[Chevelle-list] heater control cable clips
List I'm trying to re-install my heater box on my 1970 LS6. I have somehow lost all the "clips" that hold the control cables in place. They look like tiny split washers and they may be know as a "spring clip". My assembly manual calls them "cable nuts" or "spl. nut". I have tried all the regular places like Ground up, year one and the local NAPA stores. Anybody have any suggestions as to where I can find these hard to locate parts? Re: [Chevelle-list] 70-72 cowl induction setup
John Are you talking about the little rod off the accerator that goes to an electrical switch? As you know, there are actually 2 separate systems here1 which is all vacummwhich when you stomp on the gas closes the flapper on the hood. There is a vacumm pod under the hood that goes to a ported outlet on your intake just behind the card. There is also a check valve in this hose too. The second system is the electrically activated flapper which is not seen because its inside and under the outside flapper that you do see. There is like a kick down switch above the gas pedal that when you stomp it it is electrically connected to a selonoid on the hood that opens the second flapper. Sorry John, I'm doing this all from my memory. When I get home tonite I can look to see if I can find what you are looking for. Bill C

Re: [Chevelle-list] LS6 Chevelle info
Thanks for the replies about LS6's. I've had mine since 72, but it's been off the road since the 80's. I started to do some work to it and it slid to the back of my garage while I worked on other projects. (it was the "keeper") Then you get married, have kids etc, but now I'm trying to bring her back to life. But last year a strike really stopped everything. But a new year is comming and so I'm hoping to get her back on the road this year. So when I see this LS6 for sale in Florida I had to ckeck it out. IIRC when you ordered a LS6 package, you could not get ANY other power options like air or power steering. And the disc brake was a manditory option when you ordered the LS6 option. So when I saw this car on ebay with air and the person was "pretty sure" it was an LS6, I had to re-check my memory because this probably wasn't an "as advertised" LS6. Thanks guys !! Bill C
[Chevelle-list] LS6 Chevelle info
Merry Christmas guys ! There is a "LS6 Chevelle" listed on ebay thats for sale in Florida. My memory is fading, but didn't GM sell LS6's without any power options (other that the manditory disc brakes) such as air and power steering? Or were there LS6's that came with air. I thought that the air option was only availible on LS5's and down. Curious minds (or is that a fading mind) are wondering. Thanks Bill C

Re: [Chevelle-list] front sheetmetal removal.
Dave Great idea !!! See, you can always lean something here. Bill C
Re: [Chevelle-list] front sheetmetal removal.
Andre I've taken the nose off a few times myself. The best way ( I think) is to keep it in one piece. here is a way to do it. 1). remove the hood. but mark or scribe around the hood hinges 1st. It will help line the hood up later. 1A). remove the radiator. 2). unbolt a bolt at the top rear of each fender. its in the cowl area. IIRC 3). there is also a bolt behind/under the hood hinge 4). there is 1 or 2 bolts at the bottom of the rear of the fender. these are the hardest due to rust. use lots of penetrating oil. 5). there is one body/bolt combo at the front of the fender by or next to the radiator support. 6). remove the wireing harness as it hooks to the firewall. Its like a 5/16 bolt. 7). check for wiper hoses and such before you pull 8). USE LOTS OF TAGS AND TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES! SAVE ALL SHIMS AND KEEP THEM WITH EACH BOLT OR FUTURE ALIGNMENT WILL BE A PITA. !! I would not remove the nose if there is a lot of rust and large holes in the lower rear fenders. You will only make thing worse. But once the nose is off, there is tons of room to work and clean everything up. hope this gets you goingI hope I didn't miss anything Bill C an assembly manual will show this better, but if you check it out, you'll be able to do it. Get a freind to help pull it off. It will come up a little, then forward and you tilt the rear up and over the wheels.

Diane I'm kinda big on originality..but I have a 70 LS6 SS that is red, so it's easy for me to say this. BUT OTOH, it is YOUR car and you should do to it what makes YOU happy :). You can put the 400 in it and make it really nice and who knowsmaybe alot of people do not like gulf green and you may be able to more with a different color. I believe the 1st thing people see in a car is the color; so I vote repaint her to what ever color you want. P.S. what color are you thinking of? Bill C

Re: [Chevelle-list] race track events
Ah, the joy of speed at a race track...what more could you ask for. That reminds me of a track event I was part of 20 years ago. The local Corvette club I belonged to was advertizing for an upcomming show. We were able to talk the local race track into letting us do some pace laps just before the big race. The track even let us park inside the gate in a roped off area right behind the start/finish line. We were to do 5 laps at a slow pace. But they didn't place a pacecar out there with us. So here we go all 25 of us in a double row. Lap 1 was at about 20 mph..by lap three we were really moving. By lap 4 I knew what "diving into the corner" meant. As we dove into turn 1 I glanced down at my speedo and saw about 90 mph. Then the track threw the yellow lights on and made us stop. One of the other guys said he hit 120 on straight. Needless to say we all had big grins on our faces all nite !!! The following weekend we went to a second racetrack, but they had heard what we did and they were VERY stern with us about speed. They had a pacecar and every track car and tow truck was on the track to keep us in line. We never got over 20 mph. :( Damn, no fun The need for speed continues Bill C 70 LS6 2002 LS1 vette
Re: [Chevelle-list] paint remover for fiberglass?
Jim I found a paint remover that works very good on corvettes. I've used this stuff quite a bit and compared to several paint removers I have used over the years.this is what to use. Captain Lee's Auto Spra'-Strip Paint remover You can order it by phone SPRA'-STRIP, inc at 800-421-9498 or 615-883-5707 The last time I ordered some, it came fairly quick. It is not overly strong, but gloves and glasses must be used. You do a small section at a time...say 2' by 2' and it will remove paint a coat at a time. It is then neutralized by water from a squirt bottle. I was at Corvettes at Carlisle and they sold a kit with 2 (1) gallon containers, scotch pads, squirt bottles and cheap gloves. I bought some heavy black (I think butyl gloves) It even works OK on undercoating. Hope this helps. Re: [Chevelle-list] Nascar at Kansas
Tom Get to the track EARLY Some tracks aren't too bad with traffic, but most are slow to enter. If the race is around 1pm, try to get to the track by 9am or earlier. Bring munchies and drinks cause you can wait in line to get in for 2 or 3 hours. I was at POCONO a few weeks ago it took about 2 hours to get in. When I left, I moved 10 feet in 2-1/2 hours..what I usually do is check out all the driver "stuff" trailers and/or eat before you leave 'cause you gotta wait anyway. I've been to several tracks, but not to Kansas yet, its a new track that is only about 2 years old. Where to sit is another question..people like to sit in different areas so its what you like which you can only get from 'speience as DW would say. I like to sit near the corners near the pit entry/exit.turn 4 to pit entry is goodlots of action. Same on the turn 1 pit exit. I like to sit higher up..then you can see more action and track. But every track is a little different and where to sit will depent on the track. I used to go to Pocono, Daytona and Dover alot, and I found good places to sit. I am now trying to go to 1 or 2 new tracks every year until I get them all. Last year I went to Lowes Motor Speedway for the Coca-Cola 600...great track and great seats !!!. and I got out pretty fast too. You should get your tickets NOW by calling the trackchecking the web. I think they are Kansas speedway.com. You can do a Google search or link from Nascar. I'd stay away from "Ticket" dealers as they get pricey. You should consider bying your tickets for NEXT year now. Same with hotels. Do not bring a big cooler eitherthey limit the size to about 4 cans only...no glass. I also try to go to a race that has several races in the weekendsome races are WC only, some are Busch only...some are WC and Buschand some will have WC, Busch and Trucks My favorite is Trucks... the crowds are MUCH smaller, its easy to get tickets right at the track, the tickets are cheaper and the racing is GREAT lots of "rubbing" with up and comming drivers plus a few old timers. List Having owned a LS6 for years, I always thought that if you ordered the LS6 option, that you could not get any other power users like a/c or power steering which would lower the 450 HP of the engine. Pelle Open up the exhaust with headers and larger pipes if you haven't done that yet. I think a 800 cfm DP is a little large750 might be a better choice. Then maybe a little bigger cam and then upgrade your ignition with a better distibutor, wires and/or a HEI. Just my thoughts.. Re: [Chevelle-List] offset A-arms?
Jim Yep, back in the 70's that was the rage. I did the same thing. I did work at a front end shop for awhile and when you "jack it up" you change the geometry and mess up the stock settings. If you get it really high, it's hard to get the settings where they should be. Looks cool, but it reduces handling (alot if it's lifted higher) and wears tires, suspension parts and raises your center of gravity (not good). I do not know if off-set a-arms would help or not, but if it's a good front end shop, he's probably right. He sounds like he can make minimum setting, so that maybe OK. The springs may also settle down a few 16ths after a few thousand miles which will help. Hope this helps. Re: [Chevelle-List] poly locks
Johm Yep, covers have drippers They are the original with drippers, no problem with them. Are we talking about the same thing? I know "poly locks" as a replacement to the nut that holds the rocker arms onthe ones I used were maybe 1 inch to 1-1/4 highand when installed, they were only like a 1/2 inch higher that the rocker arm itself. There was plenty of room. If you are talking about some that have a "girdle", then there may be interference. Re: [Chevelle-List] poly locks
John I installed them in 1973I dont remember what kind they were. When I get home tonite, I'll try to see if there is a name on them. PS.. the LS6 has been off road for several years now...I used to fix up cars and then sell them. One year the motor vehical department stopped me from selling any more cars until I got a "dealer" liscenseI was on my 6 car that year. I been holding on to the LS6 'cause I knew I didn't want to sell it. Now I'm finally getting around to getting the 'old girl running and maybe bring it to the Chevellabration in a year or two. Re: [Chevelle-List] clones?
hoss Jusy MY opinionI's your car, you do as you please !!! I prefer stock looking cars, but a nice modified one is just as nice. I have a 70 LS6 and i't virtually original.but I have an itch to pull and save the LS6 and put in a monster BB.some now advertise upwards of 700 ci..I also have a 69 and 02 vett and yes you will run into people who will "complain" if it ain't original. Do what you like, you gotta drive and live with YOUR car, and don't worry about the FEW critics.save all original stuff and HAVE FUN !!! Re: [Chevelle-List] '69 Malibu
Don Sitting in a field will probably mess up the frame, gas tank, gas and brake line, and brakes so check out the under side well. If you can get it on a lift all the better. Also there are/were mice there...check out the wires...under hood; under dash. I'm not trying to scare you away, but check her out good. There could be alot of work under the car. As for the 396...there ain't NOTHING like a BIG BLOCK save the 6 banger for later. Bill Ct

Re: [Chevelle-List] Rear Control Arm Bushings Question
When I did my 70 I took a chisel and gave a few good whacks in the middle which colapses the bushing and you can then pry it out. But I did have everything out and on the bench. If you jack up your rear end and support it, you can remove the lowers and sandblast and paint them up if you have a little time on your hands. But WATCH OUT !!! I suddenly decided everything needs painting cause ...while I'm there I might as well.next thing you know the rear is all out. I have a bad habbit of going nuts and I loose lots of driving time. If you think its a 2 hour job, I multiply by 4 and thats on a good day. Just thinking out loud.your experience may be different..depends on how nuts you are on cleaning and making it look good! Re: [Chevelle-List] Auto Movers -
Another possibility is to buy a trailer (as suggested) but sell it when you are done...maybe you only loose a few hundred dollarsbetter that several hundred to a tow company.although I bet if you do buy a trailer, you will probably NOT want to sell it. Re: [Chevelle-List] Frame question
Steve There are companies making frames for older Corvettes and another company making frames for 55-57 chevys and there are shurely other companies making frames. Check out modern hot rodders such as "Curries"...mayby you only need a "back half". Have you tries a Google search and checked out your latest chevy magazine? New corvette frames are about 3500 dollars or so; used are about half of that. I'd keep an eye out for what someone else pointed out...a west or mid west frame.
