What size of tire is appropriate for a '65 Chevelle with 15x7 GM
Rally wheels? (4.25" back spacing).

I'm just looking for a nice near stock-sized tires, or something
that just looks appropriate in the wheel well.

And the same size for all 4 tires.

Thanks!

My right side Tail Lamp Cove Molding was damaged and Car Shop in Orange, CA

left side to the list for $40 plus $4 postage before putiing it on the auction

upper trunk lid to the side of the fender to the bottom of the trunk lid and
fits '65 only.

[Chevelle-list] License Plate Sticker Removal

My original 1965 CA black plate has many (at least 9) layers of license plate

applying so it looks better. Using my heat gun followed by some WD4-40 sounds

Re: [Chevelle-list] Compression Test

2007-07-22 Thread Dennis McGillis
My (1967) MOTOR's Manual says all 1966 327s should have 160 +/-20 lbs.
It sounds like you don't have a compression issue. Leaky valve guides will be
obvious when you go down a long steep grade, step on the gas at the bottom and
get a cloud of white smoke. (Are there any grades in Canada? My cousins are
all in Saskatchewan.)

[Chevelle-list] Hood Alignment

2007-03-24 Thread Dennis McGillis
Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies to my question about hood alignment. There is a
terrific article about it here:
http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?p=413681It also covers
fenders, deck lids, doors, etc. While I cannot attest to the rest, the hood
part really works. Raising or lowering the rear is very easy and takes about
two minutes.

Dennis- My 64 had similar problems as well. I adjusted the hood as far as
it would go within the factory holes on the fender side of the hinges, but it
just wasn’t enough. I assume that’s because it wasn’t anything special to
anyone until I got it in 1990. I know it’s been wrecked a couple of times, and
has front fenders and hood all off of different cars. I ended up opening up
the lower holes just a touch to make everything line up properly.

Dennis, There is nothing simple in hood adjustment. Are the hinges in good
shape? Without major wear? Once you know you are not fighting loose hinges it
is a matter of up and down adjustment of the hinge mounting bolts. The rear
bolts have a small amount of movement, the front have more. Problem is the
effect of a slight change can be big. Mark your hinge bolt postion before you
start so you can see where you started. Make little adjustments. Good luck.

Re: [Chevelle-list] 1965 Trunk Spring Install

2007-02-16 Thread Dennis McGillis
TJ, my trunk spring is in.

The trick seemed to be in finding a way to keep the wheel from falling off.
After two days of looking at it the thought occurred to me that a C-clamp might
work, and it did. A 2" clamp from Ace Hardware did the trick in two minutes.
Your J-21412 tool was absolutely essential. I cannot imagine any way to get
this puppy in without the proper tool. The fact that it works on your 68-72
indicates it works on 1964 to 1972 and others may be beseeching you to borrow
it. It will be in the mail back to you on Monday

Many thanks, I owe you. Be sure to see me when in Southern California

I can only think of one word - finesse. I remember that I had to use some
finesse to get it in right. I remember that the front of the spring was behind
the tab on the upper half of the trunk mount (that thing that is about ½"
square that sticks out to hold the spring in place). I had to gently slide the
spring up, keeping it on the tab, while I slipped the other end in the slot.
If that makes sense - I would probably have to draw a picture and then say
"enter tab A into slot B" to get it more clear.

Does that make sense? Not sure if it will work - I just remember needing a
little finesse. I am sure the "A" body guys on the assembly line did not use
too much finesse, and it worked for them.

Cut them off at the end of the heater core stub, then slice the hose

along the pipe forward of the muffler all the way to the manifold.

I guessed, particularly since the idle is not
perfect, was that I was hearing a  badly leaking exhaust
valve.  A compression check on the 2-4-6-8 bank shows 135, 140,
130, 140.  This seems too good to have a significant valve
leak.

It has a new GMPP Crate Engine with 500 miles
since installation and the tick has been there since initial
startup.

Does anyone have an idea?

forward of the muffler all the way to the manifold.

I guessed, particularly since the idle is not
perfect, was that I was hearing a  badly leaking exhaust valve.
A compression check on the 2-4-6-8 bank shows 135, 140, 130, 140.
This seems too good to have a significant valve leak.

It has a new GMPP Crate Engine with 500 miles since
installation and the tick has been there since initial startup.

Does anyone have an idea?

[Chevelle-list] Battery Label Removal

2006-04-19 Thread Dennis McGillis

Guys, thanks for all the advice about label
removal.  I found the one on top of a new
Costco battery can be easily and cleanly peeled off.  I re-stuck it
over the side label, retaining all the important data.  This leaves the top
all black and clean looking.

Today I bought a new $40 battery at

I hate to try it and then find out it can't be

To do this you should make up a hose to link the
HP and LP ports to allow oil tranfer. If you plug the ports you will get
hydraulic lock. If you were to leave them open you will contaminate the
  steering box.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Schematic Wiring for 65

2006-04-01 Thread Dennis McGillis

Hi Larry! It's good to see you back.

The 350 fired up for the first time last Sunday with a lot of help
from the Chevelle list on issues such as pre-oiling, dip-stick fit,
removing an oil gallery plug, use of EOS at break-in, etc. Today will
be the first drive, after the rain quits.

Your scanned schematic #5 shows a cable and a wire from the positive
post. Mine is the same. The cable goes to the starter and the
smaller wire, 5" of which comes as part of the battery cable, goes to
a small junction block on the body panel in front of the battery near
the top of the fender. In station wagons a red wire goes from the
starter post to the rear window, my SS has no such wire.

By the way, I found a chrome 350 to go on the front fenders for $11 at
www.truckandcarshop.com I'm still looking for the right 350 air
cleaner label to make it look stock.

Call or email if I can help.

Re: [Chevelle-list] Wiring in a 65 SS

2006-04-01 Thread Dennis McGillis

Hi Larry,
My 1965 SS does not have a wire from the starter to anywhere.
Accessory power comes via a second smaller wire (part of the battery
cable) from the battery to a terminal block on the front panel near
the battery. The Factory Assembly Instruction Manual shows it as
being correct.

Two questions: I rewired the car about 1991 with a Perfect
Performance kit (similar to a Painless kit) I am cleaning up my

whether 30 minutes of running would hurt them, I intended to install looms
later.  As you pointed out, no one really answered the
question.

  Question, have you installed a
test pressure gauge while priming the oil pump?

Use the port adjacent to the
distributor or the port above the oil filter.  You should have above 30 psi while
priming the pump with a drill motor.

I have used a modified old
distributor with the rotor part machined to look like the end of a drill
bit.  Turn the shaft in the same
direction as the distributor rotates, clockwise looking down on the
  shaft.

It does take from three to five
minutes of spinning the pump shaft to get oil flow from the push rods.

Today I bought a hex tool socket to get the 3/8" OD oil pressure

was still not giving. Heating the plug is not an easy option due to
proximity of the firewall, freshly painted block and aluminum intake

Thinking cooling might work instead, I sprayed it with an

the plug came out easily.

  Yes you should see oil
coming out of the little hole at the pushrod seat on the rocker arm.
If you don't have the rockers in place and adjusted, the oil
is probably leaking out where the pushrod sits in the lifter.
Also make sure you're spinning the oil pump in the right direction
  - small & big block Chevy distributors spin clockwise.

  Yes
you should see oil coming out of the little hole at the pushrod seat on the
rocker arm.  If you don't have the rockers in place and adjusted, the oil
is probably leaking out where the pushrod sits in the lifter.  Also
make sure you're spinning the oil pump in the right direction - small
& big block Chevy distributors spin clockwise.

I'm spinning the oil pump in anticipation of
starting my new 350 and there is no sign of oil flow in the rocker arm
area.  Shouldn't oil come out of the top of the pushrods?

[Chevelle-list] Oil Pressure Sender?

2006-03-04 Thread Dennis McGillis

Would I be correct in assuming the oil pressure
sender for my new crate 350 goes in the hole in the block near the
distributor?

The plug in that hole is very tight.  My .187"
hex wrench fits loosely and seems in danger of either spinning or
breaking.  A .195" hex wrench will not fit.  Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dennis McGillis

[Chevelle-list] Heater Hoses

2006-02-25 Thread Dennis McGillis

Does anyone have an easy method to remove stuck
heater hoses, particularly the heater end?

When installing new ones is there a way to make
them easy to remove 5 years later?

[Chevelle-list] EOS in my oil?

2006-02-15 Thread Dennis McGillis

Does anyone on the list have experience with
EOS?

I will soon fire up my new GMPP 350 and have
received conflicting info about cam lube.

This is from the Sallee Chevrolet Installation and
Break-in Guide for GMPP Crate engines:Before starting your engine for the
first time, add one pint of engine oil supplement (EOS¹) to the crankcase oil
and then check the oil level.  Once this has been done, prime the oil
system with an oil pump primer tool.

Note¹: EOS P/N 1052367 can be used any time during
the life of the engine.

This is from the label on E.O.S. 1052367 Assembly Lubricant:GM Does
not recommend the use of this or any product as an additive to engine oil.

Can you help?

Thanks,
Dennis McGillis

[Chevelle-list] 1965 Power Steering

2006-01-08 Thread Dennis McGillis

Yesterday while taking the pulley off my power
steering pump I succeeded in bending it.  Maybe a press works better than a
puller.  Does anybody have a pulley for sale?

Thanks,

[Chevelle-list] Bracket Guy?

2005-12-28 Thread Dennis McGillis

There is a "bracket guy" who sells at the Long
Beach, CA Swap Meet.  Does anyone know how to reach him?  I need
longer than stock A/C and alternator brackets for my 1965 Malibu SS (soon to be)
350.

We don't think of 2.73 as a drag racing gear but it seems to do well with
your combination.

[Chevelle-list] Plugs in 350 Intake Manifold?

2005-11-20 Thread Dennis McGillis

  My new 350 crate
engine has four male plugs in the aluminum intake manifold within a few inches
of the thermostat cover.  Two look like 1/2 inch male iron pipe, one (on
the front surface) is brass and the fourth is stainless and larger with a 7/8
hex nut on top.
  Does someone on the
list know the function of the covered ports?  The info that came with the
engine does not mention them.  Is there a web site that identifies
them?

While the engine is out I'm trying to make

my frame is not painted, but seems to have a slight golden hue.  Were they
