[Chevelle-list] Shops in AZ

2004-03-12 Thread Sean Martinez
I have just signed up on the list because I need the voice of epierience. I
was reciently hit in my restored 66 by a red light runner. it was bad but
could have been much worse if I hadn't have reacted the way I did. As it is
now I need a new front clip and since his insurance is paying, the best shop
and parts in Arizona. I'm currently looking at The Finsishing Touch in
Fountain Hills but if anyone knows anything about this let me know.

Also what is the best repo sheetmetal out there? Year One, OPGI

I'm sure glad I had it apprased and insured properly.

For all of you out there with regular insurance GET IT APPRAISED it wont
take much to make the insurance company total it. It was the best $80 I
spent on it.

Re: [Chevelle-List] photo op - your car in a magazine!

2002-05-30 Thread Sean Martinez

John,
I am now 18 but when I started my 66 I was 16. It was located on Team
Chevelle and me and my dad drove 600 miles to get it. It was a shell with a
ton of brand new parts. It took me about 20 mounths to get her driving but
it paid off. It is now my daily driver when I am at home in Arizona (I go to
school at Kettering University, formerly General Motors Institute). Me and
my friends LOVE to drive our cars, (69 skylark, 69 Dart, 67 4 door Chevy
II-being smallblocked and 4-speeded) I Race my 66 in anyway I can-except on
the street. Me and my dad did all of the work on it except for the vinyl top
and the headliner. I think this would make a great story (slightly biased).
Thanks for the concideration.

Craig,
I run 255/60/15 on an 8" ralley wheel (4" back spacing) and think that they
look very good. No problems what-so-ever with rubbing. I run 235/60/15 in

Re: [Chevelle-List] rear differential bushings

2002-04-20 Thread Sean Martinez

Dan,
I have had the bushings in about a year now. There is not any unreasonable
wear on them, they have some light scuffing but that is to be expected. You
CANT tighten the control arm mounting bolts down like with poly or rubber
bushings since it will bind. So I had to use nylon lock nuts to keep the
right torque (really light). I also greased them really well before
installing them, I think this is imparitive for the wear issue.

I have a set of B+B aluminum bushings in my 66. Surprisingly they were not
much harsher riding than the polyurithaine. I also recomend boxing the lower
control arms, BIG DIFFERENCE in the handeling and traction. it is just
welding a piece of 2x1/8 steel to the bottom of the arm. or you can buy the
kit from opg or muscle factory.

Does anyone know how to adjust the over-center adjustment on the power

allen; is it because it is a quick ratio box? All the steering gear is good
but the wheel has about an 1/8 of a rotation of play. Is that the over

I bought the aluminum headliner molding today,
he is very reasonable, ($10 for both sides) he has a two door and a more door.
I hope this helps. I hate to hear of people messing with your car. Good luck. He

street ontside the yard.He has a pontiac overhead cam streight 6 complete
sitting in a car, I have never even heard of it before. Most all of the cars
are get this, RUST FREE. An advantage of being in the desert. Charlie is a
crusty old man, drives a 65 black/black impala. Dont drive an import car to
his yard, he will raise the prices, he hates imports.
If you get a chance check it out. I dont have the number but just check in
the phone book.

Bob,
I live in Tucson but am in Michigan right now, Phoenix does have quite a few
cruze spots. They seem to be well attended with plenty of american muscle.
You might also concider heading to Tucson, it might be closer. I know that
there is cruzing every friday and saturday night on Speedway Bvld. you can
get there right from I-10, you cant miss all the cars. The only problem is
that the ricer movement is big in Tucson and if you even think of racing (it
is tempting to whack a few rice grinders) the cops are all over you. The is
occasional some good nights with american iron but expect to see a ton of
buzz bombs.
Maybe I will se you there, I will be back there the 24th and will be out a
ton since I have been without any 4 wheeled fun for three mounths.

You could try to get a hold of the stuff they use at the factory to hold the
under hood/trunk skin to the outter skin. Strong stuff it would fix it, that
is what its use is at the factory, to stop the two pieces from rattling. you
must be able to get some since it is burned away when a pannel is acid
dipped.

Michael,
it is stock suspension with some home modifications. I have a 1 3/8 front
sway bar, 1 1/4 rear. boxed rear control arms (including the uppers)
aluminum bushings on the lower (not amy harsher of a ride) polyurithane
uppers. the front has all polyurithane. It has the ever economical KYB gas
adjust shocks on all 4 corners. the tires are bfg radial t/a 235/60/15 front
and 255/60/15 rear. the car weighs 2700 with me in it. it has a 350 th400.
The turbo 400 is too big and i would rather push through the gears with a 5
or 6 speed but oh well it works. The motor is not running properly since it
only runs a 14.5 1/4. It was suposed to make 420 hp but i think the
compression is too low, 8.5 to 1 needs to be 10 to 1.
I would really like to see some more chevelles out on the autocross track
just for fun. where else can you run it and not worry about hitting stuff.
Hope this helps.

would happen in a total loss he told me they would cut a check for the
appraised ammount if I showed them the offical appraisal.
I dont know how others work or if i would ever get a check for the full
ammount but the appraisal is deffinatly a good idea. Super Chevy had an
artical on how to get an appraisal, it was about a year ago. So for those of

I would definatly recomend replacing the rubber and window felts. it makes
the whole car sound and look so fresh, combined with the fresh paint your
elky will look really good. I would also recomend removing the windows, if
it is the original windows the glue used to hold them in is probably old and
crusty (my frinds 67 nova almost lost the rear window because the glue dried
up and came loose) also with the glass gone you can paint the top of the
dash and fix any rust in the window channels. It is not too much work, it
beats having to mask the felts and rubber then deal with overspray.

Steve,
I put power locks in my 66, it wasnt hard but i did have to use some heavy
gauge rod to rin from the actuator to the latch. the solinoids can be bought
at a sterio/alarm shop. i have a viper alarm on mine (i live in the #1 city
for car theft) and am quite pleased, look at chevelles.com, they have a
whole tech discussion on alarms/theft deterants. i alwas am wowing people
with the poping of the locks, all my friends are jealous, hehe. if you just
want manual locks the alam will go off if the door opens on most vehicles.
my brothers truck (74 chevy) has a viper and manual locks, it works.

Herbert,
This is all true, I got my car with the kit already ordered, and completly
uninstalled, (the two existing wires were to the dome light) a big box of
wires and a single sheet of instructioins. I thought "Oh s__T!!!" i had
never done that kind of wiring. But i took a llok at it and just started it.
The fuse block got mounted, (the plus with this is that it can be mounted
anywhere, including the trunk, tell them if you are going to do that, and it
is kind of big but it is nice. the new style fuses, screw on terminals, and
the fuse block has all sorts of options) and i started working on the wiring
for the idnition. from there i did the rest of the car in the order on the
instructions. it only took about 4 days. if you have the stock harness you
can dismantle the connectors and put the new wires on them. same with the
light sockets. and a real plus with this kit is that the wires dont have
ends on them, thus you can route them how you please. the only wires you can
see in my resto-mod 66 is the ones going to the coil. it will not look stock
when you are done but it will work great and can acomidate all the
new-fangled amenities that are finding their way onto theses cars: power
windors, power door locks, sterios, electric seats, electric fuel pumps,
fans, a real heater/ac.. what you heard is right but it is a very
adaptible kit that has very good quality and is highly coustomizable.

Dave,
You can't run a non lockup converter but Hughes makes stall lockups. these
are great because they dont slip like a normal stall converter thus not too
bad of gas milage. but they are like $300. I have never worked on a 'glide
but the bolt is to adjust a band so it is probably similer.

I drove the '66 with the 283 from Tucson to LA, 500 miles. I blew the power
steering hose (earls braided stainless, replaced with crim on braided
teflon) I guess it didnt like 4000 rpm, a brand new pump and 7 hrs of
driving. got 18 miles per gallon with the 3.73s. it sounded so good at 4
grand and 80 mph across the desert. it ran like a top.

Darrell,
I have my 66 Chevelle in Tucson, my home, but I am in Michigan going to
General Motors Institute. When I was in Tucson i drove my 66 every day. It
got looks and every now and then pople would yell a compliment. I love to
beat on it every now and then, I drag race it at Southwestern International
Raceway and have even Autocrossed it. It did better than anyone expected. i
rack up about 1000 miles a mounth, but thats what they are for, driving.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Steering wheel swap?

John,
I think it will, you just have to make sure the columb and the steering
shaft are the same. In my assembly manual there are about 4 different
columbs. The best idea is to take the wheel off and compare the
shafts/columbs.

[Chevelle-List] auto trans id-ing

2001-11-28 Thread Sean Martinez

Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List

Be careful,
I built a what I thought was a 350c (lockup, it has a wiring harness) in a
305 '84 elky, but it was a 250c, I smoked it the first time out, oops. The
only way to tell is a what looks like an adjusting bolt on the passinger
side, if it has it it is a 250c. They are identical except for the valve
body and the forward clutches (the ones attaced to the pump) the 250c has a
band to take their place. The pans on all the 250c 350c 350, 375 (truck
applications) and all sorts of others is the same. Look for the harness
(drivers side, points to the ground) and the adjusting bolt. For more info
get the HP books turbohydramatic 350 book.
It is really good. Also there are not many kits out there for the 250c, I
pieced a few kits together and ordered some parts from Hughes Performance.

You can put the fan on the outside of the booth and have it blow in, it just
cant blow directly on the car or fresh paint.

I would have to agree, cosmeticly correct, i have to constantly field
questions about "wow is it really a 396" in my 66. It is to the point where
i have thought about removing all the 396's from the badges, just SS.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Paint Job Prices

Kelly,
your on the right track, I watched my neighbor paint his airplane, of all
things, in a 1x2 frame covered in plastic with a box fan taped to the wall
and a plastic vent with a heater filter to catch the overspray. He built the
thing for like $50 which is what I payed to have one day in a hole in the
wall paint booth. The painting process is long but rewarding so to whoever
wants to paint their car just remember that you can block it 10 times and
still find a flaw. It helps to know someone that can give pointers. I
painted my Chevelle for $900, it looks great to a lot of people but i still
find flaws and i sanded for 4 mounths. it might be worth it to pay someone
if you have the money.

I have to agree that the edelbrock is by far the best bolt on and run carb.
However, I was at the dragstrip and after bolting on a 390 cfm holley on my
283 (yes the nascar mandated one) i got five tenths out of it. It knocked
down 18 mpg on the highway and had unreal throttle response. Contrary to
popular belief it only became restrictive at 6,000. It was the best $10 i
could have spent on my car. And once i dialed it in it ran like a top. and
with the right model all holleys run like that, you might just have to play
with it. Call Holley and ask them which one is best.

Even after replacing the rubber on my '66 it still whistled, drove me nuts
because it shouldnt whistle. I then went to the hardware store and got some
1/8 foam stickey backed weatherstrip, the 1/4 wide stuff on a roll, it is
used to seal doors in a house. a year later i still haven't heard a peep out
of it.

David,
Try adjusting your kickdown cable, look in a manual or ask some one else
because i am not exactly sure about the adjustment. or if you go the rebuild
rout dont be intimidated, get the HP books book on the th350 and get a B+M
kit, they have the best instructions and have the options of street,
rv/heavy duty, or compitition, in reality it is a B+M trans in a kit.

Re: [Chevelle-List] auto transmission question

Kieth,
those tabs drive the front pump providing the pressure to the entire trans.
You should deffinatly not try to run it or you might also smoke the clutches
because there is no fresh fluid being pumped through. A replacement pump
might be in ored or a new pump gear. hope this helps.
