2008-11-14 Thread Doug Hart
The number on the block pad sounds correct for the vehicle. I don't know
what the original 1 in front of the 7 is on the pad. Usually just 7 for
model year the a and the last 6 of the vin. You should also have some other
letters and numbers on the pad. Will tell you where engine made, date engine
made and then letters which tell what engine hp and if built with a auto or
4 spd trans.

I recently purchased a numbers matching 67 Chevelle SS - My question is the
VIN number on the car should match exactly the engine block number. Is that
correct? The engine number is 17A152662 and the car VIN is
138177a152662I am missing a 7 in the engine block number versus the VIN
on the body. Any thoughts from you experts?

My only question would be does this average include all new vehicles. There
was a very small percentage of SUVs sold in the 80s as opposed to now. Those
SUVs would skew the numbers for average miles per gallon.

Karl, I agree. Those are very disappointing numbers.

I live in western New York. NY Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton was here about
2-3 months ago patting herself on the back for getting GM several million
dollars in grant money for the development of alternate fuel engines
(Ethanol) . She praised Gm for their 10 year effort. I was surprised to
hear that GM has been working on this for that long.
If I were paying for facilities and engineers for 10 years to develop
alternate fuel engines and this is far as we've come, the whole bunch would
be working somewhere else.
The government should give that money to the aftermarket industry. They
seem to know what we want and respond faster and better than the big guys.
They would do a better job with the fuel issue for sure.

I am a General Motors dealer. The new car warranty should last 36 months or
36,000 miles whichever happens first. If either of these has been reached
then in theory the new car warranty is over. If neither has been reached
then the warranty is in effect. The new owner has no responsibility for
transferring the warranty. The warranty stays with the vehicle.

Has anyone sold a newer car that still has the factory warranty? Did you
have to transfer the warranty to the new owner and if so, what did you have
to do to transfer it?

The reason I ask is I sold my Joe Gibb Silverado and within the first week
the new owner lunched second gear. He took it to the dealer and was told he
needs to transfer the warranty. I have no clue.

Morning..Looking for some help, advice on my problem. I fianlly got my Chevelle out of the garage for a test drive and ran great. Went to re-start and got some chattering , tried again and started up. Back in the garage for more work went to start and same thing again. Originally I had shimmed it up , but then removed one of the 3 shims bolted it back in , started fine and then a few days later same thing again. The engine Iam running is a 350 from a '77 Chevy pickup. I put in a new battery thinking that was the problem, started great again and then back to this chattering. By chattering I mean as if the starter gear was just nmissing the flywheel. But its interminet, I checked my flywheel it shows signs of scraping. I purchased starter sheild thinking it was overheating the solenoid . Then bought a hot shot kit putting the solenoid on the firewall like the old Ford had , thats not installed yet. Today I will attempt to take out the other 2 shimms and see if that moves it closer to flywheel. Few of my questions is how do I measure the teeth on the flywheel under the car ?? Are starters different other than the nose ?? And is it possible this is not the right starter for this engine ? Originall I din't know what the engine came out of so we were using a starer from a Monte Carlo, Camaro 350 engine as a reference. But later found out the it came from a 77 Chevy Pickup. Would I need to get a starter that matches that year and cubes ?? You guys are the best so thats why I come here for help...thanks much John 66 Chevelle Malibu Phila. Pa

  I
talked to Greg at Phoenix and he seems real excited about doing the car.
I'd talked to him a couple of months ago, had him check the website to look
for any potential problems with doing the installation.  Anyway, taking
it down tomorrow morning and leaving it there.  Greg said he's going on
vacation next week and if I wasn't in a big hurry, would I mind leaving it
until he gets back so he can work on it.  Now that's dedication for
you.  Since it's an all day drive down and back anyway, I agreed to leave
the car there for a few extra days.  I'm also going to ask him his
opinion on the 200-4R vs. the 700-R4 for my particular situation since both
  are about the same price.

Wife and I are making a weekend of it and going over

Never said to lay UNDER the car and watch the driveshaft,
Wayne.  It's easy enough to look underneath the car while knealing BESIDE
the car and see the point of the wire tie to see when it gets close to or just
after the third revolution as the tire makes a full revolution.  After
all, you have to have the 2nd person stop you at one tire
revolution.  Unless you have a 4+ gear set, the tie is going to be real
close to where it started (pointing straight down) to determine its final
position at one full tire turn and will indicate a high 2+ or very low 3+ gear
  ratio.

It's not like the fella that wanted to take the hood off
his car and have his buddy ride in the engine bay and look down the carb to
see if the vacuum secondaries opened at full throttle. :*)

Here's another method you can use and takes two
people.  Get a large wire tie and snug it around the driveshaft with
  what's left pointing down (6:00 position) as a reference, i.e., don't snip
off the end.  Make a chalk mark on the tire at its lowest point on
the ground.  Carefully push or drive car one full tire revolution
while 2nd person watches the wire tie on the driveshaft and counts the
full revs.  When the tire has made one full turn, look at the wire
tie.  How many full turns did it make and where it is now in relation
to pointing straight down.  Did it make just over 3 turns - could be
3.07 or 3.08; 3 1/4 turns - 3.23, etc. That will get you close to the
final ratio with whatever wheels/tires are on the car
  now.

Title: GM Strike

The strike was during summer and early fall as I remember. I
had a new vette ordered which was supposed to arrive before I reported to the
air force on Sept 26, 1969. It didn't arrive until Nov 69.

Anyone know when the GM strike was for the 69 or
70 model year?  I have a 70 P-O-P that have the engine and rear axle
coded to October (20 and 17), the transmission in January (27) , and a build
month of March.  Five and three months seems like an unusually long time

If it were me , I would get a
steering column with out the shifter . Install the floor shift. Do not
rebuild the column shift( unless you want to use it later.)Money spent on your
rebuild would be about the same or close enough to the price of a good used
one.

I found another fuse blown on top of my problem
like yours. Two blown fuses. Well i started probing around and found a couple of
wires grounding out.I just started unplugging them and tucking and taping the
dangiling ones and fuse blowing problems have gone away.Hope it is this simple .
Also found some "Jim McCutchin"wires under the hood and took care of them. My
battery was not secured properly, just a lot of stuff piled up and no time or
energy to tackle it until I made time.

  I have 4.10's in it, I had a small
slick on it, If I remember it was a 26" slick, way too small.  I need a
28 or 29" to make it run right.  I took it back to the track not too long
ago and it was still taching out on street tires.  I had it bouncing off
the rev limiter.  Of course it did not hook up either, smoked the tires
all the way through the 60 foot mark, and broke the tires loose again hitting
2nd gear.  Anyone want to donate a set of slicks

  Hello,
      I am
new to this list but have been working on cars for 35 years. Just never
did a complete restoration. I would love to pick some brains on good
sites to find info on the restoration of my 67SS. I have had this car since
1970 and finally have convinced myself that a frame off restoration is in
order. I have it completely stripped and the frame is blasted and primered. I
am ready to start back with the suspension and would like some advice on what
would be the best way to go with both front and rear. It will be driven on
weekends to events and an occasional drag race at the Baytown strip. I want
the ride to be good with traction being second importance. I
would like to know who makes the best components for this application. I want
to replace everything including trailing arms and also upgrade to disc brakes.
Thanks for any and all suggestions, they will be very much appreciated!!!

What I really want is a 69 Elky,Herb. My father
bought a new 69 SS off the showroom floor and I've always had special feelings
  for that year.(had a Motion Performance 69 Nova,too,but that's another story).
What I would like to find is a car with decent paint & body(preferrably
Black/Black),something that can be lived with for awhile. A big block is
preferred but not mandatory. Really want a four speed car so I can switch it
over to a T56 in the future. Since I plan on eventually building the car from
the ground up,a good daily driver is really what I'm looking for. If someone
  would be interested,I have a 91 Chevy custom ext.cab truck I would
  trade.(lowered,phantom grill,C5 rear pan,custom interior,Alpine stereo
w/sub,etc) I bought the truck new so it's a known quality. Dale Mac has seen
it. Hate to part with it but I really want to build another Elky,,a serious
one this time.(even more than the 68)
Anyway,I can pay cash or trade

What year Elky are you looking for?  What shape, engine,

The 70 has been in the family for over 20 years.
It was purchased in 81, Dad had a chance to buy it from the second owner in 80,
but missed out , He fortunately got it from the third owner , (before the bed
was completely destroyed.)  It had the original engine and all. The big
block is now resting peacefully in Uncle's garage, until I can rebuild
it.For now it is sportin  a low compression big block . It has been in
my name for three years and in my driveway for six months. It is now my daily
driver. The 69 really uses to much fluid , oil tranny , super unlead. I had to
fix the broken exhaust spring in the 70 two months ago, and it has been
runnin fine since.

turned my 69 elcy back to orig . previous owner had a 4 speed in it and i
put a t 400 into it ,so answer to first question , yes get a diff drive
line.
get a new steering column , unless you want the column lever in the way .
we had to change out the pedals and such for the change be prepared for
that.
previous owner went through floor board for the 4 speed change ,( flinstone

My driveshaft is offset a bit left of center
when viewed from the back of the car. A driveline buddy of mine says this is
deliberate in order to make sure the driveshaft never arrives at zero degrees
of offset through the suspension travel. Could you guys please tell me if the
driveshafts in YOUR cars are offset at all? By offset I mean laterally. So if
you were looking at a "plan view" of the chassis (that is, a bird's eye view),
the driveshaft would be slightly left of center at the transmission tail shaft
so a slight angle would be present between the trans and the differential. Or
maybe the differential would be slightly offset.
BTW, this would NOT generally be evident in
assembly manual drawings, etc. You'd sure enough see it if the car was on a
hoist and viewed from the rear, however. This is important to me in my quest to debug my
driveshaft. Also, not all platforms has this offset - only those the engineers
determined could arrive at zero at some point in the travel of the suspension.
We're only talking about a 1/2 inch or an inch, by the way. Nothing dramatic
but you can see it readily.

motor and found #5 exhaust spring was broke, thankfully it did not drop.He built
the motor with good valve springs for the intake but took a short cut on the
exhaust (used ones ).Would a broke exhaust valve spring cause a lot of fouling
and cause the motor to run bad at idle?  There is no signs of water in the
oil .Any help or other places to check.thankx

1970 Chevelle SS big block with manual trans? I have a slight suspicion that

cuts out or bogs,  you know -  a loss of power.  It doesn't
seem like fuel, more like an ignition problem. Anyway sometimes there is an
  associated popping out the exhaust.

  Any thoughts from you all
?

Hey guys, hopefully I'll be remembered.  Josh from Ky that had
his car ruined by some punks.  I finally got all the bugs reworked out of
my computer and I changed my e-mail account.  Hotmail was driving me
nuts.  Anywho let me update you all on what I have done.  I am
finally ready to start driving the car again just got it back from the frame
shop and all I need to do is put the headlights and grill back on.  I
ended up buying another 66, couldn't pass it up.  It was cheap ($400), in
good shape, and if I didn't save it the moron was going to turn into a
dirttracker (aaaggghhh!).  Well its great to be back on the list
  talk to you all later.

Re: [Chevelle-List] I'm stumped

2002-07-27 Thread Doug Fugere

sometimes a guy can get his tranny together and put it on the motor, and the
torque converter can look like it is in all the way, if you can get your
fingers behind the torque converter , it is not in all the way. This might
be off but hey double check that the torque converter is in all the way .
Your fingers should not be able to get behind it.

I've got shifter problems on my ragtop
& am looking for suggestions.  The car was a column shift power glide
& is now a 400TH with the column shift.  I drove home the other
night, pulled in the garage & couldn't get the shifter to move above
drive.  I was able to hold the car & get a block behind the
  wheel.
Last night I jacked it up & disconnected the shift linkage from the
trans & was able to shift the trans through all the gears from
below.  The linkage all appears to be connected properly with nothing
binding.  So, apparently the problem is in the steering column.
Before I tear into this tilt column is there anything I should look for or
beware of?  I've torn down a couple of standard columns over the years
but have never been into a tilt unit.
      Advise & tips welcome.

Re: [Chevelle-List] LOUD mufflers

2002-05-21 Thread Doug Fugere

I have medium sound glasspacks on the elcy, thats what the muffler guy asked
, loud quiet or in between. .I chose in between , they sound great ,
especially when the wife is drivin away and i can hear it purr three blocks
away as she lead foots it , i always tease her about that.. Power loss i
have no clue , i stomp on the gas and it goes , usually leaving that car
behind me way behind .

Bench bleed the master cylinder, double
check brake lines , won't hurt. Also clean the face of the booster where the
master cylinder hooks up.

Well I hope that I can
drop my rebuilt 396 in next week.  I'm just getting that itch really
bad.  I have been cleaning and detailing the undercarriage as much as I
can,  and replacing what I need to, with the engine removed.

   The only bad part on
my 69 SS body is the trunk area, and it's not that bad.  I have some pin
holes in the far rear, near tail lights, of the floor pan.  I can't
afford right now to replace it.  I was wonder however, that it would be
great to at least coat under the rear floor with some POR-15 to help it
along.  I already did the interior area. My questions are how
hard is it, for a first timer, to remove the gas tank to coat this area? That
  is involved?
   I also have a leak
where the Master Cylinder and booster connect.  I guess the Master
Cylinder is bad.  I just purchased a rebuilt one.
  If I
disconnect the break lines and replace the Master Cylinder, can I get by
  without bleeding the brake lines?

My 71 looked like a pretty good specimen when I first saw it
except it sat at least an inch and a half lower on the drivers side. The guy
who owned it wasn't home when I got there to see the car. His wife let me look
it over until he got home. I crawled around underneath it in the rain to see
if I could see any signs of frame damage. I couldn't see anything. While I was
under the car he got home. He bent down and said, "I'm the reason the car
leans." I crawled out from under the car to meet a very large, 6' 6", 400
pound guy who drove the car for about 4 years.
I put new springs all around and the car sits nice and level.

May be bad body bushings (collapsed)  or the springs may not be
seated.  If I had to venture a guess I'd say that the 30 year old rubber
bushings have died of old age.   There are about 4-6 bushings on
each side (between frame & body) check them all.
