Re: [Chevelle-list] Today's chuckle

2006-02-20 Thread John W. Lonadier, Jr.
She did nothing but complain about it from the first day I brought it
home. She said 1) it was too loud, and that was when it still had the
factory style quiet mufflers and the resonators, it now has Flowmaster
40's, 2) it smells old on the inside when she did get close enough once
with the door open, 3) the exhaust stinks, when I pull into the garage
and don't shut it off soon enough and the garage fills with exhaust when
I walk into the house that's the first thing she says. That's just a
couple things she says. That's when I started telling her I bought it
for "ME".

Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 Chevelle brake pedal drops to floor

2006-02-20 Thread MICRLASER

Check the rear wheel cylinders.  You say they were rebuilt instead of
replaced?  The brake warning light comes on when A) the parking brake is
set, B) when the shut off pin inside the distribution block closes to prevent
complete brake failure.  I've seen this a number of times on GM
vehicles.  The best way to tell is to pump up the pedal and have someone
hold it while you crack loose the lines at the master cylinder.  If
you get pressure there, the problem is behind the distribution block (rotted
metal lines, or bad wheel cylinders)

Re: [Chevelle-list] 69 Chevelle brake pedal drops to floor

2006-02-20 Thread John Nasta
Could be a blown rubber brake hose or other bad leak. The level in the MC
being only 1/4" low could mean that it just blew recently. If the level
keeps getting lower as you use the brake, you definitely have a leak (you
can test this w/o actually driving anywhere). Check around the rubber hoses,
backing plates, and wheel cylinders to see if they have been wet recently.
Try the brake several time w/ the car parked and running, and see if there
are any fresh drips under the car after applying the brake a bunch of times.
Don't "test" it so many times that you run the MC dry, but if the level
continues to drop, you have a leak. If the level stays the same but the
pedal keeps going to the floor even if you pump it, it's probably the MC.

p.s. It helps to use a relevant subject line.

Need some advice on brakes.Second time out last April, my brakes
failed on my '69 Chevelle. Had a repair shop that I have delt with in the
past and was very satisified with their work look at and make the repairs.
The master cylinder was replaced as well as the rear shoes and rebuild the
rear wheel cylinders . Checked the front discs and they were fine . Brakes
were working fine until yesterday...brake pedal went to the floor and the
brake lite came on . Good thing this happened in my driveway and not on the
road like the last time the brakes failed . Put the car back in the garage
and checked the brake fluid level and it fine, about a 1/4" fom the top. The
brake job has less then 1000 miles on it. Any ideas went could have happened
? Could it be the vacuum booster?

  Thanks ,

Not the booster. Likely bad master cylinder. Had same thing happen to me with a
brand new car. Left the dealers lot, got to first light and pedal hit floor. It
was standard shift so was able to nurse back to dealer without an accident
(except in my trousers). gm66

"You know, those long things that we had to do after you finished changing those springy things...". Oh, you mean the pushrods? Yep, that's it, the pushrods.
So, we're now off to put in push pins and rocker arms. Gotta love it
This is almost as much fun as when I sent her to the store to get some clay pidgeons for our weekend outing. She worked over the guy at the counter because he couldn't point her to "ceramic doves". LOL, gawd, I love this woman.

We just finished a home project and I asked my lovely wife Linda what she wanted to do next. Her response: "Let's go put in the push-pins". Not sure of her meaning I asked a couple of probing questions--like, what is the subject we're talking about? The '66. OK, what on the '66 needs push-pins? "You know, those long things that we had to do after you finished changing those springy things...". Oh, you mean the pushrods? Yep, that's it, the pushrods.
So, we're now off to put in push pins and rocker arms. Gotta love it

Pete -

In light of what you said below, I agree with the others who've mentioned
the MC.

As for my project - I've gotten the entire front end disassembled, and the
engine & trans out of the car. I discovered that the rear IS a 12-bolt posi,
which makes me happy.

Interior is almost totally out of the car, too, with exception to the dash
and the rear package tray stuff.

Next step is getting a donor roof and welding that on. Then I can take the
body off the frame and do some work with that before doing the body work.

I'm thinking that paint & body will be done sometime this fall. The cold
weather has been setting me back.

I'll post some pics on the blog soon. Thanks!

Pete, I have to agree with Shawn that the MC is at fault here. I was going to
mention that there might be air in the line, but if the car was sitting for any
length of time then the air could have made it's way back up the line and into
the MC therefore "bleeding" themselves of any air. Even new MC's have been
known to fail. Like someone earlier said in this thread "s**t happens"
sometimes. They are machanical and they will fail. I'm glad for you that it
failed in your driveway and not on the highway which would increase the "pucker
factor" drastically.

As far as I can tell, there are no aftermarket parts on/in the brake system .
The car came from the factory with disc brakes on the front and drums on the
rear .I don't think any modifications were made to the brake system by any of
the previous owners and the repair shop didn't say they found any
modifications. I would hope if they found any modifications they would have
told me.I'm going to call the repair shop and see if there is any warranty on
the master cylinder.

How's work coming along on your Chevelle, Karl? Any updates / pictures ?

No signs of leaks anywhere? I'm assuming this is a dual master cylinder ?
If it is you should of had some brake. Sounds like  master cylinder

More than likely your "new" rebuilt master cylinder is kaput. I wouldn't say
it's the fault of the guy who did your brakes, it's just one of those "s**t

Pete,
I know you said they replaced the master cylinder, but with them
going to the floor and no sign of brake fluid on the ground (and a
mostly full MC) It pretty much has to be the master cylinder. I had
the same thing happen to my '69 when I was in college... it's truly
terrifying.

Can you get the brakes to 'pump up' if you pump on the pedal?

Never heard of such a thing. 64-67 take the same tank. The cap off my 65 fit
my new tank and its an SS but in 64 and 65 there was no big block (except the
Z16 and there was no special tank for it). The fuel line is larger for V8's
coming out of the tank ( 3/8 vs 5/16) and the gas sending unit is
different. I know Camaro's have different caps as the cap is either Plain ,
SS or RS/SS but it is exposed.
