That is what I came up
against with my Moser. IMO it should had been powder coated for the money, or at
least an option (maybe it was, but it wasn't an option give to me and I failed
to think about it until I opened the crate). I asked around and found that the
heat would be to much onthe internals.

One thing to note... if you go the powder coat way you have to give
them a bare housing... the bushings and insides will never take the heat.
If it's already together... paint is the only way. I have to do the same
to my rear... i plan to primer it and then paint it a gloss black can get
the paint from a local store... or eastwood.

I like the idea about using the cherry picker I was going to paint it
on stands... always end up scratching off some new paint...

Good luck!!

According to the body shop owner where my car is in paint shop jail you can
top coat it with epoxy primer. I would recommend that you sand it some first
to rough it up. They recommend their tie-coat-primer but I have noticed some
blistering when it is used before acrylic enamel but it may not have been
primed first with primer sealer before the top coat was applied, (another paint
shop jail story). The instructions on the can say to let it dry before top
coating it in order to let it cure, if I remember correctly. I topcoated it
with primer before it cured and the POR15 blistered thru the primer, (then I
read the instructions). Call them and ask about epoxy primer, I think that's
your best bet.

I agree, the epoxy primer is a good product. However,
what I am reading is that some folks want a gloss or
painted surface. I have had good sucess with a paint
gun and quality automotive enamel. I did a motor and
it lasted very good. The point of this is that using a
20$ binks replica siphon cup gun and some quality
enamel will produce lasting durable finish that can
hold up to the dirt, salts and moisture.

It never rains here in Texas. Well, unless there is a
Huricane in the area, so I don't have to worry bout
such things.

I'M NOT SURE THAT por15 WOULD BE THE BEST answer for new clean metal. As I recall it adhears best to a slightly rusted surface. There may be a prep available to age the metal though. Also read carefully the prep instructions health warnings at
www.por15.com . Its good stuff but can be dangerous. I used it also am happy with the result.

I did as well. I used a wire wheel to get the crust and rust off the housing, then Simple Green to get rid of any left over grease and gunk. Blew off with compressed air and painted the housing with the POR-15. Looks awesome.

You can top coat it. There is a specific procedure to follow. For specifics on the proceduresee the POR web site www.por15.com . But as I recall, you coat it, let it cure for a while, then before it cures hard ( still slightly tacky) apply the top coat.

Hi,
You can take a gloss acrylic enamel
and add a flattening agent to dull the finish. It is a bit trail and error but
can be made what ever you want, plus add a hardener for durability and faster
drying. As for primer you can go DuPont Vari-Prime over bare metal followed by
an epoxy and finally the enamel top coat. Or an Imron type of poly urethane if
you want to spend big bucks.

it in the middle with an engine houst and mask

I used a Catalyzed Epoxy Primer from Auto paint
supply store. In my case, I want the semi-gloss look
that was produced by the factory when they used to use
lacquer paint or primer under the car but it was
poorly done and often did little to stop rust. This
enamel product uses a hardener and makes a nice
finish.
