with - I hope, I hope. I talked with Harold Brookshire of Lunati (formerly Ultradyne) about a new cam. He's grinding me one with a larger lobe separation (114º) than the off-the-shelf Comp cam I had (110º) that he and other FI gurus said would be better for a FI engine. He also said that most cams tend to close the valves very quickly and that can sound like rockers out of adjustment. Makes some sense as I never was really happy with the lifter noise and could never "seem" to get them adjusted so they'd be quiet. He said his grinds close the valves about 20%-25% slower/easier so they don't beat the seat to death and cause the minor clicking. Hopefully it was just the cam causing the problems. When I had the 700R4 put in, they thought the injectors were too loud but they found my oil pan and rear main oil leak. Had the oil pan/rear main replaced along with a new oil pump, then the knocking starts to rear its ugly head. I'd get one thing done and another would seem to crop up. Hopefully, it's just the cam this time. I hope to have the cam next week and put the GR8PMKN back on the road. I already missed the Goodguys event at Ft. Worth and a couple of local shows/cruises because of it. I want my car back to drive - argh! Hang in there Dale, you'll have it back soon enough. I have a vast amount of fuel injection knowledge when it comes to Harley Davidson Motorcycles. I'm a (former for the moment) Certified Harley Tech. and have gone to a couple of fuel injection schools in Milwuakee, Wisconsin. There are some differences on automotive systems (speaking of late model cars only). I haven't seen any of the systems like you have had installed on the GR8PMKN. I'm stillvery new to the Musclecar scene but I'll get up to date on all of this stuff eventually. I will have some time on my hands, as I just got Downsized from my job. I know just how you feel about wanting to have the car to enjoy. I just wish I had the money to get going on the restoration. Oh well, I'll find a new job and will get the '69 up and running one of these days. I waited 20 years to get the car so if it takes a couple more to get it restored, so be it. You think the primary purpose of wings are to PREVENT flight. You take your helmet along when you go to buy new eyeglasses or check out cars. You are happiest when your street car's tires are worn to racing depth and the wear bars are showing. When something falls off of your car, you wonder how much weight you just saved. Your email address refers to your race car rather than to you. You've paid $4.00 a gallon for gas without complaining. You bought a race car before buying a house. You bought a race car before buying furniture for the new house. You're looking for a tow vehicle and still haven't bought furniture! The requirements you give your real estate agent are (in order of importance): 1) 8 car climate controlled garage with an attached shop. 2) Outside parking for 6 cars, a motor home, a crew cab dually, a 28' enclosed trailer and a 34' 5th wheel. 3) 3 phase 220V outlets in the garage for your welder. 4) A grease pit. 5) Deaf neighbors. 6) Some sort of house with a working toilet shower on the property - or - hookups for the motor home. You sit in your race car in a dark garage and make car noises and shift and practice your heel and toe, while waiting for your motor to get back from the machine shop. You have enough spare parts to build another car. More than one racer supply store recognizes your voice and greets you by name when you call. You think the last line of the Star Spangled banner is: Racers start your engines! People know you by your class, car number, and car color. You astound the clerk at Sears by bringing in a snapped breaker bar every other week or so. Your family brings the couch into the garage to spend time with you. A neighbor asks if you have any oil, to which you query, Synthetic or organic? and they reply, Vegetable or corn. You enjoy driving in the rain on the way to work. You always want to change something on your street car to make it handle better. You've tried to convince your wife you needed that flow bench to fix the air filter on her station wagon. You save broken car parts as momentous. You've found your lawnmower runs pretty good on 108 octane gas (but doesn't particularly care for alcohol). The local police and state highway patrol have a picture of your car taped to their dashboard. Instead of pictures in your wallet, you have time slips. You quote your street tire wear life in weeks rather than miles. After you tell your wife where you'd like to go on vacation she answers: Why...is there a race there? You know at least three 1-800 numbers to aftermarket parts houses by heart. You are on a first-name basis with owners of every local speed shop. You want to take apart and rebuild things, even though they are not broken. You have the monetary equivalent of a lunar rocket invested in it, but your car still won't cut a good light or run the number. You own a vehicle that has at least 500 horsepower more than when it came out of Detroit. You look for hi-po cars in the movies and try to guess what engine size, tire size, and whether or not it has nitrous in it. You are the type of person who goes postal when you have to sit in a traffic jam for more than five minutes, yet you can spend five hours in the staging lanes. Every stoplight becomes a practice tree to test your ability to tree the guy in the other lane's eyes out. You wash your car like it was your firstborn child, you tend to its needs like it was your own body, you protect it like it's your family, then you drive it like you stole it. You understand racing is a way of life, not just a means of transportation.
[Chevelle-list] Tools Explained
Couldn't resist one more. ___ Tools Explained Here's a list of tools and their typical usage. Anyone who has spent time working on cars will be able to relate to this. HAMMER: Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate expensive car parts not far from the object we are trying to hit. MECHANIC'S KNIFE: Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on boxes containing convertible tops or tonneau covers. ELECTRIC HAND DRILL: Normally used for spinning steel Pop rivets in their holes until you die of old age, but it also works great for drilling rollbar mounting holes in the floor of a sports car just above the brake line that goes to the rear axle. PLIERS: Used to round off bolt heads. HACKSAW: One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle. It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes. VISE-GRIPS: Used to round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand. OXYACETYLENE TORCH: Used almost entirely for lighting those stale garage cigarettes you keep hidden in the back of the Whitworth socket drawer (What wife would think to look in there?) because you can never remember to buy lighter fluid for the Zippo lighter you got from the PX at Fort Campbell. ZIPPO LIGHTER: See oxyacetelene torch. WHITWORTH SOCKETS: Once used for working on older British cars and motorcycles, they are now used mainly for hiding six-month old Salems from the sort of person who would throw them away for no good reason. DRILL PRESS: A tall upright machine useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, splattering it against the Rolling Stones poster over the bench grinder. WIRE WHEEL: Cleans rust off old bolts and then throws them somewhere under the workbench with the speed of light. Also removes fingerprint whorls and hard-earned guitar callouses in about the time it takes you to say, Django Reinhardt. HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK: Used for lowering a Mustang to the ground after you have installed a set of Ford Motorsports lowered road springs, trapping the jack handle firmly under the front air dam. EIGHT-FOOT LONG DOUGLAS FIR 2X4: Used for levering a car upward off a hydraulic jack. TWEEZERS: A tool for removing wood splinters. PHONE: Tool for calling your neighbor Chris to see if he has another hydraulic floor jack. SNAP-ON GASKET SCRAPER: Theoretically useful as a sandwich tool for spreading mayonnaise; used mainly for getting dog-doo off your boot. E-Z OUT BOLT AND STUD EXTRACTOR: A tool that snaps off in bolt holes and is ten times harder than any known drill bit. TIMING LIGHT: A stroboscopic instrument for illuminating grease buildup on crankshaft pulleys. TWO-TON HYDRAULIC ENGINE HOIST: A handy tool for testing the tensile strength of ground straps and hydraulic clutch lines you may have forgotten to disconnect. CRAFTSMAN 1/2 x 16-INCH SCREWDRIVER: A large motor mount prying tool that inexplicably has an accurately machined screwdriver tip on the end without the handle. BATTERY ELECTROLYTE TESTER: A handy tool for transferring sulfuric acid from a car battery to the inside of your toolbox after determining that your battery is dead as a doornail, just as you thought. AVIATION METAL SNIPS: See hacksaw. TROUBLE LIGHT: The mechanic's own tanning booth. Sometimes called a drop light, it is a good source of vitamin D, the sunshine vitamin, which is not otherwise found under cars at night. Health benefits aside, its main purpose is to consume 40-watt light bulbs at about the same rate that 105-mm howitzer shells might be used during, say, the first few hours of the Battle of the Bulge. More often dark than light, its name is somewhat misleading. PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER: Normally used to stab the lids of old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splash oil on your shirt; can also be used, as the name implies, to round-out Phillips screw heads. AIR COMPRESSOR: A machine that takes energy produced in a coal-burning power plant 200 miles away and transforms it into compressed air that travels by hose to a Chicago Pneumatic impact wrench that grips rusty suspension bolts last tightened 40 years ago by someone in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and rounds them off.
Re: [Chevelle-list] The GR8PMKN
Dale, How your motor is acting is how mine was when my cam went out. It had a knock, a big one, but it wasnt consistent. At idle it sometimes had it, then wouldnt. Usually if I got the RPM's high enough, it went away. Also caused the motor to run like crap, misfire badly. Eventually it got worse(drove it alot trying to figure out what it was), and it knocked all the time. Good luck with yours- -Tim

This is getting really confusing. I am hearing that this BBC shroud doesn't cover the whole radiator core. I also heard that the 68 does, but the 68 used a short water pump, which places the fan in a slightly different location? Also need different pulleys. Thinking strongly on going with a custom or shroud from an A/C company if I can't find a good GM shroud for my 69 BBC. Steve Steve, The BB fan shroud does not cover the whole radiator. I have the original GM one on my 70. The small block one does not cover the entire radiator either. The only shroud that will cover the whole radiator is the 71-72 BB shroud, which are much bigger than the 69-70 one. The 71-72 shroud will allow you to put a 19" fan on there as opposed to a 17". I got the part number from GM for the 69-70 shroud. Tom
[Chevelle-list] Decal placement
Where do ya'll put the Team Chevelle ACES decals? Is there any preferred or standardized place? TIA BL
RE: [Chevelle-list] Part # look up please?
Tom, Yeah that's what I have been hearing. I was trying to determine if there was a special A/C shroud that nobody was selling new/repro because of that. Looks like GM screwed up on this part. As such I won't be going with a stock shroud for a 69 anyway.I heard the 68 BB shroud did fit the whole radiator as well, but with the short pump it changed things. So GM made this tough for us 69 BB w A/C guys. Does the 71-72 shroud fit well without anymodifications? I am assuming that's what you used? Re: [Chevelle-list] To antenna or NOT TO ANTENNA, that is the question.
An antenna for the FM broadcast band is typically a little longer than 2 feet. That's a quarter wavelength. A low impedence coax cable (50/75 ohms) is usually supplied with them. It would even be possible to transmit on it. AM radio wavelengths could be measured in miles so any AM antenna is going to be too short. Most AM receivers have a little adjustment in the side (varible capacitor) to tume in for best reception. An AM only antenna should have a coil (inductor) at the base to make it appear electrically longer and would be bad for FM recption. I could'nt tell you what's in a windshield antenna... On my '65, I have a 19 1/2 antenna on the back where the broadcast one used to be, and use it with a 2 meter ham radio. I don't have any overheating problems at all if that is what you are concerned about. Just put a nice heavy duty clutch fan on to pull the air through and you will be fine. Tom

Re: [Chevelle-list] to paint original color or not?
Well, my opinion about color is that you SHOULD keep the original color. If it's the green I had, I wouldn't get rid of it. You know I had my car Chevelle painted Pearl White because I could stand that bland, semi-bright green. But now, if I had it to do all over again (and when I do repaint it) it will be back to the original color I donno about the points, but when you see that color all spankin' new again I think you may want to keep it! [Chevelle-list] How Do I UnSubscribe? PRONTO!!!!
Nah. Just joking... You guys aren't gonna rag on me!! :) Seriously, A viewer to my site sent me a question that I figured you brainiacs could answer with ease: Can you be of any help to me: I own a 69 Chevelle which is still painted the original yellow. The car needs an added color as the yellow is too much. I want to paint the hood trunk black stripes as came out on the 70 Chevelle. Can you please tell me if this was an option on the late 69's? Also, If you guys have any other info I could get from you about this project, please let me know so I can inform him... Thank you. Best Regards, Charles C. Campbell - Detroit, MI. [Chevelle-list] 64 El Camino-Bench Seat Needed
I'm picking up a 1964 El Camino tomorrow. It needs an entire interior, but what I really need immediately is a bench seat. This one is missing. Anyone know what years will interchange and more importantly, does anyone know of one that is for sale? BTW, I'm in Maryland! Thanks! Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 Stripes
Some say yes, some say no. I have seen a 69 that is supposedly documented with the 70-72 stripes although I have never seen the paperwork. You can get a stencil kit from any restoration parts supplier. Tom
Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 Stripes
Talking about 69 stripes, before I did the restoration on my 69 lemans blue chevelle there was a pin stipe doun the sides actually 2 pin stripes from front to rear. Was this an option and does anyone have a picture of the correct stripes on their car Thanks again Joe
