Mine is turning to powder and beginning to break of at the edges here and there. There are four pieces. They are a discontinued item. Finding them in a junk yard wd do no good because they'd be the same age and also turning to powder. So I'm thinking maybe I could paint them , to hold them together, if I knew what kind of paint would adhere and would form a tough film. Anybody have any ideas on this problem? I'm not too concerned with looks, just maintaining them structurally.

So far, it seems to me the best place would be to splice into the power wire to the starter right at the starter, run it up to the switch somewhere under the dash, and back down. It would be hard to see, and you couldnt bypass that without dropping the starter, I think. And on my car, due to a pipe some unknown mechanic ran under the starter, you cant even drop the starter without hoisting the car. I'm not sure I'm figuring this right, but I think so. I'd welcome any opinions on this. Actually, I'm told that not many guys hot-wire anymore. and the usual technique is to smash the ignition switch and stick a tool in there to turn the switch.
[Chevelle-list] Kill switch
What do you think would be the easiest kill-switch to rig up? It has to be one with little likelihood of failing or being bypassed. I'm thinking of one controlled by a switch hidden under the dash or someplace. It seems to me there was a thread on this subject, but if there was, I cant find it in my old mail.

[Chevelle-list] mountain passes
I'm planning a trip this summer and a friend of mine is cautioning me that my car may have trouble getting over passes with an elevation of 10,000 ft. He thinks of my car as an "old car" I guess. If your car is an automatic, you could drive it with your left foot. My daughter did that last year when she had her right foot in a cast. Re: [Chevelle-list] Electrical mystery
In the end, the real culprit turned out to be the alternator. I had written: > I replaced the old > battery today and then checked with the voltmeter to see if the > alternator was charging. Everything seems to be acting normally. Except that the generator light still stayed on. But since the battery read 14.25 @ idle, we concluded that the alternator was charging fine and that the generator light itself wasnt working right. Now I think that the reading must have been due just to the battery being new and fully charged, because a couple days later the reading was down to 11.8 @ idle. I took it to another mechanic and he said at once that I needed a new alternator. So I had him put a new one in and now the whole thing is working fine, The generator light stays off and the readings are what they shd be. John Nasta wrote: > > It may just seem normal because you are running on a healthier battery. > Start it and then disconnect the positive battery cable (don't ground it > against anything). This was one of the things I tried, and surenuff the engine died immediately. But one guy said that you shd NEVER disconnect the pos cable while the engine is running because it can screw up the alternator.
[Chevelle-list] More on the alternator(?) problem
Tonight, after driving ten miles with the headlights on, I got a voltage reading off the new battery of 12.11 with the engine running and the lights still on. Not too good, I guess. A mechanic friend of mine says that you shd really get a reading of about 13.5 volts. And he also says that to know if the alternator is charging right, you also have to read the amperage. ?
Re: [Chevelle-list] Electrical mystery
Thanks to all who commented on the problem. I replaced the old battery today and then checked with the voltmeter to see if the alternator was charging. Everything seems to be acting normally. However, because of the opinions voiced, I suspect that I may still have some kind of intermittent problem with the charging system. I'll just keep an eye on things and see how it goes.
Re: [Chevelle-list] Electrical mystery

[Chevelle-list] Electrical mystery
This is a new one on me and I wonder if any of you recognize this particular set of symptoms: The car has been acting fine, starting up easily (except for a problem sometimes with the neutral safety switch, so I have to give the gearshift an extra shove into Park before starting it.). Today, I started it up and saw that I had no dash lights except the generator light (which has been acting erraticly for months) and the Fasten Seat Belt light. After driving it a few blocks, I noticed that my head and tail lights were very dim, and my hazards werent working at all. Another mile, and the car suddenly loses most of its power, struggling along at about ten miles an hour. A couple blocks of this and it dies on me and wont restart. I tried a jump-start and the battery wouldnt even respond. So I got it towed home. Right now, if I try to start it, there is no sound at all, not even a click. If I turn the ignition to On, I get no dash lights except the Fasten Seat Belt, the Generator, and the Oil. I can turn on the headlights and tail lights, but they're fairly dim. I can work the radio and the wipers, but the wipers are slow, about half-speed. Two possible culprits: We've been having a whole lot of rain -- I'm in San Francisco -- and the battery is a 7-year battery, just a little over 7 years old. Any ideas?

[Chevelle-list] wont start
Here's one that's probably a easy one for some of you to answer. Now and then, when I turn the ignition key to start, nothing happens. No click, nothing. Thru trial and error I learned to give the gear shift (on the column) an extra shove toward "Park" and then turning the key again worked fine. Starts up at once. So, I'm just worried that whatever it is involving the gear shift or being in Park might get worse and give me some real trouble. What's happening here?

Re: [Chevelle-list] Starter issues ...
OK, here's something similiar. Suppose when you turn the ignition to Start, about a fourth of the time you get just the "click", and when you turn the key back to Off and then to Start again, the engine fires right up? I'm making a wild guess that either the starter solenoid or the ignition switch is dying. I cant diagnose electrical stuff, so I sort of follow the philosophy of whatever is getting near its natural life-span, replace that and see if it solves the problem. So what's the natural life span of these parts of the system? And is there a more professioonal way to do it? [Chevelle-list] Extra gas
Any opinions about my practice of carrying an extra gallon of gas in the trunk, in one of those red hard plastic containers? I know it's possible to explode the gas in the tank by having a static electric charge on yurself when you go to handle the fill pipe at the gas station. What about static electricity building up in the container in the trunk? If you can build up static electricity by sliding around on a cloth-covered car seat, or running a comb thru your hair, why couldnt it build up inside the container? (I know next to nothing about electricity.) PS I've been carrying extra gas, either in the trunk or on the bed of a pickup truck, for 30 years, and am still alive to write this. However . . .

It did a great job of keeping the place warm, and was cheaper to operate than oil, gas, or electricity. [Chevelle-list] Gen light, batteries
I borrowed a voltmeter from the fellow next door and checked the battery. Got 12 volts with the engine off, 14.2 with it idling, and then 13 after turning off the engine. That should mean that the battery and alternator, with built-in voltage regulator, are OK, no? I think I'm going to attribute the light coming on the other night to the fact that I had the headlights, heater, and radio going, and just ignore it for now. I ran the car again last night for 25 miles, with the heater, lights, and wipers going, and the gen light did not come on. Maybe it was the gen light itself that had been acting strange. I have no idea how it works. I've heard from various people that the average life of a battery is only 4-5 years, but this one is just about seven years now and seems to me to be strong. I cant remember for sure, but I think I've had batteries last over ten years.

What would you bet it was if the generator light comes on after driving about five miles, stays on for a couple minutes, and then goes off, and stays off? The alternator is new, the belts are new, the battery is a 7-year battery and will be 7 years old next month. Most likely problem? Or no problem? DK

Eg, I've got to get my car smogged this year and it's going to cost me about $80 for starters, just to have it tested at a special "test-only" station. Then, there's gas prices -- about $2.50 a gallon for regular in San Francisco. Bush has been in power for four years now, and we're supposed to be taking over Iraq, so why are gas prices climbing so fast? Of course, it would be nice if any opinions on these car-related facts of life could be presented objectively and dispassionately, without getting into one's personal feelings about religion, sex, machismo, etc.

If our reason for being in Iraq is not to find weapons of mass destruction, or find the ones responsible for 9-11, and of course not to get control of the oil fields, but to "introduce democracy to Iraq", how is that different from the Chinese wanting to bring Communism to South Korea in 1950, or the Russians wanting to do the same in Cuba?

[Chevelle-list] tire specs
I'm a bit confused because of the difference between what my old owner's manual says and the way they mark tires today. Regarding Load Range B, C, or D -- my tires say nothing about load range. What they do say is "Max load 850 Kg (1874 lbs) at 240 KP (35 psi) max pressure". Also, the owner's manual refers to a TPC Spec Number, for example 1001. My tires have no such thing on them, but they do say DOT HYHH EW5 480. Is that the new version? I've got to get some new tires because some psychopath stabbed one of mine the other night. A good tire, too, with only about 13,000 miles on it. DK

To be fair, the protocol for unsubscribing from the chevelle list is not as simple as most similiar lists, where they print the unsubscribe info at the end of every email. I happen to know how to do it because I'm a neatness freak and saved the instructions for it in a special mail folder. Even so, I'm not completely sure just what you're supposed to do. [Chevelle-list] OK youse guys, it's coitains!
The genius has figured it out. All around the interior of the wagon, there are vertical seams between one piece of the vinyl interior and the next, into which I can slip something the thickness of a dinner knife blade. I've got a roll of plumber's tape, that galvanized stuff 3/4 inch wide, which can be cut with tin snips, easily bent, and filed. I'll cut a piece about 3" long, bend it into a Z-shape, insert one end, leaving the other V-shaped end outside, over which a loop of the fishing line will go. The seams are conveniently located for stringing the fishing line across the windows, doors, back hatch, and across the width of the car behind the driver's seat. The curtain material will be hemmed for a curtain rod top and bottom. The fishing line "curtain rod" will be threaded thru the top edge, and disk magnets sewn into the bottom edge like you see on some shower curtains. The magnets stick to the steel roof through the cloth headliner, and they also stick to all the interior metal trim, which is conveniently located below the windows. When you want to close the curtains, you just attach the magnets to the window trim. When you want to open them you attach them to the ceiling. The result should be very convenient, the curtains will be completely out of the way when I'm not using them, and they're easily removable for laundering. When I get this done, I'll take some pix and post them. The only thing I havent figured out is this: the plumber's tape is easy to file into the shape I want and to take off all the rough edges, but I'd like to make the hook part especially smooth. I'm looking for a glue, or silicone, or lacquer or something that I can dip the hook in, which will be kind of thick and will pool enough and dry fast enough to form a smooth coating. Any suggestions?
[Chevelle-list] Acceleration
What does it mean if, when I want to speed up in traffic to change lanes or pass, I push the gas pedal hard but the engine just races with no increase in road speed? The only way I can accelerate is to slowly give it more gas and gradually speed up. This happens both in town at 25 mph or on the highway at 50 or 65. I also have little power when coming off a stop sign, until it gets into 3rd gear. I've got a 350 V-8 with auto TH350 trans, 4-bbl carb. No engine modifications.

Mike Holleman wrote: > > I was a sixties flower child with a 62 Biscayne wagon. I dont understand what you mean by small diameter springs. So far I'm thinking that a system based on using heavy fishing line for "curtain rods" might be the way. Fishing line is strong as hell, very light, and things slide on it easily. The loops in the curtains could also be fishing line, sewn to the hem of the material. The main problem seems to be how to apply hooks to the interior surface, which is all plastic (vinyl?). With age, it's become pretty dried out and brittle, so I dont think it will hold anything screwed into it. The home supply store has these hooks meant for bathroom walls that you just peel off and stick on the wall, but I dont know if those things actually hold up.

Has anybody put up curtains all around the back half of a station wagon? I want to be able to draw them for when I want to sleep in the car on long trips, but out of the way most the time. It looks like a project that will take a lot of imagination to figure out. Anybody got any ideas?

Can anyone enlighten me on this? Your typical maintenance schedule in the owner's manual will say something like, change oil every 6 months or 6000 miles, whichever occurs first. Re: [Chevelle-list] bad news - ICP going under-Wal Mart rant
I can state with great pride that I have never been inside a WalMart in my whole life. Nor a K-Mart. Nor a CostCo. I do confess that I've been in a Target store several times, to get toys for my grandchildren. That's because the two toy stores we used to have in my neighborhood years ago were both driven out of business by the big guys. I dont know why. They had plenty of stuff for any kid, and were reasonably priced, as well as being located close by. I think it's because people now want to bury themselves under mountains of consumer goods.
