Do any of the movies have a Chevelle in them?

Bullitt has a white 1968 El Camino in it (parked).

That's a crazy movie because there's a chase scene where the Charger
clearly crashed unexpectedly and you gotta love the way McQueen
suddenly decides to wipe out the front end of his Mustang after the
bad guys crash.

Of course "Repo Man" is the quintessential Chevelle cult movie.

[Chevelle-list] Window Trim

Got a easy question for you guys..any idea where I could track down the
chrome trim that screws into the outer edge of the door opening, it holds

seem to track them down. Would really like to wash the car but need the
windows to seal up. Thanks for your help in advance. -RJ

Folks-

I have heard both sides of this question – so I send it to the collective
for some opinions.

I have my car stripped in order to pull the body off the frame this
Wednesday. There is zero interior (aside from the dash), no wiring,
firewall is stripped, A/C is removed, basically I have a steel shell. I do,
however, still have the glass in the car, and the doors mounted. I do not
plan to remove the glass – so do I have to remove the doors before I yank
the body off the frame? If it makes sense, I will do it. If it does not
matter – they are staying on the car.

The method used will be an engine hoist (cherry picker) with chains
connected to the access holes for front body mounts (bottom right and left
of firewall), and also lifted from the two holes in the trunk that feed the
wiring down behind the bumper. Again, chains fed through the wiring holes,
through a 2x4 with 1 ¼” hole, bolted through (like the guy on
72chevelle.com).

Thoughts?

Re: [Chevelle-list] Vacuum Canister

2007-04-13 Thread RJ Winkler
No, that's right. Without vacuum it takes a ton of leg power to get the car
to break, especially if you're in stop and go traffic and repeatedly push on
the pedal. If the brake pedal is going to the floor then you have air in
the lines or a leak. If its just easier to push down and doesn't go to the
floor then the booster sounds like its doing its job. -RJ

enough vacuum means not enough power assist from the booster.

A member of mine is
having problems with his starter??  You guys have any suggestions??
Here's his story

Morning guys (or gals,
depending on who opens this email),

I’m having trouble
with the starter on the Chevelle. Last night I went to start the car it
wouldn’t start. Turn the key and nothing. No click, no nothing. Everything else
works, headlights, radio, interior light, etc. I was able to jump start the car
by coasting and letting the clutch out. It took me about twenty-five minutes to
get home. I turned the car off once in the garage, then tried starting the car
again. The car started without hesitation. This is typical when ever I
experience this problem. This might happen twice in a week or it may happen
once every couple months. The only consistency is it never seems to happen in
cool weather.

I’m considering the
following items next,

- by passing the
neutral safety switch.

- installing a new
ignition switch.

A little history,

This started around
three years ago. At that time I had a rebuilt GM high torque starter. I
installed a reduction starter from Jeg’s about six weeks ago giving into the
heat soak theory with the stock starter and headers. I considered changing the
battery cable along with the starter but it looked in perfect shape, no damage
or corrosion.

Any ideas or
suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Donnie

Re: [Chevelle-list] was it the heat?

2006-06-17 Thread RJ Winkler
Don't think it will be the timing...if it just clicked its an electrical
problem, usually due to a low battery or dead starter but since your starter
kicked over sounds like the battery. Did you check the volts before or
after you got the car running? The battery will show plenty of charge when
it runs but it might lose it once the car is shut off for a little while.
Sounds like you have a defective battery but the best way to find out is
just check it in the morning or something before you start her up. -rj

Having your timing too far advanced can cause hot start problems. I would
also have the battery load tested. Most places will do that for free.

Today I pulled the '66 out to take to the local Cruise
Night at Fox Run shopping ctr. She rode great all the
way to the gathering, started fine when coming home,
and made it home with zero issues. I shut it off to
take some stuff inside, and came back out about 20 min
later to start it and no luck. It just "clicked". As
soon as I hooked up jumper cables to her, she fired
right up, so when it was running I checked the battery
and it showed that it was at 13.8 volts, which I think
means plenty of charge is coming from the alternator.
The battery was new as of October 2005, the starter is
a protorque ceramic starter, and this is the first day
in a looong time that I've ever had a starting
problem. So I must ask, was it just b/c of the heat
today (was around 94 here)?

Or, should more than 13.8 volts be showing when the
car is running? I know the heat affects batteries as
well as engines, so I'm hoping that was the case. Or
is it maybe a crappy battery a bit early? It's a
DEKKA, always thought they were pretty good.

Thanks as always,

Jim

Mount Question

When I installed my big block, I had to buy a set up upper
engine mounts. I bought a big block set, then discovered that the ones I got
did not couple correctly with the chassis mounts. The upper mounts were too
big. I tool one of the chassis mounts off and took it to a local parts store.
We discovered the engine mounts that fit my chassis mount was identified to fit
a 327. I guess the previous owner must have installed a small block at one time
or another. Remembering a thread on the list where people said both will work,
except the engine would sit a bit lower with the small block mounts, I bought a
set of small block engine mounts and installed the engine.

I have since discovered  I need the engine to sit 1/2
to 1 inch higher to address my header clearance issues. I'm assuming if you set
the SB and BB chassis mounts down side by side, the "hump" where the
engine mount couples with the chassis mount would be larger and taller, raising
the engine a bit?

I appreciate your comments,

RE: [Chevelle-list] assistance with project for school

I’m looking to be an automotive

co-ops with the big three, and job opportunities when you’ve graduated? Thanks
for any information you can give me.  I’ve been looking and reading
everything and feel like I’ve gone nowhere.

anybody on the list was an automotive engineer. I would just like to ask them

[Chevelle-list] TH400 and Driveshaft

Quick questions all,

Does anyone know how long is the tailshaft on a

all the drivetrain pieces done before I put the body back on and send it to
paint. Thanks ahead of time –RJ Winkler

RE: [Chevelle-list] Stupid question?

2005-08-04 Thread RJ Winkler

Technically,

    It has kinetic and potential
energy.  Kinetic is basically movement, and since the flywheel is spinning it
has kinetic energy.  But the basic way to measure potential energy is height
off the ground where gravity can act on it.  Since the flywheel is above ground
level it has potential energy but since its spinning it has kinetic also.  Your
both right.  –RJ Winkler

Actually Ron,

It is kinetic energy. An example of stored energy would be the
spring in a wind up clock. As the clock releases the stored energy from the
spring by turning its hands, that would be an example of kinetic energy.

Shawn,

Nice explanation.  I just have one comment.  It is actually
potential energy that is stored in the flywheel.

Pelle,
The best way I know to explain it is a flexplate is used with an
automatic transmission and is usually lighter and thinner. Its basic
role is to give a place to use the starter on. Whereas the flywheel on
a manual transmission car is much heavier and actually stores kinetic
energy to help move the car during take-off.
I'm sure we'll get lots more (better) explanations than this though.

I think we all agree that no one should
sell a clone as a real SS and that everyone should build their cars how they
want them to be.  If your going to put some serious money into one of
these cars you should enjoy it and if it takes SS badges or options then put
them on.  No matter what type of Chevelle you have they turn heads on the

I agree with Clint.  I’m 58 and
I guess kind of from the old school, and what someone does to their car is
their own business and can or can not be appreciated by everyone for the work
done.  But what really tick’s me off is the guys that do it and
attempt or do pass them off as real SS’s.  I have a 70 Malibu, and to be honest
I am as proud of it as I would be if it was a SS.  I do have an SS hood
and tail pipe tips, but everything else is Malibu emblems, chrome, etc.  I even
took off the SS wheels that it came with and put on a set of American Racing
and no SS striping on the car.  I get all kinds of compliments on the car
and hope I can meet some of you guys someday on one of the road tours.

I just see it as the “SS” cars
had a lot of the better equipment.  I bought a Malibu because I don’t have the money
to purchase some rusted out real ss for double what I got mine for.  I’m
completing a frame off restoration for the car and it will be a SS when I’m
done.  Just to save myself incase I do have to sell it some day a clone
brings in more money than most malibus
so id rather put my money where it has a chance.  If someone trys to pull
there car off as a real ss and it’s a clone that’s dumb, but you
have to be dumber not to be able to spot it.  THeres nothing wrong with
people building these cars how they choose.  Id rather seen 20 clones then
1 rusted out Chevelle getting crushed at some junkyard.  Im 17.

Seriously, has the harness been spliced anywhere? Any
possibility some wires could be crossed in the harness
from a Bubba job (not yours, possibly someone elses)?

Or, maybe check where the harness connects to the
actual switch- Maybe some wires could be exposed and
making contact somehow, thus causing the early
turnover?

Just my 2 cents worth..

Is the ignition switch positioned
correctly?  I’ve seen this when the rod and the switch aren’t
aligned properly.  Like the switch is a bit too far down the steering
column so the rod always has it one position ahead (or something like that)

Why not use the oval port heads on the engine, now? With a
little freshening-up and a good valve job, they can easily support 350-400hp.
You certainly don't need rectangular port heads for a pure street car. If it
were my 396",all I would do is add a good dual plane intake like an
Edelbrock Performer RPM or Weiand Stealth,a good ignition system (Mallory makes
a nice new HEI for less than $160),a good hydraulic cam with around .500 lift
& 220 degrees duration at .050,and some decent headers/exhaust system. Keep
the stock Quadrajet carb and add a high-flow air filter. The stock rotating
assembly (crank, rods,& pistons) will work fine too for the power levels
you're looking at.

I built a 475 HP 454 for a grand total of $2500.  That
included buying the core and having it completly machined.  I used stock
oval port heads and ported & polished them.  I used TRW 2465 pistons
and a crane powermax cam 286/296 adv. duration with a lift of .534/.553.
I used a stock cast crank and stock rods, Edlebrock Performer RPM intake,
Holley 3310, and a stock HEI distributor.  It was plenty to make the car
run 12.72 in the 1/4 mile.

Are you talking about frame braces? Usually
find those on ebay or some classic junkyard.  One of the junkyards had a pair
here and gave me em.  -RJ

[Chevelle-list] 396 Block

2005-05-01 Thread RJ Winkler

Hey guys,

I recently picked up 2 396 blocks to go have
checked out at a machine shop.  They both are 3999290 castings with suffix
codes CTB.  Works out to be a 1972 402 in a Chevelle, impala, or one other I cant
remember.  Anyway, I was wonder what your thoughts might be on whether or not
its worth buying one of them.  I’ve heard blocks after 1970 or 71 have a
lower level of nickel and crack easier?  Is it worth having the machine work
done to one and build up an engine with it or should I look for an earlier
block?  Thanks –RJ

Chevelles never had rear disc brakes.  They were only available on

Hey guys,

with spring and shock wise?  I have a set of pretty big tires, they rub on any
bump in the road, and I’m going to have to go smaller so I don’t damage
the quarters but I don’t want to loose the height in the back.  Any advice

Hey guys,

Quick question…Does anyone know about upcoming
swap meets or where I could find information on them in Ohio?  I’m starting to collected
unwanted parts and would really like to get rid of them or trade them for stuff
I need.  Right now I have an entire front suspension set up for a 69 chevelle. All
of it is in great condition, no cracks or bends.  The ball joints and bushings
would need replaced but all metal is intact.

 It includes    -steering
linkage

-sway bar

-drum brake set up
with original spindles and drums

-upper/lower
control arms

    Other parts:

    -front/rear springs

    -tail light housings

    -engine mounts (350,
396)

    -master cylinder (drum
brakes)

    -used dash

    -single upper rear
suspension control arm

Anything you guys want just email me or have any information
about the swap meets please let me know.  Thanks again –RJ Winkler

Hey guys,

Just wanted to know the going rate for a TH350
and a TH400 for a 69 chevelle and what years are interchangeable if not all.  I
have a TH350 that came with my car but to rebuild it seems to be more than what
a local junkyard is asking ($175) for a TH400 they just pulled from a Monte Carlo.  Would it be
better to switch transmissions now with plans to beef up my engine?  If I do
that do I go with the junkyard offer or do any of you happen to have an extra
400 sitting around that you want to sell?  Anyone want a th350?

Yes and no, depends on the year and
options involved.  For example, 1967 shows 25 different front springs for
Chevelles, 5 of those for 138xx (SS) cars; one each for hardtop and
convertible, different spring (but same for both) if either have A/C, and a different
spring yet for both if F40 equipped.  Many are listed for small block cars
with same options.   A standard 13817 (67 SS hardtop) spring coded
“AA” is also listed for 15 other non-SS Chevelles depending on
series/model/suspension/and options.

Granted most aftermarket companies like
Moog, TRW, etc. pare these down to just a few sets.  What year are you
working on and what equipment (e.g., AC or not) will it have when done?

One more thing, the numbers are stamped into the metal. Similar to
engine ID stampings by the head. The numbers are NOT cast into the

RE: [Chevelle-list] 69 Chevelle Malibu Frame Repair

2005-02-17 Thread RJ Winkler
Im in mason, ohio 45040. I just got a shop to check it out and they
estimated 400 to 500 bucks. Im almost positive I can find a frame or parts
car cheaper than that with a perfect frame that just needs to be cleaned up.

Where are you at? I'm just outside of Lex. KY, and have welded dozens of
frames over the years. I have a structural fab shop, but work on
cars/trucks/bikes on the side for enjoyment.

[Chevelle-list] 69 Chevelle Malibu Frame Repair

2005-02-17 Thread RJ Winkler

Hey guys,

Recently ive taken the body off my 69 chevelle
and found a crack in the front right rail on the bend upward toward the front
suspension.  Ive been looking for a few frame shopes but am wondering if its
alright to fix or would it be safer to find a new frame?  Thanks again –Ron
Winkler

[Chevelle-list] 1969 Chevelle Frame

2005-02-15 Thread RJ Winkler

Hey guys,

Quick question for anyone out there.  Is there
any difference between a 69 2dr/ht big block frame and a small block frame? I’ve
heard there are braces? Would they interfere with anything from my small block
69 malibu?
Would all my suspension just bolt on?  Even the small block springs? And does
it matter if I have a 10 bolt or 12 bolt?  Thanks –Ron Winkler

[Chevelle-list] 1969 Chevelle Malibu Wiring Harness

2005-02-06 Thread RJ Winkler

Hey Guys,

I recently purchased a 69 chevelle Malibu and am in the
process of restoring it.  One problem I ran into is the dash harness.  I can’t
get the lights to work. I’ve replaced the bulbs, fuses, and light
switch.  Still nothing.  If anyone has any other ideas or tips besides buying a
whole new harness for a fortune I’m open to anything.  Thanks, Ron Winkler
