Re: [Chevelle-list] Cross Country Purchase
Dan, I had a proffesional inspector look at a Camaro I was interested in a while back because I did not have the time to make the 6 hr drive. I am so glad I did. For less than $200, I got a full and thoroug inspection. Many, many things that the owner or pictures did not reveal. That saved me $1000's in the long run.

[Chevelle-list] Automotive Lift
The side walls are 16', so height is not an issue. Jerry, I live in NW MO. I am also planning on radiant floor heat, so anything you have learned, I would appreciate. What is the fuel source for your boiler ? My options for fuel are propane, waste oil, and a corn burning furnace. Thanks, Jerry, Eric John Hi Larry... I built a new garage a few years ago and installed a Back Yard Buddy four post lift. Lift is great, works well. You will need 11' - 12 ceiling clearance. Not sure if I would do a four post again. Might have more flexibility with a two post. Don't know where you live but I live in cold country so I installed in floor heat driven by a boiler system and that is great for the winter. Can keep the temp at 55-60 and it is comfortable. Good luck, Jerry Wells Build your building with 12' walls. My dad's garage has 10' walls and you cannot take his four post lift all the way up (with a vehicle on it.) Eric My friend Jack put in a two-post and it works great. I've had my El Camino on it many times. I don't remember what brand it is. If you want something that doesn't take up space while you're not using it, try leaving the car on the lift! I gave Tom Rightler a catalog You may also want to look at waste oil heaters, especially if it's going to be an unattached building. The heaters are not cheap but the fuel is free.

I am in the planning stages of building a shop for my farm and hopefully to do some work on classic cars too. I am considering different options for a lift. [Chevelle-list] 5.7 L Hemi
For anyone out there that may happen to have a 5.7L Dodge hemi, there is a problem with the valve springs. My '04 with 80K miles swallowed a valve as a result of the valve spring breaking. If you are driving hemi of or near this vintage I would suggest having the valve springs upgraded. FYI

[Chevelle-list] Big Block upgrade ?
Hi Kids I am considering upgrading the stock SB 350 engine in my '71 Chevelle for a built crate motor ? I am leaning to bigger cubes like a 454. I would prefer a low end torque driver for weekend cruising. I have only glanced at the Summit and Jegs websites to this point. Is EFI a viable option ? Does anyone have a preference as far as brands ? Blueprint, World, GM, etc. ? Larry Hickman
Re: [Chevelle-list] Sail Panels
I had my'71done by a professional, andthe sail panelsare coming loose anyhow. I wonder if GM used some sort of "miracle" adhesive back in the day ? BTW, good looking engine, Dan ! Larry I had some left over from the restoration that I performed on my Chevelle - they were original and looked a little used. I cleaned them up as well as I could but they just didn't look right so I got new material and tried to glue that on usung the 77 spray adhesive. I had to cut the darts as well to get it to form smoothly around the edges, etc. After one summer - they started to bubble a little, I ordered pre-done ones and those are in now - they are starting to bubble as well. I'll have to try something new. I think I'll have them recovered by a professional interior/trim business - maybe a thicker backer board will work. Bob, 71Chevelle SS Sbbut will be a 454 soon. Considering mine is far from original and I prefer a 69 or 70 style, the 70 would be the easy fix! The question is how much will the conversion cost. I’m dropping in a blown 468 in the car so it should move along.

Re: [Chevelle-list] ever thought of trading your Chevelle
Jim I am curious what those other one or two cars would be. The Chevelle I have now is not my dream car, but I do like the way it turned out and don't plan on selling it. I am just going to have to wait to buy another until I have more storage. I would love to find a first generation, convertible Camaro and a big block '69 Vette. Larry There's really only 1 or 2 cars I'd even half consider trading mine for, and if the opp came up I honestly don't know what I'd do. I love my Chevelle, it's just that I've had it for over 10 years now, so every now and again I get the temporary lapse of swapping it for something else. Thanks for the replies guys. She claims to have a standing offer of $8500, if true she should probably take it. Since it is not the convertible that I am really looking for (for my wife) I think I will probably pass on this one because I think she will laugh at my offer. Either that or I will save my money and buy a 2010 Camaro that gets better mileage and performance both. Did anyone happen to read the article about the guy who bought the '70 Challenger new (and kept) when he was in the service and bought a new '08 Challenger that was in October Hemmings Muscle Machines ? His comparison of the 2 cars makes a pretty good argument for buying a new Camaro instead of putting $20 - $25K in an old one. It seemed like an economical alternative to rebuilding the one I had. Long story short, it failed about 30 days out of warranty. When we took it apart to see why, it had been over-bored and sleeved. Who sleeves a small block gas engine ?!! Just wondering if there is a reliable mass-production engine builder/rebuilder, performance or stock, out there ? Re: [Chevelle-list] Crate Engines
Chuck It was your unfortunate experience that prompted my to tell my tale. Surely someone has had a good experience, otherwise, how would these guys stay in business ? Good luck with your new built engine. Thanks. After 30 miles the rocker arm studs started pulling out around #4. Engine sent back to them for inspection, and they said there was nothing wrong with it and if I did not want it back they were going to reassemble it and sell it to the next person that ordered that particular engine. I told them to keep it. Guess they screwed up and it didnt last until the warranty ran out. So, you hold the needle valve in while pumping the brakes and attempting the bleeding process all at the same time ??? [Chevelle-list] Proportioning Valve Problems
Hey Guys I did a front power disk brake conversion on my '71 Chevelle. Everything fit together very well and looks as it should. My problem is I can't bleed the rear brakes. I can crack the brake lines ahead of the wheel cylinders, and get fluid when the pedal is pumped, but can not get any air or fluid out of the bleeders on either rear wheel cylinder. I have completely removed the bleeder valves to look for an obstruction of some sort, and they are clear. The visible portion of the needle valve on the proportioning valve block does extend slightly when the brakes are activated, but it only moves about a 1/16th of an inch. Is this the way they are supposed to work ? The kit came with a new proportioning valve for front disk/rear drum brakes that is supposed to be correct for all GM A bodies of this era. I suspect this to be the problem, but don't know how to test it. Any ideas ? I am stumped. - Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.

[Chevelle-list] Wiper assembly
Does anyone know what the windshield wiper assembly where the splined stub shafts are mounted in in some type of pot metal are called ? On my ' 71, the little pin that allows part of the linkage to pivot is broke. I don't have a parts book, and have not been able to find one in aftermarket books. Kinda hard to call around to salvage yards if you don't know what the thing is called. Thanks. Although I think your cam choice would work, I believe it's at the far end of what I would put in a daily driver street car. It really depends on what you want. Do you want a car to show off? Is a lumpy idle is more important than practicality? If that's what you want, then I think it's a good choice. Do you want more practicality and drivability? I can only imagine what you pay for gas where you are. Let's face it, a big block isn't going to get very good gas mileage by today's standards anyway, but is economy important to you? If it is, go a little smaller. If you are building a daily driver then my philosophy is this; less is more when it comes to cams. A lumpy idle is cool but a smaller cam will give you more power where you can use it...in the lower to mid-range. Even in drag racing less can be more. I have a 3600 pound 71 that runs 11.50s with a Crane 224/236 @ .050 hydraulic roller in a 461 (.030 over 454). Most people don't believe that's all the cam I have in it. I think it works as good as it does because it gives me the bottom end power to get a heavy car moving. Staying within the Edelbrock line, I would recommend this cam for your application: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=EDL%2D5062autoview=sku Bill Vander Werf - Original Message - From: Pelle Andersson To: chevelle-list@chevelles.net Sent: Friday, February 08, 2008 6:41 AM Subject: [Chevelle-list] Cam choice? He wasn't breathing, he wasn't moving, she said. His body was in pieces. Prince George's County Police Cpl. How was he to know people were standing in the middle of the road looking the other way. There are no street lights or traffic signal there. You are more or less in the country side. Re: [Chevelle-list] Chevelle-list Digest, Vol 54, Issue 28
I am new to the list and have a question about the wiper assembly on '70 - '72 Chevelles. In all of the web sites and parts books that I have looked at to date, I don't see replacements for the shafts and housing (don't know what they are called) that the wiper blades are mounted to. Does anyone know what these pieces are called ?
