[Chevelle-list] Surging HELP!!

2010-04-03 Thread Dave Benjamin
I was playing with my Beaumont Thursday from a stop light. After it started
surging will idle fine but if I hold at 1500rpm it surges 3000 to nothing back
and forth. I think it must be carb. I did change fuel filter and pump but no
change.

Is carb problem ease fix?

I was going to change carb and I already have one here, but when I checked
numbers it is a 17080212. 1980 454 BB. Can I still use it on my 350?

Thank you for any help.

Boys and girls,

Speaking from the industrial side of things, rubber has a shelf life of 5
years, period. Why? Because it is too costly to shut down processes to replace
premutarely failed product. When it comes to suppling a customer with a gasket,
O-ring, diaphragm, expansion joints, etc., we take a strong look at when
product is produced. Many gasket sheets, for instance will have a stamp like
3Q05; meaning it was manufactured in the third quarter of 2005. Another
important consideration is how long has it sat on a distributors shelf before
being sold. Of course, there are other factors to be considered such as
environment, packaging, how it was stored, etc. but these don't come into play
with tires.

How can I say this with out sounding ugly; Dan Z. from the Rubber
Manufacturers Assoc. is a liar! He seals his fate when he states "...without
any scientific information to back it up". Bull Sh!t. He knows good and damn
well, if he can read, that there is a shelf life associated with rubber. If he
is not informed, why is he the spokesperson for this organization? Just someone
else out there trying to cover up! and pr otect, in my humble, but informed,
opinion.

Just some thoughts from the other side of things,

Rich

Manual drum brakes were standard equipment with both power brakes and power
disc brakes as options. If you are converting to power brakes (you say you
need to order a booster) why not consider power disc brakes? Many companies
offer excellent disc brake conversions. Do a Google search for "disc brake
conversions" and you'll see a number of good companies such as Master Power
Brakes, Stainless Steel Power Brakes, Inline Tube, etc. and priced from
$900-$1100 in most cases and contain all parts (lines, booster, etc.) necessary.

I had that problem with my car ounce. If you undo the connector in the trunk or
just behind the bumper and attach it to ground you should see gas gauge move if
it is working. They supply the gas gauge with + and the wire going to the tank
is -. It is variable resistor the more fuel you have the more your gas gauge
reads (better ground from the tank).

Just specifying 15" tires isn't enough; you need the size and aspect ratio.
Try the calculator at http://www.chevellestuff.com/tools/rpm_calculator.htm to
give you an RPM range for a given tire size, rear end gear, and transmission.

FWIW, when I went from a 4-speed to 700R4 I don't remember anything having to
do with wiring, only the correct cable for the kickdown. But then, I had mine
done at Phoenix Transmission in Texas; drove in w/4-speed, drove out with 700R4.

Trouble with that is we only get to vote for them that are "picked"
by them that run the USA. Look at what we have to choose from.
They are all in it for the money & power. I know it's sad.

The video is right on, glad you watched it all, does make you think

If you watch the whole movie you will understand it's not the

The owner lived in Deer Park, TX and still has a phone number there. He

he took it down due to a buyer wanting it off line, but the buyer

other reasons! I have asked him to send me his phone number and he does
have

mine to discuss a solution. At present he hasn't called or given me his
number. He has told me he will have Ebay send me an invoice through them,
so
I will have some protection. First time I have had this proposed to me.
Can

this work???

The car is supposed to be registered in Texas, and has a clear title. I
want
the car, I have the cash, but have concerns about sending any money
without
someone to represent both parties that I can trust and it would be nice
to

have someone inspect it and give me a report that I can trust. I plan on
calling the Canadian Consulate in Dallas to see if they have any ideas or

Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated!

I'm finally getting round to try to even out the door to fender gap on my
72 elky. Both sides are equally bad, a good gap at the bottom & then widen
out significantly at the top. I believe that the doors are hung straight
because the door to rear quarter panels have an even gap. Pictures are at
link below.

  http://www.flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/sets/72157601417827062/

It appears to me that the same adjustment is out of whack on both sides, but
which one?I've never messed with the panels so want to get some advice
before I loosen the fenders.

Is it possible that frame sag is pulling the front of both fenders in? The
body & core support bushings were replaced with poly about 10 years ago.
Honestly I don't remember if I had the problem before it was painted (years ago
also). Painter did take the fenders & doors offback then.
  thank you.

Re: [Chevelle-list] reupholster?

I have done a few Different years in chevelle seats. You will need original
foam to get the right look. I have added padding or thin foam to get rid of the
concave mark your but leaves in the seats over the years and it makes the
covers nice and tight looking. I just did buckets with new foam for a friend
and they looked nice when done.

There are some pics on my web site of differant ones I have done in the past.

Good luck

Pelle- Having done a few seats over the years, more than I’d like, unless
you’re after a custom look, you’ll likely need to buy the appropriate foam for
your Chevelle. This has the rope- like material that you will have to attach
the hog rings to in order for it to have the proper shape. Hopefully somebody
will have better input for you as well. I’m not an upholsterer, just a guy who

  Hi!

  A few Q:s

I'm in the progress of reupholstering the back seat.

Allt that is left of the old back seat is the bare metal base and springs,
due to rats and mould!

  Do I proceed like this

  1. First I need a layer of fabric or jute to protect the foam against the
springs I guess.

  2. Then there's a layer of foam? How thick should the foam layer be?

Any more layers on top of the foam except the new cover?

  3. Then I attach the hog rings!

  Best regards

It can be done, I've done it many times to change the seal, but
you must do it just like these instructions.

It's
actually pretty easy if you know how, but a big risk if you don't. Here is
how to go about it. (read through all steps before you begin)

1 remove driveshaft from yoke

2 take a sharp chisel and hammer, and make a good mark on the pinion and the
pinion nut. So you know how they line up. Turn the pinion by hand
and check for slop. You will need to know what it feels like
for step 7 and up.

3 remove the nut (I use an impact wrench so it's easy to hold)

4 gently tap the yoke away from the axle. Do not hammer the pinion in! You
could damage it or the bearings.

5(optional) I suggest you replace the pinion seal while you have it apart
because they tend to leak often. They are just cheap insurance. Make sure
you put some oil on the lip for lubrication.

6 work the new yoke on to the pinion until you can get the nut started.
Some people (mostly who sell the parts) say you should get a new nut
because it's a lock nut that works the best only once. I
usually reuse the old one. In either case, make sure you use RED
threadlocker, not blue, because it's stronger.

7 Take note of how easy it is to spin the yoke by hand, and how much slop
(usually only a little bit) there is in the bearings. Slowly tighten up
the nut until you hit the mark you made in step 2.

8 If there is still slop and no change in the ease of turning, tighten one
width of the chisel mark past.

9 If there is still no change, make one full turn back to the mark and one
chisel mark width past.

repeat step 9 until the slop is gone and it gets harder to turn again like
it did in step 2.

IMPORTANT! If you go too far, DO NOT LOOSEN. If you have gone a lot too
far, (more than 1/8 turn) you will have to remove the axles, carrier, and
pinion to replace the crush sleeve. This should only be done by experienced
axle people because several measurements must be made to determine the
rotating torque and nut position, etc.

10 put the driveshaft back on

It should be fairly easy to tell when you have gone enough turns to take up
the slop. It will be cut and dry either slop or no slop. All the play will
be taken up in the last 1/16th of a turn on the last revolution of the nut,
so it is hard to be off by a whole turn. After you do this once, you will
get a better feel for it.

Looks like a stamped number from Tonawanda with date 0208 (Feb 8) but
last two would be letters to identify engine hp and trans type (?) like ED, EF,
EG, etc. FWIW, all Mark IV engines have some form of HIPERF, HIPER, etc. cast
in them. :*)

No "G" machine but I put all poly bushings BMR control arms top
& bottom on my 66 Elky 6 yrs ago & no trouble at all. But they come
with grease fittings & I use silicone grease.

Thanks, I didn't think it would hurt but better to ask than screw up.
I have plenty due to rebuilding the BOP 8.2 some fool put in my 66 elky.

This is the Buick SW one with the unobtainable sealed bearings no C-Clips.
I found after searching for months 4 new of these bearings after the
first ones went

out 7 yrs ago & a local place had 2. Now they went out again & ate an axle.
Moser is right now making me two more axles & I need to check the rear end
on my 64 Elky & my 66 Malibu (they have the Chevy 10 bolt). Both non-posi.
