I am not sure of their requirements but the labeling on the bottle states it
meets or exceeds requirements of both gasoline and diesel engines. I am not
involved with the actual bottling of the oils just the manufacture and blending
of different components in their full strength form before they are added to
the base oils that is then botled. Hope this helps.

also is this true?;; Diesel engine requirements are much different that
those of gasoline engines. The higher speeds and lower bearing
 surface-to-power
ratios of gasoline engines require oil with higher shear ratings than most
diesel oils. Diesels also have higher bearing clearances and that calls for
higher viscosity oils. The additional detergents required for soot control
actually reduce the effectiveness of added levels of ZDDP found in diesel
 oils.
Also, newer diesel oils beginning in 2007 have greatly reduced their content

Pete, I have to agree with Shawn that the MC is at fault here. I was going to
mention that there might be air in the line, but if the car was sitting for any
length of time then the air could have made it's way back up the line and into
the MC therefore bleeding themselves of any air. Even new MC's have been
known to fail. Like someone earlier said in this thread s**t happens
sometimes. They are machanical and they will fail. I'm glad for you that it
failed in your driveway and not on the highway which would increase the pucker

We just finished a home project and I asked my lovely wife Linda what she wanted to do next. Her response: "Let's go put in the push-pins". Not sureof her meaningI asked a couple of probing questions--like, what is the subject we're talking about? The '66. OK, what on the '66 needs push-pins? "You know, those long things that we had to do after you finished changing those springy things...". Oh, you mean the pushrods? Yep, that's it, the pushrods.
So, we're now off to put in push pins and rocker arms. Gotta love it

the wire off of the MSD box but I have two wires coming through the fire wall

Herb, did you build up the trans or did you put it
in stock? If you did build it up, what did you do to it? Did you do anything to
the converter, does it lock up? Everything that I have been seeing here and
other places is that people were having problems with snapping the input shafts
to the trans. Also without a computer in my '70 will it work properly. I know
that I'm asking a lot of questions, just trying to get as much info as possible
before I actually tear it down and I would be able to drive it until I finish
the work. :(

  Hey John,

I swapped a 700R4 into my 76 Vette about 6 or 7 years ago and I think it
was one of the best changes I made to that car - to this day that trans works
like a charm and with 3.70 rear gears Iget 21 mpg on the highway.

One thing to keep in mind, especially if your car has ashort
wheelbase(like a Vette) the Gearvendersadds length to the trans,
and from the pictures I've seen, the extra length looks like quite a
bit.

Also keep in mind that most 700R4's can't handle the same torque that a
TH400/GV unit can. I've got a '70 SS396 with a 700R4 that works GREAT!

I am also building a '70 vert with a ZZ502. For this project, we were
originally going to go with a 700R4, but found that the 700R4 tops out at
around 450 ft-lbs of torque. My understanding is that the weak link is the
Aluminum input shaft. We decided to switch gears (no pun intended) and
went with the TH400/GV setup.

However one final noteThere are companies that are addressing the 700R4
limitations. Bow Tie Overdrives in SoCal has a modified 700R4 that will
handle up to 600HP. I've already headed down the TH400/GV path, but it
might be worth looking into what you can get from a 700R4 these days.

I run my 70 down to Maryland quite often. It has a 4.10 12 bolt and cranks
out 3700 RPMs at 80 mph. I usually keep it there for the duration of the
trip down I-95 and 301 South. It gets awesome gas mileage at that (15
mpg).
Best bet is probably to go with a Gear Vendors Unit. Not cheap, but well
worth it as you get 6 forward gears instead of 4 with a 700R4.

revs are way to steep for long highway cruisin', 3000 @ 60 mph. Would like
to
drop them down to around 2000 @ 60 without swapping out rearend.

I run my 70 down to Maryland quite often. It has a 4.10 12 bolt and cranks
out 3700 RPMs at 80 mph. I usually keep it there for the duration of the
trip down I-95 and 301 South. It gets awesome gas mileage at that (15 mpg).
Best bet is probably to go with a Gear Vendors Unit. Not cheap, but well
worth it as you get 6 forward gears instead of 4 with a 700R4.

Thanks Clint, Tom also gave me his insight. By the
way have you got your new baby home yet? I've seen the pictures that Dale put on
the web for you, it looks like a sweet ride. Hope you have many hours of fun
behind the wheel and I'm sure that you will get many thumbs ups when you are out
in it.

Thanks,

Having owned a copo 69 Nova with L72/4spd
Hone overdrive unit and also a 68 El Camino with 468" 700R4, I can tell
you my first preference would be for the GearVenders set-up. Both worked very
well w/o any problems but one will require a change of transmissions. A GV
unit is more expensive but probably worth the extra bucks. Just my
  opinion,though.

Anyone have any opinions on Gearvenders
under/over drive verses a 700R4 tranny swap. I currently have a TH400
driving a 3.73 12 bolt posi and the revs are way to steep for long highway
cruisin', 3000 @ 60 mph. Would like to drop them down to around 2000 @ 60
without swapping out rearend.

Thanks in advance,

Re: [Chevelle-List] tune up

2002-11-15 Thread jlon5
I upgraded to the Petronix Ignitor, not the Ignitor II. The distributor must
be pulled to install the first Ignitor that I tried, to check for end play
in the distributor because of the use of a magnetic ring under the rotor. I
didn't leave it in because I couldn't get it to run with it in, thought it
was the Ignitors fault. Got new one in mail and let sit in box on shelf for
5 months. One day I received new Jegs catalog and saw that a different
Ignitor module is available that the distributor does not have to be pulled
to install, no need to re-time, etc. The new Ignitor has an LS designation
in the part number which stands for Lobe Sensor. No gap to check, simply
screw onto base plate, feed wires through distributor and connect to coil.
Have been using for almost a year with no problems, but sure to follow the
directions included very carefully including all checks as you go along.

I am going to tune up my new 64 Chevelle 283. A co-worker mentioned that I
should forget about points and put in an Ignitor II electronic ignition by
Pertronix. Anyone have any thoughts on this product?

Right off the bat, I thought that all SS cars had clear front parking lights
with amber bulbs and the regular Chevelles and Malibus had amber lenses with
clear bulbs like the ones that are on it.

Ken, I was just talking about that year in particular, '70. My '70 SS has
the clear lenses and all the Malibu's that I've seen have the amber lenses.
Sorry for the mix up, I wasn't referring to all year SS's.

John
I'm not sure about ALL Chevelles because my 69 Malibu still has the
original front lenses in the bumper opening and they are clear.

1. Amber Turn Signal Lenses
2. Small block fan shroud
3. Paint is a bit shiney for factory and being 32 years old at that
4. wrong upper radiator hose
5. Power Booster is painted black
6. No smog crap on it

I am sure I can find more. It's a nice car, but to be unmolested and a
survivor I think not
