  carb?

Hi all, today I was out driving the 63, and it
started feeling like it had no power, bogging out and stuff, until it finally
died on the side of the road.
I had the wife bring me starting fluid, at which
point it ran until the fluid dissipated. I took the line off the carb, removed
the filter from the carb, and cranked the motor, no fuel shot out.

So I sent her to get some gas, and dumped 5
gallons into the car (dunno the status of the gauge, it was reading half, and
  it seemed to work before)
Shot it with the starting fluid, and it cranked
  right over.
I drove it for about 2 minutes, then it did it
again. Got out, sprayed the fluid, and started it up, I'd go to rev it
  up, it would die.
Finally, it started back up, and ran the 35
seconds it took to get to my driveway.
Also, there's a strange "knocking" noise from the
motor that wasn't there before, not as loud as a rod knock, but not as quiet
as a lifter tick. I don't know if this is coincidental or
  not.
  Any ideas?

  Thank you.

  Well guys,

After school today, I removed the fuel pump from
the motor, then took off the back plate so I could inspect the push
  rod.

Everything with the pushrod looked good, and I
stuck it in the hole and had the wife crank the motor while I pushed on it
with my finger. It moved back and forth following the cam lobe, about
1/2 of an inch. Does this seem correct?

While I was at it, I blew air through the "tank
to pump" line, until I heard air bubbling in the gas tank. So I'm assuming
that line is free of obstructions.

Looking back, it used to take only 3 or 4 pumps
of the pedal to get the car started, lately it has been taking 40-50 pumps,
after sitting for a few days, that is.

Also, nobody around here seems to stock the pump
that I need, in fact, the young kid at Auto Zone pulled it up on his computer
and then brought out an electric inline pump. When I pointed to the box,
and told him mine looked like the mechanical pump pictured, he said, "let me
ask this guy" referring to a co-worker, who's response was, "I think that's an
  EGR valve"

So I'm going to NAPA tomorrow in hopes of them
having one, if they don't, I'll be on my way to Summit Racing for the Holley
  pump.

Since there's no chance of freeze damage,I would cut the antifreeze ratio
way back and run more water. Even better would be 100% distilled water
with
a bottle or two of Redline WaterWetter. If your car isn't all
original,chuck

the engine-driven fan and install a Lincoln Mark VIII electric fan set-up.
They practically fall on a Chevelle radiator and at 5,000cfm,will cool
just

about anything.

Krister, I would seriously consider a pusher electric fan and run it
anytime you run your A/C. 220 is not awful but it is bordering on too
hot. A pusher should pull that temp down at least ten degrees which
would be good for your engine and make the A/C more efficient. Also try
not to ever shut down a hot engine as the temp will just climb. I
believe the boiling point for 50/50 coolant is around 240. There are
other factors. It sounds like your system is doing what it should for
what you have. That additional fan will make everything much happier.

 Drove our '66 SS 396 ( A/C ) in the local Parade again. Parade's
 seem to
test the cooling systems. I have a new stock water pump, new -
 recored 3
row Harrison and a seven blade fan. Water temp barley hit 220
 after 20
minutes at crawling speed. Right afterwards I was able to drive
 through a
few 45mph zones and it cooled down to 200 in a couple of miles - just
 needed some air.

What water temp do those of you with big blocks let it get to before
 shutting it down?

Re: [Chevelle-list] what size carb??

2005-06-29 Thread Matt Wettig

What kind of ignition system are
you running? I ask this because I had a similar problem with a car I had in the
past. I was running a 6AL6 box with a MSD distributor. When you would hit WOT
and the small block hit 4200rpm it would fall on its face. It was just like you
shut the key off. When you let off the gas it would take off again. Once it hit
4200 rpm it would do it again. It turns out that I didn't have a good enough
ground between the engine and frame. I bought a 1 inch wide stainless ground
strap and WHAAALLLA!
Problem solved. Not sure if this
applies in your case but it would sure be worth a try. My next questions would
be this. Are you running a stock fuel pump? Are you running the old original
fuel lines? Have you checked the filter? How old is the fuel line to the carb?
You could very well be running out of gas at WOT. Suggestions: Install a 3/8 SS
fuel line from the tank to the carb. Install either a HP mechanical fuel pump or
an electric fuel pump. Check fuel filter. Make sure you old fuel line is not
collapsing and install new fuel line to carb. Just my 2 cents.

your 67 looks like with that tires/rims combo. You have any pics on the web?
For that matter, anybody else on the list have pics on the web of 66/67
  Chevelles with non-stock tires/rims combinations?

  Thanks,

Like Clint said, making it handle better is really
easy. A good quality set of shocks will make a huge difference, as
will modern rubber. I have the Global West setup with really wide
(275/40/17 tires) and it is stiff and likely out-handles your old
3000GT. You could use the air bags to get an adjustable ride height
and find reasonable tires and some great shocks. Or, try it with the
current springs, Koni or Bilstein shocks, and see what you think. If
you don't plan to push the car really hard, then you can save a lot by
keeping the stock A-arms and brakes, and just using moderate tires/wheels
(maybe 16x8 with 245/50/16 tires?). If you like a lower stance, or low
profile tires, then that will dictate other choices. TireRack.com has
lots of tires specs where you can see the diameter of the tire and see if
this is close enough to what you want.

I have found that modern shocks make a huge
difference, with tires coming in next in importance, then everything
else.

Ultimately, what I'm looking to do is build a
safe, fun to drive car that handles somewhat better than what the car did
when originally produced. I don't expect it to handle the way my 3000GT
did when I owned one, but I'm hoping to put something together that
handles better than the "boats" I used to drive in the 70's. - without
  breaking the bank. Tall order?

This car will basically be a (sunny) weekend
  driver...

If you run the GW arms and QA1 coilover
front set-up,it will also be very firm. Prices aren't
cheap, either, around $1500 for the package. For that kind of money, you
could run Pole Position a-arms,Coil Spring Specialties springs, and some
Tokico or Koni shocks. You wouldn't have the adjustable ride height but
the car would handle just as well probably ride better. Another
option that would cost about the same as the GW arms/QA1 coilovers would
be Air Ride Shockwaves and StrongArm a-arms. Lots of ways to go for
different budgets. It all depends on what you plan to do with your
car.

  Hi
  everybody,

  Just
wanted to pass along some info. DII is now offering a "PQ" (premium quality)
line of Chevelle bumpers. I'll be adding them to my web site
(oldcarnetwork.com), hopefully as soon as today. These can be drop-shipped, so
there are never delays unless there is a national backorder (in which case it
would be hard to find them anywhere else either). Also, some of you may have
noticed that I have been dropping the small-dollar items like decals and
manuals, glovebox liners, hood insulation, door panel watershields, small
hardware items, etc. I also dropped certain suppliers for being slow to ship,
poor communication, too many backorders, and things like that. Many of the
items that are currently on clearance sale are being discontinued once they
are sold out. Hopefully things will be trimmed down and flowing more nicely
over the next couple of months.

  Thanks,
  John

 Subject: [Chevelle-list] Exhaust System - LS 5

I am going to put a new exhaust system on my '70 LS5 and am
 considering
Flowmasters series 30 or a system by Pypes Performance Exhaust.

 Anybody have any
experience with the Pypes Performance company?

Anybody have any other thoughts for a powerful sounding system
 that won't
drive you nuts inside while crusing? I am open to all input.

 Thanks,

 Jerry Wells

Yes, there is a cup like bracket that goes inside of the spring and a
bolt the runs up the middle you can probably pick up a set at Sloans in
CA... that's where I got mine.

Well I would trade it for a 68-72
posi 12 bolt if someone was interested. This one is a 331 posi and it is coded
for a 1966.

I would trade that rear for a 68-72 unit. Those
early rears are getting harder to find.

Or you could do what I did with the 66 rear in my 70,
weld the 68-72 brackets on it :-)Tom

I do like the flowmaster sound but my 4 side exit was attracted too
many cops. I switched to a stainless Borla kit from headers to bumper
http://www.personal.kent.edu/~wbainey/BORLA.htm The kit fit really
nice using factory mounting locations. Sound is good pretty quite at
idle.

[Chevelle-list] 66 Rearend in 70 Chevelle

2005-06-04 Thread Matt Wettig

Hey guys,
 I picked up a 66 12 bolt posi rear
for my 70 chevelle. I know the 66 rear is narrower than the 70. My question is
this. The mounting for the coil springs are different on the rear. What holds
the springs on the rear? The 66 has a flat plate with a hole in the middle. Is
there a bracket to hold the coil springs? Thanks in advance.

Matt
