Dan,
There is a plate on the top, simply held on by screws. The same console is

used for auto and man and the only thing that is different is the top plate.

You could remove this plate from the console and possibly fab a new one that

would fit your shifter. I've never seen anyone do this but that doesn't mean

it can't be done.

I haven't looked at the '67 consoles, but have looked at
the new '68-'72 repros at several swap meets.  They were awful looking, to
the degree that I would've hated looking at them every time I got in the
car  (maybe it's just me).  Cheap appearance, silver highlighting was
sloppy.  I ended up spending much more for a restored original on
eBay.

it will work with the longer frame. you just need to cut approx. 4 inches off of it

Re: [Chevelle-List] Console Assembly Question

Steve,
Your frame is 112" it will interchange with any 68-72 two door coupe
also the entire BOP line of A-bodies (Cutlass,GTO,GSX etc.) It will not
interchange with the 4 door, Elky, or Wagon. These frames are 116"
It also will not interchange with Monte Carlo. The front wheels on the
Monte were extended forward 4" thus a 116" frame. Here is a great site
to answer questions like yours.

You'll need a 2-dr frame, the 4-door/wagon/elky have a longer wheelbase.

Wow, thanks everybody. I didn't realize silicone was bad...I do have
some
seam sealer left from my GTO floor project. I will use that. Does
anyone
know what frames will fit my 70 chevelle SS. Mine is pretty rotten from
the
time it spent back east driving to school in the snow. The guy who put
new
heads on my car told me that the frame needs to be switched out with a
rust-free one soon or I am going to be in big troubleI guess I wont
be
"hot dogging" any time soon. Do four-door frames work, or are the wheel
bases different? I figure a 68-72 chevelle or possibly 1st generation
Monte
Carlo frames might be similar. Any suggestionsI live in the Phoenix
Metro area now.

Ditto ! Do not use silicone. The seam sealer would be best.

Steve,
I will agree with Bill on this. I've seen a product that is generically
referred to as "seam sealer" that would be a logical choice, its probably
the same stuff Bill is referring to.

I would use a different sealer to seal the seam. Silicone sealer and
steel don't get along. You will create rust where you use the silicone
sealer. Use a product like 3M 8505 - Fast & Firm. It fills well,
waterproofs and sets up to a consistency like factory seam sealer. It's
made for exactly what you are doing.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Console Shifter Mounting

2002-09-28 Thread Gary Treible

Well It's done. It works, the shifts seem to be coordinated with the detents,
*and* the neutral safety switch and
backup lights work. Hoo...Rah! Just a few comments though (I used a ShiftWorks
conversion kit on the transmission, a
real GM cable, and an Old Old Stock shifter.:

1. The clips provided to secure the cable in the shifter and the transmission bracket
are a joke. They were hard to put
on, but didn't seem to retain the cable if I pushed on it. Maybe I didn't use them
correctly, but I followed the
directions 'best I could. I solved this by 'closing' the openings with a visegrip so
the cable can't come out.

2. When drilling the hole for the cable, it wants to come out at a really shallow
angle. Drill the hole appropiately.

3. I have no clue how I'll drill pilot holes for the rubber boot that seals the cable
hole. Remove the drive shaft? Ha!
Can you say RTV?

4. The cable connects to the shift lever on the transmission with a stud. That stud
is shown as bolting on with just a
flat washer and a nut. I think it should have a lock washer at least. A lock nut
would be better.

5. On the side of a TH350 there are two tapped holes in the case that match the cable
bracket perfectly. Don't use
them... follow the directions... it will save you at least an hour :-) The cable
bracket mounts using the pan bolts.
Mine did not leak when I removed two in a row, but I worried about it.

6. The neutral safety switch connector is fed from two thick purple wires. It's on
the very top of the steering column
(hard to see). You will bust your knuckles when the connector comes apart, but
hey no pain...(you get the idea).

7. I did all this work with the front end up on ramps. Although I had the emergency
brake set, rear wheel chocks, and
jack stands under the car, I was uncomfortable with the idea that as I wrenched on the
shifter it would come out of park
and the car could roll. To solve this I used a Chevy Suburban parked just behind and
touching the Chevelle. Although
the transmission was shifted through all the gears (many times) during the
installation, the car never moved.

Tomorrow it will be time to make the console lights work. I still haven't located
that connector, but I got all day.

Gary

RE: [Chevelle-List] Console Shifter Mounting

2002-09-28 Thread Spencer, Darrell

I went through this when I converted my '70 to factory floor shift. It's
actually pretty intuitive where the placement goes. The shifter frame fits
with the contours of the trans tunnel pretty well. Shuffle it around until
it 'seats' itself. Keeping that in mind, align the shifter's cutout for the
cable to the stamping in the tunnel and that's pretty much it. Just for
giggles, you might want to lay the console over it, complete with the
shifter cover portion just to confirm everything lines up.

I remember being apprehensive before taking this plunge myself.

I'm getting ready to put an AT console shifter in my 1970 Chevelle. I'm a
bit aprehensive about getting it properly located. Does anyone have the
hole locations from a factory car? I can see the dimple where the cable
goes through the floor, but that's all I've got.

Re: [Chevelle-List] Console Shifter Mounting

2002-09-28 Thread Gary Treible

Dwight,

Thanks, but I have the assembly manual for 1970. As you say it doesn't have quite the
level of detail I'd like. I get
the impression that since the shifter is cable operated, it really doesn't matter
where it's located exactly, and the
guys at the factory had some latitude in placing the whole console assembly. I hate
things like that :-)

Thanks

Gary

Gary I have a Factory assembly manual for 72's & while it doesn't show exact hole
locations it may be helpful to you. I
can make copies and fax them to you if you have access to a fax machine.

[Chevelle-List] Console Question

2002-03-06 Thread Lojac

When I bought my 69 Chevelle it
had a Saginaw Tranny...which I soon ripped to shreds.  The previous owner
of the car gave me a console new in the box, but it would not fit since the
saginaw shifter was on an angle.  If I was to put a Muncie (M-21) in my
car, could I put the console in the car?  Will the shifter be in the right
location?

Jerry,
Check with you local auto paint store, they should
carry SEM Vinyl and Plastic interior dyes, for the
finish, most are satin, but they should be able to
point you in the right direction, as far as finish!
