RE: [Chevelle-list] Summit vs. Jeg's

I actually had forgotten something in an order over a year ago and Jegs
helped me out fine, but that was then.

Since we moved to Boise, I perfer Summit if for only that I get it a day,
sometimes two, sooner then Jegs.

Now I know why I prefer Summit over Jeg's...

A couple of times in the past when I placed internet orders from Summit, the
next morning I realized I forgot something. I'd call Summit, talk to the
customer service rep and ask if I can add the forgotten items. "No problem"
the rep would say, "what part numbers do you need to add?" Sure enough my
original order would arrive in one box along with a second box containing
the forgotten items with no extra "handling" charge.

Last night I ordered some stuff from Jeg's and sure enough I woke up this
morning and damn it if I didn't forget something. I called Jeg's a few
minutes ago and the rep says "Sorry, the box is already loaded on the truck
for shipping." I know it's my own fault for forgetting, but at least Summit
is willing to do something!

Clint,

Everything you said about my engine is correct
except I did go with hydraulic roller lifters and roller rockers. My motor man
told me to set redline at 6800rpm.

I had my dyno run today, and you are right. It did
make peak power at 6000rpm.

442hp @ 6000rpm
467fp @ 4250rpm

Just a point of interest, airflow was 720.3 scfm @
6250rpm, which is as high as they went. What does the "s" in front of the cfm
stand for?

You guys have to remember that Larry's car isn't
  running a hyd lifter,oval port big block but a solid lifter,forged piston,four
bolt main L78. Those things will easily rev to 7,000rpm and make their peak
power well over 6,000rpm. It can handle a higher flow exhaust. I suggested
2.5" tailpipes because the exhaust velocity is reduced enough that the extra
expense and more noise of 3" tailpipes isn't necessary on a BBC less than
427ci. The smaller tailpipes will help the low-end torque curve a noticeable
  amount and reduce the drone.
Very few streetable 400ci small blocks will have
cylinder heads that can flow like L78 BBC's.

I had 4.11's once behind a 4 speed and a 327 and hated driving the thing on
the highway. I'm not sure what the gears are in your PG but I'm not sure
it'd be any more enjoyable.

It all comes down to usage and what you want. If you want to drive it, I'd
go with a higher ratio.

OK folks,

I have the opportunity to use 3.73 or 4.56 gears in the 10-bolt posi I'm
going to put in the '66. The car has a 300+/-HP 327 and PG. Anyone have
any thoughts or previous experience with the 4.56 gears and the PG/small
block setup?

I drive the car to local shows, and want to be able to take it to Cecil on
occasion. A relative told me to do the 4.56s and nothing less, thus my
indecision.

Thanks,

Clint, the only problem I have with Baer's is that you can't be in a
hurry to get them. They take forever (ok, well 6-8 weeks, but crap, that's like
1/3rd of the summer!). Hell it took me that long just to get a catalog. They use
Road Catalog to sell their catalog ($5)...I bitched after 4 weeks and got 2
(one from Baer and one from RC). You'd think for that kind of money they get for
kits they'd want to get it out to you faster. The dealer locator on their
site is not accurate also. Listed my local AutoZone as an authorized dealer. You
should had heard that call when I was looking for the
rears..

I
also thought they could had done a little better on the install directions. A
little generic (the fronts were better then the rear). ...but there is no doubt
in their quality.

Be more specific about lack of support,Dan. I've
been dealing with Baer for many years and have had very few issues with them.
Baer's PBR calipers were used on late model Corvettes,Camaros, and Cobra
Mustangs. If you have a problem with them, your local auto parts dealer can take
care of you. Try that with Wilwood,SSBC,or others.
I don't have a problem with tall spindles that are
optimized for A-body cars. B-body spindles weren't made for A-body cars and
cause various problems like excessive bumpsteer, increased turn radius, etc. Do a
search on B-body spindles on Team Chevelle and look for postings by Dennis68. He
really knows his stuff about suspension set-ups.
With your car's combination, any particular reason
why you need an exotic suspension? Just curious.

Clint,

I have been in touch with Global West about using all their parts for a
complete front and rear suspension make over! It’s going to cost over $5000
for the top of the line fix(CAT 5) excluding labor.

There
has to be some work done on the 12 bolt. C clip eliminator installed and
special press on Ford bearing in the diff and some special axles. Something
about the 12 bolt not working correctly with the Wilwood 4 piston brakes!
Does this sound correct to you? I wish I would have known all this before I
rebuilt the 12 bolt!

I
will use the  taller spindles. They say it only lowers the car 1”,
which….I think I can live with that. I wouldn’t want to go lower! I am going
standard suspension, not coil overs. They seem to be a little negative about
the QA1 coil overs. They like the dual adj. Shocks, it’s their springs they
don’t like, although they substitute their own springs for QA1’s. They say
they are too soft!

What
did you pay for your air ride suspension? Any advice? Would I be better
going with a shockwave system? Cheaper?

Changing the plan radically could be harmful to the pocket!

Eddie, Others will likely disagree with some of my points but not the core
point. Define "Clearly" in your mind or on paper, whatever, the end result.
You see, if some day you plan to put an overdrive transmission in, maybe
not. If you can think your fortune may ever change and put a bigger motor
in, or if not. Just define the end result. As in my case, I did the mosser
thing with 373 eaton and 33 spline shafts. In my mind, I am set. I can put
500 horses in and it is already equiped with the T700.

So, sit down and dream a little and be practacle and make your mind up. One
more thing. I have found that when I ordered the housing with flanges for
93-later rear disc's that maigt have been a more expensive way to put the
disc's on. I think there are more kits available for the old style square
flange that on the newer style.

You wallet is you're only limitation.

Are you sure you are not describing the rear brake lights? Changing from a

rear brake lights switch may need adjusted to make the brake lights go

I paid quite a bit more for my GW arms back in 2003 than
what they are selling for now. Ever compared the competition side by side? I
have. The only other A-arms that are as heavily constructed as the GW units are
the new Strong Arms from Air Ride Technologies. Pole Position, Fatman
Fabrications, and others are flimsy in comparison. I'm very leery of oval track
parts on a heavier, pure street car and their solid bushings are
not something I want on my daily driver, either. You are right in that GW
stuff is expensive and will certainly get no argument from me on that point.
However, who makes an equivalent A-arm for less money? Having seen the damage
that a failed A-arm can do,I want parts that are strong enough to survive the
abuse a daily driven car will give them. Suspension and brake parts are not
places to scrimp,IMO.

I have tried to stay away from GW for one reason. Price. The price they
charge for their tubulars is close to twice of what they were charging a few
years ago. They are charging not  what their product is worth, but making
as much profits as the market will bear. As long as guys keep on buying from
GW, the price will stay high and maybe go higher. Others have proven they can
make and sell the arms cheaper,  and they appear to be just as good
  in quality, bushings not included.

While a few others also went up in price when they realized that guys
were paying the higher prices, it opened up the market for opportunity for
smaller outfits to come in and take a part of the market.

In my opinion, since they DID  charge a lot less in the recent past
for these, and raised prices drastically, I call that gouging for the sake of
gouging. I won't be one of the guys paying it to them. I'll go to the
competition first to help keep them in business.

I'd buy the circle track arms before I went to GW. But that's just me.
It's a free country, you can buy what you want and pay what you want, or make
  your own.

My garage project has been on hold for a while, but I finally have
footers dug .    My wife suggested that I install a
bathroom.   I was all for it til I got 3 bids that were way more
than  I could afford ( and more than I thought
reasonable).    Today I got 2 comparably reasonable
estimates ( is $2600 reasonable?) for a comode, utility sink and water &
sewer connections.

$2600 otherwise spent would get me a  4-post lift or LS1
for the camaro. I could improvise a sink install and
could live without the comode.   So for the long term is the bathroom
a good investment?

RE: [Chevelle-list] what paint for rear end?

2005-09-25 Thread Ron Sparks

That is what I came up
against with my Moser. IMO it should had been powder coated for the money, or at
least an option (maybe it was, but it wasn't an option give to me and I failed
to think about it until I opened the crate). I asked around and found that the
heat would be to much on the internals.

One thing to note... if you go the powder coat way you have to give
them a bare housing... the bushings and insides will never take the heat.
If it's already together... paint is the only way.  I have to do the same
to my rear... i plan to primer it and then paint it a gloss black can get
the paint from a local store... or eastwood.

I like the idea about using the cherry picker I was going to paint it
on stands... always end up scratching off some new paint...

Good luck!!

A second vote for Sea Foam.  The stuff works great at cleaning excess
carbon buildup.  I use it from the lawn mower to the daily drivers.
Comes in a white and red can at the local auto parts stores and costs about $5
IIRC.  Unplug your power brake booster hose at the booster and put it in
the can of Sea Foam while the engine is running.  The vacuum will suck up
the Sea Foam into the intake.  Let it take down around 1/3 can or so slowly
and then bury the hose into the can and the engine will sputter and die.
At this point, reconnect the power brake booster hose to the booster.  Let
it sit for around 1/2 hour then start her up.  If you have
carbon buildup you will be engulfed in a cloud of white smoke until it
burns off.  I always have a can in the garage right next to the can of PB
Blaster.

I need to buy some headers and a one piece oil pan gasket. My local speed

order. Summit and Jegs are the only ones that came to mind, and they are
both the same price. I could also order from someone else if people here
have ideas.

Also, any idea which gaskets are the best? Fel-Pro has been my choice for
engine kits and stuff, but I'm also open to recommendations if I should look
at someone else. I want the one piece for simplicity and leak resistance.

Yes they do look better...and they do perform. I would just like to see GM
step up and do something special with it. Look what our options are from
them for a V8, rear wheel car - a truck (have a '04 Tahoe), Corvette (a lot
of money), GTO, and a Cadillac CTS-V (I drove a friend's CTS-V and it
rocked, but again a lot of money).

My family will be in the market for a new ride sometime soon ('bout time to
get rid of the DeVille - the "old man car") and I'm just not seeing anything
on the GM side that fits the bill.

If you can afford a Moser or Currie 12 bolt, you can also afford one of their
bolt-in Ford 9" units. There's huge aftermarket support for the 9" and more
gear ratios & options are available. I'm running a Chris Alston Fab 9 rear
in my 69 Elky with Moser 31 spline axles,Detroit Locker diff,Motive Gear
4.11 gearset,and Baer 12" disc brakes.

RE: SV: [Chevelle-list] suggestions on a 12 bolt

2005-08-12 Thread Ron Sparks
Here are the specs I got on mine (Moser) for my '66: 33 spline axle, posi,
3.55 Richman pro gears, 1350 yoke. The 33 vs. the 30 is supposed to be
stronger, though I don't know if most of us will ever need to find out. I
also added their trick rear end cover. The whole thing set me back $2500 +
$225 shipping. More then I wanted to kick out, but in reality it is getting
harder to find them and you'd end up dumping a bunch of money into a used
unit to get up to par with this one.

You'd think for that kind of coin though they would at least powder coat
it

Note if going for the 1350 yoke you'll have to modify the drive shaft with
one. I wasn't worried about it since my tranny comes with a new one.

One company that Keisler recommended to me (I never did call them though)
was DTS (www.drivetrainspecialists.com). The guy at Keisler that sold me my
tranny was very high on them.

Mike has it right. I'm planning to install my Moser this weekend. Nothing
cheap about it - plus I got carried away as I was ordering...

Don't forget about the shipping either. Moser sends them with the shipping
COD. Had to warn the wife about that $225 bill before it was a surprise :-)

I guess maybe the best question to start in these situations is to ask, How
much money can you afford? I did the Mosser 12 bolt thing. Got the
differential and spline count I wanted with late model Chevrolet flanges. I
think the old style brake kits, if this is a consideration at the moment,
are cheaper than a junkyard or new 93-up rear disc setup. But really, it's
all about your fundage, as it were.

RE: [Chevelle-list] disc brake conversion

2005-07-24 Thread Ron Sparks

I
installed Baers on my '66 (fronts; waiting to get my rear set). Like Dale said
it was pretty straight forward since my kit also did not require the spindle
change out. That being said, I had to convert from a single
reservoir to Baer's dual, so I'm running new stainless lines throughout the
system (there is easier ways to go). The bad thing about Baers is cost and the
wait getting them (I was told 6-8 weeks on the rears that I ordered through
Detroit Speed...took about that long for the fronts last
year)

If I ever do it
again I'll probably look closer at the complete kits from SSB and MPB...but the
Baers' sure look sweet!

BTW - I would highly
recommend Pure Choice (http://www.performanceplumbing.com/)
for anyone doing lines. I saw something about them on Trucks! (project
Copperhead) and gave them a call. The service was outstanding and the hardware
first rate. They walk you through the system and send you everything you need.

Oh, and my other
recommendation of the day -a very cool flaring tool I got from Eastwood. They
are slow as hell when it comes to shipping, but I've never been disappointed.

I’d think the major
brands are pretty good swaps or they wouldn’t be in business long. Folks like
Stainless Steel Brakes (http://www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com/),
Master Power Brakes (http://www.mpbrakes.com/), Classic
Performance (http://www.classicperform.com/)
etc.  I can only speak from personal experience but I used Baer (http://www.baer.com/) front discs on my 67 and
the kit I used didn’t require disc brake spindles like some do.  I’m sure
there are others out there as well.

RE: [Chevelle-list] Master cylinder port assignment

2005-07-12 Thread Ron Sparks
I'm in the process of running the lines from my Baer master and it is just
as Brian states as far as the front being the back port, rear the front
port, and, the port size is larger in the rear. That being said, the Baer
instructions state that the port size my switch from application to
application, so they included adapters. The one thing they maintain is the
which line goes where (front to rear; rear to front).

Also note, that I'm putting an entirely new brake system on the car. The
original master was a single reservoir unit.

On factory style master cylinders, the smaller port is for the rear brakes,
the larger port is for the front brakes. Usually the smaller port is toward
the front of the car even though it operates the rear brakes. The size is
the main factor, larger for the front system, smaller for the rear.

www.keislerauto.com can set you up with
the conversion and tranny.

Converting over to a manual is really not that had. Did it on a '69
Pontiac and my '66. The '69 was a straight bolt on, the '66 required some slight
welding (though I probably could had drilled and tapped the frame for the
bracket that was welded).

Hi all.
New to the list.
My son has a 70 Chevelle and we want to convert it from a TH350 to a good 5
or 6 speed manual with overdrive so we can go to some decent gears like 373's in
the rear.  Any suggestions.  Are their any kits out there available
that include all the parts like bellhousing, pedals, clutch, pressure plate,
trans, etc.
Also, I was thinking a hydraulic clutch might be kinda slick to install as
we could use a nice strong pressure plate without bending clutch linkage or
requiring a linebacker's left leg to engage the clutch.  Is there anything
available out there.
Thanks.

Hi Folks,

I am once again in need of your expertise and advice, this time re:
carburetor selection and tuning. My car is a '68 Chevelle based 32 Ford
street rod, 454/th400 with 3:08 rear. I estimate it weighs about 2800 lbs.

Pertinent engine vitals: flat top pistons, Edelbrock Performer RPM heads,
air gap intake, Comp Cams CB 280H-10 cam. The stall converter is 2200.

I am currently using a new out of the box Holley 750 dbl pumper carb. I have
tried a Speed Demon 750 vacum secondary. Both have resulted in lackluster
performance. There is no bog, they just don't have any punch. My comparison
is the carb I was using (never should have sold it!), an older Holley 750
dbl pumper. That thing used to run like a beast! I replaced it with the
Demon because it just looked grungy, I got sucked into how pretty the demons
looked, and I wanted to "clean up" the engine. I then replaced the Demon
with the Holley thinking I should have stuck with mechanical secondaries
like worked well before.
This resulted in the same lackluster performance. I made the mistake of
breaking the rule "If it ain't broke don't fix it!".

I am at a point where I just don't know what to do. Is a 750 big enough for
this engine? Should I start playing with the main jets? I don't know what's
in there now, but I recall the old one had #72/#70 for primary/secondary.

I don't have any experience with carb innards. Should I look for a
trustworthy carb expert/shop?

Thanks for your help,

Fred Dowaliby

While restoring a "true" SS with repoduction parts imported from Asia (or

I am 40, own a numbers '66 SS and wanted the real thing. Personally there's
satisfaction knowing it's real, it has survived, it's not a copy, agree that
clones are a dime a dozen and satisfaction comes by being able to tell
someone it's real and not a "look alike". I also agree with "it's your car,
money, time etc. do what ever you want" philosophy. However, clones being
misrepresented are the real issue and it goes along with the fake document's
etc that are produced. If its a clone, show it and sell it as a clone. It
absolutely gets me when is see out right misrepresentation.

A true US built SS is in the VIN from '64 - '68 and yes there are measures
even here to make sure things have not been tampered with on any year.
After '68 the SS was on option and can only be proven with an original build
sheet, original invoice or protector plate (exception in '72 the VIN had
engine size and 454 was available only on for an SS). Adding all the SS
options to a regular Malibu doesn't make it an SS - basic question comes
down to "what was it when it left the factory - not what it looks like
today. Lets enjoy our cars and keep the hobby honest.

Just checking out eBay for stuff I need for my 69 and ran across someone
selling build sheets! It is not bad enogh that everyone and their brother
is building clones, but this should be against the law. They will even
''age'' it for you.

2005-06-07 Thread Ron Sparks

I'm in the camp that if you want to do ANYTIHNG with your car, it's your
business. This is the way I look at it:

1) It's my car
2) It's my money
3) It's my time

Those that have a
greater then thee attitude about original cars, all I can say is they
get the money for them when they sell, and there is a big difference.
So what's the diff? Just relax...

Now, trying to pass
it off with a bogus build sheet is crap, if not out right fraud.

Oh, and my car? The
guy that sold it to me claimed it to be an SS, but it had no documentation
and a Washington state vin on the door jam. Is it an SS? I doubt it, and I never
refer to it as such. To be honest all I was looking for was a clean,
straight car and I liked the way it looks with the SS trim
(especially the hood). I don't know if I would had gone to the trouble to add
it all if it was not already there. Oh and I'd didn't offer or pay SS money
for it either.

Besides Baer brakes,
a Tremec 5 speed and a 454 wasn't on the option list in '66 :-)  I
know what I want my '66 to be. Not a clone, certainly not "original" in the
sense that the diehards think of, but original as in one of a
kind, built from what my vision thinks it
should be.

Might come a day
when we wished we'd see more Chevelles on the road, regardless of what's been
done to them. Enjoy the rides, guys - that's all what it's really all
about...

Long Live

I just see it as the

have the money to purchase some rusted out real ss for double what I got mine

SS when I’m done.  Just to save myself incase I do have to sell it some day
a clone brings in more money than most malibus so id rather put my money where it has
a chance.  If someone trys to pull there car off as a real ss and it’s a
clone that’s dumb, but you have to be dumber not to be able to spot it.
THeres nothing wrong with people building these cars how they choose.
Id rather seen 20 clones then 1 rusted out Chevelle getting crushed at

This is why I think
guys, especially ones newer to classic cars, are silly for trying to buy
original numbers matching cars.  What exactly are you paying for when it
can be duplicated and faked and be indistinguishable from a ‘real’ SS?
What defines a ‘real’ SS anyway?  One that has all the correct SS options,
or only one that left the factory that way?

What makes a ’70
SS454, all original, worth so much more than a ’70 Malibu with a
454/TH400/12-bolt posi ?  If you’re buying and selling these cars to make
money, I have no pity for them getting taken on cloned SS.

With that said, when I
finally re-do the body and paintwork on my ’70 Malibu, I’ll probably add SS
stripes, Cowl hood, the rear bumper insert and paint my grill black with the
stainless trim, although I probably will keep my idiot-light dash.  With my
EFI small block and Hotchkis suspension, no one will mistake it for a ‘real’ SS,
but it’ll run circles around any ‘real’ SS.  I’ll build my car the way I
choose, much like Clint said.  I’m 32.

I
think you're right on the sagging. With one side done, you can push down on the

All else being equal, the Hotchkis springs would
lower the car. But,your original springs have sagged some which cancelled out
the drop.
You have a couple ways to go here to
lower that 66. Either install the Fat Man tall spindles which will lower the car
around 1 7/8" or have Coil Spring Specialties build you a pair of 2" lowering

It should go without saying but the Baer brake

Stock height or lowered? You need to install both sides and drive the car some
to let it settle a little bit. Remember that your old springs have most likely
sagged and if you installed stock height new springs, the car will probably sit
higher than with the old units.
If it were my car,I would pass on the B-body
spindle change. Order some Fat Man Fab taller A-body
  spindles,instead.
No,the Baer brake kit you have will not fit
  B-body spindles.

I just installed
new a new spring and Baer disc on one side (driver) of my '66, but I'm not
getting the drop I was expecting. I've got a big block (iron
heads)  so I ordered the big block springs. The Baer kit was a
bolt on to the factory drum spindals. It measures 15 1/2 inches from the
floor to the bottom of the front bumper (the hood is off, but it shouldn't
matter that much). Maybe it will drop a bit more once I get the other side done, but I
doubt it.

Should/can I
swap to B body (or aftermarket) spindals? Does anyone know if my
baers will bolt on ok? Or should I cut the springs or order the ones for the
bb with aluminum heads (though long term I plan on getting a set of new
heads)?

yeah I new that the brakes won't effect hight - and I
was afraid that they wouldn't fit B-Body spindles..

The springs are Hotchkis #1916F

"Lower your GM A-Body 1" Below stock
ride height to give it the right look, with an aggressive stance and a lower
center of gravity. Our springs provide a firm, but not harsh ride. Each gray
powder coated spring is precision wound using the highest quality steel. Specs:

I'll check out the Fat Man spindles.

It should go without saying but the Baer brake kit
has nothing to do with the ride height. Who made those front springs? Stock
height or lowered? You need to install both sides and drive the car some to let
it settle a little bit. Remember that your old springs have most likely sagged

It rubbed the steering on my '66. Not what I wanted to do, especially after
all the cost and then efforts to get them in without scratching anything.

What year are you running your dimpled headers on? I have coated Hookers on
my '69 396 with no dimples. The driver's side was no box of chocolates to
install, I can tell you that. The only clearance issue I had was that the
brake lines needed to be moved a 1/4" or so on the drivers side.

Just went out this morning for gas and some guy follows me all the way into
my driveway...

He liked the car so much he offered me a deal I just could not refuse...
especially as I just yesterday wrote the check out for the Insurance...(did
not mail it yet howeverlol) ..
Maybe he was into or sold drugs because he came back within an hourtest
drove the car..with me in the passengers seat.and gave me good old hard
cash.no checks just plain old cash...

An hour after he left I walked into the garage...No 68... WTF... discovered
I already miss the car. (shades of guilt ..I guess)... But then again I
can now begin a search for a replacement... which is kind of fun .. I HOPE

[Chevelle-list] Back on the list

2005-04-16 Thread Ron Sparks

Been a long time
since I last posted on the list (maybe last September?). Picked up the family
and moved from Denver to Boise. Anyways the bug is back and it's time to start
wrenching on the '66 again. Plus the new house has a FOUR car garage
:-)

My big purchase last
year was a set of 17" Budnik Fontanas (17x8 (4.5” BS) front and 17x9.5 (5.5” BS) back. Tires are Nitto
NT555 – P245/45ZR17 front and P275/40ZR17 back) and a Baer
disk setup for the front (got the brakes from Clint here on the list -
still have yet to install)...well this year the big one is going to be a Tremec
5 speed from Keisler. I broke the Muncie at the end of last summer. I ordered it
from Keisler about a week ago - bad thing is they told me it would be about 6-8
weeks, then another week for the drive shaft once I send them back the
measurements.

I'm starting to feel
like the car is coming to a crossroad. I know pretty much how I want it to be
when its' done, but the money! Since I put the Budniks on, the front end really
sits up. It always sat up some, but now it REALLY does, and it's a big
block car! So I figure I've got the next month or so to mess with it, maybe it's
time to work on the front end, put some new springs, shocks and the Baers
on. I also
want to replace the rear, add Baers back there and work do the suspension work
back there also. Money, money, money!

It's pretty much to
the point where pretty much everything I need (want) is big bucks and only can
be found new. I hardly see anything at swap meets any more that I have any
interest in. Chevelle parts of any year were pretty sparse at the last meet I
went to last weekend at Firebird Raceway here in Boise.

ok enough of my
ramblings...good to be back!

Dynomax Super Turbos are a good choice...is the rest of your exhaust system
already in place or are you building it from scratch? Dual 2-1/4" pipes
with an H or X-pipe crossover would be plenty for a 283.
