Krylon makes a paint specifically made for painting plastic. Works great on
plastic lawn furniture. Should work on a plastic battery.

On my 66 SS I did the firewall body color, after I smoothed it a little.
Powdercoated the inner fenderwells gloss black along with the rad
support. I too used bedliner on the floorpans/trunkpans both underneat
and inside, it rally worked great. While I am on it, there was a post
about powder coating frames. Both the Chevelle and Corvette were frame
off and I powdercoated everything metal that I could. I drive both and
have not had any issues with it releasing. If I scratch the frame on a
jack or lift it is easy to just touch it up with a rattlecan. I am a fan
or powdercoating it has worked very well for me.. as someone else on the

2006-11-28 Thread Larry Shouse
When I had my 66 painted, The paint guy suggested I have him paint both the
inner fenders and the firewall body color. I was thinking more old school,
with correct shades of black on both the firewall and inner fenders. He and
I discussed this once a week whenever I would go look at his progress on the
rest of the body... I finally compromised. I had him paint the firewall body
color, and the inner fenders in semi gloss black. I have no regrets at all.
I'm extremely happy with the way things look under the hood. I figured it
would be much easier to take out the inner fenders and spray them body color
if I decided I didn't like the current look

Take a look at some cars at local meets and shows, look at pictures on-line
and in the magazines. Ultimately, it's your call. Good luck.

not need a top coat can not be sprayed. Use foam brushes and throw away. I have

see the end result but want protection go with POR 15.

http://eastwood.resultspage.com/search?p=KKsrid=S7%2d4lbc=eastwoodts=custompw=corrolessuid=739702418isort=scorew=corolessrk=1

According to Eastwood:

Encapsulates
rust primes in one step

Prevents
rust creep

Minimal
prep - remove loose rust, degrease, apply

Can be
used under or over body fillers

Compatible
with most top coats

Available
in Red, Black, Silver, Clear

Eastwood Rust
Encapsulator has been shown by an independent lab to be the most effective rust

Encapsulator has proven to be superior in sunlight resistance, preventing rust
creep, and overall durability.Heat resistant up to 400 F. Made in the

With that said, back

chassis black. I bought it for a vette that I was going to put back together,
but now I think I'll use it on my '67 pickup. Can anyone confirm that the
Corrolless product is the same or similar to the POR product?

Anyway I would think that any decent
rattle-can enamel paint, Rustoleum or similar should offer decent protection
for the frame.

Eastwood is famous for taking other companies' paints and
putting their label on them. Not that there's anything wrong with it as long as
they provide a source for good quality products. Just remember that you can often
get the same paint elsewhere for less $$ if you know where to look.

Just a note, don't use POR-15 anywhere the sun

it degrades in the sun. Also, I know a few people who have sprayed POR-15 with

I went
to Eastwood's web site and searched for Corroless, but it appears they either no
longer sell it or changed the name to "Rust Encapsulator."
http://eastwood.resultspage.com/search?p=KKsrid=S7%2d4lbc=eastwoodts=custompw=corrolessuid=739702418isort=scorew=corolessrk=1

According to Eastwood:

Encapsulates rust primes in one step
  Prevents rust creep
Minimal prep - remove loose rust, degrease, apply
Can be used under or over body fillers
  Compatible with most top coats
Available in Red, Black, Silver, ClearEastwood
Rust Encapsulator has been shown by an independent lab to be the most effective
rust preventive product yet. Tested against well-known brands, the New Eastwood
Rust Encapsulator has proven to be superior in sunlight resistance, preventing
rust creep, and overall durability.Heat resistant up to 400 F. Made in
the USA.

With
that said, back whenthe El was disassembled, I had the frame sandblasted, then
I coated it with the Eastwood Corroless followed by Chassis Black. It's
been over 5 years and 16,000 miles and the frame still looks good and is rust
free.

Anyway I would think that any decent rattle-can enamel paint, Rustoleum

POR15 can be sprayed just fine. I've done it many
times. You do need good ventilation and good respiratory equipment because it
does contain cyanoacrylates. They also advise you use their thinner which I
do.
I've also used Eastwoods Rust Encapsolator
(successor to Corroless)and don't feel it's near as durable and if you buy
it in the spray can and don't use it all at once it has a tendency to clog the
nozzle.

I would not use adhesive remover, but either bug

Re: [Chevelle-list] painting plastic parts

2003-10-20 Thread Zieg72

Plastic painting is a challenge sometimes. The
plastic composition is key to good adhesion. What exactly are you trying
to paint? What kind of car is it? I have several options that may
work.

I have had some problems with
repainting interior plastic moulding. Last time I did it I used SEM
$8.00 a can paint but it still pealed off so I must not be using the correct
prep before spraying it. Any suggestions will be appreciated.Bob

Re: [Chevelle-list] PAINTING THE 69

2003-10-03 Thread DonnieG67
Joe,

If you want a concourse quality job, then it would be best to go to someone who
specializes in this type of work for a living and understands what you want. You will
pay big bucks, but get a top notch job. Your average body and paint shop will not
want to put the time in to give you this kind of work. Not that I am knocking the
average shops, but they can make a lot more quick money doing smaller insurance
type jobs. You will get a cheaper price, but dont expect top notch work. Just my
opinion.

Donnie

2003-10-03 Thread MICRLASER
Joe,

Find yourself a restoration sho or at least someone that is willing to do an
older car. I have been through the same thing myself already and I know how
hard it is to find someone to do the work up to your expectations. I went
through a nightmare with my 70 in the paint shop. I was told 6 weeks, it ended up
being 6 months. Same thing with my 69. The best thing to do is to go to a
show and find the best paint job on a car there and ask where they got it
painted and go from there.

Tom

2003-10-02 Thread ROTTYJOE
FINALLY
I need some advice, I am ready to paint the car, and I have been visiting paint shops in my area. Some I feel confident with, do I need to ask certain questions, I tell them all I am restoring a concourse car, and I am hoping they understand that and expect a #1 paint job.
The color of my 69 is Lemans Blue # 71 but I cannot find out what the color below the molding is, it was a silver color. Does anyone know the code to that color?
Thanks Joe

   I purchased a used
set of headers for my 69 SS. They were unused but are a little marked
up. I think I'm going to sand blast them. What should I paint them
with. Can't afford powdercoating and there is no one close that even
does it. I plan on going to Carlisle PA Saturday and would like to pick
something up to paint them with. Any ideas.

POR-15 has http://www.por15.com/hightempcoatings.html while Eastwood has
SILVER HIGH TEMP COATING 1 PINT $ 19.99 Item-no 10175 Z

I'm sure there are others too.

POR-15 makes a really nice exhaust manifold kit if you can live with the drab gray color.
