Re: [Chevelle-List] header install problems
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List The company that does the engines for Advance is a pretty good source, a guy that I know got an engine from them a few years back, it was just a six banger 3.1 for his Calvalier, he put it in and broke it in properly and one day it spun a bearing. He went back told them the problem, he pulled the motor and sent it back. Sure he was mad that he had to reinstall the engine (front wheel drive AHHH!) but within 2 days they gave him a new motor. He still runs it now, no problems coughs or anything, and it currently has about 150,000 miles on it (he drives alot for his job, the old motor had 350,000 on it when he blowed it at 70 mph on a freeway in Ohio). He says that if the body of the car is still in good shape after this one lets go he'll do it again, he is a satisfied customer. My buddy with the 66 Impala, his 350 is from Advance, I know this particular engine very well and after 22,000 miles so far (this boat gets driven everywhere), all that has been done are a few carb adjustments and replaced a leaky head gasket (that was Adams fault!!! He put the heads on not me so I don't want to hear it). This particular bit has sold me on wanting to go the box route. I thought you guys liked crate motors though so whats with all the fuss? I feel that it is better than some moron around here rebuilding my engine and I have a total engine failure in the next 15 miles, then the guy would say I was running it too hard and to his "inspection" he would find something that looks like it was run hard during break in (I trust nobody around here, I prefer to go with a reputable company than the morons I deal with on a daily bases) On further thought though, yes, they could possibly stick me with a p.o.s. engine and void my warranty, but I would take the same chances spending $2,000 for a local builder to build the motor and it turn loose on me way before its time and he not give me any sort of garantee that it will work. All he is there for is to slap the thing togather and maybe it will work, at least with the company I have a chance at least if it don't work I can take it back. There are reputable builders around here, but they like to take thier sweet time getting around to doing something, not to mention they won't turn a wrench for less than $1,500. The next engine in my car will not be a 350 as I have seen many done, it will be a big block and I prefer to keep it the way it came from the factory, I like my baby big block. Then on another thought, I may already have my other 396 built by the time the current one lets go, but I won't have a snowballs chance in Hell of getting any of my money back if something goes wrong with the home built engine, but then again it might just be the best motor in the world but I have no luck. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List as i was saying warranties are only as good as the people who sell them :). larry Kinda like in the movie Tommy Boy. "Then why do they put the guaruntee on the box? Because they know they are selling you a guarunteed piece shit. If you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guarantedd I will, I got spare time. But for your sake, for your daughters sake you might want to think about buying a quality product from me." I also agree with this from experience. We used to outsource some of our toner cartridge business to a comapny in Illinois. Everytime I sent back defectives, I included print sample and an explanation of the defect along with the weights of each cartridge to show how much was used, if any at all. They always found some bonehead excuse to not credit us back for their poor quality. Needless to say they we are not doing business with them anymore. Josh: warranties are only as good as the people who sell them. Read the small print. Murphy's law says if they can find a way to get out of paying for it they will. hell i can give you a warranty on anything you want. want it in writing? ok, now what was the problem? oh yea just send the product out here to Larry and I'll check it out. hey josh? hate to tell you this but that motor you sent back to me here in Oregon? well we can't find anything wrong with it. how do you want to pay to get your motor back? oh you don't think you should have to pay? well when you want your motor back send us the money. as i was saying warranties are only as good as the people who sell them :). larry
Re: [Chevelle-List] header install problems
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List It is a rebuild. I just call it a crate motor, sorry if I caused confusion if you thought that they were turning out brand new engines. But basically it is, everything from the crank up is brand new, and if it screws up within the warranty then you don't have to worry (I know my dumb luck it would die the day after the warranty expired) the only thing you have to do is put the replacement in, and whats that a days figiting? Anyhoo sorry about the confusion. Re: [Chevelle-List] header install problems
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Don't really know where they come from, everybody is saying Mexico, all I know is I am sold on crate engines; 1 year warranty no questions asked, put on your manifold (sometimes heads) starter, distributer, and alternator and you're done, reliable, no screaming at you machinist for his 'rebuilt' motor blowing on the initial start up. I just like to try to keep things as simple as possible, I'm still going to try to build that 396 that I got given to me (OK so I worked for it) but I like crate engines for thier warranty and such so if it screws up, they will replace it (no racing I know, I don't do that anymore anyhow). I have thought maybe going Pro-Touring with my Chevelle, well not exactly cuz that would interupt my "look" but more or less just make it to where I can drive it affordably anywhere I want (change out those 3.90s maybe get a whole new rear with a peg leg with high gears, so when I go somewhere I change out the rear and forget about it) But I'll shut up, got off my original response, so to conclude I have no idea where they come from. Re: [Chevelle-List] header install problems
this is why i didn't do the crate 502. my engine builder warned me that they had problems (of course he wanted to build me an engine too) with oil consumption and poor machine work. he told me if i bought one to bring it in and for about $1800.00 he would fix everything. since we have started (Oct) on my motor (458) 2,502 crates have been brought into his shop both with excessive oil usage but I have also seen several that run great with no problems. The GM target motors have been put together for years in Mexico. I wonder where the cranks were built that tom mentioned? Larry

Re: [Chevelle-List] header install problems
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List Hee hee. I've got a better story than that.. This happened at the Advance Auto Parts here before they got new managment and got guy in there that knew what they were talking about. I blowed the tailshaft on my transmission and I was going to see if I couldn't buy a new tranny and forget about it, I was willing to go with a Borg Warner, as long as it would fit, so here is my story. I had my friends along with me this day, they had to give me a lift anyway :) Me: I need a Muncie 4 speed or a Borg Warner for a 66 Chevelle; just about any GM 4 speed will work, as long as it is for a 69 block. Dork (asst. manager at that looked like a rat): Ok lets see here.. I don't see it on the computer let me check the book. Is it a Turbo 350? Me: No, I have a Muncie M22 4 speed, thats an automatic. Dork: Ok how about a TH 350? Me: No, thats also an automatic, I have a Muncie. Dork: A Turbo 400? Me (patiently, but beginning to loose my cool): No, another automatic, I need a 4 speed. Dork: A TH400? Me: No, automatic. Dork: AHA! A Powerglide, thats it isn't it? Me (thats it, this moron messed with the wrong guy on the wrong day): NO, NO, NO, I want a 4 speed.. You know a stick, a manual, a gear grinder whatever the Hell you call it you Jackass! In a Manual (I stressed manual) car you have instead of 2 pedels you have three, and its not an emergency brake!!! When you have one of these you have to push in the far left big pedel to cahnge your gears, in my case I go 1,2,3,4 to go forward and all the way over to the left and up to get to reverse!! I DO NOT HAVE A GD AUTOMATIC!! All the transmissions you have just named are AUTOMATICS, prabably like whatever POS you drive, do you now understand what I am talking about? Moron: Oh, we don't carry those, we can get one for a Mustang though. Me: FU (then I stormed out with my giggling best buds right behind) That right there made me not step a foot back in the place until one of my friends got a job there and I knew he knew what he was talking about, not to mention he would give me his employee discount on the more expensive stuff. Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List i hope it wasn't pep boys. those people are about the dumbest around. at the stores around here, they don't know how to look up something as simple as a fuel pump or a gasket. i went and asked for a big block oil pan gasket and the kid didn't know what a big block was. he thought it was a 305. i just had to shake my head and said that isn't a big block is it. Re: [Chevelle-List] header install problems
I just installed a set of Hedmans, but they were a different part number - 68600. They fit very nicely, I don't have any clearance problems. Since they are a shorty-style header, ground clearance is improved as well. Summit sells them (they aren't shown in the catalog, you have to call and ask for them). Galen - Original Message - From: Daniel To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2001 12:13 AM Subject: [Chevelle-List] header install problems I'm havin problems installing my new hedman headers (#68290). The driver's side header hits the mount for the lower control arm. So bad that it would have to move over about a half inch just to install them. My question is (before I try to take em back) could it be because I have the wrong motor mounts? The PO replaced a 307 with the 350 and I've heard that the motor mounts are different, maybe he didn't change them. What do you guys think? Could I put the correct mounts on to fix this problem? The motor needs to go down a bit. Or I'm open to other ideas. Oh, also if there isn't a solution, what headers do you guys recommend? RE: [Chevelle-List] header install problems
Replies to this message are sent to The Chevelle Mailing List If you already have the exhaust stuff off to put headers in, changing the motor mount is a pretty simple job, and they are cheap too. There are two different heights that I've seen myself. I think the brand name at the parts store was Anchor, but there are two different mounts, one is part # 2283, and the other is #2412 (i think). The latter is a "shorter" mount, at least compared to the 2283. See if your parts guy has these and you can visually compare them. If you're going to change one mount, you should probably change both. But, it's a relatively easy job with the exhaust off.. -Dave -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Daniel Sent: Thursday, July 12, 2001 1:14 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Chevelle-List] header install problems I'm havin problems installing my new hedman headers (#68290).
