Yes,

They are 4 inches longer than the standard Chevelle frame. El Camino frames are also stronger since they are boxed.

They are the same. In fact, you could use a frame from any GM A-Body coupe
(Chevelle, Monte Carlo, Cutlass, GTO, Skylark) from 1968-72.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Frame question

I found a rust-free, straight, Arizona frame for a 70 Cutlass 2-door HT for
$250.00. The frame is already stripped except for the front sway bar and
the fuel/brake lines. I just wanted to make sure that everything is the
same as a Chevelle frame so I can put it under my 70SS without any
surprises. Can anybody give me a quick note letting me know if the frames
are the same. Do they have the same part number so I can verify?

Thanks for your help,
Steve

According to
the GM Parts Accessories book, there are a total of 4 frames for 64-67
Chevelles with these notes:

3878327
64-66 Chevelle (exc Sta
Wag., El Camino)
(Note 1,2)

3876907
64-66 El Camino, Sta. Wag. (Note 1)

389
67 Chevelle (Conv.) (Note 1)

3893335
67 Sta. Wag, El Camino
(Note 1)

Note 1: When
using these frames on Spt. Cpe.,
Sta. Wag., and 1964-1966 Sedans transmission support 3931446 must be used.

Note 2: When
using on 4 Door Sport Sedan models it will be necessary to rework the inner
portion of the Side Members to provide clearance with the longitudinal Reinforcement,
welded to the underbody.

I dont
see it mentioned anywhere that 4 must be removed from any frame to fit Spt. Cpe. or
Convertibles.

In 1967, ALL
Chevelles, be they Malibu, 300, Wagon or Elky all have a 115
wheelbase and exactly the same tread widths (front and rear), same overall
width, and same front and rear fender overall width. Where are the 4 cut from?

If someone has
first-hand knowledge or know of a reputable website
that shows Elky or station wagon frames from 64-67 have to be shortened to fit
the Sport Coupe/Convertible, please direct me to it. Im not doubting
anyones word as Ive never had to swap frames but Id like
to see it in print for reference.

Dale. In the Chevrolet/Chevelle chassis Service
manual
section 02, page 2, fig 2, is a Chevelle frame
dimension drawing.
It use the funtion of a datum plane for
vertial dimensions and body mount and locating pin holes for horizontal
demensions.
From the center line of the radiator
mounting hole to a locating hole on the side of the frame at about the
upper A arm gussets is 32.12 in ALL
And all other dimension are the same, ALL models
EXCEPT
STATION WAGON PICK-UP ( El -Camino).
This one and only variation deals with thedimensionlength to the
rear body mount.
Thewheel base/lower control arm bolt location
ect are the same.
A body sedan,coupe convertible 145.35 + 32.12
= 177.47 in.
A body station wagon el-camino 148.62 +
32.12 = 180.74 in.
Thus the station wagone el-camino have
and extra frame length
from the last rear side bodymount to the end
back body mount of
3.27in or 3 9/32of an inch.

There are companies making frames for older Corvettes and another company
making frames for 55-57 chevys and there are shurely other companies making
frames. Check out modern hot rodders such as Curries...mayby you only need
a back half. Have you tries a Google search and checked out your latest
chevy magazine?

New corvette frames are about 3500 dollars or so; used are about half of
that. I'd keep an eye out for what someone else pointed out...a west or mid
west frame. You may have to wait a few months, but you should be able to find
one.

Hope this helps.

Whether the frame is boxed or C-channel has nothing at all to do with how it
will fit. The person who said that is just blowing smoke.

The boxed frame is used on the El Camino because it does not have the same
amount of support from the roof as a coupe or sedan. Convertibles also got
boxed frames for the same reason.

Keep in mind that a boxed frame is much heavier.

John is correct - that's why 'verts have always been called wiggle
wagons in Detroit. The most notorious was when the F body 'vert was
built by American Sunroof (ASC). They took production hardtops and cut
the roof off and installed a ragtop without doing any stiffening work. I
think ASC did this to BMW's, too, but they did quite a lot more
structural work.

I looked at a Mustang convertible once that had so much floorboard rot that
the passenger side door was pinched shut and would no longer open. My guess
is that if it was opened, the car would have folded in half. That's why the
support from underneath is so much more important on convertibles.

Elky frames are 4 longer and you have to cut and weld them to make them
fit.

Mustangs are unibody cars, so they tend to fold easier with rot.

I looked at a Mustang convertible once that had so much floorboard rot
that
the passenger side door was pinched shut and would no longer open. My
guess
is that if it was opened, the car would have folded in half. That's why
the
support from underneath is so much more important on convertibles.

Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that convertibles need more support
from below than coupes sedans. A full-frame convertible with a rotted
frame could suffer the same fate.

I wasn't implying that they didn't need as more support from below. But a
full-frame convertible with a rotted floor isn't going to suffer as bad as a
uni-body with a rotted floor.Apples to Oranges.

Hey John

Just as a FYI for the early cars you have to cut about 2inches off of the
elky frame to make it fit a malibu. We have a elky frame under my uncle's
64 conv. Other than sectioning the rear frame rails it was a dead on
match, bolt hole to bolt hole.

When we pulled the body off my dad's '63 Vette years ago, the frame was so
rotted it immediately collapsed under its own weight. The body structure
was holding it together.

Steve:
the el camino frame will work but you have to shorten it approximately 4 inches (almost 4 its actually 3 something) at the rear. A convertible frame will also work but with no mods like the el camino. you would have to use the cross member out of an el camino or convertible though.

No one makes frames for the cars, well yet anyways. I seriously doubt you will find a rust free frame. That is just about unheard of. Best bet is to keep an eye on the west coast or midwestern cars, but I bet even they have surface rust on the frames.
