[Chevelle-list] Muncie Rebuild

2009-03-24 Thread GCP Tech
After getting a lot of great responses from the manual to power steering box -
I'd like to get some opinions as to what I should do with my manual
transmission...

I'm looking at my options for giving my Muncie M-21 an overhaul. I can go
all-out and rebuild it with a new M-22 gearset, Super-Case Super-Tailhousing
or buy one assembled for under $1800 with all new parts. I only want to do
this once but I don't want to spend more money than I have to -- or be stuck
with more parts laying around the shop.

It will be going behind a pretty strong 283 until the 327 is put back together.
I may have to upgrade the transmission when the 327 is finished since all the
dyno reports suggest 500 hp.

The case and tailhousing appear to be in good shape, but I will be replacing
the aluminum mid-plate with an iron mid-plate. It looks like it could use a
new reverse gear or I could clean it up with a die grinder. It would be a good
idea to add new synchro rings and a new 2nd gear, so I could pay a little more
and get a whole new gearset.

The car has 4.56:1 rear gears so maybe upgrading to a close-ratio would be a
better choice over the wide ratio?

Is anyone running a Muncie 4-speed? If so, how much torque are you putting
into it? Does anyone have any concerns about how much torque the stock case
and tailhousing can handle? Think it could handle 500 hp?

Any feedback will be appreciated!
Thanks!

Dennis,
I agree with Trooper. My Muncie shifter was a pain to install, a pain to
shift, and a pain to yank out. Just buy a handle and use a good Hurst
Competition Plus shifter. The Muncie shifts like a wet noodle and is prone to
binding.especially if there is a hot chick in the nearby vicinity or a
crowd is watching you try to show off.

You can find plans on the web to make an adaptor for the Muncie Handle. It is
easyweld two pieces of steel into a T-shape and drill 4 bolt holes.

2006-06-11 Thread John
No not all are the same. Check the size of the pin that goes through the
cluster gear. It holds needle bearings in place in the cluster. Early
Muncies were 7/8th in. while later were a full 1 inch. You will have to
match that part to use your cluster gear etc. Also, be careful that there
is not excessive wear where the cluster shaft goes through the case at the
front. Often due to hard use many early cases were stretched there and
you don't want to deal with that. There is of course a way to fix it but it
is more trouble and expense. Hope this helps!

I need to pick up a 4 speed Muncie tranny for my
66 SS396 in the next couple of months. The boss of the guy doing my paint has
a rock crusher M22 available for $1400. Talking to my machine shop guy, he is
expecting my 396 to produce 400 to 425 horsepower when I put it
  together.

Based on my expected output, is an M22 a good
choice, or should I save the money and get myself an M20 or M21?

And Gene, when I order the harness from you, what
will be the expected lead time?

  Thanks,

My engine makes about 425 and I use an M21. Unless you
are pulling hole shots, the 21 is more than enough and you can pick them up for
$500. Granted, we'll all pull a hole shot once in a while. But for $500, you can
break three 21's before you get to a 22...

A TKO would be stronger, shift more smoothly, and be a lot quieter
than an M22 Muncie. The OD 5th would allow you to gear the car for the best
performance AND mileage. My 69 El Camino w/6spd is turning 2,000 rpm at
 70mph,with 4.11 cogs. In 4th gear,which has a 1:1 ratio just like the M22,
70mph would equate to 4,000 rpm.

Yes, that would be a true statement. I do like the
idea of a 5 speed overdrive tranny. My goal is to make the power tour next June,
and I'm sure my engine and wallet would appreciate it.

It was originally a 4 speed car, but I bought a
basket case, and I didn't get a tranny, bell housing, flywheel or clutch. I
did get a driveshaft, but I have no idea if it's for a manual tranny or an
automatic. I did get several sets of pedals... and the shifter hole
disappeared when the new floor went in.. Apparently this car has spent some
time as an automatic. I did get a manual floor shift column and gauge
cluster though...

My DD Performance Viper T56 cost me

A TKO would be stronger, shift more
smoothly, and be a lot quieter than an M22 Muncie. The OD 5th
would allow you to gear the car for the best performance AND mileage.
My 69 El Camino w/6spd is turning 2,000 rpm at 70mph,with 4.11 cogs.
  In 4th gear,which has a 1:1 ratio just like the M22, 70mph would
  equate to 4,000 rpm.

I need to pick up a 4 speed Muncie
tranny for my 66 SS396 in the next couple of months. The boss of
the guy doing my paint has a rock crusher M22 available for
$1400. Talking to my machine shop guy, he is expecting my 396 to
produce 400 to 425 horsepower when I put it
together.

Based on my expected output, is an
M22 a good choice, or should I save the money and get myself an
M20 or M21?

And Gene, when I order the harness
from you, what will be the expected lead time?

Thanks,
Larry

[Chevelle-list] Muncie 4-spd for sale

2003-08-15 Thread Dale McIntosh
Title: Muncie 4-spd for sale

Now that the 700R4 is in, I'm going to sell the Muncie and complete changeover for a 67 instead of using it in my Camino.

Muncie is a M20 wide ratio 65 unit (2.56/1.91/1.48/1.00), Hurst Comp Plus for a 67 w/console (according to Hurst catalog, the shifter assembly also fits 64-68 with and w/o console Chevelle as well as 64-67 Chevy II/Nova, 60-64 full size, 65-67 Skylark/Gran Sport, 64-66 Olds/442, 60-64 full size Pontiac, 64-66 Tempest/GTO, and (?) 59-64 Studebaker Hawk), bellhousing, fork, linkage, cover and disc, bearing, z-bar, etc. Everything was removed EXCEPT the ball stud in the block and naturally, the one on the frame.

Will meet any interested buyer in OKC or DFW area. Generally I'll meet you anywhere within 100-150 mile radius of Lawton, OK. Send me a deposit for expenses and time ($100 or so) and I'll meet you anywhere from the OKC area to the DFW area. I'll take half the expenses off the price if you're satisfied - come to Lawton to pick it up.

P is Muncie
0614 is June 14 (assuming a zero '0' and there's no space between
it and the '6').
This is a 64 to 66 transmission. 1967 saw the introduction of
the model year in the number - such as P8T13. P is Muncie, 8 is
for 1968, T is for December, and 13 is the 13th.

M20, M21 and M22 didn't get a letter designator until 1969
with 'A', 'B', and 'C' respectively.

Congrats on the find though!

2003-06-11 Thread Brad Waller
This site says it is an M21 from 63-65 with a 7/8 shaft. The later ones have 1 shafts, so this one may not be as strong?
http://www.camaros.org/trans.shtml

Other sites like this one:
http://peachstatechevelles.com/muncieid.html
say it is a 64-65 M20 or M21 unit.

I'd go with this as the authority:
http://www.5speeds.com/muncie2.htm
Casting: 3851325 Years: 1964 - 1965 Ratios: M20 2.56 1st , M21 2.20 1st

Decoding the P O 614 is (I think):
Muncie (P) June (06) 14th (14)

[Chevelle-List] Muncie shifter handle on a Hurst shifter

2003-01-16 Thread Stephen Lentz
Dale,
I was admiring the background on the scan with the wiper arm remover tool
and happened to look at your odd ball stuff page. You show a Hurst shifter
with a Muncie lever. Do you know if anyone makes this adaptor. I'm not
much of a welder and don't have the equipment anyway. I can't seem to get
my Muncie shifter to go in reverse unless I have a spare minute or three to
wiggle the handle (a lot) before getting it to go. I've also found that the
time takes much longer if there are women present or another vehicle waiting
for me to back up.
I think I'm going to buy a Hurst Comp Plus shifter (the 8014 model) and the
Hurst installation kit (the 7834 model) as well as new steel bushings and a
backup light switch (Yippee- no more ugly toggle switch on the transmission
hump!). Hopefully this combination using the Hurst shifter with the Muncie
handle will work with my stock console and bucket seats and still look
correct.
My car is a 70. Do you sell Hurst goodies or do you know anyone who can
beat Summit's price/service?

Thanks, Steve

I've found that www.sallee-chevrolet.com has great prices. If it's not
listed on their website, call them and they usually have it. Their website
says only 5% of what they carry is listed on the website. Their # is

I bought my Edelbrock Q-Jet and Carter fuel pump from them at a
significantly lower price than I could find anywhere else.

2003-01-16 Thread yenkochevelle
I have put the Muncie handle on a Hurst shifter by just cutting the bottom
of the handle where it has the 90 deg bend then drill two holes to bolt it
to the Hurst like stock Hurst handle. The Muncie shifters are getting hard
to find so it seems a shame to cut up a Muncie shifter. I have a Hurst and
want to put the Muncie back in. lol
The Hurst has a offset where the handle bolts on. It you have the right
Hurst shifter and the right plate between shifter and trans it should be no
problem.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Muncie shifter handle on a Hurst shifter

2003-01-16 Thread Dale McIntosh
Steve,

I don't sell Hurst but I've used their shifters for almost 40 years in
my Chevelles. The one in this particular car has been there for 15
years. One steel bushing kit, like you mentioned, and it's never given
me a lick of trouble. Summit is probably about as low ball priced as
anyone for Hurst equipment. Unless you know the previous owner or know
all of the parts (rods, arms, shifter assy) by their numbers, I'd be
leary of swap meet items.

I don't know of anyone who makes the adapter commercially, but any
welding or machine shop should be able to follow the specs on that page.
You could probably get a high school or votech student to make one up as
a class project. You'll note the specs for the shifter handle aren't
given so you'd have to measure your stock tower for the bolt spacing...I
imagine there are different measurements for different year towers.

Good luck,
Dale McIntosh

Make me an offer. I had a look inside tonight. I was pleasantly supprizzed.
It was extremely clean. It will need a bearing kit though. The front
bearings are rather rusty as it was undercover outside for many years. I
notice complete bearing kits are only about 75 bucks on ebay. After looking
inside I am bummin that it wasn't a M22 G. Ill hopefully get a few picks
this weekend and I can email them to you. If you are no longer interested
let me know and I may put it on ebay.

RE: [Chevelle-List] Muncie result

2002-08-01 Thread Craig A. Ellis

Yeah, but any Muncie 4 speed is pretty rugged. A friend of mine with a drag
car once pointed out to me that I do a hole shot about maybe once every
couple weeks at the most and I almost never slam shift the thing. He
correctly pointed out that I like to THINK I'm something of a hotrodder, but
the reality is I can't afford to pick up a four point ticket. And, frankly,
I've grown much much more careful in any area that even LOOKS like there
might be kids lurking somewhere. Therefore, in the rare cases where I do let
the thing out a bit, it's always an expressway or some other relatively
remote location. I suppose even an early model Muncie will endure my
lightweight use for YEARS without trouble.

2002-01-18 Thread Tigergutt

I have
delivered the trans to the welder, he said that the two ears were no problem (I
really hope that), he was more concerned about the crack in the bellhousing, it
will cost me about $ 40-60 in total.

Ditto
- one additional point - make sure who ever welds it,bolts the trans,
along with the broken ear, to a stock bellhousing to locate that 4th Bolt hole
correctly -

well u need to find a 9 digit code numbers and also look for the letters POC.
POC is the identification of a muncie i have a m21 it reads p.o.c.12 B the 12
is for the 21 type the b is the week 2nd week back to the nine digit code
that code stands for 1 should be your first # for chevrolet the 2nd digit is
the model year mine is 0 cause its a 1970 trans 3rd isfor the assembly plant
and the last 6 should match your last 6 of your vin# hope this helps in some

Hello everybody,

The good news ??

Ì have an aluminum gearbox from GM with a 7 bolt cover on the drivers side
#952648
On the passengers side it's is stamped: US patent 3088336 and #3925660
The tailhousing reads #3857584GM
It has got 10 spines on the input shaft and uses a TH-350 yoke (27 splines
???)

The bad news:
1.One burned die grinder :(

2. The two upper mounting ears on the transmission are broken, I have the
pieces.
Do some of you have any experience with welded mounting ears ?
Is it doable ?
will it hold or should I start looking for a new gearbox ?

Thanks !

André

RE: [Chevelle-List] Muncie help ?

I
really dont know why they are broken !

they
were ok when I put the trans in four years ago and there where no loose bolts or
anything.
Its
make me think that its becauseI loosened the lower bolts first, but the
breaks looked old.

Larry
or anyone else, can you tell which trans it is from the numbers i posted before
?? I mean M-20 orM-21 ??

Any
idea if I sould empty the case of the trans before having it welded ? I'm
thinking of a possible bearing damage becuse of the heat from the weld ?

Thanks

[Chevelle-List] Muncie shifter 1967 Chevelle

2001-06-29 Thread EconProf
I am having problems with my new shifter in a 1967 Chevelle SS 396
convertible. It seems to need adjustment but I have no clue on where to
start. I remember these shifters being a little loose back in th day but we
replaced with a hurst shifter. I need some help on this one.

2001-06-29 Thread 396guy

Looks like nobody else answered your question so I
thought I'd at least respond. I've had 5 67 SS's, all with 4-speeds.
Wise or not, the first thing I always did was toss them out in favor of a
Hurst. Muncie shifters were notorious for being "loose" if I remember
correctly. If you really want to keep the resto look, you can adapt the
Muncie tower to a Hurst shifter. Visit http://www.dalesplace.com/htm/stuff/muncie_to_hurst.htmfor
an article on just how to make the simple bracket that will allow this.
The *only* thing you lose is having to pull up the lever to get to
reverse.

Hope this helps a little,
